Jody Shelley signs with Flyers
Jody Shelley has signed with the Flyers, according to various sources. It's reportedly a very, very expensive three-year deal worth $1.1 million a season, but that seems almost too ridiculous to be true.
What could this mean for Dan Carcillo and Darroll Powe, the two RFA's not yet signed by the Flyers? Well, the team is right against the salary cap, so something has to give here... and quickly.
What the hell?

i hate it because it pretty much means that either powe or carcillo arent coming back, or someone else is getting traded. don’t understand this one
I agree.
So, is it Carcillo or Powe who goes?

Oh wait…
Apparently it’s Cote.
How are we going to sign Carcillo and/or Powe?

I think this is the end of Powe. Richie/Carts/Gags. Briere/Lieno/Harts. Shelly/Betts/Lappy. G/JVR/ who. Is the who gonna be Carcillo… eeh. Powe… eeh. Let em go. Get a legit third line guy (you have Maroon and Legin and Nodl that can all fight for a spot).

I’m gonna keep my judgment to myself until he plays. 1.1 seems like a good amount of money, but obviously there is something seen

Homer was right that he was a fan favorite. I hope they keep him (although Powe was pretty good too).
I can read the future, while lesser men read comic books.
And this makes me pretty fuckin’ upset. I know plays don’t stay with teams forever… But damn if Carcillo didn’t keep the Flyers in the game during the regular season last year. So what if he injured himself… He scored, he took penalties, he became a better player under Laviolette. =( I think the kid is in his prime and we should keep him and see if he does even better next year. (And it’s not like he isn’t in shape either, the kid is built like a brick.)
I can read the future, while lesser men read comic books.
I agree. For this much we should have kept Carcillo (maybe we still will? I don’t know). I think he is better than Shelley, he can fight, and he was scoring some good goals, and was completely different at the end of the season after we had him under Lavy, so I think that this is a what the hell signing.

Apparently the rangers are about to sign Boogard for 4 years almost 6 million total, that makes the Shelley signing not look as bad lol. He is going to be useless but At least he is better than Boogard, who hasn’t scored in a few years lol.
Are people really bitching about spending an extra 500k to buy a player? Guys it’s a Jody Shelley screw up of 500k, not a Yashin screw up of millions

You’re actually completely backwards on that.
Say you have $500 to prepare a feast. Each day you go to the grocery store and buy some of what you need. Thus, you can’t return what you previously bought.
You still need a few more ingredients, and you have $10 left. If you spend $5 on a Kitkat bar, and now you only have $5 left to get the rest of the ingredients, you’ve made a monumentally idiotic move.
If you already had the second best feast in the world, and only had 5 bucks left and only had to buy a little something to make it better, do you a. Buy more hot dogs (even though you have plenty of hot dogs already), b. Buy more burgers (even though you have plenty of burgers already) c. Buy better buns (you already have a solid bun, you cant afford the great buns, but you can get a slightly better bun, that may or may not be even noticible (Leighton reference)) or D. get the ketchup/mustard/relish.
If the BBQ is ready, get the ketchup, with that on the burger and dogs everything else tastes better. AKA if the players are protected and dont have to deal with Eager/Goddard/Boogard etc. they will produce even more.

Well, we just have a fundamental disagreement about the nature of hockey.
Jody Shelley is not a condiment. He’s more like a pack of cigarettes.
And (for the much better analogy) this is like spending half your food budget on cigarettes. Not only is it stupid, it’ll kill you.
Maybe this analogy works...
If Chris Pronger uses physicality and intimidation to take away time and space, then Jody Shelly uses physicality and intimidation to gain time and space, by not letting “their Prongers” take away ours. Pronger is the offense in the taking of time and space, Shelly is the defense. By no means am I comparing Prongs to Shelly, but both will help out the club.
by orangeandblack20 on Jul 1, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I can’t disagree with you more.
Is he going to waste Claude Giroux’s talents and retard JVR’s development by being on that line?
Or is he going to be the defensive liability on the line with Betts and Lappy?
The 1970s are over. Players like Shelley serve no purpose.
NOOOOO. Who ever is our 9th forward will play on the 4th line with Betts and Lappy. I think we will continue to mix up our 3rd line using Richie/G/JVR and other combos. Shelly will play 5 minutes just to make sure if Lieno gets his fucking head taken off someone will pay for it.
by orangeandblack20 on Jul 1, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure, let’s put out Jody Shelley to take away time and/or space from Crosby and see how that works out.
Lets put Jody Shelly out there right after a Dustin Byfulgin (who we play 4 times this year) drills Lieno hard into the boards.
by orangeandblack20 on Jul 1, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Because Chris Pronger, Scott Hartnell, Dan Carcillo, Mike Richards, Ian Laperriere and Sean O’Donnell can’t take care of it.
But, if we play Ogie Oglethorpe we’re ready!
You think Byfuglien is going to bother dropping the gloves with a nothing goon like Shelley? Seriously????
All we’re going to wind up with is another Carcillo/Bradley incident where the Flyers need to kill a 9 minute powerplay.
No, I don’t. However, I think moreso than Buff, Eager will think twice before taking a run at Lieno (he KO’d him 2x in the Cup), not becuase he’s “afraid” to do drop em with Shelly, but because he knows that Shelly will be going after Kane or Towes, and unlike Pronger, Shelly WILL drop the gloves if someone says anything to him about it.
Heres the two diff’t scenerios:
1. Eager destroys Lieno
2. Pronger destroys Kane
3. Eager runs at Pronger, Pronger pushes Eager away and Eager skates away knowing nothing happened.
Now:
1. Eager destroys Lieno
2. Shelly destroys Kane
3. Eager and Shelly rumble and everything starts over
or
1. Eager doesn’t run Lieno BECAUSE he knows Shelly is going to run Kane or Towes.

With Jody Shelly the Flyers will never get bullied again. In the cup, Ben Eager and Dusty Buff destroyed Flyer after Flyer with teh only one being able stand up to either, Chris Pronger, and he couldn’t leave the ice. This way, Shelly and Lappy get to patrol, along with O’Donnell. Now we dont need to waste tweener spots on Carcillo who fought and scored, and now if we get another forward he gets to be a scorer to play with JVR and Giroux. Yeah it might be a little expensive, but this was a great move. Its a major toughness upgrade, and still leaves us with a 3rd line hole, which we can now fill with a scorer. Good move.

Goddard and Boogard in the division for 12 games a year… that means 1 of every 6 games we play there will be a moose on the other team. I want a moose. Cote is no moose. Carcillo might be an intimidating deer, but not a moose. Shelly is a moose. Bring on the moose.

no… your not following me. I’m just saying that we didn’t have the big enforser and in our division, with the amount of skill we have you need protection. Ville Lieno, Claude Giroux, and Danny Briere were crushed multiple times in the cup. We didn’t do that to Kane and Towes.

But Shelley won’t do anything either, b/c he won’t dress, that’s not his game. If you were arguing carcillo…okay I could follow you, but if you are arguing this for Shelley you are way off base.
Not to mention pronger pretty much laid out everyone on the Blackhawks until he hit the wall after Game 4.
i can buy this argument
as long as we get a scorer on l3, i’m ecstatic with this off-season already
Which cup finals were you watching?? Do you seriously think that the reason the Flyers lost was because Ben fucking Eager was hitting people?
I think that we had no answer for Eager or Buff in the physicality department. No they didn’t win it for them, but I think they wore us down.
by orangeandblack20 on Jul 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Here’s a quick note, Shelly won’t get any minutes in a Finals series, he probably won’t dress. So this signing doesn’t address that.
That's antiquated thinking though
This isn’t 1970’s NHL. You don’t need goons to win.
Can’t agree. Pronger was a force against Buff (or someone like him), and with the additions already made at D, he will have help in that department. As for Eager, if anyone had bothered to call him for the several times he left his feet and went head hunting, he wouldn’t have had the impact he did. Buff was hitting hard and legal, Eager was not (for the most part). But even if Eager/whomever is doing this, once again, the Flyers already got bigger. FIghting isn’t really there, and if you’re going down this path, why couldn’t we get Brash?
Holy God, i just saw that Dan Ellis signed for 1.5 mil per year, WTF! and we sign this POS for 1.1 mil
I was just going to post about how upset I was the Flyers rushed to sign Leights, and Tampa Bay gets Ellis for less. Hommer made good moves on teh Blueline considering what players are signing for, but in goal, and on offense, this has been horrible so far.
The Leights deal is that much worse given what Ellis just signed for, but I can’t be mad about that b/c this deal has me at my ceiling for anger luckily.
Exactly, just think about it. We are paying more to leights than Dan Ellis is getting! Just like Phalange mentioned, we did not lose because Ben Eager or big buff was beating the crap out of us. See Leights’ baby soft goal that went 5-hole or the fact that every time Kraijck and parent were on the Ice we were getting pounded

Upgrading our 5th and 6th d-men will be similar to helping out our goalie situation.
by orangeandblack20 on Jul 1, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s not the point. The point is they paid too much for Leights…way too much (Biron under 900K, and Ellis for 1.5mil both far less, both better). It’s fine they want to go with Leights, but get value for your $$$.
Exactly. We could have probably gotten Leights for 1M a year, but seeing Ellis going for 1.5M/year, Biron for what Boosh gets, and I saw Mason get signed for about 1.85M a year (I think it’s 2 years/3.7M), we overpaid for him.
Also I’ve been saying on other threads, I think we overpaid for Coburn as well, I feel by about 1M.
This FA day has been anticlimactic. I was all pumped up when we got Meszaros, then Coburn made me go down, getting O’Donnell was good, but this one put me over the top. Too much for somebody who I feel should be paid Cote money.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Well the top 6 d men look good, Pronger, Carle, Timonen, Coburn, Meszaros, O’ Donnell with Bartulis as the 7th is a heck of an improvement. Meszaros hopefully takes away Coburns pp time though, I like Coburn but he’s not a good pp performer. I also like the idea of using Richards at the point on the pp.
That’s b/c Coburn can’t put a shot on the net for the life of him. Why does he deserve Carle money? Carle is so much better
by historywillbemade on Jul 2, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Similar but not the same. they’re gonna get good shots on him, especially in the playoffs. I for one would love to have Ellis, Mason or someone else in there as opposed to leights. I’m not trying to bash leights too much but he is not the answer

If leights plays well this year it’ll be because the flyers put 22M worth of Dmen in front of him, not because he’s worth the 1.5 mil

shit
pitt got both michalek and paul martin…
they’re giving us a run for “best, deepest blue line”
That’s exactly what we don’t need. This team has a ton of gritty players that don’t log key minutes. The last thing it needs is one more gritty player that will play even less minutes and have less of an impact on the game.
Wow, you must really watch those 6:45 minutes per game closely that Shelley averaged this year. Key contributor he is for $1.1mil
That’s fine…but pay a little more to someone who can contribute offensively then, rather than someone who won’t see any ice time. Plus Carcillo averaged almost 5min more a game than Shelley, so who is taking Carcillo’s other minutes???
Look, that’s fine if you want Carcillo gone. But that does not make Shelley a good investment for the team’s needs. Fact is he is a bad way to spend $1.1mil of the Flyers Cap per year anyway you shake it.
we have boats loads of scorers, 8 to be exact… jvr included (please god). need more two way players without a minus at the end of their stat sheet…
I ca see what you are trying to argue, but Shelley is not the answer. It’s not like he has some hidden potential, he is what he is.
And of those 8 scores, 4 are excellent 2 way players (Richards, Gagne, Carter, and Giroux), so we don’t really need another 2 way player that badly. And if we do, Shelley is not a 1 or 2 way player, he is a fighter, that’s it.
No, I don’t have to admit that at all.
A “gritty” player to me would be someone like Hartnell who can get his nose dirty and score some ugly goals.
hartnell showed grit for about 14 games last season… hartnell shouldnt have to score the ugly goals, he actually has some talent if he can stay on his feet.
Sorry, what “role” does Jody Shelley fill again?
If they needed someone to beat people up, couldn’t they call up that waste of a 3rd round pick Garrett Klotz to do it?
I don’t see the point in arguing either, since you obviously live in some kind of bizarro dreamworld where Jody Shelley is a productive and useful player.
I’m gonna guess the Flyers…

trust me, Giroux is one of those players that makes players better, he doesnt need the best line-mates to succeed. Think Joe Sakic would have all those goals and rings is it wasnt for foppa? Plus, he still has JVR. I think a player like Powe is all that line really needs.

I'm about ready to give up on this team
This is so retarded. Holmgren clearly doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. Where’s our #1 goalie he promised us this year?? Meanwhile we’re signing guys like Shelley for 1.1 million a year that could be going towards Nabokov. And I love how Ellis is making less in TB than Leighton. LOVE IT. He upgraded the D, but at what cost? $4 mil cap hit for four years for Meszaros? Another $1 mil for a guy who’s going to turn 39 when the season starts? What about Carcillo? What about Powe? What about a scoring winger for the 3rd line? So far, “D” is the grade I give Holmgren for this offseason.
ok Debby Downer
the offense, still, is one of the best in the NHL, even with Powe playing 3rd line
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
is it though? I mean, other than the Briere line, where was all of our secondary scoring in the Final? Everyone disappeared. I was listening to game 6 of the Final on the radio the other night and I think they said the Briere line was something like a +9 in the Final and the other 3 lines were a -39 or something awful like that. and no flyer had more than like 62 points this year. I love the Flyers, but Homer fucked up with this one.
ok
but two years ago, we had two guys with 85+ points, and 6 guys score 25+ goals
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
that’s true, BUT Richie had a down year without Knuble on his line and missing Gagne for a portion of this season, and Carter was not the same without a focused Hartnell and no Lupul. The lines got jumbled after those two guys left and they couldn’t get consistent offense from anyone. I just wish they’d finally wise up and get some RW and a decent goalie. I like Leighton, but i don’t trust that last year wasn’t a fluke.

Does Shelly take a lot of bad minor penalties or get penalized because of his reputation like Carbomb. I like Carcillo but his stupid penalties combined with Hartnell is frustrating.
Shelly only took 40 minutes in minor PIMS, Carcillo took 62.
Another example of this guy’s uselessness:
Only TWICE in his career has he been on a playoff team. The 08 and 09 Sharks.
In 08 the Sharks lost in the second round. In the playoffs he played in six games, averaging 3 minutes per game, with a total of -1 and one SOG.
In 09 the Sharks choked in the first round. In the playoffs he played in 1 game for 2:02.
I bet he opened up a lot of space in those two minutes.
On the plus side, we’re not Calgary fans.

I know he is popular but I will not lose sleep over Carcillo being gone. I am tired of his act and we really needed a legitimate heavyweight for the regular season. As pestering and feisty as Carcillo and Asham can be in reality when teams like the leafs come into Philly and no one has an answer for Orr or that Rosehill idiot it is just embarrassing. Laperierre is enough of a underweight fighter we don’t need three of these guys.
Just Call Me "M"!
No one has an answer? Here’s an answer to Colton Orr: who cares?!
The Maple Leafs are the second worst team in hockey. Literally every single team in the league had an answer for Coltor Orr and Rosehill at some point.
Stop getting hung up on wins and losses. And if Toronto sucked so it wasn’t worth defending yourself against them, this isn’t the elementary school playground and the turning the other cheek as long as you win philosophy doesn’t hold water.
Just Call Me "M"!
Your philosophy doesn’t hold water when you apply it to things like facts.
But, if you want to focus on beating the dregs of the NHL, feel free.
I would like to see this team focus on beating good teams. I’m sick of never seeing a cup here. If I want to see fights, I’ll go watch MMA.
And the Pens are a bad team we don’t have to worry about beating while Goddard and Rupp do whatever they want and this team has too many undersized pests to actually end the nonsense that took place in every meeting against them this year. Hartnell biting people isn’t isn’t going to garner respect.
Just Call Me "M"!
Yeah, because Chris Pronger is a pussy.
Go ahead and guess how many of the teams in the Top 5 of fighting majors had over 90 points last year. Go ahead, I’ll wait. (it’s easy to guess!)
The Flyers didn’t have over 90 points last year and they got to the friggin final, so what is your point? Worrying about penalties and not gaining the respect of your opponent is a team killer. Look at the Caps all flash and dash and no balls and heart.
Just Call Me "M"!
That would be a good point, if you were right. The Blackhawks would choose to disagree.
But yes, in Bobby Clarke World, that’s exactly how you build a team.
They didn’t give up the core of the friggin team to acquire a goon like in past years. What are you missing? They just, hopefully, got someone who can actually fight the heavyweight fighters in the East on a nightly basis instead of having three guys that do exactly the same damn job on this team like Carcillo and Asham. And incase you missed it Chicago had legitimate fighters to go with their talent. Eager? Did they rely on him to win the cup, no, but did he fill a roll in sheriffing the ice, yes.
Just Call Me "M"!
They have less than $600,000 in cap space left. So yes, they did just give up the core of the friggin team.
But please, completely ignore the facts here. Teams that win Stanley Cups DO NOT FIGHT.
I want to see this team win a Stanley Cup. I don’t give a crap about this wanna be macho bullshit. But that is exactly why the Flyers don’t win Stanley Cups.
You would rather see a guy like Carcillo take 29 minutes in penalties acting like a jackass and lose games 8-4. Brilliant! And what core did they lose Carcillo and/or Asham???, those are some difference makers there. You are over the top in not understanding what you are saying at all. Calm down a review the roster and tell me where this move compromised the team? Signing a 5th defenseman for 4 million instead of using 4 million for a goaltender might be more of a reason then a fourth line fighter. And everyone of the teams in your Cup list had a legitmate fighter on it despite the number of fighting majors. Go review the rosters stat wizard.
Just Call Me "M"!
I’ll continue to rely on reality to form my belief of how teams win Cups. You can use your Broad Street Bully fantasy.
Jody Shelly is not going to help or hurt the Flyers chances of winning a cup anymore then any other fighter on any of the other teams that will legitimately contend. All I am saying is the for the grind of the regular season and the fact that we had three guys doing the exact same thing for this team having this option is one I like.
Just Call Me "M"!
Even if your Cro-Magnon philosophy was in some way remotely true, how can you justify spending 1.1 million dollars for someone who fills this role?
How many fighting majors were there in the Stanley Cup playoffs total? Maybe 1-2?
Yea, that’d be money well spent.
In fact, to completely kill your point, here is every post-lockout champion and where they ranked in terms of fighting majors:
2010 – 21st
2009 – 23rd
2008 – 30th
2007 – 1st
2006 – 28th
I guess 80% of those Cups were flukes.
FWIW the team that won the cup in 07 and lead the league in fighting majors was the Ducks lead by our very own Assistant Captain Elbows.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!

I don’t think they’d hesitate to keep him on the Phantoms for three years.

They could probably trade him for a 7th if they needed to. Please let this be what happens.

And Chris Mason is off the board.
Ladies and gentlemen, your starting goaltender……. Michael Leighton!!!!
If anyone thinks the Leights contract was good after today, they need to be slapped. Anything over $1mil per was wayyyy too much.
But But he was soooooooo gooooooddddd last year
Those people are feeling mighty stupid right now

hindsight is 20/20!!!
jk we should have waited a day (or forever) to sign leights
This is all a bad dream.
Re-sign Leighton (and overpay to boot).
Re-sign Coburn (and overpay to boot).
Sign Meszaros (and overpay to boot).
Sign Shelley (and overpay to boot).
Pittsburgh signs Martin.
This is all a bad dream.
this is a great dream!
best defense in NHL
got younger defensively when cupboard is pretty bare there
get an upgrade on the 4th line
still more to come
i'm convincing myself
i’m not really all that happy about all the signings except on D. But I’m waiting for more things to happen — save your emotions til then. This isn’t the team we head into the season with.
Agreed.

Yes, that’s the way to take all this today.
Our D is better, and there will be more moves coming.

You can go over the cap now as long as you get back under it by October. So if you sign extra salary now, you’ve got 3 months to cut salary elsewhere.
by memphisbrando on Jul 1, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Correct. That has to be remembered.
Also, above, I was talking about straight-up trades, not the maneuvering we have been involved with today.
We will not begin the year with this specific team.

Going over cap (temporarily)
Seen this posted a lot on the boards today. May be a stupid question, but how (other than trades) would the Flyers get under by October?
Being over the cap would logically seem to limit trade leverage—although one should never think too logically when discussing NHL GMs.
LOL! That does seem to work. :)

Goalie?
So with all these acquisitions and signings, what is left for a goalie? or did we just forget about ellis, mason, nabokov, or turco?
Ellis & Mason got deals already, who knows about the other two
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 1, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions
wtf, so leighton will be the starter next season.

At the moment, that does seem to be the case.

and the only way we get a goalie is if we trade carter im assuming
by letsgoflyers21 on Jul 1, 2010 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions
What the hell?
I’m not keen with the acquisitions.
I would have liked Mason, Whitney and Volchenkov.
Kept Bouch as back up cause we owe him that much. He has been there for us through thick and thin. Let Leighton go…
I also though Asham was a force in the end of the season and in the playoffs. He played like a bull. What has Nodl done? Cote and Nodl to the glue factory. Carbomb keeper for sure.
I can’t believe we are going with this into 2011. Unless theres a masterful trade coming….I’m goona be conting the PIMs next season.
Only way to get goalie?
is it safe to say, the only way the flyers get a starting goalie is if we trade carter at this point?
how this happened
I think this is how things went down between Shelley and his agent:
(sitting in conference room)
Shelley: Let’s ask for 1.1 million per year
(Both laugh hysterically for a few minutes)
Agent: Wait. What about Holmgren and the Flyers?
(Laughter abruptly stops)
Shelley: You try his office i’ll call his cell!
If the flyers sign Turco after losing out on Mason and Ellis it will not be good. He’s overrated, please get Nabby if possible or a trade still for a younger talent.
Both Nabby and Turco’s prices plummeted today. Nabby may have to go KHL but Turco may have to sign somewhere for >$2M and fight for the starting job there.
by memphisbrando on Jul 1, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I would not be shocked...
To see Shelley get sent to the AHL, where his cap hit comes off the books and it would also not surprise me to see Homer sit back and continue to watch Nabby’s price go through the floor and then sign him and figure out how to off set the cost between now and October.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

You don’t sign someone with the intent of putting them in the minors. That’s idiotic
by mantis toboggan on Jul 1, 2010 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions
The fact that you think that is idiotic…just curious but the guys in the minors…where do you suppose they all come from? And please don’t say the stork.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Well, you have an excuse – you’re a goalie. And we’ve already discussed our thoughts on goalies.
"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."
And I am just curious…but a guy who has 49 career points in 538 NHL games is automatically put on an NHL roster why?
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
I’m not saying he should. I’m just saying that if a GM signs a guy with defined role and no potential to develop to a 3 year $3.3 million deal, the intention is to put him on the NHL roster
by mantis toboggan on Jul 1, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Well I certainly won’t claim to know Homer’s intentions, but I will say that Shelley has a very defined role, he is a tough guy and an agitator. So he plays maybe 6 minutes a game, and as for potential to develop…he is 34, any developing he was going to do is long past. For all those reasons and more, I think he will be in the AHL.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
he doesn’t get 1.1 mil playing in the AHL
by SanDiegoScraps on Jul 1, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ll be honest with you, signing Shelley and putting him in the AHL is no crazier than signing a guy for 1.1 mil a year to play 6 minutes a game and probably get 2-5 PIM’s a game.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Eh I suppose that’s true, but in those 6 minutes he is at least contributing (negatively or positively) to the actual Flyers team. Signing him to this contract and sticking him in the minors doesn’t exactly make business sense
by mantis toboggan on Jul 1, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions
It does if someone get’s hurt and they need a call up. I am not saying putting him in the AHL is the most likely thing to happen, or that it makes perfect sense, I am just saying that I could see it happening.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
True. I just would’ve preferred a minimum salary guy fill that role
by mantis toboggan on Jul 1, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Wow, I am just gonna stop reading this thread because between the stupidity of this signing and the stupidity of half the comments trying to rationalize this signing, it is making me want to punch something…

No, don’t do that, he will probably hurt you.

I don’t think anyone’s trying to rationalize the signing. Trying to figure out what Holmgren was thinking isn’t rationalizing
by mantis toboggan on Jul 1, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions
The Blackhawk’s situation is still dire, even after trading Ladd. They have just over 4mil to sign 3 forwards, 3 defenseman and a goalie to ice a 20 man roster
Poor them.

WTF are the Flyers doing? Did Homer dip into some of the special sauce this morning?
How exactly is this guy worth over $1M? He should be getting the league minimum. Regardless of his salary, why exactly did they even sign up to begin with? The old days are over. This team needs to start evolving rather than trying to field a bunch of oafish goons.
I really hope there is more going on behind the scenes that hasn’t surfaced yet. The financial terms of these other moves (Meszaros and Coburn) are just as bad and again seem lackadaisical. What happened to focusing on the keeper position? Is Leighton really going to be the starter?
Lappy's Brain Contusion
How much does the Lappy injury have to do with this signing. He will now where a shield and probably not drop the gloves as much nor should he have to he is too valuable on the PK to get a serious injury from fighting. Maybe that has something to do with upgrading the fighter?
I don't get it...
i have no problem adding shelly… but the JVR, Giroux line needs a RW who can score… is prospal available???
by Elmo the faithful fan on Jul 2, 2010 12:08 AM EDT reply actions
He signed with the Rangers already yesterday, 1 year incentive laden deal.
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 2, 2010 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree but Powe, Asham and Carcillo also could not score. I rather see a young kid move up from the Phantoms then Powe or Asham up there. Still some options out there at the RW Fedotenko, maybe a incentive laden deal to Guerin or Selanne would fit. Not many forwards signed so I wouldn’t flip out yet about the RW yet.
Lappy a +35 contract, and is on the books for the next 2 season no matter what.
He cant be out fighter on that 4th line any more.
He is better than Cote
Here are some thoughts Fear the Fin had about Jody Shelley when he was traded to NY
bread. butter. cheese. VICTORY!
Yeah, I don’t think Lappy should be fighting anymore. Still, is that really a reason to bring in Shelley?
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Well, you’re losing Asham, remember. So the only forwards now who should drop the gloves will be Hartnell and Richards (and Giroux once or twice a year), and you really don’t want them dropping them too often. So… yeah, from that perspective, they did need a fighter who can fight.

Lappy will still want to fight., its in his blood
He will have to anticipate when lapppy is about to drop them, and come in fast and take his place.
That will be his roll
Lappy is almost as good as picking the right time to fight as Lavy is with picking when to take a Timeout
