Update from Travis, 8:30 PM: Simon Gagne has agreed to waive his no-trade clause. For more on the story, visit Anthony SanFilippo's blog at the Delco Times. He reports that a trade is not imminent, but it's obviously in the works.
What becomes of this story is yet to be seen, but discuss it all here.

Yes, thank you, Simon.
I’m too upset to write anything else.

1. Free up cap space.
2. Trade an aging player with known injury problems and on the down side of his career while they can still get something for him.
3. Keep younger players who are yet to reach their full potential (*cough*cough*Carter*cough*cough).
I’ll be sad to see him go, but if the price is right, I won’t be angry. You can’t keep guys forever, and in the case of aging players like Gagne, it is sometimes best to get the most for him while you can, even if it is Homer’s own fault in the first place for overpaying Jody Shelley (everytime I want to call out Homer for overpaying Meszaros and Coburn, I think about watching Krajicek and Parent as our 3rd D line and the heart attacks it caused me; it quickly subsides the anger).
Chris Pronger stole my last signature.
Of course, some others are saying Thomas.
Apparently Gagne has agreed to waive his NTC. Don’t think there will be much interest because of his history with injuries. He’s 30 though.
That from a Pens fan. Misplaced hope? Sign me up.
hogwash!
With the new market price for goalies
Thomas is never going to move unless Boston agrees to eat a lot of that 5 mill cap hit!
bread. butter. cheese. VICTORY!
There are no words to truly explain how I feel.
Gagne has always been how I identify with the Flyers. I don’t live in Philly, or anywhere near it and Gags has been the only constant through the entire time I’ve been a fan of the Flyers. I didn’t use to follow it as in depth as I do now, but I’ve at least tried to follow Gags. I don’t want to say that Gagne is the only reason I like the Flyers, but he is a huge part of it.
The Flyers without him just won’t be the same for me

There have been many times before where a player has waived his NTC and then no deal went through

It would be so awkward if he stayed after waiving his NTC… but I would take that any day over him leaving.
no it would not.

Thanks Simon.
You were a team guy. You were a Fan Favorite. You busted it on offense and defense. You threw down when you had to and you always had your team mates back.
You were a Philadelphia Flyer in every sense of the word and no matter what sweater you may put on next, you will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.
Always.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

I would be ok with Gagne going to LA, this way he doesn’t stick it to us.

5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Maybe it’s because I have 2nd teams, but I’ve never felt something like that was dumb at all. And mine just so happens to be the Ducks in the West, and when the Flyers are not in playoff contention (or eliminated from the playoffs), the Canes are by 2nd team in the East (okay, it was mostly because I was a huge Brind’Amour fan, but I still root for them in such situations and will probably continue to do so, even if it is apparent their fans don’t like us very much).
That being out of the way, I would have no problem trading him to LA. They have a good, young team with some real nice prospects, and from the look of things, a nice future of contending in the Western Conference for years to come. Not to mention they might get Kovalchuk.
Chris Pronger stole my last signature.
If this really is the end, thank you, Simon. You’ve been through a real roller coaster of a decade+ in Philadelphia… the 5OT game, Lindros, more Lindros, the end of Lindros, that 2004 run, the lockout, Forsberg, the worst year in franchise history and in the fourth trip to the Eastern Conference Finals of your career, finally a trip to the Stanley Cup Final. It didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to, but most of us wanted to see you raise the Stanley Cup more than any other player on this roster. Hopefully you get that opportunity sooner rather than later.
As the longest tenured athlete in Philadelphia (along with David Akers), it’s nearly incomprehensible to try and picture you wearing something other than that flying P — I admit, I am trying to hold back tears writing this (and failing somewhat). I look forward to seeing your name raised in the Wells Fargo Center (or whatever it’s called in 15 years) as a member of the Flyers Hall of Fame. We will be rooting for you wherever you are playing next year (we all hope it’s the same place you’ve played for your entire NHL career, but…), and quite frankly, if you are with a different organization, I hope you are able to not only start the game so your name can be announced but that you can score a goal at the Wachovia Well’s Fargo Center some day. And I think many of us hope we are there for that. You will always be considered a Flyer, no matter what happens this offseason. Always.

if he does get traded…and I hear one boo towards him…i’ll be pissed. He should be nothing but welcome in Philly for the things he has done. Sad stuff. One of my favs and a pillar of the team. Hope he gets to go somewhere good and where he is happy playing. Bah, just sad stuff.

Yeah, but this is 08 all over again, right? Umberger tore it up in the ESF, gets traded, and is still loved here. Gagne’s going to get the same, if not more. But if they don’t get anything good back, I’ll lose my mind.

yeah I kind of turned sour on Turdco for saying no already to our offer…lowball as it may have been, he didn’t do anything to deserve better + upgrading from Dallas to Philly should of been some incentive. Hope for Bernier or Quick and ……(name goes here + draft picks, etc.) Only way I’ll be satisfied with this transaction happening.
Do Flyers fans some justice letting Gags go, Homer! (please!)

True but didn’t Jim Thome a couple weeks ago get a heroes welcome at CBP? I didn’t see it, I heard about it the next day on the radio and the radio hosts were pissed because they thought the fans went overboard with it and if Thome got a heroes welcome then I don’t see why they would boo Gagne.
Yes. Even when he hit a 3-Run Homer (in that disastrous 9th inning) he was treated as if he was still wearing red pinstripes
"Can Geico really save you 15% or more on your car insurance? Is Mike Green really a forward in defenseman's clothing"
Which is why I brought up the Umberger analogy… you’re not supposed to throw a hat if the opposing teams player scores a hat trick, but a lot of people did for Umberger when they thought he had gotten one. I realize it helped that it was a hat giveaway day, but I don’t think people would have even considered it if it hadn’t been RJ

Yeah, I was there at that game, and everybody around me was standing and applauding when he came up to the plate. As much as it sucked seeing the Phils lose, I’m glad I got to see him homer in person.
I know we will do the same for Gagne if he leaves. He is a legend in my eyes, most definitely in the top 10 greatest Flyers IMHO. I really do hope that even if he goes, he can come back and retire in the Orange and Black.

Simon Gagne is everything I love about hockey. He’s a true player who puts his hear into every game. He’s not dirty, he’s not cheap. He goes out there and works every shift, every game. If he gets traded. I’m gonna miss him. I’m probably going to end up buying a shirt of something with his name on it just so I can have something to remember him by as a Flyer…
Truly a sad day for the Flyers in terms of losing a great guy…
Another excellent read.
http://puckinvibes.wordpress.com/2010/07/02/the-definition-of-loyalty-simon-gagne/
Gagne would be a perfect fit in LA
I’d hate to lose Gagne, but the fact of the matter is a young team like LA would love to have a guy like Gagne to be there to teach the kids how to prepare for the playoffs. He could be huge for a playoff run and I would certainly understand why LA would take a chance on him despite his health issues. He could be to LA what Hossa was to Chicago, a veteran who knows how to win. The importance of experience cannot be understated.
I certainly hope Gagne would bring us Quick or Bernier instead of freeing up space for Turco.
If it happens, it will be sad, but best wishes to Simon. THANKS, SIMON!
I hate that the Flyers are going to trade away such a great player, but the cap numbers just didn’t add up and the team had to shed salary somewhere. I just hope the deal is good for Philly and Gagne enjoys a good career for whichever team he goes to. Very bad news … but hopeful that some good will eventually come of it.
Can anyone tell me where this insane Gagne, Carter, and either Hartnell, Carle, Carcillo or Meszaros to the Kings for Bernier, Brown, and Simmonds or picks rumor came from?

He agreed to waive it? I was afraid this would happen, but he is truly a team player and I know he loves this organization and will do whatever it takes for them to win. If he does get traded, I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes. I hope he can get that 50 goal season he’s capable of, and play well. And hopefully he can come back someday so he can retire with us. Even better if we get him for a playoff run and he can hoist the cup for us. That would be an amazing moment. I’m just fantasizing about what could be, but I really hope whatever happens it will pan out for the better.
A question. If he waives his NTC, is it gone for the remainder of his contract (in his case the rest of the season)? Or is it only temporary. And can it be re-instated by him at some point? May be a dumb question but I was just wondering if he waives it’s for good. Because that makes me afraid that if he doesn’t get traded now, he may in the middle of the season and I’m afraid what that will do to the locker room.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Maybe he’ll only be gone for one season.
Maybe next summer he’ll take the “hometown discount” and come back.
Maybe that’s how Homer got him to agree?
Part of me is hopeful that by this time next year, we will welcome him back. Hell, Recchi came back. Renberg came back. Tocchet came back. Berube came back. Yushkevich came back. Hell, even Karl Dykhuis came back. Why can’t Simon?
We love you, Simon. You were the consummate Philadelphia athlete – talented, tough, and fearless, yet graceful, unassuming, and unselfish. You came to work every day, and you left every night as silently as you came in. (I notice you were never in any of those “Flyer night life” pictures, for example.) But in between, you gave us all plenty to cheer about, plenty to hope for, and plenty of reasons to love you.
Please come back next summer if you can. We’ll leave a place for you at the table.
I hope they announce when he actually leaves town. We fans should have a sendoff for him like Ryan Smyth got in Edmonton.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

"Good night. Good hockey."
A short story: I became a Flyers fan while watching the 2004 playoff run. I admired with the effort and determination they put forth in those games. One scene specifically was Sami Kapanen struggling to get off the ice because somehow he managed to keep the team in his head, even if he couldn’t see straight.
I loved the heart those players showed; ergo the Flyers won my heart. I think most people first associate emotionally with players, and the team as a result. Hell, I still follow Umberger’s and Upshall’s careers pretty closely.
Simon Gagne will always be a Flyer, no matter what jersey he wears. But in an ideal world he would be wearing the Orange and Black when we hoist the Cup. Without him it would feel like a true injustice to someone who has given us and his team so much.

would you say that if Flyers got Bernier or simmonds for Gagne and then signed Nabby?
by historywillbemade on Jul 3, 2010 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions
If the reports are true that theyre trading him so they can sign Turco, Powe, and Carbomb does that really make this team better. To me it seems the team would look like the Bruins of last year: doesnt allow goals but doesnt score any either. I cant see the flyers with a top line of richards/carter/carcillo being able to score enough to win the cup no matter how well the D plays. Someone tell me im wrong please
please nabby instead of Turco! Or if it’s Turco I hope we get Bernier in the Gagne trade. Ideal situation is Simmonds for Gagne, Sign Nabby, resign Powe and Carcillo, waive cote and Boosh. Lines are then:
Simmonds /Richards/Carter
Hartnell-Briere-Leino
JVR-Giroux-carcillo/powe
Lappy-Betts-powe/carcillo/ shelley
d
Pronger-Carle
Timonen-coburn/meszaros
Odonnel-meszaros/coburn

I'm seriously heartbroken.
Hence why I say my farewell to all of you. Not permanently, but I am simply not in a shape to handle any sort of speculations and comments I’m reading here. With Simon leaving this team, huge part of my Flyers dedication is leaving too. It is sad, but true. I won’t be able to cheer on this team as much as I would Simon had stayed. Not even half as much. I don’t root for the Flyers simply because of Simon. I always liked them and thought they were a great team. But the truth is that Simon is a huge reason why I am so passionate about them. Not the only one, but a big one. He really got under my skin. When I’m watching a game I will tell you he’s on the ice the second he steps on it. I would recognize him without a number on his jersey and even on the smallest screen. When he’s on the ice, I barely watch anyone else. Yes, of course there are other guys I love on the Flyers, I love the whole organization. But my feelings for Simon are deep ones.

For those of you who don’t quite get this, imagine what would happen if the Phils were about to trade Utley in 2013 (which is I believe the year before free agency for him). There would be multiple people around the country (world? although more likely Latin America than Europe) who would immediately stop being Phils fans.
I feel your pain Katchis, even though I root for the laundry.

I get it but I don’t. I understand your analogy Bud, I would imagine that most of Philly would revolt if they the team traded away Utley, I myself would be pissed but I would get over it. The Flyers traded away my favorite player, Brindamour not that long ago, and then he went on to win a Cup in Carolina. The Phillies let my favorite player Pat Burrell walk away only to replace him with an over paid bum, and just recently the Eagles traded away my favorite player…no not McNabb but Sheldon Brown. In all three cases it sucked, it was upsetting but I never considered rooting for someone else. These are my teams, the players come and go but the team, the team stays, most of the time anyway.
I am not trying to dismiss Katerina’s feelings, I am trying to understand them, and at this point I don’t. It’s never fun to lose a fan and I have rather enjoyed Katerina’s time on these boards, it would be a shame to lose that because this team trades one player.

Oh well… I’ve never said I’m no longer a Flyers fan. It will be just that my passion won’t be that noticeable as it used to be. But I will still wear my Flyers jerseys (w/ Gagne on the back :() with proper pride.
And I also never said that I won’t ever join these boards again. I said it wasn’t permanent. At this point, I am just very VERY sad and I’m trying my best to deal with this somehow. I said my good byes because reading all these speculations and discussions about what we might get for Simon and see how some people are excited over it, that all is just too painful. And it feels like someone was pouring a salt on an open wound.

Let’s look at all of those deals though. Letting Pat Burrell go was the right move, and it isn’t debatable. Raul carried the team for 3 months and Pat was terrible in TB, Sheldon wasn’t happy with his contract and we weren’t going to give him another one so we had to trade him really, Brindy had some rumors swirling about Lindros banging his wife and Primeau was a great player and our team Captain.
I know as fans we become attached, but Gagne is worth more to us than he really is on the ice. He is injury prone and he was not that productive last year until the Boston series. We need cap room, he is a UFA at the end of the year and we can get something for him rather than nothing. This trade makes sense if we get something good back.
One more thing. This notion that the Kings are going to give up Brown or Simmonds needs to stop. Both are probably as good as Gagne. Brown is probably better and they are cheaper and aren’t UFA at the end of the year. Why in God’s name would they give up a winger when that is what they need to acquire?
The reaction to Gagne’s return in a trade is going to be the most irrationally stupid rambling you will ever see on this board, he isn’t that valuable of a trade asset.
Formerly... "You don't have to be sweet, to be good"
SIMON GAGNE WILL BE BACK
Before it’s all said and done for his career, he will be back. And im not talking about signing a one day contract to retire as a Flyer.
He will play at least one more season for the flyers before he’s done. Despite his injury history I believe he still has 3-5 years left. At some point he will resign here at a reasonable price and play 3rd wing or something.
I’m sad to hear he will probably go.
But believe me, he hasnt played his last game as a Flyer.
And oh my what a night it will be at the Wells-Wach Center for Simon Gagne’s first home game as a Flyer once again.

I agree. I listed this above in my “players who left and came back” post.
Even Chris Therien came back to play one more year. Remember, he was the longest-tenured Philadelphia athlete at the time of his trade. We shipped him to Dallas at the 2004 deadline. Then, after the lockout ended and we started signing free agents, Therien was one of them. So players can leave and come back in the Salary Cap era… it is possible.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I wouldn’t mind if we loan him out for a year and sign him back with a hometown discount at the end of next season. Hopefully we’ll be able to make some amends for him by having a banner raising ready for his return to the Flyers home opener.

After sleeping on this, I don’t think I want Bernier coming back, should this deal take place with the Kings. The Flyers have a few of goalie prospects (Backlund, Bobrovsky, Eriksson) who are just as promising (and basically just as unproven at the NHL level). I agree with Todd that Homer’s probably going after a first round pick and a prospect (and maybe another later round pick, too?). And I don’t think that’s a mistake, even if you’re signing Turco. Remember that signing one of Nabokov, Turco, Mason, Ellis was just going to be as a stopgap until one of Backlund or Bobrovsky was ready, and trading Simon doesn’t change the fact that those two appear close to being ready.
Considering what Mason and Ellis accepted on the market, Turco or Nabby could easily be signed for 2 years/$2M per.

Grading the 2010 Flyers: Simon Gagne
You're living in a parallel universe. Do not attempt angle parking.
January 11, 1976
This is THE TRADE
The Trade That Needs to Happen.
Simon Gagne + JVR for Dustin Brown + Wayne Simmonds
Dustin Brown’s Contract He signed a 6 year deal, in 2007 for 19 mil. not bad at all. that means Like 3.3 mil for the next 3 years. That difference btwn Dustin Brown and Gagne’ contract should net us a goalie. JVR and Simmonds contracts are about washes.
Which means if we traded Gagne and JVR for Dustin Brown and Simmonds. That would get us two right wingers. Brown for the Carter-Richards-Brown line. And for the third line Powe-Giroux-Simmonds.
Simmonds is more proven and ready to win now than JVR, but JVR ceiling is higher (maybe?) so there’s incentive for the Kings. And apparently Gagne is a good fit for them or so thats what Ive heard.
And the Flyers would have room to give Nabby or Turco a contract. Probably would have to wait Carcillo, but I think we should do that anyways. And we need Powe to play 3rd line wing and we should be able to sign him especially if we waive Carcillo.
