Philadelphia Flyers select D Ricard Blidstrand, LW Brendan Ranford with 206th, 209th picks

Two late seventh rounders wrap up the draft for the Philadelphia Flyers. With the 206th pick, acquired a few minutes ago from Carolina for Jonathan Matsumoto, the Flyers have selected Ricard Blidstrand, a defenseman from Sweden.

His profile on Eliteprospects.com:

A big and strong defenseman. Plays determined and is pretty physical in his own end. Moves the puck well and has a very good shot from the point. Passing game is a bit suspect as well as his decision making at times.

With their final pick, the 209th overall, the Flyers picked Brendan Ranford, a winger from Kamloops of the WHL. Ranford scored 29 goals, 65 points in 72 games with Kamloops.

That does it for the draft.

I feel bad that this topic has no posts.

So, I’ll ask an obvious question – is this guy any relation to Bill Ranford, the former NHL goaltender?

You made me curious, so I looked it up… it’s his nephew.

Holy crap! :)

I’d say “Blind squirrel…nut”, but apparently people are sick of reading that here. ;)

It seems like people in the NHL who have the same last name more often than not are related. Bill Ranford seemed like he ought to have a son old enough to be in the NHL draft – thus the guess.

To make this a more Flyers-specific post, there is no goaltender who epitomizes “journeyman” more than Ranford. His stats: http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8450651

So, remember that this fellow helped the Edmonton Oilers win a Stanley Cup in 1990 despite the Oilers being without Wayne Gretsky and Paul Coffey, and he started in place of Grant Fuhr. (They didn’t have Glen Sather as coach either, but I can’t figure out if that is a plus or a minus.)

Food for thought… ;)
