Great news for the Flyers in more ways than one. It’s possible that Kovalchuk wil become a complete player, but I doubt it. And how will Parise and company, those who do give it all, react? And Marty Brobeur is on the backside of his career, too. I think the Devils will be less of a force now and that’s good for the Flyers.
Brodeur is beyond the backside of his career.
If they do manage to keep Parise as well they will only be able to afford to fill the roster with guppies who dont know their backwards crossovers yet.

And...
Assuming Kovlachuk’s salary is for more than $3.5 million – he made $7.5 million last season– the Devils will have to move players to get under the $59.4 million salary cap before the start of the regular season.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 19, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
They’re going to have to do that anyway – they’re at $55.393 with 10 forwards, 6 defensemen, and 2 goalies before signing Kovalchoke, so they still need another forward. They can shave some salary by sending down a defenseman and using Davison, but that would remove their 7th defenseman from the roster.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Kovalchoke, love it.
Do one for incomplete/one dimensional.

How many 40+ goal scorers excel in every aspect of the game. The guy is a pure goal scorer, not many teams have one of those. Who cares if he isn’t complete, b/c his talent is rare and special enough to make up for his deficiencies.
Granted I have to hate him now, but the guy is a special player. He is one of the few players in the league, where you can take someone who has never watched a game to see him live, and they will leave going, man that #17 is awesome. The guy is a game changer. I’ll just chalk all this Kovie bashing up to him signing with a rival, but you have to recognize his skill level.
How many 40+ goal scorers excel in every aspect of the game.
My point is he excells in one aspect of the game, not every.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 19, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Transition game, pure scorer, puck control game, PP (can operate from the half wall or point). There are a few….
Even if true (which several of us doubt)…they will still be in cap hell.
Yes I am old. I remember the Phils good old days and their bad old days. Course, the good old days I'm thinking of were in 2009.
Homer's Epics: An Odyssey for the Salary Cap, The Quest For the Goalie Grail
Okay, that’s fine about the cap. But if you can’t admit to those 4 blatantly obvious skill sets Kovie has, I don’t know if you watch him play at all. Now you could argue they are all part of one dimension (offense), but then that goes back to the fact that most 40+ goal scorers are in fact one dimensional players.
The point is not that he isn’t an amazing O player. Obviously he is. I just don’t think he’s going to take the Devils anywhere. I love to watch he score and handle the puck and skate.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 19, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I can understand that point. That’s not what I’m debating up here. That’s our other discussion below. And I will say you could be right on that…time will tell.
HOWEVER, My whole point is, people are all over his defense. But how many of the 40+ goal scorers in the league right now excel at both ends. Crosby is the only one coming to mind right now.
Out of all 7 40+ goal scorers?
I’d put Marleau up there as well, and there are others that are less of a defensive liability than Kovalchuk, but having a player who’s elite at both ends is a rare and valuable commodity.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Again, I’ll allow you your point.
However, even in this case, I would argue it is “subtraction by addition”. They get from Kovie all of those things you say..then .they have to get rid of people just to get into the cap space, possibly getting rid of good players or certainly any depth (thus, subtraction by addition).
You could of course argue that adding Zherdev is also subtraction by addition (we get his shot but lose Gagne. Etc.).
Yes I am old. I remember the Phils good old days and their bad old days. Course, the good old days I'm thinking of were in 2009.
Homer's Epics: An Odyssey for the Salary Cap, The Quest For the Goalie Grail
I’m interested to see what they do. Lou seems like a pretty smart guy, so we’ll see what happens. I think their biggest loss won’t be what they lose from adding Kovie, but from losing Martin. A-Train can’t be a PP quarter back, and Tallinder isn’t Martin. However, this does give more room to Kovie on their PP, so it might actually all fit nicely somehow.
I dont think losing Gagne will be much of a subtraction for the team

Langenbrunner on Kovy signing: “It’s definitely good for our team. He’s obviously a great player and somebody that will get better…”
I wonder what part of his game Jamie’s talking about. Couldn’t be transition game, pure scorer, puck control game, PP (can operate from the half wall or point), of course!
/just bugging you here, couldn’t resist on seeing this quote
by TopShelfTony on Jul 20, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions
It doesn’t really bug me to be honest. I’m 100% comfortable with my point, and this quote doesn’t change it. If there are 2 dimensions to the game, Kovie is 1 dimensional, but so are the majority of the guys that can hit the 40 goal plateau in this league, in particular, the wingers. If you want to break those 2 dimensions down further, then Kovie is not 1 dimensional.
Talk about serious — you must be an accountant, a lawyer, or dentist! This was a total leg pull! The quote is real but I just put it up because it reminded me about your 1 out of 2 works for you comment. Just pokin’ fun there, is all.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 20, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I get it, I just get frustrated with the whole Kovie thing. It’s frustrating to deal with people that expect players to get 40+ goals every year, and also be awesome in their own end (not saying that’s you). I guess I can ask them now if they’d rather Mikko Koivu at $6.75 against the cap or Kovie at $6. The people that want Mikko are probably people who like have 3 scoring lines that are also solid in their own end, the people who want Kovie probably like a top 2 and bottom 2 set of lines.
Those are all O. Terrifc at them, but still only one aspect of the game. Win them some close games? Yes. Lose them some? Yes.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 19, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay, so what are the aspects of the game then…Offense and Defense?
If that’s the case, my point stands, most 40+ goal scorers are one dimensional b/c there are only 2 aspects of the game.
If you want to add a transition aspect of the game, then Kovie excels at offensive transition, but is deficient in transitioning back to defense….this still is half his game, and my point of 40+ goal scorers is still the same.
Brodeur is beyond the backside of his career.

They (when not injured in Elias’ case) were the powerplay (along with Paul Martin, when not injured)/Oduya?etc. My emphasis was on the hardworking aspect more than the scoring. With Brodeur they are the core of the team — how will they react? “Not too well” would be my observation on the quarter reg season plus #17 played with them last year. Of course there were the 5 pathetic playoff games too. Should mention them as well.

They have the off season to get him integrated into whatever system they choose to run now. I highly doubt it will be an issue moving forward. They have an excellent GM who is far more intelligent than the majority of the people here. With all the rumors that were out there, it seemed like Jersey was smart, they gave him an offer, said it was their best and final, and then let Kovie go from there (reportedly at least). I’m almost scared to see the contract b/c I fear it will look far better than most of us think it will.
They actually had more than a third of a season (28 games I think) to get him integrated last year so I think it’s not going to be a fit. Oh, he’ll get his goals of course, but then he’ll do that wherever. I think he’s a Jonah, always have. I like your opinions usually, but we’ll have to disagree on this one.
As for the contract, don’t you think it’ll be a big $ for one yaer or a very long term big $?
by TopShelfTony on Jul 19, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he destroyed their power play. But I also think that was mostly Lemaire’s fault. He should have kept the power play running through Martin instead of trying to run it through Kovie/Martin for the 1st minute, then entirely through Kovie for the second minute.
But again, I don’t think 1/3 of a season is enough time to get a Lemaire system ruining effectively with a player like Kovie. there is a new coach, and no one knows the system. They have a training camp to work out the kinks. It might not work, but I’m not as willing as the rest of the people here to just dismiss the chance of it working effectively.
Time will tell. I don’t hate him, I just think he’s not going to help NJ, but rather hurt it. We’ll just have to wait and see, but I’ll predict now that the chemistry of that team will be poor, Brodeur will not be the anchor he once was, and a rookie head coach — even one as respected as JM — will not be able to hold it together. Will I be right or wrong? Well, I’m right sometimes at least.

I agree about Broduer, which is why I thought signing Moose, even though it thought it was too much, was a great move. They aren’t going to play him as much this year. Also the additions of A-Train and Tallinder will help…unfortunately for the Devils, neither of those players can replace Martin.
It’ll be interesting. I just hate seeing Kovie on a rival b/c I love watching him play. He is just a beast.
They aren’t going to play him as much this year.

Probably good news for Flyers (not for Gagne fans)
Overall, having Kovie crowd out cap space in Jersey is a good outcome in and of itself for the Flyers. This will also facilitate Simon’s move to LA. I don’t personally want this but I have lost any expectation that he will stay with the Flyers, so I would rather he go to a potentially comfortable place (and where we don’t play them very often…preferably just see him at the Cup finals).
I still hope that the deal with LA will include more than Simon (please, let it be Meszaros or Hartnell or even Carter) since I think it would be more likely for us to receive value back in a multiplayer trade than in Simon-only swap where we would be likely taken to the cleaners.

i like the logic but i think we’re going to get hosed b/c of our cap situation. it’s no secret that we are desperate to dump cap space and that will really hurt negotiations. (see upshall, scottie)
but there’s still multiple teams interested in gagne so they bid and the price goes up so maybe we can still get fair value for him. If there’s one thing I trust Homer to do it’s make trades. He may make dump signings or overpay but the guy has a tendency to fleece other teams in trades.

Part of it’s probably money – even if they offered the same deal, NJ’s top marginal income tax rate is about 1.3% lower than California’s. I’d need to see details before being able to toss out numbers, but he’s probably netting a fair bit more money.

Huh. So why don’t more players clamor to go to Tampa Bay? Florida? Dallas?
(Note that the lack of state income tax was influential in the LeBron annoyance in choosing Miami since Florida, as well as TX and TN, has no state income tax).
Of course, it wouldn’t matter if players wanted to go to Nashville for the same reasons…ownership isn’t buying. :-((

TN actually does, but only on dividends and interest payments ;)
That said, Florida’s tied their money up in Vokoun and McCabe, so there’s no room to sign free agents. Tampa’s been committed to Lecavalier and St. Louis under both sets of ownership, and they’ve been cheap, not coming within $5m of the cap for the last three years.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
And Dallas has ownership issues now too, I forgot.
Off-topic: Ah yes, the TN Hall tax. Many ways to legally avoid. But it might affect very-high-income players.

Now I am afraid we are going to see some sad news about Gagne, perhaps even to day, and I just want it to be over so I know what we will look like moving forward and if it is Gagne or Carter going. But the good news is that the Devils are going to have some kind of Cap Hell since he has to be demanding a large amount. I want to see what the amount is and we can laugh at the Devils as they try to get under the cap, helping us because they’ll be over more than we are, maybe increasing Gagne or Carter’s value, especially to LA.

both are given 7.0B’s, which means 2nd line score for forwards, and 2nd pair defense for defenseman. The Flyer #4 and #5 are a 7.0C(Maroon) and a 6.0B(bartulis). to make rankings clear, players like Kane were given an 8.0B, and JVR was a 7.5B. the only 9.0 was Crosby, and the only 8.5 was Shea Webber. So most good prospects are given 7.0B-8.0A.
