Okay, so let’s think about this. Shelley signing at $1.1 million probably means Carcillo was asking for a good bit over that, right?
That’s what I’m thinking (hoping?).

How about instead we give up this new Shelley thug we just signed. :P
Sign and trade, like they do in the NBA all the time.

well
in the NBA they sign a player already on their team to a contract and then trade, rather than sign an FA and then trade them.
I know, I know. I was just trying to lighten the mood. :)

It already happened we added two 6ft 2 plus 220 lb plus D-Men and 6ft 3in 230 lb in Shelly that is big.
I am confused about this.
I think the comment above about Clark getting on the phone would explain it – but otherwise I’m just as confused.
This doesn’t leave enough money to keep Powe and Carcillo, I don’t think. And taking Shelley over Carcillo is just DUMB. Carcillo can at least score once a month, rather than Shelley scoring once a season or so.

what an awful day
between the utley news and now this, today has been an outright failure. Has Bob Clarke retaken the GM role or something? These moves seem absolutely terrible. WE NEED A GOALIE. Does anyone in the Flyers organization know this? 7.2 mill for Coburn and Mez? Seems ludicrous to me. And Jody Shelley? forreal? ugh. and now people are saying we could have had ellis for less than 2 mill per? this just gets worse and worse
seriously. that 7.2 mil is ridiculous. the market is so good to get an upgrade in goal and homer failed

Ladies and Gentlemen, your 2010-11 Philadelphia Flyers, sort of ($6000.00 left)
Note that Carcillo has to go in this scenario. Signing Shelley is bizarre IMO. But I thought that last capgeek roster I posted was “stable”. This one isn’t. Something else has to happen.

Travis, correct. Here, Without Cote or Carcillo
Note that we are at 21 skaters here, not much more room in either cap hit or total active roster numbers (only one over minimum). . And no, we can’t replace Boosh with Backlund since the cap hit difference will be higher in that scenario.
Again, this is an unstable roster I think.

this is a great point. There was four quality ufa goalies available-nabokov, turco, ellis, mason-and only 2-3 teams looking for a goalie. the market was perfect to FINALLY bring a quality goalie to this franchise. instead they stick with 10 foot 5-hole Leighton. For christ sake i would have rather brought back biron. and im dead serious when i say that
why is today so bad?
we now have a beast defense. Ok so Shelley isnt as fun as Carcillo, but he (obviously) is gonna cost a lot less. we can put a mite on ice in net and still shut down teams.

Not every team is spent to the cap quite like us. We’re not uniquely screwed in case of injury, but we certainly never give ourselves flexibility.
Take the star of any team and it’s big trouble is what I should have said. Also, if your big guy ($ and talent) goes down you get cap room, don’t you?

You’re not a real sports fan until you’re a total cynic. Me I am not worried until there’s something to worry about. I like the moves the Flyers made. That could have done some things differently but it looks like they generally improved the team. Obviously though I can understand that the people who hate on Leighton are unhappy…

Listen, you won’t find a bigger Chico fan on here then me, but… As good as he was, he was always “the little guy”. Size of the fight in the dog is something little people say to make themselves feel better. There’s a reason we didn’t fight at all in the damn playoffs.
We’ve now got the #1 Defense in the league, along with the Stanley Cup Playoffs best goalie, and added a brawler to the team as well.
What’s the crying about?
by BroadStreetBully on Jul 1, 2010 2:38 PM EDT reply actions
Problem is to my mind we added a brawler at the expense (at very least) of signing Carcillo, who can sort-of fight and sort-of score – far more valuable in my mind than another Cote clone!
The defense, OK I see it – although I would have preferred less tied up in cap space there. Signing Leighton, I feel I am in the minority on but definitely feel it was a good move by Homer. Whether he splits time with another 1A like Mason/Ellis (although I hear Ellis is out) or plays as a starter, I’m ok with it.
by MaximumTalbot on Jul 1, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions
To be fair, Cote’s record was around 8 wins, 53 losses. Shelly’s a damn sight better.
by BroadStreetBully on Jul 1, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions
True – but he’s still one-dimensional. How about Lappy, who can kill penalties AND fight? Why do we need a brawler – we already have one of the chippiest lineups in the league!

I am shocked we good Leighton at what everyone said Leighton should get. We got Coburn at what everyone thought he should get. We added a young stud and a vet to sure up the 3rd Pairing.
Meszaros and O’Donnell is so much better like sooooo much better than Bartulis/Parent/Krajeick.

by historywillbemade on Jul 1, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Coburn at that salary for a longer term, yes. Otherwise its too much. Leighton, yes – actually happy with that. Meszaros, if he regains his Ottawa form, great. If he has continued misteaks like Tampa, NOPE. ANd I do think Bartulis is ready for NHL minutes.
My biggest issue here is the Shelley signing. I just don’t get it.

I think that is most people’s problem. Everyone was okay with what was going on before, (maybe a little worried about how much cap space was going to defense, but still okay with everything) then we get word of the Shelley signing and it’s “ALL THE MOVES ARE HORRIBLE!”
I don’t like this Shelley nonsense either, but I hardly think it’s “The worst day evar!!!!” as some people have posted.

Soooo the Flyers could’ve not traded for Mezaros and NOT signed Shelley and could’ve afforded Martin????
A UFA free agent with a big ticket was not going to sign here to play on the 5th pair. MONEY was not the issue. Unlike other sports NHL is not all about the money it is role on the team.

I don’t mind the overspending on D. Everyone is overspending on D. To keep up with the Jones’, you gotta spend that money. And they didn’t COMPLETELY overspend. And they made the D a lot better in my opinion. I don’t care much for the Shelley signing, but have no prob. with Coburn, Meszaros & O’Donnell. Excited about it actually. Just wish they saved some on Ellis or Nabby, or even Mason. Cause like someone said, for G, it is a buyers market. Still time though. Keep those fingers crossed.

To be honest with you, the signing of Shelley is really the only move that bugs me.
I resingned myself to the fact that Leighton was going to be brought back as I was watching him between the pipes during the SCF. Fortunately we upgraded on D…even if we did spend a tad too much.
All in all it’s not as doom and gloom as some are making it out to be.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

What is the $$ amount on Ellis deal?
I’ve seen $1.5, I’ve seen 900K. If $1.5, then Leighton is a “minor” blunder, with Leighton getting a “bonus” for earlier performance (kinda like Jamie Moyer’s 2nd year in the contract signed in 2008). BUT if $900K then Leighton signing is a major blunder.

also
all these deals are for two years or less. which, in reality, is when JVR is a free agent and is due his raise. So say Caret stays at 5 mill, Giroux get up to 3.5 mill, JVR gets 3 mill. Then we have a goalie prospect in, Marshall and MAB are ready for full time. and our only real lose will be Gagne (or hartnell or Briere, if we trade) and we can still fit under the cap. all these move are just a way to stay competitive for long and short term. Teams like Chicago blow the load for 1 season, then have to dump everybody, and some teams, like ATL, are stuck in rebuilding mode year in and year out. All this day tells me is that We are one of the few teams that will have a good 7 year window ahead of us.

Worse than last year?
I don’t understand where that thought comes from.
Trading Emery, Krajicek, Parent, Asham, Carcillo, and a 2nd round pick for Meszaros, O’Donnell, Shelley and a 3rd round pick?
Getting a very high quality third pairing in return for beloved-but-replaceable bottom-6 forwards? It might not be what you had in mind — it’s not what I had been looking for — but this is a very clear improvement to the roster.
Someone get Clark out of the war room!!!
Did anyone see the Flyers get pushed around last season? No? Then someone please explain why we’ve added such ENORMOUS players – all above 6-2 and 220. And particularly why we needed a ‘top-flight’ brawler? Can’t Lappy, Carcillo, et all fight enough? Does the second-most penalized team in the league need a pure fighter under a contract that damn near dictates he gets minutes and not press-box time?
I got it belatedly – the moment was gone though. :-/

Coffey was one of the best Dman of his era. Especially a guy who could anchor your PP unit. And Oates was 1000 yrs old when he came here. But he is also a HOF. THe rest, yeah, busts. Maybe not Cechmanek. I don’t like him, but he wasn’t a bust really.
This is relative to contract and what we gave up for them. We bail on Ouellet before he could be considered a true stinker.

I wanted an upgrade in goal, too, but let’s not get too carried away about passing up perennial playoff chokers Nabakov and Turco and unproven Dan Ellis. It might have been a “buyers” market for goalies this year, but still, by no means was the free agent class all that good or deep.

I understand ya, but let’s not get carried away and assume that Leighton is better than any of those options.
In no way do I think he is, but a lot of people seem to be reacting as if any of the free agents would have been our savior, and I just don’t think signing one of them would have made that much difference. Nabby lets in soft goals at bad times, too, you know.

I was in college in Boston in 1974 and when Clarke scored the OT goal in game 2 I knew that the Flyers would win the Cup since they would never lose at home.
Understood. But if Tallider>Meszaros, not only did he pay more, he gave up a draft choice.
Although I wonder if they could not get other options since Meszaros might be 3rd D-line (and Tallider/other FAs would have had to be willing to be that; Meszaros in this scenario has no choice).

Soooo
Does the fact that Turco and Nabakov are going to be playing for peanuts next year somehow lessen what we would have to pay for Vokoun if we traded for him?
I know Vokoun is likely better than both of them but this has to set some sort of low watermark in the goalie commodity market, right?
to me it seems like Nabby is likely headed for KHL now

yeah but
not as much to pay for your #4 guy / for 18-20 minutes per game
yeah, but you got to think, just because he is our 4 or 5 guy doesn’t make him a 4 or 5 guy. He is probably a good 2-3, but on our stellar defense, he gets pushed back. So to get a guy of that caliber, and play him a little less than he normally would, you have to overpay. Otherwise, who wants to take a lesser role for lesser money when you know that the person is capable of more.

yes, but still. as edbro said, people are still helping them. THey are getting even younger, more prospects and picks. Agreed, let them sweat it out. Let them hang on to players until they walk. Don;‘t help them by taking players they can’t afford to resign off their hands and giving them more cheap, fairly good players, or giving them a handful of draft picks.
They are definitely helping them with the cap, but Chicago is definitely going to be very different next year

That’s how a salary dump trade works. The teams can’t send any real salary back to Chicago, it would defeat the purpose of the trade. And it’s not like Chicago is just trading away scrubs. They’re getting rid of legitimately good players. Why would the other teams wait? So a different team can swoop in and take the players that Chicago was originally offering to them?

With regard to Shelley, I’m not 100% sure one way or the other yet. Need to give it some time to play out. It’s still a bit hard to get real reactions from the Rangers side of things, but from what I understand (from what Jonesy was saying on TSN), he could be really effective on a checking line. In other words, he’s probably a cheaper alternative to Carcillo and the Flyers will have that fourth line setup again, but won’t get as much production from it.
I agree we need to let it play out, but right now, I look at it as giving a 600k+ raise to Cote.

personally, I’d take mike5 as GM of the flyers right now. Homer really seems to have jumped the gun on more than a few occassions today.
starting with the Leighton signing? was that necessary yesterday, when the market for UFA BACKUP goalies hadn’t been established yet?
Did he really need to trade for Meszaros today, could that deal not have waited a few days to let them possibly use that 4MM to sign a better D man? (Volchenkov/Mickalek anyone?)
Did we really need to upgrade Cote today?
I’m fine with Coburn/O’Donnell signing, but seems to me that’s all that really needed to get done.

And what exactly makes Pekka Rinne “VERY good”? Is it his .911 save percentage and 2.53 goals against average from last season? Numbers that are more Marty Biron (circa 2007 and 2008) than Marty Brodeur.

Excellent choice for New Jersey. A backup they can really trust to take some of Brodeur’s starts.
Sadly, he’s arguably one of the most successful goalie the Flyers have drafted in the past 20 years

Someone brought up earlier that O’Donnell was in Anaheim with Prongs, apparently they were closer that I expected. Panotch’s article has been updated with player reaction…
Pronger was pivotal in O’Donnell coming here.
"We’ve been friends for a long time, and he can be very persuasive," O’Donnell said. "He thought it would be a good fit. I’m at a point in my career where the dollars are what they are.
"It was just a matter of finding a spot where I could fit in on that bottom pair and really make a contribution. Prongs did put some calls out and we spoke a couple times. Him and I are friends, but it came down to where I felt the best fit was and where I thought I would help a team win a Stanley Cup, and Philly was on a very, very short list."
Homer seems to have a pattern of finding some good-for-the-money folks (Betts, LaPerriere, now O’Donnell), Maybe we’ll be surprised at Shelly. Or maybe we should get Homer a calculator for Christmas.

Right. I’m not 100% convinced Shelley’s a mistake. Overpaid I don’t doubt, but useless I’m not sure. From the little bit I’ve actually heard about his game between Jonesy on TSN and some comments on Blueshirt Banter, he may turn out to be pretty effective on that fourth line. Carcillo without the production, but also without the attitude, perhaps? Also might be a bit cheaper than what Carcillo wants.

We are mixed right now. Me, I love the D moves. Wish they didn’t spend 3 mil on Shelley, and maybe took advantage of this goalie market right now. Real bargains were to be had. And still some quality wingers still out there they could have had. And no one seems to have a consistent opinion on Meszaros. I read one place that loves him for being big & physical, other places say he is awful and he cannot skate. Who is to believe?
If we move a player for salary and dont get completely hosed.

Depends on who is traded.
If Briere waives his NTC and we find a team, say the Islanders, yes we can get a winger, a prospect and a ton of free space for a goalie
Gags, not as much Hartnell, even less, but yes we could grab Nabby and have some breathing room
They all have NTCs

Bud you think losing Asham, Powe and Carcillo makes the lines on this team really stink those 31 goals for that trio really make a difference.
No. I am referring to the fact that we have at least 5 centers. We needed to find complements for Giroux. That is not Shelley. I doubt it is Powe. I am perfectly fine with a line of Betts Lappy and Powe (or Shelly), plus the Briere/Leino/Hartnell line. But we need to fix the Giroux line, and either tell Carter “you are a wing, except maybe on faceoffs” or trade him, or some other trade resolution. Trading Gagne (shudder) does not fix this.
RIght now we are facing a possibility of Carter/Gagne/Richards (which, while there was injury, did not exactly click in the playoffs) and Giroux/JVR/Powe or Shelly.

I was in college in Boston in 1974 and when Clarke scored the OT goal in game 2 I knew that the Flyers would win the Cup since they would never lose at home.
Ah, thank goodne$$
So, when do we go back to the original one where Leighton and Shelley are not signed?

Ek says we're not done...
Says that a big trade is coming with a Flyer forward. I’m so sick of this day. I just wish it were over and that we didn’t pay so much for Leights.
In Latvia, they're rooting for Bartulis' team, the Filadelfijas Flaieri!
If he is remotely right I hope it lands us a goalie and a slightly less skilled forward in return.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
And who exactly would we trade for? The goalie market is messed up now. Every goalie is now worth less than his contract.
This is exactly like the 2009 housing market.

Let’s not overreact. There’s no point. I don’t know why Shelley was signed to such a contract, but Rangers fans and New York media alike (as well as San Jose) won’t stop saying how much they liked him, how valuable he was to their team, etc. Trust me, I don’t get it either. But give the man the benefit of the doubt; he appears to be universally well-liked. As for Homer’s other moves, yes, Meszaros looks to be overpaid but there’s clearly something they like in him. You can’t say “why didn’t the Flyers sign Michalek for 5 years, $20 million” or whatever because you don’t know how the Flyers being involved would have affected the bidding of other teams, and ultimately the final signing price. You also don’t know if Michalek or Tallinder or Volchenkov would be willing to accept the type of role the Flyers are offering (we all thought Hamhuis would be fine with what the Flyers were going to offer in terms of ice time — it’s obvious that wasn’t the case). As for O’Donnell, Pronger trusts in his skill and ability enough to actively recruit him, and that’s the best endorsement you can get. For some reliability on the third pairing and a great guy and great locker room presence, $1 million seems a reasonable price. Coburn’s extension at a $3.2 million cap hit is a bit higher than most of us expected — I think we were all assuming something just under three million with three million being the highest. When you look at some of the contracts handed out today to free agent defensemen, does $3.2 million seem to be that much of an overpayment? I don’t know. But let’s not automatically assume Homer is a complete failure or screwed up the team. The Flyers are not done making roster moves for October 7. Give things a few days to settle down before making final conclusions.

I’m sure Gagne’s name is brought up all the time. So is Carter’s. And Giroux’s. Doesn’t mean those conversations ever go that far.
I really hope that Carter does well at the wing. He could be amazing on the wing, if he worked at it.
by historywillbemade on Jul 1, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions
if he doesn’t pull a Bobby Abreu. He can’t play there for a little then want to go back to C. he has to commit to playing the RW. But he could be a hell of a winger. If he wants to.
I say Lappy sits him down and says “look here kid I take pucks to the face for this team. what are you going to do for us?”
by historywillbemade on Jul 1, 2010 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t mind the O’Donnell move at all. And it is just surprising that Coburn cost so much, but it needed to be done regardless. Shelley is very confusing, what will his role be and why does he cost so much? If Meszaros can get back to his Senators form, then I think that is a fairly good trade too. He had 39,35 and 36 points with the Sens, but regressed a lot going to Tampa. His hit is a bit over the top but he is only 24 so has a chance to improve.
For me, the worst part is not the actual signings, but not signing a legit RW for Giroux and a goalie. And pushing right up to the cap

I think Carcillo’s just been replaced. You don’t sign a guy for $1.1 million per for three years to be Riley Cote. My guess is that means Carcillo was asking for more than $1.1 per year and the Flyers weren’t willing to give him that much. Nothing on Powe, but the beat writers say he’s not asking for anything too much and suggest it’ll be worked out.
Powe on the 3rd line with Giroux and JVR isnt the worst thing.

I strongly disagree. Putting G on a line with JvR is one thing but putting G with Powe is a complete waste of Giroux’s creativity. I don’t even think JvR is worthy of being on a line with Giroux honestly.

no apology needed. I understand the frustration of today. Especially if we do end up trading a real great player and good person like Simon. He is one of the leaders on this team, and not only that, but one of the best players on this team. He has worked REALLY hard to become the player he is today. The issue I see with moving Gagne (other than emotional problem) is that it screws up the lines even more. The Flyers have always said they want three scoring lines. Well, assuming they don’t get a top-line forward back if they were to move Gagne, they would have four top-3 line centers (Richards, Carter, Briere, Gagne), one real right winger (Leino) and two real left wingers (Hartnell, JVR).

agreed and there’s no guarantee we win the cup. it’s all so dicey now until it gets settle and we know who is getting traded (gags or carter), where to (hopefully not the east), how much we get back in return (picks, a goalie, winger), how much cap space we have left, and what we do with that cap space (add wingers, Nabby)

you guys need to calm down about him.
In the age of the salary cap there is no such thing as a lifer any more. The stars wont even bring back MOdano at this point.
For a good bit of this and last season Gagne was a ghost.
Carter is younger and scores more than Gagne, and his ceiling is way higher, Carter is still at the beginning of his career, Gags not so much.
I think Gagne should have retried as a Flyer as well, but not in the day and age of the salary cap.
That said if we dont get a goalie and a winger for the space Gagne creates. I wont agree with the move at all.

Carter might be producing goals, but Gagne brings MUCH more to this team than Carter could ever achieve via his points on the scoresheet.

i think the playoffs proved that carter is no longer a fit for this team. we have four centers. we got that far without carter being a real contributer. gags on the other hand was a key player throughout. plus his price tag will go down in a year. carters will probably go up. gagnes the one to keep on the team – for the sake of winning a stanley cup, and for emotional reasons. plus we can get a better trade for carter than we can for gags
"Win today, and we walk together forever"
and if Carter is 100 percent healthy and had time to prepare to be a wing
maybe he scores 5 or 6 goals int eh finals, and we have more than one line the blackhawks have to worry about shutting down, and we win the cup.
cant coutn Carter out b/c we made the run without him. maybe we win it all with him if he was healthy.
you dont know. cant just sack the guy b/c of one posteason run. especially with his scoring ability, potential and youth.

agreed. It’s sad but true. I just hope that if it happens that 3 things also happen:
1. Carter adapts to wing well and returns to 09 form
2. We get a goalie either through the trade or with freed cap space
3. We get a decent scoring wing to replace gagne

I doubt we can afford to re sign either next year.

But… Gags. My God.
We Philly fans certainly know a thing or two about being hard on our star players. And as far as I know, I haven’t lived in a cave since 1999. That said, I cannot ever remember Gagne getting ANY vitriol directed his way, as was directed at people like McNabb, the pre-2007 Phillies, etc. I just didn’t see or hear it.
Please don’t say “Au revoir,” Simon.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Somehow I don’t think we’ll be seeing that goalie we all want. The following blockquote is a series of 3 tweets from Panotch.
Holmgen on his goalies: "We’re comfortable. Does that mean we won’t look around, keep our ear to the ground and see if there’s something there than makes us better? We’re certainly continue to do that. If the season started tomorrow, I’d certainly feel comfortable with our goaltending setup right now."That scares me.

Call me irrational, but I would be happy to trade Gagne IF we can get a good deal and land Ryan/Afinoganov and a goalie better than Leighton.
I’ll miss him and will be sad to see him go, but looking to the future, that would be the best move if Homer is dead set on keeping Carter.

Does the Flyers GM of today seem like a guy who could wangle a good deal?

He did improve the defense (even if the prices were a tad on the high side……)
But offensively speaking, yeah, you have a point. If it is the guy who traded OKT for Ville Leino, then I am fine, if it is the guy who thought signing Jody Shelley was a good idea, I am petrified that we are going to trade Gagne and somehow end up with Colton Orr and Vesa Toskala.

As much as irrational I may sound I wouln’t be able to accept Gagne’s trade. Ever. Even if we got Ovechkin, Crosby, Kovalchuk, Vokoun, Luongo, Brodeur, Stamkos, Ryan … Well I guess you get that hint. I will never be the same person as I was if Gagne gets traded. Yes, silly… but 100% true.

because Carter is younger and scores more and he still is not playing to his potential so he could and should get better as a player. Gagne is on the back end of his career.

But a lot of NTC have weird terms, so I don’t know if Simon’s has any conditions (like he supplies the team with a list of 5 places he will go, or something similar) or if it’s a full NTC.
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 1, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Capgeek just lists it as a NTC. They are generally pretty good at the details.
For example, Dan Boyle: NTC (full NTC until June 30, 2012; beyond that, can pick eight teams he will not accept a trade to)
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
I saw that Gagne’s contract was listed with a NTC and figured it was just a generic thing that Capgeek just slapped onto it for anyone with any type of NTC. Maybe it is a full NTC after all.
I used to think it was that way, but I saw an article 2 weeks or so ago (that I’m having trouble finding) about the top 10 weirdest NTC/NMC clauses, and that made me not be quite so sure
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 1, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay, Capgeek does have the conditions listed for the weird ones on that list I saw, but they might not have that kind of info on older contracts. So we just hope, I guess.

Carter’s an excellent player and you hate to have to trade a player like that … but this is a situation where you have to look into trading a player like that! Unless you’re trading Mike Richards or Claude Giroux (or can find a way to trade Danny Briere), there’s simply no reasonable place for him on this lineup, plus you’re in need of cap space. So naturally you start shopping around a left winger? It just doesn’t make any sense.
Two points
1) Can we have a new discussion thread?
2) A LOT of people here are FAILING to understand the ABSOLUTE MADNESS it will be to trade SIMON GAGNE to clear CAP SPACE and then SIGN FREE AGENTS.
BECAUSE WE HAD CAP SPACE YESTERDAY BUT THEN WE TRADED FOR A 4 MILLION DOLLAR 5TH DEFENDER. IF YOU WANTED NABOKOV AND AFINOGENOV, USE THE JODY SHELLEY AND 5TH DEFENDER MONEY, NOT THE 1ST LINE WINGER MONEY. IF GAGNE IS TRADED IT WOULD BE THE WORST JULY 1 SERIES OF MOVES IN HISTORY.
People are saying, I would be happy if we got Nabokov and Afinogenov for Gagne. How the hell does that make sense? Nabokov and Afinogenov are free agents! We could’ve signed them anyway if we had simply not acquired Mez. If Holmgren goes out and signs us to the brink of the cap and then trades our top winger, and a guy who’s put his heart and soul into the Flyers for 11 years, in a “i need cap space for the goalie”….
….

A big failing of the Flyers last year as a whole, especially in the playoffs, was the Flyers 3rd defensive pairing. They may have overpaid them, but at least they have the players they need to prevent the necessity of playing their top guys 30 minutes a game. The Flyers defense has improved immensely today.
Jody Shelley is still a mystery.
Gagne is on the downside of his career. Bobby Ryan is 23 and has all the potential in the world. I love Gagne, but I can’t be angry about a potential trade until a). it does come to fruition and b). I see what the overall return is, both in terms of trades and free agent signings from a cleared cap space. Sources close to the Flyers have said in the past few months that the Flyers were going to get a young goaltender. My point is just because one rumor is going around and one source has been quoted does not mean it is going to happen. Getting angry about a rumored possibility is fruitless. Wait until something actually happens. Then you can throw shit at walls all you want if Homer screws up.
Chris Pronger stole my last signature.
this
homer has spent too much i think on defense but then again it seems d-men we’re going expensive.
shelley is a mysterious to us, but the rangers fanbase is furious and the experts are saying them losing him was a mistake so maybe we need to wait and see.
the only real mistake homer has made thus far is giving a contract to leighton.
as far as gagne, wait and see what happens. and then maybe we can crucify homer if need be.

Agree
Agree
Disagree. Gagne has no downside. It makes no sense to trade a guy who is coming off a contract (and should resign for less) in a position we need, when we have a guy coming off a contract (and will get a raise) in a position we don’t need.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
fair enough.
the only thing i can assume is they just value Carter as a player regardless of where he fits much more than Gagne.
and they believe Carter can play wing.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
On your point about the 3rd defensive pairing, you make a good point, but Homer needn’t have taken up a guy who in his old team is considered horribly overpaid.
If they traded Gags for a kid like Bobby I could handle it, because there’s a chance Bobby could become the heart and soul of this team (although I’d still rather trade Carter and get something more in return along with Bobby). If they traded Gags to move salary and sign a goalie I couldn’t. That would be just atrocious mismanagement. Sorry.
But you’re right, I am overreacting to a rumor. But then I was a bit bemused by reactions to that rumor.
by PursuitOfLappyness on Jul 1, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions
oh i agree
its terrible management to trade gags to move salary to sign a goalie when they should have been able to do it without moving Gagne.
but this is the situation. And if Gagne means a better goalie than Leighton and still room to get a winger so we’re not offensively deficient… then thats the bad situation homer has put us in, but I would accept it because we need a better goalie and would need another winger to fill Gagne’s spot. I wouldnt like it, but id accept it.
if the flyers move gagne and dont get BOTH a goalie and a winger replacement i will be very pissed.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
and on Meszo being overpaid. ill wait and see how he does on the flyers. having him signed signed for 4 years at 4 mil might end up being just fine.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 1, 2010 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
i feel like the real problem here is that homer was chicken to play with defense market and essentially got a 5th defender that makes 4million/ year. we didn’t need another $3 million + defender.
