Almost more questions now than I had before. Some really unbelievable crap went on today. Not really bad or good crap, just some off the wall stuff. One thing is for sure, a trade is coming. The numbers don't add up after the inexplicable jody shelly signing. So I wouldnt even say that's in question. A trade is going down. No doubt. In no particular order, my 3 Big Questions...
1. Who is the back up goalie?
Is it leighton/boucher round 2? I pray to sweet baby jebus NO! sorry boosh. does homer make a trade for a clear cut No 1? Is there an UFA worth signing on the cheap, that would challenge leights? one thing I dont see happening is homer trading for a prospect. you can never have enough young GT prospects, but the flyers need someone ready now, not 1or 2 years from now. they have 3 relatively young GT prospects in backlund, bobrovsky, and erikkson. they seem to have a pretty firm belief that one of those guys will work out eventually. the question is, who is going to come in and make leight reaction sweat?
2. Flyers need a RW... seriously
No offense to aron asham, but I was really hoping that the flyers would sign a couple proven RWs, and finally give giroux some seasoned talent to play with. Im thinking the shelly signing just peed in my apple juice. Ok, now I would think they have to get at least one RW. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time the flyers went against the grain. This is a team that has 26 scoring centers. I might be exaggerating that number, but it's within one or two. Sadly, I think this is one aspect holmgren is going to really disappoint me with. Please prove me wrong homer.
3. Will the D stay this deep?
It almost seems to good to be true. I know people have their concerns about meszaros, but he has raw talent. Stuck on a badly run team in TB, showed amazing talent early in his career and then tailed off a little, but still young and shows promise... who does that sound like? It sounds like Matty "Nasty No Look Pass" Carle. Pair mezzy with CFP for a week or two, and he will be fine. Obviously it's not that easy, but it's very possible. sean o'donnell is just another great veteran guy. a guy that's smelt it, dealt it, and looking to make one more run. Very steady and more of a "let my actions speak" than an in your face guy, so no worries about him rubbing guys the wrong way. Coburn got slightly more than most thought, but honestly the guy earned it. He stepped it up in the playoffs, and looked like the coburn of the "silent fist pump" era. The coburn we all know and love. He came back and he brought the good scott hartnell with him. The fact is, as of now, no team has more money sunk into their D than the flyers. The question is, does it stay that way? I hope it does. It makes me a lot less nervous about the goal tending if it stays like this.
