Their names are Johan Backlund, Sergei Bobrovsky and Joacim Eriksson.
Two of the three are undrafted free agents, the third a seventh-round pick. The oldest is 28, the youngest is 20, and one speaks no English.
So does that means Eriksson does speak English, since we know Bob doesn’t?
And I’m not sure I see Backlund as a “goalie of the future.” He is 28, so his shelf life isn’t that great, unless he turns into a Hasek or Johnny Bower. He could be a mid-term solution while Eriksson and Bobrovsky work through the system, but he probably won’t be an NHL goalie in 2015, just due to the odds.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
what were Eriksson’s stats like last season?

For regular season Allsvenskan. He was 2.39, .923 in the Kvalserien trials. In the U20 International play, he was 2.50, .919. The Kvalserien would be the toughest competition he faced, since that’s a five-team round robin of the top three teams from Allsvenskan (pro second division) and the bottom two teams from Elitserien (pro first division), to select two teams to be in Elitserien next year.
To provide in-league reference, he was #3 in Allsvenskan in SV% (Viktor Fast was .9304, Christopher Heino-Lindberg was .9303), was #4 in GAA (behind Fast, Heino-Lindberg, and Fredrik Petterson-Wentzel), and #1 in shutouts with 8
Honor is no substitute for victory.
You made me curious, so I did a little googling and apparently 85% of Swedes speak at least some English because it’s a compulsory subject in school from the time they’re about 8. So he can probably at least ask for directions and describe the weather. The more you know!
Yes they do. I lived in Sweden for 4 months. I actually taught English in Sweden and sometimes I forgot that English was their 2nd language

I actually watched Girl with the Dragon Tattoo last night on Netflix (decent crime drama … caution: rape scene is obviously disturbing and I’m not quite sure why it needed it … in fact just fast forward through most of Lisbeth’s scenes until about half way through the movie and you’d be fine) .. anywho .. the two languages are not too terribly far apart. I could get some of the basic ideas without subtitles even though I never had any Swedish if you exclude this guy:

I thought TGWTDT was really good. And yes it was a little rapey. My gf read the book and she thought that it was actually a pretty good transfer to film. The Sweedish did seem to sound a lot like English at times.

Swedish sounds like Old English (they are actually related linguistic). Sweden is also an amazing place to live. I taught HS in Sweden and that HS had a lake in it’s backyard…a lake!!!

haha that was hilarious. I like how everything in the kitchen was making the music.
Seeing the swedish chef though makes me think of the Robot Chicken sketch where he was just walking by anything that rhymed with “Bork”. Funny stuff.

Although I truly believe if you are going to service a society that speaks a certain language that you should at the very least put a concerted effort into learning the language, what does the inability to speak English have to do with the price of tea? Hockey is a universal language.
I was thinking of it primarily for instructional purposes – if the coach has to talk to a translator to talk to a player, it takes longer and has a higher risk of misunderstanding. It’s not a “must-have,” but it’s certainly a “nice-to-have.”
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Well I can’t say that I am a goalie … but couldn’t you just pantomime what you are trying to say. I can’t see explaining positioning being that hard … or i could be extremely wrong
I don’t know. I only played goalie for soccer, where there wasn’t much that couldn’t be done with pantomime, but I was calling out marks for defensemen a lot. I don’t know if hockey goalies are as…talkative.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Some are more talkative than others. Mostly they will just call out the pressure on you if you are going back for a puck in the zone. They will let you know when they are screened, who to move out of their way, or if you are screening them. Sometimes you’ll get a goalie that will yell who to cover on breaks, but that is rare, since you should know how your goalie prefers you to play those situations before hand. That’s pretty much it for the most part. You usually do most of the talking with the center and other dman for coverage in front of the net and in the corner. Every once in a while the goalie will point out someone to pick up, but that’s about it.
as a goalie, I typically call out pressure on players. Occasionally I will call out open shooters to my defense to pick up when play is in our zone (“slot” “backdoor”). I’ll always try to call out the location of the puck/ ball if the players can’t find it (“up”, “feet/skates”, “behind”). I’ll let my defense know when screened (“screen!”)…and of course let the forward in my face know that I don’t appreciate his presence with a push or slash to his stick. I will also clack my stick when a penalty is expiring or sometimes do it to show support for my team. During intermission, I let my team know patterns that I am noticing about our defense and the opposing goalie (I watch the other goalies practice and play when i have a chance). I do all these things as a goalie and i never played organized hockey before college.

Also just in terms of having to guess at what everyone’s telling you and trying to live your life without understanding much of what you hear/read has to be pretty stressful and not great for your mental game. Not to mention team bonding/cohesiveness etc. It’s got to be awkward to be the guy sitting in the corner that no one can talk to.
oh Neil Little- the Phantoms Legend who never got a fair chance at the NHL. What about Riopel? couldn’t he also be starter of the future

Koivu
Koivu was going to unrestricted next year right? Does anyone really believe he was going to command that type of salary. I know Behind the Net thinks so, b/c he is a complete player. Granted, I don’t get to see him that often, but I have a hard time buying he’s in Datsyuk’s league offensively, and that he would actually command this type of salary. I could see him in the $5.5 area, but jeeze $6.75. I don’t know maybe I just don’t understand salaries in the NHL or understand Koivu’s true value. But given the contracts handed out this off season, I just don’t know, I guess Marleau’s would be the comparable player. Still this seems way off of what I would have guessed.
Behind the Net goes by production value relative to the market, not what the market pays. So, for example, Halak is overpaid, but not by much – not because his $3.75m deal dwarfs the next highest paid goalie this year (Niitty at $2 mil) – because Halak’s save percentage is x% higher than the league average, which is $x million. Halak should get $y million based on his performance and the true cost of his skill, but instead he got $z million.
I hope you could follow that… If not, Gabe doesn’t care what Marleau or Carter or Iginla will sign for, it’s what does the league pay it’s players for how they are relative to the average (maybe he uses mean).

Yeah I understand that thought, I just disagree, maybe it’s the Economist in me. I can’t see this being good value for the Wild.
much like Buffalo who overpaid for Vanek because already lost Drury and Briere as UFA, Minnesota overpaid for Koivu because they let Gaborik walk last year. Their fans would have been furious beyond furious to see their captain walk.
I think Edmonton signed Vanek to a 7.5 million dollar offer sheet. If the Sabers didn’t match Taylor Hall might be in Buffalo right now.
dunno about that last statement. wasn’t Vanek hurt for part of the year and they still put up 100pt season. Ryan Miller would’ve prevented Buffalo from being the bottom of the barrel

I love the logo, the design and the tone but that gold is just terrible. Not my style. Don’t mind the stripe on the home jersey. That’s fine, those colors work well together. However, the all goal with navy stripe…puke.

I like Eriksson’s old Byrnas sweater:

His one for Leksands has the advertising patches, but remove those and it’d be made of win. Simple, classy, and I like the four-pointed stars flanking the team seal:

Personally I love the ads on euro jerseys,a nd the IIHF country jerseys.
Anyone interested in an Estonia IIHF World Juniors game worn jersey. I’m looking to upgrade my collection, that one can go hahaha.
I actually kind of like the Clas Ohlson one – it’s in the uniform color, and it looks to be embroidered on. The Ejendals and the Bergkvist Insjon ones are in black, and look like they’re on patches, which doesn’t look as good. I know the direct stitching would be more expensive, since you’d need new sweaters when a sponsor changed, but it looks much better than the patches.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
They make work shoes, protective gloves (chemical resistant, those sort, not sports gloves), and skin care products.
Clas Ohlson is a chain store that sounds like a cross between IKEA and Best Buy (though more towards the electronics side of best buy, not so much the media side).
Bergkvist Insjon is a lumber company.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
A strange list of links. But very telling.
First, thanks to the Euroflyers truth serum, we know that due to his NMC no trade involving Hartnell is imminent:
Hartnell arrived in Siilinjärvi yesterday.
Second, unless Little’s comments are completely spin, the Flyers will not be looking for another young goalie. Which is too bad, since the folks at the Behind the Net site seem to think Harding is trade bait (although the Wild’s cap doesn’t really work to get Gagne, and he might not waive the NTC to go there).
Speaking of Little’s enthusiasm, why does Maxime Ouellet (spelling?) come to my mind right now?
Third, what is up with all the D on the NHL roster for the Flyers to sign a journeyman guy who will make $225 in the AHL? Huh? One thing I can think of is (please let it be true) that Homer hopes to have a D-man (please let it be Meszaros) in play. Unfortunately, the only other thing that comes to mind is that they think their AHL D-men stink and that they want some kind of realistic D in front of Bob/Backlund/whoever. Not good for the future in that case.
Yes I am old. I remember the Phils good old days and their bad old days. Course, the good old days I'm thinking of were in 2009.
Homer's Epics: An Odyssey for the Salary Cap, The Quest For the Goalie Grail
Regarding the AHL signing, I think they signed him so the young guys have a veteran to help their development. I doubt the Flyers will trade any of their top 7 dmen.
by tmurder on Jul 16, 2010 11:22 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
His AHL salary has nothing to do with the NHL roster. Why he got paid so much to play in the AHL is beyond me though.
And signing him isn’t a reflection of the AHL guys, it just means they have four good ones (Bourdon, Marshall, Lehtivuori, and Gustafsson) but they’re all 21 or younger. On top of that, they only have one other Dman under contract, and that’s Tyler Hostetter, he of the 0 professional games played. Now they have 6 dmen signed to contracts for the AHL. Having one of them be a veteran is a good, natural thing. Still, $225k AHL salary is a LOT.

Doubtful, but possible. I don’t see him jumping ahead of Bourdon, Marshall, and Lehtivuori for playing time. Maybe if they need a healthy scratch for a road trip, but not if Bartulis is already in and someone else goes down.

Kimmo Timonen is hosting something against cancer… A primary treatment for cancer is Chemo… Kimmo… Chemo… I smell marketing potential
That’s not ironic it’s just a coincidence. Although a “Who’s on first” style marketing campaign would be funny. Kimmo’s chemo, for chemo by kimmo.

again not the most trusted source but here’s what they had to say:
“On Gagne…
It’s getting closer to being done, but also remains completely tied to Kovalchuk…The Kings are the favorites, but the longer this goes Tampa, Boston or the NY Isles may indeed get better offers on the table."
and here’s the kicker:
“On Theodore…
Don’t be shocked to find Jose in orange and black."
I still don’t see how Boston could be after Gagne as they have no cap space at all and I am iffy on Jose “Three-or-more”
I’d prefer Turco over Theo to be honest

espnrumors today says Leafs interested in Gagne as well but we knew this. so I think I have a pretty good idea that it’s going to be one of three teams: Kings, Tampa, or Leafs.

IMHO, there’s no way Three-or-four is on his way here…well, unless, Homer enjoys the prospect of getting verbal abuse from Flyers fans on an even more regular basis. I know the possibility is just speculation from Eklund, but that scenario is just very highly unlikely.

Some what off topic and not really relevant to anything happening now
but I sort of just realized something. To anyone even who for a remote second felt bad for Boston during the Flyers’ comeback series win and more importantly David Krejci when Mike Richards knocked the crap out of him in Game 3, consider this thing I just noticed as I was looking back on the Olympics: David Krejci scored the winning goal in overtime to knock our Latvian Wolf of the Sea and his fellow awesome Latvian countrymen out of the Olympics.
