Nay, plus why would he sign here to play on the 3rd line when he can play on Crosby’s or Malkin’s line?
they’re cutting him loose

Not surprising but Henrik Tallinder definitely going to market in 30 min, no last-minute deal with Sabres…
Flyers are expected to look into him.

Thank goodness for BSH. I’m not allowed to see the twitter feed compilation over on Puck Daddy, but I know you guys are going to bring all the updates i need. :)
Id like Nabokov, but if Dan Ellis only wants 4 mil over 2 years, then that has to be the go to option

Agreed
With Ellis, you can see Leighton getting a decent number of starts. Whichever goes on a hot streak, you play them. The odds of both going soft at the same time are minimal, especially if the Flyers upgrade at 5th D-man.
The only things I’d say are that Armstrong better not want more money than his current salary, and that Michalek may be a better pairing for Bartulis (unless they’re looking for someone to play with Timonen and Cobie moves to 5th D).

Marc Staal for Coburn?
Any thoughts on this. Coburn wants Staal money, but he isnt worth it and the flyers hopefully wont give it to him.
But oddly the Rangers dont feel Staal is worth it. A little swap of rights eh?
If we move Carcillo, let go of Asham, and move Boosh, and get Ellis for only 2 mil or so.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:41 AM EDT reply actions
i mean here’s the thing. If the flyers are faced with losing Coburn b/c they dont want to overspend and the rangers are faced with losing Staal.
Despite the interdivsion, it’s a feasible great option for both teams. Staal would be money here. And Coburn is still a solid player. If Staal were to walk and the rangers fans get nothing, they might be more pissed about that. Staal would be a flyer, but at least they have a good defenseman with great potential in Coburn.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Coburn will go a bit cheaper than Staal, so the rangers would probably be willing to spend that, at that point especially if they were unable to keep Staal. And Coburn isnt a bad consolation prize.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, they told Asham they’re not re-signing him. He said he was told the Flyers wanted to keep him but they weren’t sure it would work under the salary cap. Asham said he wanted to say, but he understands, no hard feelings, etc.
They need a more offensive guy on that 3rd line Asham can’t keep up we Giroux and JVR or if I had my way Carter and JVR.
There was a time when your 3rd line was your checkers and grinders … And I hope you mean moving van Riemsdyk up and not Carter down. He is not a #3 center on any team.
But ...
The advantage of moving Carter to the “third” line actually means that the “top” line would be Hartnell-Briere-Leino, the “second” line would be JVR-Carter-Giroux, and the “third” line would be Gagne-Richards-Carcillo/FA. Seems like a familiar scenario … oh right – the Penguins!!! And in fact, I think it woudl be a huge boon to roll three fully capable lines like that (I was arguing for it last season already, when no one knew if Giroux would be a real threat).

Today should be interesting. After the Leighton signing, I wonder whether we sign a Turco/Nabokov type. Leighton deserves to be the starter. He could have easily left and been the surefire starter in Columbus, Atlanta or a number of other places. Seems unfair to relegate him to backup after all he did last season. Unfortunately (maybe?), this means we would likely not sign a Nabokov, who I hardly think would sign to be a veteran backup to Leighton. Thoughts? Does the Leighton signing mean no goalie today? Or does Leighton go back to backup status (undeservedly?)?
Evan Turner = Future NBA MVP
Leighton does not deserve to be the starter. He did well, but this isnt a charity case. We need a better goalie. Our defense made him look better than what he is.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions
why didnt he leave then? to a place where he KNEW he’d start? Why take the chance at being a backup again? Does he love us that much?

I don’t think they are giving up on Steve Mason yet there. And in ATL, I think they think Pavelec is worth taking a longer look at.
by SteelBirdFlyer on Jul 1, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions
agreed. you put Leighton on a team without Timmonen and Pronger, and he’s no starter.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions
I guess I give him too much credit for last season. If we bring in a solid other goalie, I don’t mind Leights as the backup (actually that is great depth). I just feel he will be a bit shafted just sitting all the time.
Evan Turner = Future NBA MVP
by chillicothe20 on Jul 1, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions
if he is good enough, he will play. if he isn’t, then he will be a back-up. it’s up to him, so how is that shafted? you can’t award him because he did alright last year…
he was a great starter last season, and had he not been hurt, we might have been a much higher seed (4/5) in the playoffs. In the end, our being the 7 was better, but we didnt foresee that.

the same way i have flashbacks of Biron giving the puck up to Crosby on the door step
i just cant get by Leighton letting Kane score that extra soft goal to win the cup. And i dont think the flyers players will either. Its an image that given the magnitude of the situation you dont forget. I think the flyers know this. Leighton has earned being a backup here. Thats it. If he doesnt give up those softees in game 6, it might be a different story. But in that big of a game you have to stop those pucks, doesnt matter what you’ve done before.
i get that you feel bad for him, but you have to take the emotion out of it.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Leighton would have to go to a team with great defense to be a starter… like say the Flyers.
But hopefully a better guy like Ellis, will be even better with our defense in front of him.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think Leighton is the guaranteed starter at all, I think he will expect to have to earn the job in camp whether it is vs a FA they bring in or people they already have in the organization.
he’ll have a chance, but he’ll have to be amazing to take it from whoever the FLyers are signing to be the perceived starter. I mean if you sign another goalie as your starter and he isnt, that looks pretty bad, so Leights will have to be amazing in training camp.
Maybe it will force him to work on giving up those softees.

2) Does this mean Coburn won’t be signed?

going just from Coburn to Meszaros is not enough. even with an upgrade at goalie.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions
1) I’d actually pair him with Timonen. Meszaros has occasional moments of Utter Stupid, and Timmo’s the best one to cover for that.
2) I hope not
3) At his current level of play, probably, but if he keeps developing, it’ll be a steal.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Better or worse than Hamhuis? I wasn’t too high on Danny Boy; it sounds like Tampa people are echoing that sentiment with Meszaros.
Different? I’d probably consider Hamhuis a little better, but Meszaros is three years younger, so it may be polish moreso than talent.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Yeah, I think Hamhuis is probably a little more solid defensively, Meszaros might have more offensive upside? But I get most of my info about players that are not Flyers from playing fantasy hockey, so take that for what it’s worth. (little to nothing :P)

That’s my worry – unless Meszaros plays with Timonen, he goes have some serious gaffes that will completely expose him on the third pairing.

In the beginning of the playoffs, it was true. But as the playoffs kept going, he got better it seemed. Stanley Cup finals, especially game 4 I believe, he was possibly the best player on the ice. I just don’t like giving up on a relatively young player who is already established here and playing pretty well for a player who is just as young but dont really know much about. At least the guy is signed though. He better be pretty good for a cap hit of $4 mil a yr.

Well the reality is we are not getting a stud goalie so at least we have improved our D.

5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Going into today, the choices looked like Dan Ellis, cheap 3rd pair, and maneuverability at the deadline/next summer vs. Leighton, a (slightly?) improved third pairing, and officially declaring war on the salary cap.
Of course we choose the latter.
Going into today
Wait for it.

I think you got it just right.
If these are our D-men (and at these prices), then one has to assume we’re not getting a goalie. I think, like it or not, it’s Leights/Boosh (most likely) for the start of the 2010-11 season.

How? We saw Coburn as a number 5 last year, and scouting indications are that Meszaros is guy that takes risks and makes giveaways. We’re still a team with a third pairing that will gift you a goal a game.

Somebody is getting shipped out in a salary move…
Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook
If we have around 2 mil left for powe, carcillo, and potential UFA goalie we’d presumably be shedding boucher’s contract
well they won’t be buying him out if they do … I don’t think they have room to buy out even bouchers contract at this point …
his salary (925,000) divided over double the remainder of his contract (1 Year).
So it would cost them a little under 500k to buy him out … which still is a lot of money when you consider what they still have to do with what little space they have. So basically it would be a trade if they are going to move him.
I think they let Powe walk or sign him to a two way deal, Carcillo and a get a winger. Screw goalie at this point we spend too much money on D.
I’d much rather see Powe offered a two-year deal at about $700,000, Carcillo tendered RFA qualifier (I believe already done), and Cote traded to somewhere for a prosepct or pick.

Carter can center the second line with JVR and Giroux as his wingers, and Richards centers the third line with Gags and Carbomb, but gets more minutes than a typical (read: not the Pens) third line. Yes, because it’s based on the difference between what you’re paying him and what you would have paid him. Hartnell’s salary goes from $4.2 to $3.7 to $3.2 over the next three years, so the amount of money you save is less each year. The hit after his contract would have ended is just the amount you’re paying that year.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I’d rather spend too much today on players and figure out how to fit them under the cap later than just sit on my hands today and watch all of my options disappear.
Homer’s just started. Everyone should wait until the dust settles before you judge his efforts.

Because if you add more people bidding in theory his price would go up, plus there would still be no guarantee that you would get him. With a trade you are sure to get the guy. Also you only have Meszaros for 2 (maybe 3) more years instead of 5.

by HockeyOutsiders on Jul 1, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions
well basically there's your answer
Defensemen were going expensive. So they were all getting overpaid. Homer probably went and get Meszos for 4 mil for a long team deal just because of that. He didnt want to get in a bidding war with other teams over defensemen and then REALLY overpay or come away with nothing.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
truth is..
if Coburn would ever get back on track to hitting his potential, then 3.2 mil a year might be cheap for him. a couple years ago Coburn seemed like a potential frachise defenseman for life here.

I do remember reading Lappy-esque story about him getting hit in the face, getting stitched up and coming back for the next period. Toughness is always a plus. Also, even though the price seems steep, I think everyone here is too down on this guy because we know very little and he had been playing in Tampa. I think he was decent in OTT, and then TB brought him in to be a #1, thus the high salary, and he just wasn’t that. He’s probably a #3, so if we’re playing him at #4 or #5, I think that sounds excellent.
Again, I don’t know much about non-Flyers, but I had him on a fantasy team last year, so I read a few articles about him. What you want to take out of that kind of knowledge is your choice, but I’m hoping it’s one of those poor fit on a poor team kind of things and he’ll have less pressure here and will end up being a good pickup.

The Flyers have to make a move somewhere. I am told they are still talking to Ellis’ camp …
yep. I think i am going to laugh when I see what crappy salaries that nabby and turco have to take. they should have signed with the flyers now they are likely stuck in hockey hell

Some jersey scouting:
I assume Meszaros bumps Nodl from 14, but Coburn keeps the 6. O’Donnell would look nice in 2.
Wow, I fucked this all up. So, O’Donnell is fine, but Meszaros has to switch?
Travis, I think we found someone you can beat at the Numbers game….
hahaha.

SHOCKER!!!
@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Phoenix Coyotes close to re-signing Derek Morris am told…
i just saw that so apparently no one wants to touch turco and nabby. those guys really overestimated the deals they’d get on the market

Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2010-11 Philadelphia Flyers
Assuming O’Donnell is signed, as is Powe and Carcillo for about their last year’s salaries, “you see what you get” according to Capgeek, with only $200 K left. Any other major moves require trades. Note that Nodl is not included, and we are 1 below the maximum active roster.
FORWARDS

Two of the best nights of my life.,,,October 21, 1980 and October 29, 2008.
One of the weirdest...October 1, 1970. I kept part of one of the seats.
I was in college in Boston in 1974 and when Clarke scored the OT goal in game 2 I knew that the Flyers would win the Cup since they would never lose at home.
I don’t think they can rescind Powe’s offer sheet, so I would expect him there and (finally) waive Cote

Agreed. This might allow for Nodl or someone else. But again, no other “major” moves without trades.

They can rescind an qualifying offer and the player becomes a UFA. And Cote would just be buried in the minors if anything
I just thought they would have had to do it already, I didn’t think they could do it with this timing since RFA’s aren’t even allowed to accept them until July 1st

Note: This assumes Backlund or Boosh as backup with other in AHL
With all 3 up this equals 23, but exceeds the cap. Their salaries are close.

Powe and carcillo get an automatic 10% increase in their RFA offers I think. That leaves the Flyers with about enough money to buy a hot dog. A cheap one at that.

How many teams are left looking for starting goaltending? The Flyers are by far the most attractive option at this point.

atlanta and tampa. both supposedly interested in mason and ellis. nabby and turco really seemed like they screwed themselves by not taking w/e flyers offered.

perhaps but i’ve read they are content with varly and neuvirth while concentrating on second line center but with this market they can probably pull it off.

if Ellis does go to TB that basically means that only Atlanta and hopefully the Flyers are left looking for starters. San Jose going for niitty really throws the market in the flyers favor but they need to clear cap room.

TSN defends paying 3 million per year for Colby Armstrong, Hartnell’s contract looks good in comparison. If a USA teams signed him at the number they would be complaining about how much he got overpaid.
Yeah, I’m gonna change it shortly.

The Non-Perfect Market World Now Takes Hold
I’ve been saying that Ellis would be overpaid (as was Leighton) because he is the (unfairly) fair-haired child in this environment. We now will see.
Note: this is why Biron signed cheap. He has been through the non-perfect market before.

From Sharks GM Doug Wilson via text message regarding Niitty: ``He is the guy we wanted." so that means that Tampa and San Jose are done on the goalie front. Only Atlanta and hopefully Philly left

Biggest shocker so far? Malhotra for 3/7.5, Biron being the first goalie to go, or Rathje still on the board 2 hours into FA … DEBATE!
