Around SBN: Missouri Survives Scare, Louisville And Marquette Roll

Beware of stupid, unbelievably annoying Philly.com video ads on link. Can you get rid of those, already, Philly.com jerks?.

Ron Hextall will be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame this year, the organization announced at a press conference today. He'll join the 1974 and 1975 Cup teams, Fred Shero, Bill Barber, Gene Hart, Ed Snider, Bernie Parent and Bob Clarke as the current Flyers members of the Hall.

Hobey Baker, whose name was spelled wrong in the Philly.com article linked above, will also be inducted. Baker, a college hockey legend and the namesake of the annual award for the NCAA's top player, was born in Bala Cynwyd. He played his college hockey at Princeton, where the old rink on campus is aptly named for him.

Hextall AND the Tugger?

That’s too much awesomeness for one induction. Two of my all-time favorites.

This is the single greatest news ever. Only the retiring of The Real Great One’s number 27, or his eventual induction in Toronto (or adopting me as his son) will top this.

I honestly feel that if the Flyers retired the number 27, they would have to combine it to honor to both Hexy and Reggie Leach. I think there would be too much backlash if it was just for one of them.

Logically, you’re probably right. In fact, I was going to do fan post on some number retirement possibilities to see who people think should get theirs in the rafters (then studying for the bar exam hit!). I still would love to hear what fellow fans think.

But, as a Hextall fan, Leach can go to hell. They should retire both 27 and 72 for Hexy (just in case someone saw his number in a mirror).

I'm offended by that

I love Hextall too, but Leach is a Flyers legend.

Leach is a Flyers legend.

Hextall is a universal legend. It’s like comparing Tim Kerr and Han Solo.

Hmmm...

OK…I get that you really like Hextall. :)

A mutual retired number is the way to go. Everyone wins that way.

Well, in all seriousness, you’re dead on. Leach is one of the greatest scorers we’ve ever had and Hextall one of the greatest goalies. It’s pretty ridiculous that Steve Downie or Jan Hlavac were skating around with that number.

by The DTrain on Jul 14, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. It should have been a mutually retired number a long time ago.

Maybe this is the year…

I’m still thinking the 25th anniversary factor might kick in, and if the Flyers are ever going to consider retiring 31, it’ll be this year. I don’t know if they’re ever really going to do it; but I expect that with the milestone being in November, the chatter encouraging them to do it will increase as the beginning of the season approaches. I think the number retiring conversation this year is going to be so focused on 31 that I just don’t know if anything else will get attention. All just my opinion, of course.

I’d be up for 31 being retired as well.

I’m still surprised that 27 hasn’t already been, though.

I think it would be great if they finally officially retired 31. No one’s worn that number since Pelle and it needs to stay that way.

Agreed. Pelle you will be missed. You know something sad: Micheal Leighton’s name will be spoken in the sentence as Hextall, Lindberg, and Parent b/c those are the only 4 Flyers’ goalies to take us to the SCF. sigh. To think one day some unborn Flyers fan will look back at Flyers history and think Leighton was great based on his ECF performance.

He did well against Boston too. He’s not the goaltending Anti-Christ…

And Pete Peeters and Wayne Stephenson. But yeah.

I think Leighton’s name will eventually get lost under the 5 cups in a row from 2011-2015 in front of Bobrovsky. No need to worry.

Why not retire both of them and call it a day? Hang two banners: Leech & Hextall. They both more than deserve it!!

I believe in Danny C.

Will Steigerwald be invited to unveil Hobey Baker’s plaque?
