Good an Bads So far this off-season.
I know there are more moves to come, but this is an analysis of the moves by the Flyers so far. Feel free to comment and critisize, I want other opinions too.
First off, I thinking the Michael Leighton signing can go one of two ways: really good or really bad. If the Flyers can find a starter, then Leighton will flourish as the teams' steady back-up netminder. If they chose to go with him and Boosh, it will be a disaster. Leighton is not a #1 goalie (as we saw in the cup final). He had hot-streaks this season, and proved he could be a SOLID back-up. If the Flyers could add, oh lets say Marty Turco and trade or waive Boucher (which would be sad 'cause he's a fan favourite), Leighton will be solid as the team's back-up.
Secondley, the additions of Andrej Meszaros and Sean O'donnell was terrific. Meszaros is a young team with tons of potential, and joins Carle and Cobourn as your D-men of the future (after Timonen and Pronger retire). O'donnell gives you depth on the blueline for a cheap price. Yes he is old, but he is still solid for his age, and plus, he's only signed for a year.
Then we come to the head-scratcher. Jody Shelley, really Homer? Carcillo and Powe (Who are much more valuable and waiting for new contracts) and you go and waist $1.1 million of prescious cap-space on a fighter. It makes no sense. Homer said the reason (indirectly) was to replace Riley Cote. What Homer doesn't understand is that there is a reason to why Cote is no longer playing when he STILL has a contract. Laviolette does not like pure fighters on his team. He likes guys who provide toughness, but also provide the team with other values. Guys like Hartnell (tremendous offensive ability), Carcillo (key agitator who can also put the puck in the back of the net), Laperriere (great penalty-killer) and Asham (good offensive ability). Now Shelley sign for 1.1 million per year, while Asham was supposedly not re-signed due to cap issues, who is much better offensively, can still provide toughness (lots of it), and would come at a cheaper price. Same goes for Carcillo, even thought he is still likely to return. Homer you are a geat GM, but this was a bad move.

I like the O’Donnell signing a ton. Meszaros is pricey but I think worth the risk. I can’t understand the Jody Shelley signing. I could deal with it at the league minimum but 1.1 mil? All the cards have not yet been dealt. I really can’ think that they go into next year with this goaltender situation along with the RW position in such bad shape. I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but to be honest I am scared…….

O’Donnell and Meszaros help to give us the best D in the league (this is before any playing starts so it’s all on paper). Plus these are younger guys who will be here when Kimmo and Pronger start to wear down. Plus they give the younger defense men more time to mature in the minors.
Shelley was massively overpaid. Poor move. Sure, bring in a better fighter. But too much for him. I’d be ok if they guy had ANY offensive upside. I’d have been happier to have brought Downie back. If they can make Carbomb figure out how to play hockey, they could with him too. And he has much better hands.
