Stanley Cup Final, Game 6 Discussion Thread: Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia Flyers
Chicago Blackhawks at Philadelphia Flyers, Jun 9, 2010 8:00 PM EDT
Tonight's goaltenders:
After the jump, full lineups, questions to answer and our in-game discussion.
Flyers Line Cominations
Gagne – Richards – Carter
Hartnell – Briere – Leino
JVR – Giroux – Asham
Laperriere – Betts – Powe
Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Coburn
Krajicek - Bartulis
We're expecting the same lineup.
Chicago Line Combinations
who the hell knows at this point, part two
Keith - Seabrook
Hjalmarsson - Campbell
Sopel - Hendry
Questions to Answer
- Can the top line start to bury their chances when it matters most?
- Will Michael Leighton rebound after being pulled from Game 5?
- Antti Niemi wasn't great in Game 5, despite the win. Can the Flyers exploit him some more?
- Does Chris Pronger dominate after a bad outing on Sunday?
- The Flyers were strong in the second and third periods of Game 5. Does that carry over?
- Another weak start for orange and black?
- Is the Stanley Cup awarded in Philadelphia tonight?
Tonight's game is on NBC in the US and CBC in Canada. Get the local call on WIP, and as always, join us here for the conversation. LET'S GO FLYERS!

i’d be drinking with you all, but i have classes this evening.

I’ve written a few tests while half in the bag. My 3rd year French Grammar was usually pretty boozy.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
I wrote an entire essay while downing beer. Mind you, it was a Science Philosophy assignment and I wanted to prove I could write an A grade essay for that paper while drunk. Success!

Drinking after exams is at least as important as studying before them.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
I showed up to a Philosophy exam buzzed…left drunk. I figured I was pretty much screwed either way, might as well try and dull the pain of the exam somehow. Got a C+ on the exam…and a C+ in the class…in retrospect I might have been able to pull a B had I not been in the state I was in…oh well…live and learn.

People often talk about artists who get stoned and paint or draw or whatever. In that state, I’ve always just wanted to sit and do nothing. I’ve always found it made me less creative and less inclined to do anything at all.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
I’ve never actually tried it, but I’ve seen my friends do it and essentially become useless.
I lived with a French student who would do it every day and he thought it made him more intelligent and added clarity to his thoughts. It actually didn’t but he said it helped.
Philosophy students in my class would get stoned between classes and just talk endlessly about logic. Drove me insane

I showed up to a c++ final drunk. At 10am. From the night before.
I hadn’t even intended to drink. But my friend roped me into doing a shot. Which led to another. And another. 10 shots in 2 hours later I was puking off the balcony. Passed out on the couch Somehow I made it to the final. I really don’t remember answering questions. But I did pass the class

For me
It was always the gaps between classes that did me in. I’d make a few friends in a given class, then in an hour or two before the next class, we’d head to one of the campus pubs for a chat over a couple pints.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
Meh
I did a double major in Visual Art and French. Art was a very small department, and so I always knew someone, not to mention that most classes were really small. French was bigger, but still had small classes.
Both disciplines, however, were about 90% female. It just wasn’t that hard to meet girls.
"Defense! Defense! Common! Do you call that blowing!?"
i often have breaks between classes. i’m usually alone though. the person i’ve seen most during these breaks though has been a very quiet old friend of mine who is always swamped in all her chemistry lab reports.

wait, the flyers were strong in the second and third periods in game 5?
offensively, maybe, but certainly not on the defensive side of play.
Eat what the monkey eats, then eat the monkey. -U.S. Navy survival guidance
Okay. A quick story.
When the flyers went down 3 games to none against Boston back during that series, I had been growing a playoff beard. I admittedly lost faith with the team when they lost that game 3, and the beard was REALLY annoying. So I shaved it. The Flyers proceeded to win 4 in a row to keep the season alive and knock off the Bruins.
My services were not required during the Montreal series, which means the last time I had shaved was right before that Boston game 4 that kicked off their winning streak.
I shaved the beard again this morning. Let’s see if this gives them the spark they need again. :)
And no, I haven’t lost faith this time. Just figuring hell, it worked before. :-P
LET’S GO FLYERS!!!
I trimmed by beard after that Game 3 loss to Boston too and strongly considered doing it again but didn’t. However, if the 1st period goes poorly I may run upstairs and trim it. Should I, or no?

I think it goes without saying but, still, not for nothing, I think we should lay down a simple code of conduct for tonight:
No one says a word about a game after this one until this one is over.

BTW
Have you seen that The Arcade Fire have been doing surprise shows all around Québec recently? “Longeuil” is a trending topic on twitter because it was just leaked that they’re playing in a parking lot somehwere there. Their new album is called “Suburbs”, so they’ve been hitting the suburbs to do these shows, I guess.

"Win today, and we walk together forever"
Yeah, let emery walk, both Leights and Boosh played as good if not better this season and Backlund looks ready if needed to be the backup.
Backlund is highly unlikely to sign without even the opportunity to be the NHL backup.
And no way do I want Leighton/Boucher/Bobrovsky as the three best goalies on the Flyers.

Like I said, it’s only based on how many other Flyers have lived there. It’s not hinted at in the article at all, other than the fact that it is in South Jersey.

I admit, I must sound like a horrific stalker at the moment (even though I haven’t even considered going near the building itself, only Geoff brought that up), but regardless here’s the line from the original article on philly.com:
It may have something to do with the sandwiches, which he makes himself now that he lives on his own in South Jersey. Since Giroux and van Riemsdyk live in the same apartment building – and often room together on road trips – Giroux has turned his 20-year-old neighbor into a fan of grilled cheese.

Falling on the puck can be delay of game (It can cause a penalty shot under that rule under the right circumstances, I think), but it sounds more like the question was whether or not that’s what really happened

It should be a penalty just like the hand pass in the defensive zone should be a penalty that is a stupid rule, your right geoff the intention of the play needs to be how you determine if its a penalty or not and that was on purpose.
So you want these horrible refs making judgments on “intent”? /shudder
Man-crushin' on Boucher since 1999
Broad Street Hockey - Makin' it look mean since 1967.
by Geoff Detweiler on Jun 9, 2010 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha, I agree with you. Although the rulebook does specifically say that if a player blocks a shot and it gets unintentionally caught under him, it is not a penalty. So they wrote the intent into the rule, which is a little scary
by DragonGirl0583 on Jun 9, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions
not always but on that its pretty obvious unless stevie wonder is the ref thats Hjalmarsson trying to get a whistle, not like the puck went in his shorts or jersey or whatever he huddled in thankfully got a stick to the face for his trouble.
So if you block a shot, the puck is underneath you, and you want to make the smart hockey play, it should be a penalty? Do you remember all the times players would trap the puck between their skates and the boards while the ref just yells to move the puck?
It’s not a penalty and it shouldn’t be a penalty, unless the player is the one who PUTS the puck there. If that guy wants to get whacked, poked, stepped on, and punched just to get a whistle, make him EARN it. Wait 2 or 3 seconds to see if the puck can be freed, but don’t penalize him just cause he sacrificed for his team.

by Geoff Detweiler on Jun 9, 2010 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions
thats not a smart hockey play if thats legal then so should shooting the puck over the glass it amounts to the same thing, a whistle and a loss of momentum to whoever had it.
But again, you’re equating a positive action (shooting the puck over the glass) with a sacrifice (blocking a shot and being on top of the puck). If the guy brings the puck under him and keeps it, yeah, that’s a penalty. But if you block a shot and it’s underneath you, why should you be forced to get rid of it, effectively granting the other team the puck and a 5-on-4 advantage.

You know that nothing you’ve earmarked as COTN contender has ever won it, to my knowledge with my time on this site anyway.

Sometimes the COTN doesn’t get rec’d though, it just happens to be extremely funny or apropos when looked at later after the game is over..

I love how Keith slashes Hartnell on the ankles and the announcers say it was “not much of a slash” and that Keith then “can’t go back after him” allowing the goal.

that was a weak call with that interference
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
i dont
think so, Pronger deserved both calls
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
The high-stick was on par with the ’Hawks interference call, IMO.
So I’d say the Flyers have gotten one bullshit PP (elbowing on Hartnell) and I can point to at least one non-call (trip of Giroux along hte boards) that it made up for. So, we should call it even. Both fans. The officiating sucks, it sucks for both teams, nothing is rigged.

haha, the elbowing call was terrible. But so was Pronger’s.
The refs have given both teams one goal. The interference was a penalty, even if it was weak.
Rigged? No. Make up calls? Yes. Another horribly officiated game? Yes.

any team that needs penalties called for play to be equalized shouldn’t be playing hockey. I heard the NBA is looking for new expansion teams

Hmm, I think I can forgive Hartnell for his whole regular season if he continues to dominate the 2nd half of the playoffs. He has been a beast in the ECF and now the SCF. Worth the wait :D
