I’m very glad he won it. If it was Crosby or Ovechkin I would have puked because Henrik Sedin was a beast all year long.

Blair Betts got one First Place vote and two Second Place votes for Selke.

I think Selke is one of the toughest awards to vote on. Ovechkin and Crosby getting plenty of votes is complete BS, and Semin not getting any votes is too. So tough to judge how good of a defensive player a given guy is.

Yeah, I understand. I’m just completely astounded that the only people who voted for him put him 1st or 2nd. Also, he certainly deserves votes, but 1st and 2nd place votes? Those three guys deserve some credit for picking a defensive specialist, but they also deserve some criticism for putting him first and second.
In all, it’s just strange.

Duchene finished third to Myers and Howard in Calder voting, but he’’ll win the Hart one day. Neither of them will.

Tavares and Hedman still have more potential than the rest of that draft class.

Well Duchene was the only player taken in the 2009 draft of the Calder candidates, so you are saying that Tavares and Hedman have more potential than just him, or all three?
I still think Myers (2008 #12) has tons of potential, he hasn’t even come close to growing in to that lanky frame of his. Clearly he has offensive gifts, now imagine him growing in to some snarl. That kid could be an absolute beast, and the best of any of those 5.
Quick compare to of Myers to Hedman (when i say highest on team below, I mean for Dmen only):
Myers: 48pts and a +13; QualComp: 0.074 highest on team; QualTeam 0.182 highest on team (so head played with the best on his team against the best of the other team); His Ozone start is 50.1% and Ozone finish is 52.6%.
Hedman: 20pts and a -3; QualComp: 0.025 middle of his dmen, QualTeam 0.047highest on team (he played against average competition while playing with his teams best players); His Ozone start is 49.8% and his Ozone finish is 45.4%.
I realize this doesn’t measure potential, but Myers played first pairing minutes for a playoff team and produced. Myers is only about 10 months older than Hedman, and has more of his body to grow in to. Just thought I’d throw this out there.
Side note, Tavares did play tougher comp with inferior linemates than Duchene.
Some scouts had Duchene higher than Tavares because Tavares’ skating isn’t great while Duchene can flat out fly.

It’s hard to project anyone forward, or make a statement like Tavares and Hedman have more potential than the rest of that draft class. I just wanted to give Myers his props b/c 1. he wasn’t in their draft class, and 2. the kid had a sick year for not being close to physically matured. I personally think he’ll be better than Hedman, but that’s just a guess using this years performances as a gauge. Duchene and Tavares, who knows. Duchene had the better year, Tavares played the tougher minutes.
Yeah I probably should have qualified and clarified my statement more. TST said Duchene will win the Hart some day, but I personally believe just from the reading/watching I did last season before the draft that both Tavares and Hedman have a ceiling of being something special and are hence more likely to win the Hart over the likes of Ovechkin. Hedman was definitely disappointing this season but he’s got the talent, size and grit to be a superstar.
Myers is a stud, I’m not gonna argue with that. Duchene is very good too but just in my personal opinion, Tavares has a higher ceiling and more Hart trophy potential.
Somewhat related question: what do people think Giroux’s ceiling really is?
