Monday Morning Fly By: Defending ESPN On Hockey Coverage... Or Something

Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • The Flyers made two-signings late last week. The big one, of course, was the signing of Nikolai Zherdev to a one-year deal. [BSH] [CSN] [Puck Daddy]
  • And they also signed Greg Moore, a minor league winger with a small bit of NHL experience, to a one-year deal. [CSN]
  • What to expect from Zherdev. [Hockey or Die]
  • Fear The Fin gathered some reaction to Evgeni Nabokov's return to Russia. [FTF]
  • Kovalchuk might actually put pen to paper today. Or he might not. [ProHockeyTalk]
  • ESPN's "independent" ombudsman, Don Ohlmeyer, tries to defend ESPN's coverage of hockey by arguing that since hockey is in the Top 10 plays every once in a while, it's fair coverage. [ESPN]
  • Puck Daddy points out the absurdity there. [Puck Daddy]
  • Lastly, be sure to vote in the confidence poll on the left sidebar.

ESPN doesn’t cover hockey you can’t defend what doesn’t exist.

Also every time I turn on ESPN I am infuriated afterwards. LeBron, Red Sox, Yankees, LeBron, Favre, Yankees, WNBA highlights, LeBron, Favre. That pretty much sums of the vertical coming up next crawl.

SportsCenter actually showed highlights of summer league basketball. And multiple Top 10 plays of the day came from summer league. Screw ESPN I am dreaming of TSN coming stateside. But my dreams rarely come true.

Cable news used to be good too.....

Once Disney got it’s grubby four fingers on ESPN, and focused on marketing the sports it already has stock in, wonderful sites like this have flourished to fill the void.

Its useful for football but thats about it for me personally. (I’im not a big MLB fan)
Did you know ESPN used to show Rugby? The NFL put a stop to that.

If I want hockey, I have Comcast, NHL network, Vs. and best of all this site, and the rest of the internet.

Personally ESPN is like CDs ; I found better formats to use.
Its outdated and no longer the best tool available.,
The masses are slow to move away and thats fine with me.

espn has stock in hockey, or, rather that Gretzky has his own restaurant in wide world of sports.

ESPN? Outside of football I never turn it on. Even then, it’s only when forced.

I agree. They never show hockey and I wish they did at least give it some time on SportsCenter. But you’re right, their favorite topics are always the same just as you said it. There are plenty of ideas they can try to cover more sports (make SportsCenter longer instead of repeating the same hour all night?).

But if TSN came to the US I would be happy, but for now we can just hijack some Canadian cable.

ESPN owns 20% of TSN. I’m pretty sure they run their websites, also.

ESPN also is the major profit source for Disney, Inc. Much more than theme parks and movies (no joke). So the comments above about ESPN focusing on Disney properties are to be expected from a shareholder-wealth point of view.

maybe they are just bitter that the ducks won the cup after they sold them?

by ic0n67 on Jul 12, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a fun comment, however, in reality, the Ducks and the Angels were albatrosses on the Disney balance sheet. Disney bought the teams before they bought Cap Cities/ABC I beleve. Note that Time Warner took years trying to get rid of the Braves (and eventually simply sold them to their former partner Liberty Media).

The only Flyers-related aspect to this is that somehow Comcast has done a better job owning teams than a lot of other media groups. Most of you probably don’t remember that CBS owned the Yankees before Steinbrenner, or even that News Corp (FOX) owned the Dodgers in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Ahh, the heady days of the 90s, when every conglomerate had to have a sports team.

by The DTrain on Jul 12, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting, I didn’t know that ESPN was Disney’s major source of profit.

I knew that TSN was somehow owned or controlled by ESPN, but if we had it on channels in the US, hockey fans could get the coverage they want and ESPN would have more time to focus on Favre’s retirement decisions.

I do understand why ESPN always focuses on the popular teams and all that, I just wish they’d report sports for everybody.

Second quarter 2010 profits for Disney by division:
Cable TV: $1,180 million
Movies: $223 million
Theme parks: $150 million
Broadcast TV: $123 million

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on Jul 12, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks, TD. Of course, there are some other cable assets other than ESPN, but they are by far the largest component.

I actually was going to post “the majority of profits from ESPN” but wasn’t sure that was still true. Apparently, it is. And by a large amount.

See above post. Broadcast TV: $123 million. Way less than cable.

Disney has been rumored for months to be trying to get rid of ABC. That makes sense from a balance sheet perspective, but I can’t quite get my head around that as a sports fan (will all ABC-related sports now just be on ESPN?)

Disney’s got a ton of assets that people don’t realize are theirs:

Movies: Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Films, Dimension Films for everything prior to October 2005, Marvel Studios, Pixar, Buena Vista International

Network: ABC, including 10 owned stations (including WPVI-6)

Cable: Disney Channel, ABC Family, SOAPnet, Lifetime, A&E, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Biography Channel, Military History Channel, Crime and Investigation Network, and partial shares of a German network and the Central European division of HBO, 30% of TSN.

They also own Hollywood Records, which, in addition to the saccharine kiddie-pop, also has the artists Rascal Flatts, Plain White T’s, Breaking Benjamin, and Queen.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on Jul 12, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup. Forgot they owned Discovery Channel (they bought it in the last couple of years). That and ESPN I’d guess are the major contributors to the cable business unit.

But if TSN came to the US

I’ve got family who live just south of Welland, Ontario. My cousin wanted to switch to cable so I bought his dish & receiver from him. I get TSN and TSN2 and 5 regional CBC stations so I get all the games et cetera. There’s Sportsnet too but it’s pretty lame.

T Shirt Idea

How about a t shirt that says “Big Ville Style” and has a picture of Leino on it?
Also, my friend had an idea thats similar to the Phillies shirts that say “ill” in the phillies font. Instead is says “ille” and has a picture of Leino. What do you think?

by Parduno on Jul 12, 2010 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

everyone's sick of hearing it but

so if they Kings get Kovolchuk, i bet if you offer them Carter for Simmonds and 2 or 3 draft picks, they would go for it.

I mean Carter playing with Kovalchuk, obviously defense is an issue, but Carter and Kovy together and Kopitar and Brown on the same team. I dont think they could turn that down.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 12, 2010 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah at this point I’m sick of hearing it. I’m done talking about it until something happens.

However, to just talk hockey. I don’t think Carter and Kovie would work on the same line together. That’s two guys that aren’t known for their distributing skills, and need to have the puck a lot. Just my opinion. For your fantasy lineup, they work well together, in NHL 10, maybe, if you are playing the game, in the real world I’m not sure their games match up well to be on the same line. Still, it be a nice problem to have to make work obviously.

by DLJr on Jul 12, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Just imagine the SOG totals

The two of them would rack up.

by doubleh on Jul 12, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

that would still rack up the same combined and each only score around 30 goals. Just because you get two guys who shoot a lot doesn’t mean you will get more shots on goal. Like Basketball there are only so many shots to go around. Kovy can get 50 on LAK where Carter and Kovy might get 70 combined. I rather save the 5 million and just run Kovy out there.

Oh BTW we are not trading Carter so at this point we can pretty much stop talking about it.

His NTC has not started
He has shoulder surgery this time last year (twice)
He didn’t bother to score the winning goal in Game 6
he is a UFA in 2020 so he should me more valuable than Gagne or Carter
Combining Gagne and Carters stats, they play more ice time per game and score more total points
He will free us cap space
It will truly let Homer show Clark who is in control of this ship
We can afford to keep Cote Carcillo, and Shelly!
He isn’t a winger and we need wingers
and most importantly…
We can trade him for a Goalie

I actually rarely visit ESPN the website for anything anymore. It used to be great, but I feel Yahoo and even AOL:Fanhouse has far surpassed ESPN for sports reporting, even beyond hockey. Yeah, I still flip on sportscenter at home for general sports, but during the hockey season, I basically watch the NHL network for hockey highlights.

It may be a bit of an overpayment now

but he just turned 23 and is starting to show signs of being a solid defenseman. If he can continue his growth, I really wouldn’t be surprised if he turns into the next Kimmo.

Of course, watching the Sharks push the Blackhawks ever further to their cap brink gave me a nice chuckle.

"I did my walk of shame this morning and everyone was so much nicer," she said. "People were inviting me to parties at 9 a.m."

Yeah, I’m less surprised that they gave him that kind of money and more surprised they gave him that kind of money INSTEAD of taking the picks.

by Snevik on Jul 12, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

They’re flirting with the cap right now:
Forwards: Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp, Bolland, Kopecky, Reasoner, Brouwer
Defense: Campbell, Keith, Seabrook, Hammer
Goalie: Huet
Cap hit: $58.74m including bonuses carried forward from last year.
Cap space: $660k to sign 4 forwards, 2 defensemen, and 1 goalie. Even cutting Huet only gets them to $6.285m to sign 8 players.

Honor is no substitute for victory.

by The Dark on Jul 12, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

So, if they are intent on keeping Niemi (which they seem to be), that’s almost nothing substantial left to sign the rest of the team.

I wonder if Seabrook, Sharp, or some combination of Kopecky/Reasoner/Brouwer will be on the move. (The fact that they matched on Hjalmarsson makes me think it could be Seabrook.)

then they cant afford him, and he gets to walk as a UFA

by Prometheus74 on Jul 12, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

That arbitration is going to be hard. Niemi won a cup and is a starter but the goalie contracts this summer are a suck. I say he gets 3 million whatever it is it has be more than Nitty’s 2 million. And say double Leighton, the goalie he beat for cup salary, that should be fair.

That would leave them with 3.5 million to sign 5 goals after cutting Huet. LOL

The Flyers would never be in this situation for 2 reasons.

1) Our upcoming RFAs aren’t as good as Toews, Kane and Keith

2) We didn’t go out and add a 6 million dollar contract that last 3 offseasons.

I think he might get a big payday

The players union and every Goalie whose contract ends in the next 54 months will be happy to donate $ for Nemis Arbitration Lawyers.
The Goalie bubble pop.
Their nice little monopoly vanished quicker than anyone realized.
Nemmi arbitration will truly set the standard.

Im going to bet he wins a big 3.8M

Honestly parting with Toews is probably the best solution for them he is good an all but I don’t think he is worth over a 8 million dollar cap hit factoring in the bonus money.

Yeah, I mean I’d love to have Sharp back too, but not only would Chicago not go for it, the Flyers can’t afford Sharp.

We talked about this in some thread awhile back. Especially since the Gagne debacle, I think they are going to waive Brian Campbell in addition to Huet. This becomes even more likely with the re-sign of Hjalmarsson. Then they might let Niemi go and sign Turco and keep Toivonen or Crawford as backup.

As I calculate it, they would have $10 M left after signing Turco and would need to sign 3 forwards and 2 D. Do-able.

Of course, if they waive and put both Huet and Campbell in the minors, NHLPA might grieve.

Yes I am old. I remember the Phils good old days and their bad old days. Course, the good old days I'm thinking of were in 2009.

Do you think people will really start waving all these vets and burying their contracts? The NHLPA won’t like that very much (even if it is in the rules to do it now). I can’t see that working adventitiously for the next CBA negotiations … unless the owners are prepared for a lockout to get rid of the cap now

Backing Backlund for 2010-2011

by ToddtheFox on Jul 12, 2010 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe soon Kovalchoke with bite the bullet and sign already so that the rest of the league will get off their asses and do something already. I feel like after that gets done we’ll have second free agency craze and a rush to dump salaries from teams with a lot of trades (you know like Gagne finding out what his future might be). I feel terrible for gagne right now. This endless waiting has to be grating on his nerves,

by historywillbemade on Jul 12, 2010 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

not that we trust Eklund or hockeybuzz but here’s the latest they had to say about gagne. most of it is common sense but it looks like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel.
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/Simon-Gagne-Fate-Appears-Tied-To-Kovalchuk-Sharp-in-play/1/29319
“Talking to people today I can tell you this. Simon Gagne is not very happy about this dragging on. Not very happy about the entire scene right now. I feel for the guy. Been a very strong soldier for this organization for a long time. To be ask to waive a No Trade Clause for a a gamble like Zherdev doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I am not convince Simon will go to any team with the possible exception of the LA Kings.

I asked a source today if Simon was the Kings back-up plan, and was told, “No. I think he could go to LA either way.” I get the impression the Kings have two plans here to acquire Gagne. One with, and one without Kovalchuk, but either way it appears very clear nothing happens with Gagne until Kovalchuk resolves…

Gagne probably knows this as well as anyone, as was indicated by his comments this weekend saying, “We’ll have to see what Monday or Tuesday brings.”

I am told as well, there is a very good chance the Flyers are getting a goalie back in the deal, which will help Simon feel better about waiving his NTC…since he is the kind of guy who would like to think it meant soemthing to the team."

So the only way I figure we might be able to snag Bernier or Quick is if LA is unable to sign Kovy but it looks like LA will probably take gagne but our return depends on kovy’s signing…so kovy signs with la, less of a return in trade, but if kovy doesn’t sign with LA we get more. thoughts?

by historywillbemade on Jul 12, 2010 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Since Kovie is such a giant cap hit, I’m guessing in this scenario someone else goes with Simon if they do not get Kovie, and then we get Bernier or Quick. I have no idea who that would be (but I’d guess a D-man).

But it is also quite possible Eklund is smoking something.

neither do i…carle is our 3rd best d-men…i’d rather coburn

by historywillbemade on Jul 12, 2010 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

that would not be a good trade at all.

we’d be out a winger and a defenseman. losing carle, would make our defense a wash from last year as from as im concerned. that would be a major loss. i would be very much against it.

unless after we move gagne and whomever on defense, we use whatever cap space is leftover from whichever LA goalie, to sign a replacement defender and winger. but do we have the cap room even after clearing gagne and carle/coburn’s contract.

what’s Quick’s cap hit?
what’s Carle’s cap hit?
Coburn’s cap hit is what again?

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 13, 2010 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Quick is 1.8 million
Carle is 3.2 same as Coburn. it works it in terms of numbers but is bad trade. now gagne for quick straight up might be a steal

by historywillbemade on Jul 13, 2010 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions

id settle for gagne and coburn for Quick.

we get a good goalie, clear a bunch of cap space. and to me coburn can be replaced with someone who can do a decent job at a cheaper price.

at that point we’d have a goalie. and about 6.4 mil in cap space. Should be enough to hunt for a RW for the first line and a 3rd pairing defensemen to go with O’Donnell and keep Powe. However if instead of doing any of those 3 things we keep Carcillo, i will be pissed, especially since we’d have the cap room to address real needs and not carcillo

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 13, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

actually we’d still need to cover Zerdev, so… well maybe we’d still be able to get another RW and a 3rd pairing defenseman for 4.4 million. Dont know if we’d be able to keep Powe though.

by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 13, 2010 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions
