With Flyers in town, Hurricanes to retire Brind'Amour's number on February 28
The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they will retire Rod Brind`Amour's number 17 to the RBC Center rafters on February 28th prior to a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Brind`Amour retired from the NHL a few weeks ago.
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team will honor former captain Rod Brind’Amour by retiring his No. 17 sweater prior to the Hurricanes’ game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011. Brind’Amour announced his retirement from hockey on June 30.
Brind`Amour is obviously still a fan favorite in Philadelphia, and you have to expect that a lot of Flyers faithful will be making the pilgrimage down to Raleigh for the Friday night game. According to the Hurricanes, individual game tickets for that night will go on sale in December.

Good for him. Glad his number, and his achievements are being recognized somewhere. Shame it’s not here though.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Absolutely correct!
I’m STILL pissed off over that trade! Brind’Amour was on my “untouchable” list, should’ve retired in Philly.

Agreed. Primeau’s time here was very good and productive. I loved Brind’Amour as well, but you have to give up talent to get talent sometimes.

Truth be told they picked up Primeau for totally different reasons than what he was for the team. He was picked up as a big thumpy top line center to fill some of Lindros’s void at the time. He evolved into the captain and the checker we loved while he was already here. It wasn’t expected him to be in the role. But yeah …. you still can’t badmouth him.
We are all friendly so in regards to praying at the alter of Primeau’s super stardom give me his hall of fame career highlights. Holding out and talking his baby ass out two franchises and one 5OT goal doesn’t make a legendary career. And how this guy got away with knifing a real legend in the back is completely unacceptable to me. Bill Barber deserved better by the team and the organization despite his coaching prowess. And when a team gets ousted from the playoffs as they did it falls on the players.

OK, but he single-handedly carried a team through a post-season, to the extent that he had been in the discussion for Conn Smythe without even making the Finals.
Look, I agree that most people turn a blind eye to a large portion of his career here, most of which was unspectacular. Hell, the call for his 5OT goal even includes the phrase “much-maligned,” because people were so angry he didn’t produce. The Barber thing was ugly, but he was the figurehead for an entire room of grown men who had already turned on their coach. But ready for the takeaway point: If you say anything negative about Primeau in reference to the 2004 postseason, you look stupid. Very, very stupid. We know you’re not stupid, but you’re pointing out the one time in his career that he was an absolute monster and saying “it’s bullshit that we settle for that.” Here, “that” happens to be the greatest postseason performance from a Flyer since Reggie Leach and Bernie Parent.

I happen to think so, yes, but whether it was or not is so far from the point of that post. The very fact that you’re willing to consider it a discussion should prove that he was very good in that postseason. You can use any other postseason and any other regular season (well, maybe not 2000-01) as your example for why he sucks. All other options give you sounder footing than trying to take an ax to that mountain.

Well said.
I love Lindros and Brind’Amour too, but they didn’t win it all here either. I’d never denigrate either player.
Fun fact: the 1997 Flyers and the 2004 Flyers both won zero SCF games. If you want to say “at least they got there”, remember that the 2004 Lightning won the Cup; the 1997 Rangers weren’t that great.

Again, this is just my opinion. The larger point is that he was excellent; the details are up for debate. I think what Primeau did that year carried a team that wasn’t as good or complete.
I’d agree with that – Primeau was the prime mover that year.

worst thing the Flyers did was not make him as Assistant Coach immediately after he retired. He was a strong enough voice and that team needed a buffer between them and Hitchcock at the time.
That would have been a good move. I wonder if it was even considered.

Sunglasses? I’m just saying the team needed him and probably suffered more because of him not being there than anything else that happened that year.
Class Decision
Class decision by an organization to retire his number, and even more classy that they chose to do it in front of the Flyers, I will be getting a ticket to that game. He deserves it, we should repeat the favor and put his name in the rafters of Wells Fargo Center (still sounds a bit odd).
I think he’ll be a Flyers HOF inductee at some point, but I’m a pretty strong believer that only Cup winners should have their names retired. The only exception I would make at this point is Pelle Lindbergh.

I feel like there’s some precedent for doing thing like this in front of a player’s other meaningful team, just like when we scheduled Eric Desjardins night when the Canadiens would be here and both teams had gifts for him. That’s just one example, I’m sure there’s plenty more.

It’s a shame the organization stuck with lindros and not Brind’Amour. He has more class and puts more effort into his game than lindros, not to mention he knows how to skate with his head up. But its good to see him getting the recognition that he deserves as a great player.
p.s.
its also pretty messed up with whats happening to gagne hes the verteran on the team and should retire as a flyer but the way things look thats not going to happen.

Also, seeing as the organization reached out to keep him in the fold, chances are he’s probably a decent human being. As far as what he’s done for the crest, he put his brain between us and losing, and got his eggs permanently scrambled for us. So, a tad more respect, maybe.

None of those are qualification for having your fucking number retired. Love Rod, but there’s a base level of greatness associated with these things. The Flyers have pretty clearly drawn that mark at “Hockey Hall of Fame.” Brind’Amour, great guy and great play though he is, will never be in the Hall of Fame.
So I’m asking what standard they are using instead, and “trying really hard” isn’t a satisfactory answer to that.
Bruish won a cup and he will never his # retired
So no, the cup alone wont get you in the Hockey Hall of Fame of earn you a Banner
But if you “Try really hard” and deliver the Stanley cup, all the while being a top performer for more than a decade, win the Selke Trophy trophy twice, you start to distinguish yourself above your peers.

He was one of the nicest guys I have ever met, aside from Keith Primeau. But Mark Howe could be one of the greatest flyers, possibly the greatest, arguably of course, to never have his number retired.
Brind’Amour played for Carolina which was originally the Hartford Whalers who had a player named Mark Howe

But I am glad that they are doing it in during a Flyers game, as he was very important to us before he was traded, so there will be something for both teams at the game. He was a great player and always worked very hard and won the cup with Carolina so he deserves this honor.
