Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • After years of LTIR hilarity, Mike Rathje is officially no longer a Philadelphia Flyer at 12 noon. Think about that if the team does nothing today and you're going to be depressed.
  • That said, the Flyers are going to make an offer to Dan Ellis. [CSN Philly]
  • It was reported in the Montreal media that Ellis wants a two-year, $4 million deal. Ellis told ESPN that he wasn't dead set on that figure, but it does seem that something in that ballpark will get something done. [@BroadStHockey]
  • Meanwhile, yesterday, Michael Leighton picked up a new deal. Whether he's the backup or the starter is yet to be seen. [BSH] [NHL.com] [The 700 Level] [CSN Philly] [Flyers]
  • Stats say it's an overpayment giving Leighton two years, $3.1 million. [Behind The Net]
  • Rod Brind'Amour retired yesterday. One of my favorite all time Flyers. [Canes Country] [The 700 Level] [Hockey or Die]
  • Eight things to expect today. [Puck Daddy]
  • A whole bunch of stuff from Anthony SanFilippo. [In The Room]
  • "I left my Fu Manchu, the handlebars, for a couple days and that was kind of fun." - Hartnell [Vancouver Sun]
  • We'll have a FA open thread beginning at 11:30 AM Eastern today.

Happy retirement, Rod! :) One of my favorite players ever.

Well, are we getting a D-man, a winger, or a goalie first? What do we think?

Brind'Amour...

Anyone who plays the game and then spends time on the exercise bike is double tough. Two SH goals on the same penalty kill… The man is a legend. Should’ve retired a Flyer, will never accept that trade…

Those two shorthanded goals on the same penatly versus the Pens is one of my favorite Flyers memories ever! :)

I like Brind’Amour as much as you do, but his trade in 2000 got us Keith Primeau. All things considered, that was worth it – you have to give in order to get…

I cant agree with you on that.
Priemeau was great, but I still feel we lost more that we gained!
I hate that we had to let Brind’Amore go

We’ll agree to disagree then. :)

Too many good Primeau memories for me to say that the trade wasn’t worth it. (One could attept to claim, since Brind’Amour won the Cup with the ‘Canes and we didn’t win with Primeau, that the trade wasn’t worth it. But, I don’t think we would have won the Cup with Brind’Amour here without many other moves of substance.)

I think we disagree by only fractions of a degree, anyway!
Priemeau wore the orange and black well and I am still a huge fan of his!
Great player, great captain, and a very good man on and off the ice.

Yeah, they were both outstanding Flyers.

In a perfect world, we would have had both and won the Cup with them. :)

I didn’t expect Brind’Amour to retire, he seemed like he was going to be the Jamie Moyer of hockey with how much he took care of himself.

I wish he could have retired as a Flyer, but he got to win the cup with Carolina and that was great for him.

That is tough I am going to say winger because they are going to have specific targets to go after, Armstrong and Cullen according to sources. D-Men are going to shop around more see who shakes down at the best price same with lots of options same for goalies.

I am really hoping for Kurtis Foster, I didn’t realize he was 6ft 5in 220lbs and a RH shot. He shot is insane and we don’t have a 2nd PP unit point man. Coburn and Carle didn’t do it for me last year on the PP.

by chrislanci on Jul 1, 2010 10:39 AM EDT reply actions

I keep seeing Cullen is going end up in Minnesota in a lot different places.

Last year we lost Knuble, but later in the summer we picked up Lappy and Betts.
Everyone else from the summer UFAs busted one way or another

this year we have money to spend and last year we were clearing space for Pronger

Brind’ Amour was one of my favorites when I was a little kid when my dad and I played my hockey game on Super Nintendo I would always choose him.

As for Ellis I read that he has the same agent as Leighton so I’m not sure he ends up here since their agent probably wants both of them in a situation where they can both start.

by The Legend on Jul 1, 2010 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

i dont think that means anything. Leighton isnt starting anywhere. He and his agent know it. His deal is done. He’s a backup here.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I am more concerned with the rising price.
Talk about Ellis is now rumored* in the 4 mil range.

Sign me up. Don’t see how you can say no to that price unless Mason wants 2 years at 2.5 per or less. I’m also assuming Nabby will get north of 3.5 easily.

by DLJr on Jul 1, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

WAIT

2 mil for 2 years a apiece are you sure

i thought it was 4 mil a year for 2 years? Christ if thats all he wants fucking do it. We can get a goalie that can with our defense can be a solid number 1. And get a 5th defenseman and get a guy like Colby.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, 2 for 2 each is a pretty solid deal, don’t know why Montreal wouldn’t sign him to that asap though.

I read Montreal’s looking for someone closer to the $1 million range because of cap concerns (probably thanks to their RFAs).

by Ben Feldman on Jul 1, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

that makes sense, but if they want someone to actually challenge Price for the starter’s job, I’m thinking they need to pay more than 1MM. I mean, Micheal Leighton just got 1.5MM per season.

Armstrong will cost twice as much as Max though. Either would be upgrades over Carcillo though. Comes down to cap room I’d assume.

Can we get Maxim Afinogenov to play wing please?

by Derek F on Jul 1, 2010 10:47 AM EDT reply actions

No, thanks

Max is a great offensive potential, but we want someone more like Colby who can play 2 way hockey and is much more physical than the under sized Afinogenov.

by brf132 on Jul 1, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I want a winger that knows how to put the puck in the net we have plenty of scrappy two way players

by Derek F on Jul 1, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

We would probably be playing whoever we pick up on the third line. We have plenty of puck moving/net finding already there with Cloud and Reemer. Colby would be a great compliment.

by brf132 on Jul 1, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Very Happy to know our lockeroom is rock solid with Leadership now.
We have out leaders, and every player is a full believer after that playoff run.
Any new pickup we get will feel that.

Teams like Pitt are about to lose a lot of leadership at the strike of 12!

Dan Ellis? Really?

That’s who we want to put our money on? If a starter is a 1, and a back up is a 2- he’s a 1.5 where Leights is a 1.7. Can you really see this guy for a good two years?

by Philly C on Jul 1, 2010 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

I’d prefer Chris Mason to Dan Ellis, but I wouldn’t be dismayed by the thought of Ellis vs Leighton in camp. Hopefully the scouts are right about Bobrovsky too.

by Derek F on Jul 1, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I like Dan Ellis. I think’s more of an upgrade than what you’re comparing him to leighton.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

and the bottom line he’s still an upgrade. If we get him at 4 mil 2 year or a little less, versus paying 5 mil for nabokov ,and we can move some other contracts and get a guy like Colby Armstrong, then I’d go with Ellis.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I like your though, save some money for that third pairing
but still, i don’t know how much of an upgrade he is

by Philly C on Jul 1, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

i think Ellis or Mason might be the best combination of cost effective/age/talent. Nabokov would still probably be my number 1 choice, but if he’s asking for 5 mil or even 4.5, and we can get Elis for 4. I think we have to go Ellis. And i think Ellis has the potential to be real solid. Especially if we play our defense in front of him.

It’s hard to compare Leighton to Ellis, when Leights had our defense in front of him.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Are Biron and Niitty really at a point in their careers where they’re willing to accept 15-20 starts at the absolute most? I think Hedberg might be the best fit for New York.

by Ben Feldman on Jul 1, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

No argument here. Moose would be a good fit. Like I said, tweets normally from him are solid, but just now…

Well I don’t know about y’all but I am giddy with anticipation. I haven’t been this excited since the summer of 2007.

If we could somehow swing the following, I would be thrilled to pieces:

Ellis
Volchenkov
Armstrong
Foster

While there are technically better options than Ellis, I would take him if it meant we could have a defense featuring Pronger, Carle, Timonen, Coburn, Volchenkov, and Foster, as well as the following forward lines:

Gags-Richie-Cartsy-Poo
Yukon Cornelius-Danny-Big Ville Style
Rabbit-Clode-Neil Armstrong
Lappy-Betts-Carbomb
Noodle Heaven, Oops Powe Surprise!, Rile E. Coyote

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Jul 1, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

Id prefer Tallinder over Foster and i dont think they’ll money for Volchenkov and Colby, Id prefer Colby

if we get Ellis, Tallinder, and Colby Ill be very happy.

I wonder if we move Carcillo, let go of Asham, and trade Boosh, if we’d have room to ship Coburn’s rights and what we’d have to pay hiim to the Rangers for the rights to Staal.
