I know this was discussed yesterday, but I say start Leighton.

I hope Giroux puts in a couple more goals for another JJ moment, although I can do without the OT.

well, the NHL season is down to 1 or 2 games…I guess I should start planning what to do for the summer, since I’m not a baseball fan.

Thinking...

Back in 1989, the Flyers were playing the Penguins in the second round. The series was tied at two games apiece heading into Game 5, which was played in Pittsburgh.

Of course, Game 5 was the one where Mario Lemieux scored 5 goals, added 3 assists, and helped his Penguins roll to a 10-7 victory.

The most telling part of that game was the second half of it, though. The Pens were up something like 7-1 halfway through the game, but the Flyers kept chipping away and had actually made it 9-3 by the second intermission and 9-7 late in the 3rd before the Pens got an empty netter to seal the deal.

To many on the Flyers, the latter half of the game was more reflective of how that series was playing out. Tim Kerr said that Tom Barrasso was “a hell of a goalie,” but that the Flyers were “not having any trouble scoring on him.” He then summed up everything by saying, “Don’t worry, we’re going to win.”

Kerr was prescient, indeed: The Flyers took Game 6 at home, 6-2, then stunned the Pens by winning Game 7 at the Igloo, 4-1, thanks in large part to Ken Wregget of all people.

Let’s fast-forward to the present, where we find ourselves in a similar circumstance: The Flyers have just been shelled in a Game 5, and are at home with their backs to the wall. But much like that Game 5 in Pittsburgh 21 years ago, it was a Tale of Two Games. The first was the first period, where the Hawks dominated and took a 3-0 lead. The second was the rest of the way, where the Flyers and Hawks scored 4 apiece… but if you only count goals scored on goalies (as opposed to the empty netter by Byfuglien), the Flyers outscored the Hawks 4-3.

This brings us to the goaltending. Niemi has been a hell of a goalie in these playoffs, but the truth is that the Flyers have not had any trouble scoring on him. The Hawks have scored 16 goals against Leighton, but the Flyers have potted 18 against Niemi. Aside from Game 2, where he only gave up one goal, the Flyers have scored 4 goals against him every game (except Game 1, when they scored 5).

The Flyers need to step up in a big way tomorrow night, but we can rest assured that they will come out swinging, and go down battling if it comes to that. If they can force a Game 7, anything can happen.

Go Flyers.

I am actually fairly confident that they will win game 6 for many of the reasons that came out of game 5. If they had played great in game 5 and lost, they wouldn’t necessarily feel the urgency to buckle down and get back to doing the little things. After you get your ass kicked, generally, it serves as a pretty good wake up call. I think we saw that from the Hawks in game 5, after really getting spanked in game 4.

Win or lose though, it’s been a hell of a playoffs for the Flyers. They’ve played 3 more series than I thought they would.

The Philly Way

I’ve been rooting for the Flyers since the first Cup in ‘74 when I was 7 years old, and for Philly teams in general all my life. For whatever reason, Philly teams always take the most challenging road to glory and really make their fans dig in. It certainly weeds out a lot of bandwagon fans because it can be a tough thing to hold on through the peaks and valleys. Given where the Flyers were at the end of ’07 when they finished dead last with (gasp!) a mere 56 pts, I’m extremely proud of this team. The performance in Game 5 is simply par for the course for a Philly team, and they will move on and rebound in Game 6. I truly believe they can do this. Go, Flyers, Go!!!

In Latvia, they're rooting for Bartulis' team, the Filadelfijas Flaieri!

by LVHokejs on Jun 8, 2010 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

I'm right with you

I was 7 as well when they won their first Cup in ‘74, and you’re absolutely right – when Philly wins a championship in anything, there’s always a flair of the dramatic and unexpected to it. The only team that was favored start-to-finish and succeeded wildly in the post-season as a high seed was the 1982-83 76’ers (although Moses Malone’s prediction of “Fo, Fo, Fo” did add to the drama in that run as well – he was only one game off). The 1974-75 Flyers even had to compete with fog before winning their second Cup.

They’re going to take it tomorrow night and send it to seven – and I fully expect them to play their best possible game in both games.

GO FLYERS!!!!

Dream TV scenario:
-Versus gets exclusive rights to MLS, is able to air 50-75% of all games.
-ESPN uses programming space/money to get a healthy smattering of Premier League games not covered by FSC’s contract with the league.
-NHL’s new deal keep majority coverage with Versus/NBC, but ESPN puts in a substantial bid for “Thursday Night Hockey,” getting rights to a weekly or bi-weekly game of choice with limited flex scheduling to maneuver games to Thursdays (with Versus retaining the ability to either veto one game per week, or maybe have a set number of vetoes for the season).
-Versus changes its name to NBC Sports Network.

by Snevik on Jun 8, 2010 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

That would actually be a pretty awesome setup, assuming that MLS games Versus doesn’t air are available for local stations like 6abc to air (though I wonder if local rightsholders like them would be as interested in going through all the work and expense to air just 5-10 games a year as opposed to 20-22). I think it’s just as likely that if Comcast/NBC changes Versus’ name in a few years, it would be to Comcast SportsNet (thus you see CSN Philly emphasizing that it’s “CSN Philly,” not just CSN), but I agree that NBC Sports Network or something of the like would be better.

by Ben Feldman on Jun 8, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Comcast is definitely going to create something that rivals ESPN. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s exactly what you said, in terms of name.

The Copper & Blue

Strikes again. Really interesting idea, and a great read with a good analysis of what’s available to that strategy. I really like it, and would love to see it used this offseason.

I’m disappointed that Coburn and Carcillo weren’t worthy of a write up. Who do you keep in that scenario, or can the Flyers afford to keep both?

You think someone would actually tender Carcillo? I mean, maybe he’s worth a 3rd ($1.03-$1.56 mil) but not a second ($1.56-$3.12 mil).

Obviously, unless Coburn is tendered $3.12 mil or higher, it’s a no brainer that you keep Coburn. If somebody offers him $4.68 mil or higher, I think you let Coburn walk and take the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks.

Oh I actually hadn’t thought that all the way through, I just read that he was an RFA, I didn’t make the logic step that no one would actually give him an offer sheet.

I could see Coburn getting at least $3. It will be interesting to see what Wisneiwski and Erik Johnson get as other comparable RFA defenders

New Zealand's 4th best Philadelphia Flyers fan

by ToddtheFox on Jun 8, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s true. And I think it will be interesting to see if anybody goes after an RFA. GMs tend to look down upon poaching players like that, which is really stupid since it’s perfectly allowed. If someone wants to overpay for your stud, let them. Take the draft picks, take the cap space, and be just as good if not better.

by Geoff Detweiler on Jun 8, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Look out for Tampa in a few years. Yzerman knows what he’s doing, Verbeek knows what he’s doing, and Boucher knows what he’s doing (and all this means Vinik knows what he’s doing because he’s doing nothing after hiring Yzerman other than giving him access to the checkbook).

I found this interesting article about JJ. He doesn’t sound too happy with the Flyers:

I love doing both. I like my cake and eating it, too. But there are going to be conflicts. I will say this – the fact I do the pre- and postgame shows into the World Series, and the Phillies do everything they can possibly do to get me out there if it’s physically possible, that means a lot to me. It makes you feel part of it.

by Ben Feldman on Jun 8, 2010 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

I’ve been telling my friends for the past two years that the Phillies are grooming JJ to be their full-time play-by-play guy. No one believes me yet, but I can guarantee you that he will be their TV guy within the next five years. Look for him to be replaced by Tim Saunders for the Flyers. He has been on the radio for years and has more than deserved his chance to move to TV.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Jun 8, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I knew after they started using him as a fill-in play-by-play guy on radio last season that it was only a matter of time before he started getting some regular time, and now that he’s getting some regular time, his role will only be expanded in the coming years. Except that I think Franzke needs to be moved to TV, and I doubt JJ would take the full-time radio role. But either would be better than T-Mac, to say the least.

by Ben Feldman on Jun 8, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

T-Mac drives me up the wall. I’d rather hear JJ’s “It’s gone, goodbye” than T-Mac’s “GAAHNE!” any day.

Last season, JJ was doing the post-game show for the first game that Cliff Lee lost as a Phillie (which was his sixth start, I think) and he mentioned that “The Flyers left nine men on base” before correcting himself.

I thought, “Damn, Carter needs to hit with runners in scoring position.”

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Jun 8, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I was at that game. He gave up something like six runs over five innings to the Braves. Not quite what I expected to see. But yeah, it’s kinda funny when JJ mixes the two up (though not surprisingly he mixes up the Phillies with the Flyers a lot more than he mixes up the Flyers with the Phillies).

by Ben Feldman on Jun 8, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I will also say that I remember sometime last season JJ was doing a thing with (I think) Chuck LaMar on the pregame show where they were taking callers’ questions, and a lady called in and instead of asking a question to LaMar, asked JJ when he would become a main play-by-play guy for the Phillies, and all JJ would say is that he thought T-Mac and Franzke were doing a great job.

by Ben Feldman on Jun 8, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll miss JJ doing Flyers PBP but I’d be very, very happy if he replaced T-Mac for the Phils. Wheels can go too.

But… but… who would tell you that you’re watching a “really weird game?” How would you know that the pitcher you’re observing is a “typical lefty?” How could you tell if a given player “just has fun out there?” And how would you know if a pitcher “didn’t want to do that” whenever said pitcher issued a base on balls?

You are absolutely right mikefive. My father is close friends with one of the Phillies owners and he has said repeatedly how much the club loves JJ and what he brings to the fold. He has not actually said the words that they want to make JJ their full time play by play guy but you can tell in talking with him that it is certainly an idea that is being looked at and considered very heavily.

JJ (Jim Jackson) is the voice of the Flyers on TV.

Bill Clement is a former Flyer who does announcing on several stations here.

Doc Emerick is currently an NBC hockey commentator. He used to be the voice of the (puke) Devils, and he got his start being groomed to be the successor to Gene Hart (whom I still truly miss – he’s the original voice of the Flyers, and his daughter is Lauren Hart, the one who sings “God Bless America” with the recording of Kate Smith at Flyers home games).

Somebody please refresh my memory about the identity of T-Mac – I’ve been out of the States since lats August.

And Met fans couldn’t stand him, either, so you know he’s not good. Honestly, I actually like the Mets announcing staff; I consider them one of the better ones in MLB. Nats/Marlins are bottom of the freaking barrel, and now that Harry’s gone, Phils are somewhere in the middle. JJ would make them much better so long as we can rid ourselves of McCarthy. I actually don’t mind Wheels; at least he knows what pitch is being thrown and has some insight into the game.

Before I came over to England, I lived in the part of NJ that is basically a collection of bedroom communities for NYC. So, I agree about the Mets announcers – I heard them plenty for many years; they’re pretty good. (Can’t stand the Yankees announcers, though – that goes without saying, doesn’t it?)

The disadvantages of living there? I got to see all the Devils, Rangers, and Islanders games I wanted – no Flyers games (unless they played one of the aforementioned teams). I was in hockey hell. I sometimes drove back to see my Dad in Pottstown so that I could see enjoyable hockey with announcers I liked while I was visiting the folks – kind of a “win/win” situation. :)

I’ll have you know I’m very fond of my home town. Being able to see Flyers games there was an added bonus for visiting. I would have been happy to go back even without the games on TV.

Having to listen to commentary from the Devs/Rangers/Isles announcers all the time required me to detox in PA every one in a while. If my local cable system back then had piped in Pens and Caps games as well, maybe with re-broadcasts of some old Whalers games to boot, my torture would have been complete. Fortunately, I could escape NJ and return to the fine Philly suburbs to get some relief. :)

The Mets announcers and the production crew, really, it’s top-notch. Keith Hernandez is unintentionally hysterical – sometimes even offensive in a “that came out wrong” way – and the way they break down the game is phenomenal.

And I don’t mind Wheels either. He’s a cocky sombitch and prone to doldrums, but he really knows his history and half of his “I grew up watching so and so (in the 50s)” are really entertaining.

Especially since he was not the reason they lost last game, he weathered the first storm and the flyers then got a pp and failed there and went back to looking like the phantoms in front of him and hartnell took a stupid penalty.

Agreed.

He wasn’t to blame for a large majority of the goals so far.

In Latvia, they're rooting for Bartulis' team, the Filadelfijas Flaieri!

He joked that he was glad there was no Flyers game last night, or we would have all yelled until he put the game up on the screen behind him. I laughed because it’s true.

Just came across this:

Why Hawks Will Win Wednesday

Did the horrible colours on that webpage make you feel ill? Cos it made me a bit dizzy. The only statement worthwhile was his one about the line changes working.

The only reason I know Justin Bieber is because I work in a housing facility with a good number of “tween” residents.

Dude had better save his money. He is about to find out the hard way how the music industry works.
