Can I just say after reading Timo’s full quotes is that the man is awesome and he needs to retire as a Flyer?

Yes, he absolutely hit the nail squarely on the head.
“he needs to retire as a Flyer”…but only in the very, very distant future.
I agree, but he’s got 3 more years as it is, so it’s totally not something we need to worry about right now.

There's so many people I want to see retire as Flyers
Lappy, Pronger (almost a guarantee), Timmo, Richie, Gagne, Giroux…somehow I feel sad knowing that it’s unlikely that all of them will

I think Prongs, Timmo, Gags are strong bets. Honestly I don’t know about Richie…Giroux i could see but don’t want to get too optimistic. Lappy I would love to have for the rest of his career but who knows.

3. Insert Dan Carcillo into the lineup in Game 6. The Flyers didn’t play with an edge in their 7-4 loss Sunday night in Game 5. Carcillo’s energy was needed. JVR (goal) should stay in the lineup. Arron Asham had a team-high seven hits, so Peter Laviolette may be reluctant to sit him. Darroll Powe is a candidate to sit, but only if Ian Laperriere takes his spot on the penalty kill. Laperriere has only been used sparing on the PK since returning from a head injury.
The best solution: Dress five defensemen and 13 forwards. Oskars Bartulis played just 1:58, so a sixth D-man isn’t really needed. Yes, it’s risky if a game goes into overtime and the defensemen are dragging. But it’s worth the risk to have Carcillo available when a jolt of energy is needed.
Daily News
What do you think? I still can’t help it and be a bit worried that Carcillo might get too many calls. That he might want to try to do too much and send himself in the box again. I’m indecisive about this…

First of all the refs were horrible again.
I never complain about the officiating to this point but it was terrible. I know you can hit to complete the play but most of the buff hits were way late and away from the puck. Oh and the hooking call may have been the worst yet. Mcreary needs to retire. Oh and they missed a high stick on us when the ref was right infront of the guy. Then the icing on the cake was Briere how do you miss that one. Just changes the way the game is played and the hooking penalty was called at a huge time in the game. it happens on every play I am so glad quenville got to make the call from the bench. it was such a joke. I know the boys came out slow but they were playing well and the home ice ref advantage happened. So I expect atleast 8 minutes of home power plays in game six. A homer series because the refs are feeding into it.

I appologise for him.
Conversing and arguing are different than just being a dick. That being said, Brent Seabrook has seven stitches above his eye that didn’t get called either. Also, Pronger cross checks everything on skates and never gets the box for it. The wost call by far this series was a slash by Sharp when he wasn’t within six feet of anybody on the ice. The Flyers were given not one penalty in game one despite at least four blatant ones on a puck carrier (3 high sticks, and a trip) Now that you all want to kill me, can you see how this argument is invalid? We both have every reason to hate the refs this series, they have been horrible. But they have been horrible to both teams, and frankly, the Flyers have benefited more.
To even complain as a flyers fan about the officiating, if you can call it that, is absolutely ridiculous. Yes, we got away with a few last night but I am pretty sure the scales are still far from even. I understand that it stinks that the games are not consistent form game to game or series to series but you guys get away with murder out there most of the time.

I agreed with you, until you said the Flyers have benefited more…unless you are simply saying the Flyers special teams PP has been better than the Hawks, because that I can agree with. Saying the Flyers have benefitted more from the calls regardless if they scored or not is false.
Scott Hartnell got a penalty in game 4 for banging his stick on the boards. If that’s not the epitome of a bad call, I don’t know what is.

My worries here is that the officiating is going the other way with the officials trying to “balance things out.” Either it should be called the same for both sides or let them play.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
trying to “even out” bad calls just leads to more bad calls (or noncalls). I just want the refs to do the job as best they can, and if their best isn’t good enough, go find another job.
Watch it with the jinxing!
Time for some thrillin' heroics!
I would like to see the refs able to (to use a football reference) “Pickup the flag” on some calls, especially when a call is coming from the trailing official away from the play (unless of course that is where the infraction occurs). Just because it appears there is a penalty, doesn’t mean there actually is. If they cannot call penatlies because they did not see the infraction (See: High sticks on Campbell, Briere in game 5), they should be able to agree on not calling bogus penalties because one official thought he saw an infraction.
Oh, and the “Flyers getting away with murder most of the time,” is a phrase I never thought I’d live to see in print.
That’s hysterical.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
I actually watched game 5 with a guy who officiates in my men’s league. He was laughing at the ridiculousness of the calls. The Pronger call was absolutely crap in his opinion because he saw Hawks players getting away with much worse. He isn’t a fan of the Flyers or Hawks, so he was an unbiased observer, stating, “if the refs call that one, they need to call everything” etc.
Of course, we all know that isn’t happening.

I’m not really understanding Oskars’ total lack of ice time, but I don’t feel comfortable with the idea of having no 6th d-man on the bench. Plus I don’t think Carcillo’s agitation did much against Chicago; not because Carcillo’s abilities aren’t useful, but everything is going back and forth so fast he doesn’t have the kind of time needed to really get under their skin. Just my opinion, anyway.

I’d like to see them try Bartulis as that down the road. He was a sometimes-defenseman, sometimes-center with CSKA Moscow, and didn’t switch to pure D until Moncton.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
The Flyers didn’t play with an edge in their 7-4 loss Sunday night in Game 5
Could there ever be a more meaningless statement. They were a bit flat but scored 4 fucking goals against a really good fucking hockey team. We don’t have a team of spring chickens and to assume we can sustain constant pressure every game is just stupid. Not even the Hawks can do that. If the team was a bit flat then the coach or team should adjust their game plan accordingly and not look for some X factor to give them an edge. Blood doping that’ll give you an edge. The best way to play thru fatigue is play smart. The only reason to have put Carbomb in would have been for a fresher pair of legs – edge my ass.
Edge would be the last thing you need when the officials are calling ticky tack shit. Carbomb would never have seen the ice last night.

Heh.
So the media is already handing the Cup to Chicago. On NBC last night, they made comments about Hossa not wanting to talk about his last two Finals appearances, but that next week he’d be happy to tell you about this one. That Puck Daddy article about Pronger boldly states “Series over.” And there are plenty of other scattered comments about it “looking likely Chicago can repeat this performance on Wednesday night.”
All of this brings to mind another famous moment in Chicago Tribune history:

This is another reason that I’m somewhat not-completely-unhappy with the result last night, i.e., the media (and some unsophisticated fans) are already seeing the series as over. So, we are completely back in our underdog role. We seem to do our best work when we’re firmly in that place.

My sports hate for this Chicago team now knows no bounds. Beyond the whining from Q about Pronger to the league, the cherry picker Buttfug, the now-dead-to-me Patrick Sharp, the horrible mullet on Kane..ugh…let’s just say they belong in the same division as the Red Wings.

Kane looks like trailer trash with that mullet. I actually had a mullet back in the day but I never shaved the sides of my head like he did. Bad idea.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Kane is good I will admit but to say he’s a star with skills like Lecavalier, Crosby, Ovechkin is a joke he’s looked non existent in these playoffs and I’d take Toews over him any day.
who wouldn't?
You’d have to be something special to take Kane over Captain Marvelous. As much as I like Kane, he has absolutely nothing on Toews, except perhaps being a bit more elusive in the offensive zone.
Dude, Tocchet and Zezel (may he RIP) would think his mullet looks bad. Tocchet rocked the mullet.

"Wait...
what position do you play again"…hilarious ending to a pretty good video. So is Buff’s name really Norwegian in origin, my gf was asking last night and it’s the first hockey related question i haven’t had an answer for her.
Thank you, and despite his awesome roots & and overall enjoyment in his style of play, I still hate the man. He is too big & ugly to act like a child when things don’t go his way.
i have my issues with him too. mostly that he’s just lazy until he “feels like” playing, and usually only against d-men he matches up well against. I’d actually expect him not to “try” against the other Flyers d-men either except that they must feel like favorable match-ups to him after having to deal with Pronger not letting him get away with anything.
But watching Buff play in regular season is an exercise in patience and self-restraint.
by puppetmasterp on Jun 7, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, from what I watch of the Hawks, I kind of notice that too. He can be physically dominant, but it seems like, unless he knows he can impose his will, he doesn’t really put that much effort forward. Of course I haven’t logged enough viewing time on Buff to really say that with much clout, and what appears to be a lack of effort to my eyes might actually be a product of his type of game not meshing well with the style the Hawks play. But i tend to think it’s more of him being lazy after seeing how he can really get after players on the forecheck last night.
Fielder has to be the fattest vegetarian I’ve ever seen. He must eat other vegetarians.

Halladay is still awesome.

Flyers are 3-0
When facing elimination this season (5-0 in games where someone can be eliminated). Maybe all we need to push us over the edge is that extra sense of urgency that an elimination opportunity brings. Though I agree with Timonen, last night there was very little puck pursuit. Chicago was flying to pucks and getting a lot of bounces (and taking advantage of some ref interference early), but for the first 25 minutes or so Flyers were on their heels.
5-0 in games where someone can be eliminated? Did you mean 7-0? (Game 82, ECQF Game 5, ECSF Games 4, 5, 6, 7, ECF Game 5)

Yes, but sometimes the love of the Flyers is overtaken by the hatred of losing. I’m not saying they’ll be throwing stuff at the Flyers, rather the Blackhawks celebration. I know if they do lose Wednesday, I’ll give them a standing O, and then applaud Toews if he is lifting the cup b/c it is a special thing and should be treated as such. But again, I still think this goes 7.

A small victory to be sure, but it does shows that Pronger’s mind games have an effect. (Why would you make a big deal about picking up the puck otherwise?)
Just skating off the ice without it would have been the best approach. “We won, and we don’t care about the damn puck.” would have been the most effective message to send.

After seeing that, I was convinced that we have a really good chance in game 6. If the hawks were really locked and focused on the only goal, they wouldn’t have cared about that puck. They care which means they can be knocked off focus again.

If by "solid [AHL track record]" you mean lazy and soft, sure, he’d be a solid right wing.

“Trade yaHensuckHensick for Lappy.”
Not to be all “I hate Jon Matsumoto”, but if the organization won’t give him a chance to play in the NHL – and he’s a lefty, so he can’t shift to wing and find himself useful – why not trade unwanted RFA center for unwanted RFA center? Maybe Hensick does leave for Europe, maybe he’s not good, but all you’re doing is swapping a guy you aren’t going to re-sign for a guy who might not play for you. Hensick does have 11 more AHL points than GP, he’s a plus-1 his last two years (compared to Matsumoto’s minus-31 his last two years), so why not?

He’s from Jersey, so I’m sure the Flyers have been waiting for him to be available. But we don’t have any picks to offer in compensation, so I’m not too worried about that. Maybe ANA realizes they can’t/won’t pay him and the Flyers swing a trade to get the rights, but I think “pulling a Penner” is extremely unlikely.

I’m just thinking about who can play RW alongside JVR and Giroux. I like Asham, I just don’t think he’s the best fit there. If you can trade a guy you aren’t going to use (Moto) for a guy the Avalanche aren’t going to use (Hensick), see if Hensick will play RW. Write an escape clause in the contract where he gets released if the Flyers waive him at any point in the season. To me, it’s a no-lose situation.

Kulemin is a RW to isn’t he? he’s flown under the radar in Toronto for two season, I’ll take 15 goal output from a third line right winger anyday.
Unfortunately, he’s a left-handed LW. His Hockey’s Future scouting report makes him sound like an excellent fit for the Flyers third-line though:
While Kulemin is unlikely to ever develop into a top line scoring sniper, his upside is that of a very capable third line checking forward who would also be able to fill in on the top lines in the case of injury. Kulemin’s game seems easily transferable to the NHL, and his physical style will work well now that he has filled out some and gained more strength.

A LW/RW guy that I really like is Fabian Bunnstrom from Dallas. Could be a really good payer with good, but at worst hes another Betts/Powe linemates
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
He’s coming off a pretty bad year and he’s another left-handed LW.
They’re both (Kulemin and Brunnstrom) solid pickups, but the Flyers desperately need RW help and not LW.

Well, Leino, Briere, Carter, Giroux, JVR, and Lappy can all play RW or LW, some even center. It really depends on what we need on what Lave says the lineups are going to be next year.
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
This is true. But next year, counting players already signed, the lines can/will look like this:
Gagne – Richards – Carter
Hartnell – Briere – Leino
JVR – Giroux – ??
?? – Betts – Laperriere
You already have two guys playing out of position (Carter/Leino) and your top 6 is already filled. If you sign a left-handed LW, the only right-handed players in the top-9 would be Carter, Briere, and Giroux, two of which will be playing center.
I just don’t think it’s optimal.

Is Powe not signed? (not that im making my point with this, JW)
Also, Carter was drafted as a RW, so I dont think hes really out of position, and Leino was a European player, where all three forwards usually switch position during play anyway, so I can assume he can play all three positions (not starting at center, because of faceoffs). And yes, we are short at right handed forwards. But, is that a reason to sign a lower quality right hander over a better left handed player? I know there are two side to this argument (look at the Phillies lineup). I just think the guy will be cheap, and can be an effective sniper for Giroux and JVR, who are both very good playmakers.
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
Powe is an RFA, so he’s not signed.
I disagree about Carter being drafted as a RW, but the crux of your argument is definitely a valid one. I just think, when talking about RFAs, you should target a RW when you have Gagne, Leino, Hartnell, and JVR as natural LWs. Now, if you’re talking about UFAs, I’m more lenient towards signing the better winger regardless, but RFAs almost always require a trade or overpaying while relinquishing draft picks. With that high of a price, I think RFAs should be more targeted.

the most annoying
at least to me, was SportCenter last night spending time musing over the fact that with the NBA finals going on (in Game 2) that Michael Jordan would want to go to the UC to watch a SCF Game 5. As if his presence there validated hockey or something. gag.

Bah!
I don’t know how you feel, but that would insult me as a Blackhawks fan. Michael Jordan was a star in his own sport, but I don’t give a shit about his crossover appeal. They are two different sports and the NBA sucks now; in part due to the success of Jordan himself (ironically).
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
i had no issue with him being there
especially since the UC was his house too, and he built it’s mystique from the moment the UC opened (in the early 90s). It’s the fact that they were like “OMG why on earth would a basketball legend have any interest in hockey?” when MJ is fairly invested in Chicago and the bulls are not in the NBA finals.
AND Jordan has been to Blackhawk games before, so it’s not like it was his first time. (I heard he was even at SCF game 1). there’s the amazing possibility that he might actually LIKE the sport, imagine that.

Perhaps it all stems back to Tiger Woods quote on how he didn’t care for hockey or follow it that closely when they asked him who he was picking to win the cup a year or so ago. Classic rivalries and the predictability / safety contained therein. Everything is as it should be and I’m going to watch it because it’s familiar to me, even though I don’t watch baseball!”
See, hockey has it’s rivalries. Thankfully, it doesn’t have the timeless/Oh-my-God-here-we-go-again match-ups like Yankees/BoSox or Lakers/Celtics. Boring!

I would love for both to have minor tweaks (out for a couple games) right before the WC, just to utterly spite Bettman. I won’t wish severe injuries on guys, because I never like to see a “real” injury, but the little ones that always come up during the season I’ll wish for specific timing.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
How about Ovechkin getting suspended for a hit on Crosby (→ minor injury) prior the WC? Both out of the game. That would be too ridiculous.

This is awesome. You should write a book on How To Be A Sports Mom.
When I have kids, I’m going to give them time out when they misbehave. But my time outs will be in the form of hockey penalties.
Sis (Trying to get into her room): “Bro, let me into my room!”
Bro (Blocking the doorway): “No!”
Sis: “Daddy!”
Me: “Bro, I think you need a time out. That’s two minutes for interference.”
I sure hope I don’t have to call any match penalties for deliberate attempts to injure.

Well, being a Sports Mom (or Sports Dad) involves brainwashing. It goes without saying.
When my father started taking me to Flyers games, Clarkie and Barber were still on the team. I was raised with the belief that Bob Clarke walked on water. My father would always say this, on the way to every single game: “All of the other Flyers goof around sometimes, but not Bobby Clarke. He works hard every single game.”
So of course, when Clarkie retired, I cried because I thought “Oh no, they Flyers are all going to goof around sometimes now!”

A recap, and a look back
I had a bad feeling about this game, right from the start, when NBC put on an embarrassing recreation of the game 4 Giroux goal, illustrating more than anything that Mike Millbury’s mediocre skills as a player have degenerated in recent years to those of a C level peewee hockey player.
It’s bad enough that we have to listen to Millbury who has a long established history of hating the Flyers, do commentary, but now we have to watch enjoyable plays that speak for themselves, be over analyzed to the point of parody and ridicule.
Between Pierre McGuire, Ed Olczyk and Emerick, I doubt seriously NBC could have assembled a group to provide play by play that harbours more anti-Flyer bias, and while they no doubt do try their pathetic best to suppress it, they just can’t seem to contain their glee at things going Chicago’s way. Case in point, while they replayed Hartnell’s hit that sent a Chicago D-Man flying, about all that was said was “Ohhhhh” while Byfuglien gets one huge hit on Pronger, and we have to endure countless reviews and analysis of how this single play that otherwise resulted in nothing important happening, somehow is the focal point of the series.
How many times in this series have we had to listen to the commentators bemoan penalties, they think the Flyers “got away with” while sitting silently on Hawks non-calls most egregiously the 10 stitch Duncan Keith wack to the face on Briere. “Briere’s bleeding badly…” as if he had magically inflicted this on himself. Where was the outrage, and call for the required 4 minute penalty?
FUK NBC’S COMMENTATORS. You suck as sports journalists!
(There I said it… Rant mode off)
Certainly that was a disappointing effort, but let’s give credit to the Hawks:
-They came out and played with grit, determination and an out and out physical assault. It was plain and simple, one of the most awesome 11 minute stretches of team hockey any team has mustered in the playoffs. The Flyers were literally in shock, and they did not adapt well, or do things to counteract the pressure. Plays have to be made, and up and down the ice, the Flyers did not make plays, the Hawks did, and that is why the game was 3-0.
-Now onto some of the things I think the Flyers did wrong, especially in decisions coming from behind the bench that I think contributed substantially to making the Flyers look like a clown car with its wheels coming off.
I wish Lavvy would drop from his repertoire — the mix line that he used to start the game with Giroux on wing instead of Carter.
PLEASE STOP DOING THIS!!!!
When Giroux is on his game, he can turn things to our favour, but the complete debacle of the first shift set the tone, and completely derailed Giroux who played one of his worst games in the series, and probably took the wind out of Carter’s sails as well. A huge part of what makes us dangerous is that our 3rd line can take the momentum and establish our offensive game. This obviously did not happen.
Worse yet, it allowed Quenville’s change to shift his shutdown D off the first line and onto Briere seem like a work of genius, rather than a risky gamble that we could use to make them pay. You’re trying to get Jeff Carter going in the series — what help is it to sit your leading scorer, and one of our best defensive forwards on the first shift of the game, especially after he potted the empty netter the game before? I was just baffled by this.
-Leighton was in no way to blame for our being down 3-0. I don’t care how many of you Leighton haters come out of the woodwork to berate the guy and claim that we’d somehow have been up 2-0 if only Leighton hadn’t let in a goal, but I have news for you based on what was going on, the majority of the goalies in the NHL would have let in 2 or 3 or even more goals. Chicago came out the hungrier team, were all over the Flyers both physically and via bold challenges from their D men in support of the O, and the Flyers simply buckled under the pressure.
I deleted the game after it was over and have no plan to revisit that nightmare, but I seem to recall the shots being something like 11-0 early on, with a huge percentage of those shots being good scoring chances, and it wasn’t even that close. In fact Leighton made some good saves in that early barrage. The Flyers dumped the puck into the opposing team’s zone maybe twice. The Hawks could have pulled Niemi for an extra attacker, it was actually that bad. The D and wings were so tight, they repeatedly lost the puck, dumped it into board pressure and turned it over at our own blue line. I mean it was bad - right?
-Perfunctory griping about the refs:
To make matters worse, we were subject to the infliction of some of the worse reffing of the series, so the momentum was about as one sided as it gets. Chicago deserves total props for their effort and play in the first, without a doubt, so I don’t want this to be confused, but I was really really pissed off that we would see that type of shit reffing in such a pivotal game, and the bottom line is that the Hawks in no way needed help, but they got some anyways.
Chicago came out to make a physical statement, and they got away with murder all over the ice, from a letter of the law standpoint, which is fine by me, if you let the teams play. But last night it looked like the refs were equipped with special goggles that only see white and orange away jerseys. The back breaking penalty on Pronger was an absolute joke, and seemed to be once again a call spurred on by the Chicago crowd, who scream for a penalty every time 2 players come together anywhere on the ice. I also can’t help but wonder what we might have done with 4 minutes of PP time, with Duncan Keith sitting in the box as Danny Briere got his 10 stitches to close a wound which happened right off the frigging face off. I continue not to understand how they miss calls like this on both sides of the ice.
-Lavvy continues to drive me absolutely batshit bonkers with his goalie games. So we survived the assault and it was nearly as bad as it gets: 3-0 down, but you could see towards the end of the first that the Flyers had started to calm down, and the team was starting to work their way back to the game. Yes it’s 3 goals down, but then there was that matter of game 7 in Boston.
I was absolutely stunned to see Boosh in the net at the start of period 2! Instead of giving Leighton a chance to build his confidence back, and allow the team to play their way back in the game (which in fact is exactly what happened) we once again see goalie roulette, featuring a guy who was knocked out of the series with 2 sprained knees reinserted. To what end???? Boosh ultimately would go on to make some really nice saves while also giving up 3 goals.
I just don’t understand the benefits of this, and in hindsight what is far worse is that we actually had a chance in this game and it ended up being squandered, because after we potted a couple, you could see the pressure shifting right back onto the Hawks. Sometimes when the worse thing you can imagine happens, you loosen up. The team played like shit around the guy, and the Hawks were buzzing around the net, screening and doing everything they vowed they wanted to do. That is not a goalie problem it’s a goddamn team defense and lack of offense problem. Putting in a goalie who is quite simply, just not physically ready to stand on his head isn’t fair to Boosh, or the other players. The goalie pull should be reserved for times when your goalie has absolutely sucked, and cost you a game that you could by all rights be up in, not a single period where your entire team got shellacked all across the ice. BAD MOVE. DOESN’T WORK.
-Will someone please write a coaching manual that explains that pulling your goalie while 2 goals down with over 2 minutes to go, is a move that more than likely insures that the other team gets to spend those last 2 minutes celebrating their 3 goal win while their fans enjoy the equivalent of a humiliating 3 goal blowout, instead of giving your team to maybe pot one more and make it really really tight? Maybe we could send said manual to Lavvy over the summer?
To summarize, this was one of Lavvy’s worse coached games of the playoffs if not the year. That exacerbated a confused effort from a team that were essentially beaten in one one period of a 3 period game.
-Light at the end of the tunnel:
Despite getting rolled at various times, the team continued to counterpunch and show that they have the ability to undress the hawks D on a regular basis. If Richards or Leino were able to pot one of those 2 empty net shots, what might have happened?
The Hawks have played from a lead all year long, and they sure are comfortable there. We can not afford to let them play from ahead, and so far at home we haven’t. This makes for a clear goal for the Flyers: you can’t sit back and wait to see what the Hawks are going to do.
It goes without saying that the team needs to rebound from a reallly bad effort where we were outplayed, outmatched and outcoached.
The same could be said for the what the Hawks experienced in game 4.
And we responded from our worst effort in the Montreal series with a complete 180, just as the Hawks did in game 5.
This is a glorious once in a lifetime opportunity. Now it’s up to the players.
Gizmoitus is right
-Refs were horrible
-Lavy was a moron for trying to be cute with his lines
-shouldn’t have pulled Leighton
-Flyers can rebound in game 6

Sure HuckNZ
Do you have to pay for your interweb by the byte in NZ?
Cliffs:
-NBC’s commentators are biased against the Flyers and kinda suck
-Great effort by the Hawks in first, but we overreacted by pulling Leighton
-Other Lavvy coaching flubs contributed to end result, leaving bad taste in the mouth.
-Overall, getting your ass handed to you sometimes is a wakeup you need. Let’s hope that’s the case. The players need to play the games now.
The whole thing downloads just fine
It’s an attention span problem.
Thanks for the digestible summary.
Question for anyone out there!
If Seabrook was standing in the crease when he palmed the puck last night why wasn’t there a penalty shot awarded? The rule says nothing about laying on the ice it just says you can’t close your hand on the puck when in the crease, right? If this was discussed ad nauseam please forgive me but I have been unable to read all the comments and quite frankly just to damn angry.
Just Call Me "M"!
I don’t think the puck was in the crease, his skates were there, but the puck wasn’t.

Ditto. I don’t know he was ever in the crease, but either way, the spirit of the rule is to prevent D from diving into the net and grabbing loose pucks with their hands.
All good answers but the the first thing I thought of was his feet were technically in the crease and he closed his hand on the puck and tossed behind the net. It is semantics yes, but just wondering what the rules states. Maybe it is freezing the puck with your hand in the crease.
Dragongirl!!!!!! We need interpretation of the rule book.
Just Call Me "M"!
67.4 Penalty Shot – If a player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team.
Note that there’s nothing in Rule 67 about any of those things anywhere else – the minor penalty in 67.2 is for catching and skating with the puck. I don’t know how the rule is intended to be interpreted, but that’s the actual wording in the book.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I don’t think I’ve ever officially been summoned before, wow.
Everything is in Rule 67, Handling Puck. Anyway, the closing his hand around the puck part says nothing about where it happens:
67.2 Minor Penalty – Player – A player shall be permitted to catch theI totally get what The Dark said about the “catching it and skating with it” part, but since the official minor penalty is titled “Closing Hand on Puck” according to Table 2, it makes sense to be able to just apply the wording of the title to what happened without worrying about the definition in 67.2 too much. But the Penalty Shot part is more specific:
puck out of the air but must immediately place it or knock it down to
the ice. If he catches it and skates with it, either to avoid a check or to
gain a territorial advantage over his opponent, a minor penalty shall
be assessed for "closing his hand on the puck".
67.4 Penalty Shot – If a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while playNote that penalty shot part doesn’t say anything about catching the puck out of the air… it’s more directed at closing your hand around the puck at ice level. An argument could be made on semantics, but that’s not the way the context of Rule 67 reads to me. So what happened falls fairly clearly into 67.2, but to put it into 67.4 is a little sketchier and would require more arguing. Since 67.2 doesn’t matter where on the ice it happens, it wasn’t a clear cut case for a Penalty Shot, IMO.
is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or
gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease
area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall
be awarded to the non-offending team. See also Rule 63 – Delaying
the Game.

I started to read 67.4 that way too, that it was about the puck being on the ice. But then I decided I was parsing it wrong, that it’s not:
(falls on/holds/picks up/gathers into body or hands) the puck from the ice in the goal crease area
but is:
(falls on/holds/picks up/gathers into body or hands from the ice) the puck in the goal crease area
i.e. that the "from the ice’ part applies only to the gathering-into-body part.
Like you say, it’s a semantic argument. I’m sure (or at least I’d hope) the refs go over this stuff quite well and know what’s intended, but it’s not obvious to an untrained third party.
You are a total sweetheart and think of it as more of a petition then a summons.
Everyone has pretty much answered my question that merely grabbing the puck out of the air, pulling it towards the body while pivoting to throw it behind the net and standing in the crease really isn’t covered in the penalty shot rule. My dad and I immediately questioned what the rule stated. Well C’est La vie, man am I still aggravated as hell anyway. Thanks All!

What about Game 3, when each team had 3 power play opportunities?
Know what the difference was? The Flyers were 2/3 and the Hawks 0/3.
I was at Game 4, and while the Flyers got away with some stuff (as did the Hawks, mind), the Hawks did a lot of stupid stuff… particularly when they were in the offensive zone, and they got caught.

Welcome to the wonder of the Chicago Public School system. A wretched hive of scum and villainy, accountable only to the Mayor of Chicago. A freshman has about a 50/50 shot of graduating high school in four years, and a 6% chance of getting a bachelor’s degree by age 25.

haha…as a school-counselor-in-training, I know about the joys of the public school systems in urban areas. I’m doing my internship work in the Milwaukee Public School system, so I get to see the failings in full force.
(Please note that this is not a “Philly ROX! Chicago is teh suxxors!!!” argument. Just a general observation about the public schooling in urban areas…)
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
they let go of bullshit calls
2 things:
1). Given all of the stronger hooks that went uncalled, Pronger’s hook that was called was an absolute bullshit call. Not the reason the Flyers lost, but a bullshit call.
2). This was mentioned above but penalties in Game 3 were called at 3 apiece. 3 on Chicago. 3 on Philadelphia. Chicago went 0 for 3 on the PP that game, while the Flyers went 2 for 3. There is your difference in Game 3, pal.
Now that’s out of the way, I would like to encourage Travis, Geoff, and Ben to never ban you. Your posts have brought me with nothing but delight and laughter. Thank you, my friend.

So can we get a clarification, because your acuity with the written word isn’t exactly the best. Am I right then in summarizing your main thesis as:
“The NHL is actively attempting to help the Flyers win the series by providing Philly with a preponderance of calls (and non-calls) so as to lengthen out the series. "
Also, I’d like to better understand your point about the game being over in the first period considering that the Flyers scored 4 goals, the Hawks won 7-4 which ncluded an empty net goal. I mean, they were up 3-0 in the first, to that we can agree. But i really need to understand the internal workings of your analysis when in fact, in order to actually win the game required at minimum 2 subsequent goals to be scored in the following two periods.
Really dude?
Try showing some class, it goes much further than being an ass.

My thoughts from Game 5, because I missed the post-game boat
The goals the Flyers did score in the end were relatively easy for the goal scorer, and the build up constituted of throwing pucks at Niemi and waiting to see where they bounced (save for Gagne’s goal, that was a heck of a play by Leino). More of the same please. Niemi was having a terrible time tracking the puck, maybe the trick for beating him is keeping it low and getting rebounds. Briere et al seem to have worked this out, at least.
Carter, Richards or Gagne need to get something going in the worst possible way. Carter has been invisible, Richards only really seen in Game 4 and Gagne has been pretty good at putting pucks on to opposition sticks. That line has to be shuffled because its not working.
I have never felt worse after a loss.
