What the hell is going on? Hamhuis news takes on every possible angle

Let's just look at a few Tweets from a few different people today, shall we? These are in chronological order.

Pierre McGuire says he's hearing Dan Hamhuis is closing in on a deal with the Flyers in the $5 mill/yr range.around 10:30 AM ET, Jun 25 via HootSuite

No truth to this. RT @CanucksEdge Pierre McGuire says he's hearing Hamhuis is closing in on a deal with the Flyers in the $5 mil/yr range.about 1:45 PM ET, Jun 25 via web

Considering the Flyers 1st offer was a little more than $3 mil, it doesn't just skyrocket to $5 mil in 5 days. I'm told around $4 is right.about 1:45 PM ET, Jun 25 via web

I think it's likely to sign Hamhuis around $4 & still have enough ($3m) for Coburn and a goalie. I dont see any way Flyers dont sign Hammer.about 1:45 PM ET, Jun 25 via web

Dan Hamhuis is not at all close on contract talks with PHI and at this point, all signs point to him going to UFA.about 2:20 PM ET, Jun 25 via UberTwitter

What the hell is going on here? This story isn't done, and now other people are saying the Flyers are looking to trade Hamhuis' rights to Vancouver. Meanwhile, Seravalli has a source saying the Flyers aren't looking to move Hamhuis' rights. This is a mess.

Honestly, if you want a baseless opinion from me on this, the Vancouver media and their fans have been all over Hamhuis because he's a local boy. That should be taken into consideration -- they want this guy, and they have reasons to start rumors because of that fact. Again, that's just an uninformed opinion from me, but it's something I've noticed ever since the Flyers traded for the guy last weekend.

Also just saw one saying “Starting to hear whispers the Flyers may trade his neg rights to Canucks. Checking.”

…and Seravalli responds to Dreger by saying they’re not considering trading his rights, and want him signed.

Can we get Willie Mitchell in return, or maybe Alex Edler?

How about Cory Schneider…?

The rights to Hamhuis and Boucher to Vancouver for Willie Mitchell and Corey Schneider.

by mikefive on Jun 25, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but then we’re into the same mess with having to sign Willie Mitchell. Plus I’d be concerned with his post-concussion situation.

by Ben Feldman on Jun 25, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Or we let him walk. Basically, it would be Parent for Schneider, with the bonus of jettisoning Boosh’s contract and clearing up our goaltending mess.

by Snevik on Jun 25, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true. Plus the Flyers would get that seventh round pick for 2011 since someone else would be signing Hamhuis.

The Boldest Prediction!

I predict that Dan Hamhuis will be playing NHL hockey somewhere next season.

Watch him bolt for the KHL after you said that lol.

But you’re right he’ll be playing somewhere. I don’t know what to make of all of this… if it’s more than 4M I say deal his rights.

The big difference of course is that Clarkie could fix his mistakes by simply spending as much money as he needed to. Homer doesn’t have that same luxury with the cap.

Maybe bad scoop is the Canadian version of rotten egg, referring to Hamhuis and his unwillingness to sign for his true value.

As in, “oh that rumor of Hamhuis wanting $5mil, that guy is just a bad scoop, he doesn’t want to play out East and won’t recognize his true value”

Dumb joke I know, but meh, it’s a slow Friday at the office.

by chrislanci on Jun 25, 2010 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

We're in Twitter purgatory

I just posted the above subject line in the other thread, and now we have multiple Twitter shots on the home page to help prove my point. Think about how “Tweets” occur…in fact the information from later Tweets could be older in terms of research, contacts, data.

This is all driven by 140 characters and instant media. All not relevant potentially. But these reporters are all in competition with each other to thrill, uh, us.

And now, as I am posting this, Travis posts “bad scoop”. Uh-huh.

A few days ago I proposed that Homer was putting us in a disinformation/fog of war game. Welcome to it. (So, conspiracy theorist alert, maybe this is all driven by Homer? :-))

I was in college in Boston in 1974 and when Clarke scored the OT goal in game 2 I knew that the Flyers would win the Cup since they would never lose at home.

by Bud in TN on Jun 25, 2010 2:44 PM EDT reply actions

Well … anything Pierre McGuire says should be stricken from the record anyway … I mean the guy should just keep his mouth shut … and at the same time stop breathing >.>

by ic0n67 on Jun 25, 2010 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not concerned that the Flyers will pay him $5mil, because even they know that’s a huge overpayment. My concern is that they will bargain him down to $4mil+change, and sign him then, because that’s still an overpayment

by Snevik on Jun 25, 2010 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

And doesn’t it seem pretty clear at this point the guy doesn’t want to play here? Or is just in it for the money?

by Ben Feldman on Jun 25, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, NOTHING seems clear at this point.

I would think that, if he didn’t want to play here, Homer would try to send him somewhere he’d want to sign. I’m sure he’d rather have an everyday player than a 7th-round draft pick, no?

$5 million a year for a third pair d man!!!!hamhius is not worth half as much as coburn… he won’t hit and he’s not that great a skater… trade his rights ASAP… never… never … never let anyone put a gun to your head… let him play for some 2nd tier team where he belongs…

$5MM for a d-man

If we’re going to offer any d-man $5MM, I say take a run at Paul Martin. You get a guy who is 29, he’s a true #1 and signing him would destroy NJ’s blue line.

But we don’t really need another offensive defenseman. A shot blocker like Volchenkov would be great though.

by Giroux-ling for Cheese on Jun 25, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

not sure in what world Paul Martin is an “offensive defenseman”, but ok. The implications of having Paul Martin would be most excellent, problem is that he’s probably more in the $6MM range, than the $5MM range.

1) That name makes you, instantly, my favorite new user.

2) Not sure I agree about Paul Martin, but we can pay Volchenkov less to anchor the third pairing, and he’ll do it with complete awesome.

by Snevik on Jun 25, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Volchenkov is going to be one of the most sought after FA defensemen come July 1st. He’ll easily make north of $5 million.

If we’re unwilling to use $5 million on Hamhuis, we’re probably going to be unwilling to throw that much, or more, at Volchenkov.

If we are not going to sign Hammer why give up Parent. Yes we would get a 7th rounder But what are the chances of a 7th rd pick making an even moderate impact. The wild are interested in Carter and have the 9th pick. Also since the draft went from 9 to 7 rounds in 2005 we have picked 7 goalies and 0 nhl games played between them. Bernier would be a thought, not sure on the asking price. Just random thoughts

Ok. Something must be wrong here. Why would the 5 mil figure be floating around this guys name. 2 seasons he was -4. He’s 25 point man… I don’t get it….I’m sure he and his agent know that NOBODY will pay that kinda of cash for em. 2.5 mil maybe….I’m sure something will be worked out and we will all breathe a sigh of relief. There are lots of capable 3rd pair UFAs that should come a lot cheaper.

According to Panaccio...

The hang up isn’t money or length. It’s where he’s playing, how many minutes, etc.

I think that’s more of an ego thing than anything, to be honest. He wants to be a top pairing D-man. Don’t blame him. But you’re not gonna crack the Pronger-Carle love fest. Ideally, he’s on the third pair, but he probably doesn’t want that either. He probably presumed one of two things:

Pairing with Pronger.
Pairing with Kimmo.

Both of those are likely not to happen, at least from what it seems…

by Dylan Marck on Jun 25, 2010 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

I would pair him with Kimmo if he wants. Right now he’s probably better than Coburn, and Coburn can enjoy some weaker competition.

I have to repeat...this "ham" tastes like chicken"...

Everybody knows the image and reputation that the Flyers have. Players either embrace it or run from it. Joffrey Lupul knew it and embraced it ("I feel tougher already"), Danny Briere knew it when he took less money to become a Flyer rather than a Canadien…Dan Hamhuis ran from it. This "ham" tastes like chicken to me!
