I was going to comment on this yesterday but Boruk’s article about Simon makes me want to go on a murderous rampage with my only targets being Holmgren and Snider.
The article makes me sad. And I don’t like being sad.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

That Boruk article was the nail in the coffin for me; I tried to hold up because I couldn’t be sure how Simon felt and I didn’t get to hear all the press conferences yesterday, so I kept telling myself it might not be that bad for him. But then I read that, and my heart cracked into pieces.

Yeah. Hopefully it’s speculation rather than Gagne’s words. If Homer leaves, maybe he could come back.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I don’t think so… I get a bad impression, and not just from Boruk. If you look at the actual Flyers’ website, the way it talks about Simon leaving and the articles with Homer’s reaction to the trade give a very weird vibe. I ran it by other people in the house too, to make sure they got the same impression, and everybody just said it all seems off. Obviously it’s not like we were expecting a big “you will be missed” banner because it’s a business decision, but the way the articles mention him leaving just gives a vibe I’m not sure I can articulate. Kind of like how I didn’t like the vibe I got during the playoffs when Homer kept pronouncing Simon like “Simon Says”. Something’s off but I don’t know what.

I think you’re reading way too much into it. People have this idea that the Flyers is this big family, and maybe for the players from the 70’s that’s how it is, but this is a completely different era.
Players are going to come and go, and there just aren’t going to be a players who stay one place their entire careers. Look at what’s happening with Dallas and Modano. Look at Brett Favre.
It’s not like these people talk this stuff out face to face, everything goes through intermediaries.
The last few years, as the pressures of the cap have increased, discussion and analysis of the business side of the sport is at an all time high, and the Hockey IQ of the average fan has increased due to blogs and the internet and twitter, a lot of the old time courtesies are falling by the wayside.
I’m in no way surprised about how this occurred, as anyone who was paying attention during the Upshall trade would know that the days of the Flyers organization being known for its high class approach to things died long ago, probably around the time of the Lindros/Clark media feuds.
I mean when a young popular and talented player finds out he’s been traded at the deadline from an east coast cup contending team to a last place west coast one that is on the cusp of bankruptcy from a reporter rather than the organization itself, that pretty much speaks to a lack of consideration for the player.
I do take Gagne at his word, when he says that he had a list of teams he would consider waiving hist NTC for, and also that he was not interested in going to Los Angeles. None of us were aware of this. There is no doubt that Homer painted himself into a corner, but it’s also quite possible that Gags limited the Flyers’s options and made it even more difficult for Homer to get any value out of the trade.
I don’t blame Gags for being sore, because it’s clear that early on, the Flyers front office decided to move him. Ultimately, very few of us agree that we don’t have a problem with wings, but none of us are privy to the discussions they’ve had, and plans for how the offense is going to be organized. I guess if they plan on moving Carter to wing this year, and Carter is bought into the plan, or if Giroux is going to wing, then there’s less of a wing issue than we thought. We just have no way of knowing, just as we have no way of knowing that there might be more moves coming, or that Gags really did flex his NTC.
And Bettman is an even bigger idiot for setting up a system that allows Lamoriello to cheat and look like a genius.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
Still give him credit. I was saying Kovie’s cap hit was gonna be a lot less than everyone was talking about. Ripping on the devils about an $8mil per cap hit. Granted if Kovie’s production tails off a lot and he doesn’t want to retire, it will bite them, but I don’t see that happening. That was a great contract that takes advantage of a flawed system.
His hit is less than Briere’s and it’s the same as Elias’s…that’s pretty darn good.
Bettman is an idiot, yes, but he the PA still has to agree to the CBA. The fact that there are loopholes is not necessarily one party’s fault more than the other, if the PA had read and interpreted the full CBA (Which I am sure they had done) then they had to be aware of at least the possibility of this kind of contract deal.
I don’t think it’s a loophole at all. It was a decision likely pushed by a combination of NHLPA and bigger teams.

Exactly it’s not like all teams wanted a salary cap. You can bet that the large market teams like the Flyers didn’t want a cap so when negotiations came around they helped design a system that would have a way to pay big bucks to their stars and get around the problem of a cap itself

Lamoriello was the major architect of the CBA.
His Kovalchuk deal is like what you risk happening when you hire a primo hacker to design your network’s security system. Who knows better how to get around the obstacles and through the loopholes? Maybe he left a trapdoor in the system in case he wanted it.
Anyway, Gary and Bill were never going to make a fuss about anyting Uncle Lou does.

Lamiorello comments on the Kovalchuk signing...
Lou Lamoriello admits Kovalchuk contract shouldn’t be part of NHL
While saying the Devils did nothing illegal in signing Ilya Kovalchuk to a 17-year, $102 million contract, general manager Lou Lamoriello admitted that such a deal was bad for the NHL and should be eliminated in the next CBA.
I asked Lamoriello what he would think if someone brought up Kovalchuk’s contract in the next round of CBA negotiations (in two years) and pointed to it as a flaw.
"I might agree," he said. "But there is nothing that we have done wrong. This is within the rules. This is in the CBA. There are precedents that have been set. But I would agree we shouldn’t have these. But I’m also saying that because it’s legal and this is something that ownership felt comfortable doing for the right reasons."
It was clear that ownership—headed by Jeff Vanderbeek—was behind this particular contract, but not the idea of re-signing Kovalalchuk.
Lamoriello said he "absolutely" rolled his eyes when the Islanders signed Rick DiPietro to a 15-year contract in 2006 and when Washington signed Alex Ovechkin to a 13-year contract in 2008. He also said he "absolutely" rolled his eyes about the Kovalchuk’s contract terms.
So why would he sign Kovalchuk to such a deal?.
"You’d have to speak to ownership about that," Lamoriello said. "The commitment that ownership has made here. This is a commitment and a decision they wanted to make for this type of a player and all I can do is say whether the player is a player that will fit into the team, can help the team and is not a risk as a player. As far as what the financial commitment is and that aspect of it, that was out of my hands."
by TopShelfTony on Jul 20, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Dude’s cold-blooded. He’s basically saying that it’s a stupid loophole that shouldn’t be in the CBA, but while it is, he’ll use it. Rational and calculating…does that make him the anti-Homer? ;)
Honor is no substitute for victory.
And he never seems to say/do anything without thnking about 25 moves ahead. I doubt this is a case of “I got mine now I’ll see to it nobody else gets theirs.” either. There’s more to it than that. We’ll need to watch carefully from now until the new CBA is signed.
I also love the way he distances himself: “He also said he ‘absolutely’ rolled his eyes about the Kovalchuk’s contract terms.” So why would he sign Kovalchuk to such a deal?. "You’d have to speak to ownership about that…As far as what the financial commitment is and that aspect of it, that was out of my hands." Slick.
Neat and complete. Just following orders.

I like Ray Shero. He didn’t fuck it up but really having five top five drafts picks, two number ones, and the fortune of a ping pong lottery ball helped his success out. We will see how he adapts to team success and managing that cap. Really he made some major blunders last year with the defense and it showed when it came to the playoffs.

Not to be all Rush Limbaugh over here, but part of me hopes that the Flyers fail miserably this year.
It will suck worse than anything, but it will be the only way in which Homer will lose his job.
He did a great job between 2006-07 and 2007-08. Since then, he’s found a plethora of new and interesting ways to fuck up this team six ways to Sunday.
Now I’m starting to agree with MarioD’s old comment that “The future of this team is in a precipitous fall.”
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
That’s because he was unpleasant.
I never had an issue with his negative outlook of the team, even if it was a little extreme at times. Being a Philadelphia sports fan means being negative, at least to some extent.
But he was incapable of having civilized disagreements with people. Anyone who disagreed with him or saw things differently was “wrong” at best and an “idiot” at worst.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I agree, he was the reason it took me so long to start posting. I was just trying to be funny…I should have learned by now that I’m not though.

Also…Homer went into the off season looking to improve in two areas: Defense and Size….
Ok Defense…yes Homer improved on defense…when your 3rd pairing is a combination of Kraji, Bartulis Syvret and Parent then you could in theory get just about anyone you want and improve the pairing. Especially when you have 10 million to spend. I don’t see the point in congratulating or giving props to someone for doing something that I could have done. Except, I wouldn’t have wasted over half of my cap space on a THIRD F*CKING DEFENSIVE pairing. Here’s a tip…best way to improve your defense…and I know this is a crazy revolutionary idea that Homer probably has never thought of, but the absolute best way to improve your defense is to FIND A STARTING GOALTENDER!!!! And guess what? Instead of signing or trading for two defensemen, you can just sign one goalie and bam, situation improved.
Secondly…size…why? Why do we need to get bigger? The Flyers didn’t lose any games because they weren’t big enough to out muscle people. They lost games because their goaltending was suspect, their top 4 defensemen were tired from having to play is if there was no third pairing and we didn’t have enough scoring depth.
But it’s cool, let’s trade one of our best defensive forwards for a pylon and a 4th round pick that we will trade to someone else and add a forward who spent the last two years in Russia learning how to continue to not play any defense. And yet we improved our defensive situation?
We added a goon in Shelley…now mind you, in a vacuum that signing isn’t so bad, but when you factor in that they brought back Carcillo then yes it is in fact a bad signing. We don’t need both. This team doesn’t need more fighters, it has enough guys that will drop the gloves already…Lappy, Hartnell, Richie, Carcillo or Shelley are enough, not both. Maybe Homer’s thinking is to start one of his 8 defensemen at wing on the 4th line…grasping at straws here…I am desperately trying to pretend like Homer isn’t a complete and utter buffoon. I mean seriously…how is this going to work? Can Walker be sent to the AHL or will he just be a healthy scratch every game? Basically, is he the defensive version of Riley Cote? Honestly…Walker would make sense if we never signed O’Donnell(also a signing that in a vacuum I like.)
What is incredible…what truly is amazing about all of this is that Homer had 10 mil to spend, a few positions to fill, a few raises to hand out and yet he still managed to F it up to the point that he had to trade Gagne. Andy Reid still can’t manage a clock and Homer still can’t manage a salary cap…how do either of these two keep their jobs?
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
I will ask him that…right after I ask him what it’s like to be a rookie GM who absolutely fleeced Homer twice in the span of a few weeks.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
I think Bud in TN is going to post it at some point. It was really good. Two things I took out of it.
1) When asked if he was looking to add grit and toughness now, he referred to St. Louis as the kind of tough they were looking for
2) The timing of the deal with the Kovie signing was a complete coincidence. Kovie had no impact on the trade (meaning the Kings were never an option)
Sure but neither of those things impacted the fact that Homer got served by Stevie Y twice in a row, and both times because of Homer’s own incompetence.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
Oh I know.
1) Is how I wish the Flyers would start approaching the game philosophically
2) I think Homer wanted Walker, or as I like to refer to him as O’Donnell junior, and that’s a scary freaking thought.
This basically address with I think Homer has gone overboard on D, and has let size play way too big of a role in his off season.
I’m also scared that he really meant his comments about not needing to make any more moves and being happy if this is the team he has at the start of camp.
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I can’t find this online right now. I’m hoping Travis/Geoff/Ben R can, and provide a link.
It is well worth a discussion
Three other points:
(1) The trade discussion started at the draft
(2) Kovie signing was purely coincidental
(3) When asked about signing Francophone players, Yzerman said “I’m not interested in that, it’s more like I was interested in signing a Philadelphia Flyer player”. Cue dagger to heart.
Yes I am old. I remember the Phils good old days and their bad old days. Course, the good old days I'm thinking of were in 2009.
Homer's Epics: An Odyssey for the Salary Cap, The Quest For the Goalie Grail
Of course the Nashville blog thinks “it’s pathetic to see the big-market teams driving truckloads of cash through this loophole.” How many artificial mechanisms to you need to impose on spending until you can claim complete parity? It doesn’t ruin the competitive balance of the league to allow the teams that subsidize your franchise (this is just an insult, Chris Burton, don’t take it literally) to sink large chunks of money into a player. Often, as is the case with, say, Briere, teams end up regretting these contracts because they implicitly require that a large amount of money be paid up front (even when production is not there) and that these contracts last forever. Name the last 10+ year contract that worked out swimmingly for all parties involved? Why don’t you ask “big-market” Long Island how these things usually pan out?
My point: 17 years is an eternity with a personality like Kovy’s. Lou didn’t want to give him this money; these contracts are more of a boon to players than franchises, because they will get paid forever. So, when you come down to it, neither the owners nor the NHLPA would have much interest in changing the CBA as drastically as Dirk suggests. Quit your whining or we’ll sic Balsillie on you.
Some large typos in there, and a whole lotta rhetorical questioning. It’s hard to rant in between emails at work.
I do like the suggestion of the 50% rule they suggest, though – the lowest year of the contract must be at least 50% the highest year. It would reduce the signings that are pretty clearly intended to circumvent the cap limits (including our contract with Pronger), and make things less ridiculous in the long run.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
But why? That’s just as arbitrary as the rule currently in place, except that it further handcuffs the most profitable franchises. It’s asking for further compromise from franchises that are perfectly happy the happy things are.
I see absolutely no problem with these contracts. The risks is almost entirely on the franchises that draw up the terms. The escrow costs is almost entirely on those who don’t have these contracts. I have a problem with neither.
The ones that are perfectly happy with the way things are are the ones that can game the system. I’m sure Lehman Brothers was perfectly happy with the lack of regulation in the financial market as well. It’s a matter of finding ways that are fair to the teams (all the teams) as well as the players (all the players). The way the system is now, I agree that it doesn’t harm the teams, although it removes some of them from the chase for the top free agents. It does harm the players who don’t get those sort of contracts, though, passing on the “cost” of the contract to those players. That’s also due to how the escrow component is written, but making contracts less of a game and having more of a consequence to teams strikes me as a good thing. On further thought, a flat 50% probably wouldn’t work, since for a lesser player, it would mean your salaries could only range from, say, $4m to $2m, but putting a lower limit on multi-year contracts would mean they’d need to be structured in a sensible manner; even just setting a limit of 25% of the peak year’s value would mitigate the biggest jokes – in the case of Pronger, the minimum would be $1.9m, while Kovie’s min would be $2.5m, instead of the $525k and $750k used to bring their cap hits down without reducing their frontload pay. The cap hit = salary portion would be going too far, but setting hard limits on how much the contract can be reduced, rather than a per-year adjustment amount, would limit the gaming of the system.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
“The system” is artificial! We created a salary cap game, and we created rules to it! There is no economic implosion to happen here; these transactions are fixed.
The salary cap already provides a balance to all teams. It’s not like these contracts completely undermine that system; they play completely within these set of rules. They aren’t circumventing anything. They aren’t gaming anything. To impose further restrictions targeted specifically at teams able to pay for these contracts certainly seems like it would violate competition laws, should any owners care to take issue. They agreed to a salary cap to reduce spending, but why would they agree to something that controls their freedom to spend?
The strongest argument for this is that it hurts other players via skipping out on escrow at the end of their contracts. This assumes two things: 1) That players will retire early just because compensation is below a certain level. But, it doesn’t seem obvious that Hossa will retire from a game he’s played his entire life at 40 just because his contract was front-loaded. 2) That the players hurt from these contracts would sacrifice their freedom to sign to these type of terms in the future, in order to save their money now. But, if we’ve learned anything from blue-collar Republicans opposing a highly progressive tax rate, it is that people will irrationally protect the potential for inflate future earnings.
Why are we aiming for a league in which parity is the determining value of the contract structure? That was never the point of the salary cap. Like emancipation, it was a happy side effect.
More bad news....kinda?

Where’d you hear that? If it ain’t on Capgeek, it ain’t true :)
But Anaheim only has 5 NHL defensemen on their roster, so one of (or both) Syvret and Sbisa should get minutes with the big-boy club.
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
why has nobody in the media in this city called Holmgren on this B.S. (besides you guys)?? By this point we all know the moves he made, and even why he made them (defense and size, i guess…?). I have yet to see one piece in the philly media that asks what the hell he was thinking, and points out the glaring awfulness that we in Flyers-fan world are screaming about.
p.s.-maybe hiring someone to be GM of your team just because they used to play on that team…isn’t the best business decision. Just a thought.
Online I have seen several comments on his “decisions”. Nothing yet in old school media. But many of those guys wait until the team is more “set” before going into detail.

Most of them are news people as opposed to opinion. It’s a conversation we’ve had many times, especially with Sarah Baicker and Anthony SanFilippo. Now that both have blogs, I wonder if Sarah will start having more opinion on hers. Anthony usually lets a sentence or two of opinion into his blog posts,
Plus, you have to think a) some people (probably half) either disagree that Homer’s doing a bad job or aren’t big enough hockey fans to understand that he is doing a bad job; and b) they don’t want to sound (or actually be) writing from a place of emotional attachment to Gagne.

Homer better pray Carter works out at wing
because with our winger situation already relying on Carcillo, Shelley, and Powe playing regularly, if Carter doesnt work out the very delicate wing position depth is effed. And oh another one of our wingers is a bit of a risk in Zerdhev.
im glad homer feels comfortable with this team as it is.

not that it means anything, obviously things change by training camp, throughout the year, etc, but in the zherdev article on the flyers website it said that “he’ll get to play along side one of the 3 talented centers on the team: richards, briere, carter” which, according to the article, would put giroux on the wing. but its just an offseason article and all, so who knows if that’s what theyre really thinking.
I think that’s correct. Most people on here would like to keep Giroux at center, but I think the Flyers are set on keeping Carter there. But who knows, we’ll see.
sweet. we get to play a 3rd liner 5 mil a year with a raise coming.

Richards might be the “3rd” line.
BUT the Flyers don’t have a true 3rd line b/c they constantly try to convince themselves they have 3 legit scoring lines even though they have Carbomb and/or Asham floating around on one or two of those 3 lines. My guess is the “3rd” line will change from night to night, whatever line is hot will get more ice time.

Oh and as a scary side note…if Homer really is comfortable with the roster as it stands…Cote is still on the roster and would be the 13th forward. Wahooooooooo
i cant argue with these lines only why are people so married to the second line. granted they had a great playoff run. but things will change.
by fitzy first on Jul 20, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not married to it, just figured that’s how they’ll go in to the season, then address from there. Also, None of the top 3 lines are true #1 lines, nor are any of them true #3 lines. You basically have 3 2nd line scoring lines. So any of those lines could be 1, 2, or 3.
that remains to be seen… i think we def. have potential legitimate first liners… obviously they’re all centers… leino could be a real gem, like the next hejduk r something. zherdev is a first liner for sure… only they’re both RWers… maybe homer is dyslectic?
by fitzy first on Jul 20, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Well the way I have the lines, it has already been seen, none of those lines are legit #1 scoring lines. One has Carcillo, the other had a good playoff run but isn’t proven, and the other has a kid trying to rebound from hitting the wall in his 1st NHL season.
But I do agree, we have the talent there for a legit #1 line, but the organization loves to spread it around to make 3 scoring lines, and as you mentioned, a lot of those guys are centers.
the 3 scoring lines are there… even without #12… sigh
jvr will be better and giroux is the next superstar…
Hence why I said
You basically have 3 2nd line scoring lines
My thing is, you don’t have a true #1.
Also, I’m not in to counting chickens before they are hatched. I hope JVR will be better, but he could end up worse or the same. I think Giroux will be a stud, but depending how the Flyers use him, and the minutes he gets, he may continue to have his production level stunted by his role.
3 2nd lines…??? doesnt make any sense to me. are you saying the three lines have the same consistency. well, i have to disagree. there is no question we have a legitimate first line whether its brieres line with leino or richards with carter with zherdev, any of those players would be first liners on most any other team. look at upshaw for instance, was a third liner here and now a first liner for the dogs… what does that tell you, any team would chew their right arm off for the talent the Flyers have on their roster
yes – giroux’s role needs to change for more success. he needs to overachieve especially going into a contract year. we can not lose a player like him to free agency
Richards with Carter and Zherdev would be a legit 1st line, I agree. However, that’s not a line I see them running (maybe a PP line, but not a normal shift). What I am saying is, we have 1st line talent, but that 1st line talent is split between 3 lines. Harts, Briere, and Leino to me is a 2nd Line. Carcillo, Richards and Zherdev, to me, is a 2nd line. JVR, Carter, and Giroux, to me, is a 2nd line. So even though we have 1st line talent spread in to 3 different lines, none of those 3 lines is a true #1 scoring line (right now at least, I’m not Nostradamus). I’m not saying they aren’t strong lines, actually I am saying they are strong lines, they just all fall into a 2nd scoring line category to me.
Hope this clarifies my thought.
Um, three so-called ‘2nd’ lines is a whole mess better than one ‘1st’ line! Wouldn’t you rather have a scoring threat on the ice 50 out of 60 minutes, instead of 18 minutes or less? Is there a benefit to having scoring parity if the opponent has a ‘top pairing’ on defense? And lastly, is there some other team that figured out this equation and won the Cup with it (give you a hint, they play at the other end of the state)?
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
No
1) I want two true scoring lines and 2 nasty defensive agitating lines. Like how Burke builds his teams (see that Ducks team that won the cup). I want a true #1 scoring line and a true #2 scoring line. Some people prefer 3 distributed scoring lines, I do not. So again no, I would not agree with that, b/c I’m not saying I just want 1 line that score, then 3 other garbage lines. Sorry if I confused you by saying we don’t have a true #1 scoring line, I by no means meant I only want 1 scoring line, rather a true #1 and true #2 scoring line.
2) the Penguins most certainly did not have 3 scoring lines when they won the cup. they did a lot of combining their talent on to 2 lines though during the playoffs
I want 3 lines that can score with one of those that can play a checking role that can face other teams top lines. the Richards, gagne, and carcillo line meets the description of both a defensive and offensive line. Richards is basically the Flyer’s Stall/ Datsyuk.
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Too bad we don’t have that Gagne guy anymore.
It’s a philosophy thing. I’ve always been a fan of the 2 and 2. With the 3rd line having a little less scoring capability than the Flyers 3rd line, but the 1st line having a little more scoring ability than the Flyers top producing line.
I’m fine with differing on the philosophy. That’s an opinion thing. My was formed based on the style the teams I played on played growing up.
I definitely see your point, but when a team with three semi-scoring lines plays a team with two scoring and two defensive lines, I give the advantage to the three-line team. And while the Pens scoring was CONCENTRATED on the top two lines (Crosby’s and Malkin’s) and they did indeed condense them for the playoffs, you could never discount Staal’s line as being merely ‘defensive’. Same idea would apply (or would have before Gagne’s departure) if Richie played the ‘third’ line here – defensively sound, but definitely a significant scoring threat.
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
Well, Staal’s line during that run is fairly representative of a traditional 3rd line in the top 2 bottom 2 philosophy in my mind. None of those 3rd lines can be considered purely defensive, but are also not counted on to score. They will be, in general, less productive than the Flyers 3rd line, but tougher to play against. This does not mean they don’t score obviously.
I think you would agree Gagne, Richards, Carcillo has more offensive talent than Staal, Cooke, and whoever (Dupuis maybe). Staal’s line there, in my mind is more typical of a 3rd line in a top 2 bottom 2 than in a 3 scoring line system. I’m sure you went in to that series thinking the Flyers had more scoring depth with their top 3 lines.
I don’t mind 3 scoring lines, I prefer the other system. I just get bugged by the Flyers never having 3 true scoring lines b/c they are always dressing guys like Carcillo and Asham on those lines, who belong more on the 3rd line pest role in a top 2 bottom 2 system.
I disagree with the Pens analogy still, I feel that’s more representative of what i prefer, than what you prefer.
I absolutely agree that Gagne-Richards-Carcillo has more scoring potential than Cooke-Staal-Dupuis. In the Cup year, Staal had 22 goals and 27 assists, Cooke 13 and 18, Dupuis 12 and 16. Definitely more points overall than a ‘defensive’ line would be expected to produce – more than a goal every other night. Comparatively, Richie had 31 goals and 31 assists last season, Gags 17 and 23 in a shortened campaign, and Carcillo 12 and 10. That’s much closer to a goal a night – and frankly, the perfect defense of my argument for rolling three lines!
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
It’s a philosophy, we can argue that til the cows come home, but at the end of the day, it’s an opinion neither on is absolutely right or wrong. But it hasn’t worked for the Flyers yet, and in a salary cap era, it is very difficult to roll 3 effective scoring lines. And I’m not seeing the perfect defense of your argument since Gags was a victim of the salary cap and is no longer on the team.
For the Penguins, Staal is an obvious upgrade to what a traditional 3rd line would role out. I’m curious, do you now how many of those points came when they would run 2 scoring lines when they are behind with Staal up on one of them? Unfortunately I don’t, but I would guess he scored some there. They will double shift Crosby and Malkin a ton, giving Staal time with those guys. I can’t break down his scoring by line mates though. But I would agree, he is an upgrade to a tradition 3rd line. Comparing those 3 from the Pens to Pahlsson, Marchant, and Moen of the Ducks in ‘06, it resulted in 0.29 points per game more. But again, I can’t say for sure who was on the ice when the points were tallied.
At what point in the season? At the outset, I would have called Carter’s line the ‘top’ line. In the playoffs, the ‘top’ line was obviously Briere’s. Richards’ line was consistently good, but I don’t know which I would call the real first line.
And surely, goals and assists come on the PP and SH as well – it’s a rough argument to make without very detailed stats.
The point is very well taken that Gagne becoming a salary cap victim doesn’t follow the philosophy I espouse. Me, I always argued for Carter being the one packing – for just that very reason.
But yes – I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on which theory is better. Although I WAS thinking steak for dinner …
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
I like your lines minus the whole Carbomb with Richie and Zherdev thing but nothing we can do about that. That Carter line might be really good. I also believe Giroux will be on the wing.
It’s tough to think about. And it’s too early to know. I’m not big on line speculation obviously, but this is what popped in to my head. The problem is, unless there are more moves coming, you have to fit Carcillo in somewhere in the top 3 lines. But meh…I’m really discouraged by this off season. I just read Katchis FanPost, and it brought up the fact that Gagne won’t be there for the EC Championship Banner, and that hadn’t hit me yet, and now I’m just kind of melancholic.
I legit just did exactly what I think everyone figures Homer is going to do. I put all the names on scrap pieces of paper and pulled them out of a hat putting the players in the positions that they normally play (besides Giroux as RW). Here are my results:

Jvr carter and zherdev would be a crazy line. No passing only shooting. The richards line would also be missing a finisher

so here’s how i see it:
Carter-richards-carbomb
hartnell-briere-leino
jvr-giroux-zherdev
lappy-betts-powe
shelley is the scratch but can play in powe’s spot when we play the rangers and leafs
Now if we are down late in the game expect to see Giroux take carbomb’s place on 1st line
They could go with :
Carter-Richards-Zherdev
hbl
JVR-Giroux-Carbomb
which is basically switching zherdev for gagne and carbomb for asham. I don’t like this as much as i like the 1st lineup i posted

I agree I wouldn’t expect Carter to play nice with Zherdev. JVR-Giroux-Zherdev screams killer especially since they will get favorable matchups offensively and more importantly defensively. With the forward set-up we have. Who do you stick you top D pair against. And the PP should be even better with Mez manning the point on the second PP. Despite all the lackluster moves maybe by Homer we still have a lot to look forward to come fall. Especially if JVR returns to early season form and stays that way.
I am glad we got Mez for one reason and one reason alone. WE CAN FINALLY GET COBURN OFF THE PP UNIT BECAUSE HE CAN’T PUT A SHOT ON NET TO SAVE HIS LIFE!!!!!!

thats why id like Giroux with Zerdhev. Giroux’s vision feeding a sniper.
seems to me that let’s just say the 2nd lines stays the same. And if you want Richards and Carcillo together. If thats more of a third line than maybe put JVR there with Richards and Carcillo.
Then put Carter and Giroux and Zerdev together. 2 guys that are very questionable defensivley but Giroux is an animal. Although id think it’d be better if Giroux was the center of that line and not Carter. With Giroux’s vision feeding 2 pure goal scorers and being able to cover the most ice at center defensively.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions
i like the idea of JVR-Giroux-zherdev. JVR is strong on the puck and a big body that hopefully can channel his inner John LeClair, Giroux is the passer with great puck moving skills and vision, and Zherdev is the finisher that is also great with the puck on his stick. then you have Carter-Richards-Carcillo. richards makes the plays and battles, carbomb agitates and plays in the corners, Carter finds the sweet spot in the zone to unless his wicked wrist shot
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions
that is my first choice but im seriously worried they wont commit to Giroux at center where he belongs. Carter for his abilities is a better winger and Giroux is a better center, but who knows, the Flyers seem rather stubborn on all things Carter.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions
If they commit to Giroux and Briere at center, we’ll have this “no depth on the wings” problem for the next decade.
Well they have committed to Richards at center obviously. Let’s assume they commit to Briere as well. A sGrioux progress, his talent will need to move up the depth char,t presumably, off of the 3rd line. If you have Richards as your top line center, and Briere as your second line center, that means Giroux will be either your top line or second line RW.
Hypothetically of course.
except the part where Giroux’s skills make him a better center than wing. Giroux has the potential to be the best center on this team in a few years.
He is mike richards + better passing ability + better ice vision. Giroux has all the tools and makings of a great center. To put him on a wing isnt getting the most out of him
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ve said Grioux’s game lends itself to center as much as anyone else here, if not more. I’ve banged on that drum for a while, not sure why you are trying to convince me.
However, I’m also trying to look at the possible reality here, at least as it presents itself today. So, even though it’s not what you or I want, you might want to start looking at the hypothetical I presented as a real possibility moving forward.
He’s also younger and (probably) better able to adapt to the wing. His passing ability and ice vision can be an asset wherever he’s put.
more so at center, and his ability to use his body and play defense (both of which he does better than Carter – sadly since Carter should be using his size)
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed
I think most people here would like him to play center. However, the current organizational depth chart, unless they move Briere to wing again, seems to lend itself to Giroux being a RW in the future.
unless Giroux gets to the point, and i think he can, where he should be the first line center, and if Briere is still here, than it’s between him and Richie for 3rd line center.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
So you have a 3rd line center with either a $5.75 mil cap hit, or a $6.5 cap hit, awesome, granted they will see special teams time at least. But you are still neglecting the reality of the depth chart and the possibility Grioux might excel at the RW position. Look, I’m on your side with the Giroux thing, I just want you to open your eyes to the reality of the situation so you don’t go apesh*t if he ends up as a RW.
wont go apeshit. im with you every step of the way. I just wonder how it all shakes out in the future.
Giroux as a RW is a solution, my point is the same as yours, that Giroux could be better as a center.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions
well you either have to trade Briere, or this is why trading Carter made way more sense than Gagne. Gagne is a winger and his cap hit will come down. Carter is a center that we might be able to convert to a winger, but even so his salary will remain at 5 mil or higher.
Trading Gagne solved nothing
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Trading Carter doesn’t solve that problem either. Re-upping Carter will exacerbate the problem, however, if he doesn’t work at wing this year (and he will, with a contract on the line).
yes it does. Gagne’s salary would go down after this season, Carter’s remains and will go up. That’s more cap space right there.
Also Carter would have netted us a winger in addition to keeping Gagne, thus adding to wingers like we needed and expending a center which we have 3 of already (Giroux, Richards, Briere)
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
The problem of having Briere, Richards, and Giroux at center for the money they deserve doesn’t disappear, as it is independent of Carter. For the foreseeable future, they will be here, the hypothetical wingers we could get notwithstanding.
agreed
That’s why moving Carter made so much sense (i know Gagne is gone, but this discussion just magifies the problem we didnt adress by moving Gagne and not Carter). It’s bad enough we would have a cluster fuck between Giroux/Richards/Briere if Giroux starts proving himself as 1st liner talent and even worse if he proves it at center. Because then someone is going to have to move to wing or Richards is goign 3rd line.
AND that’s not even bringing Carter into the equation.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Right, but Carter is moving to the wing, regardless. He has to, and if he works there, why move him?
The reality is, we have four centers capable of playing on the top two lines: two have unmovable contracts, one you’d hate to move at his age, the other onyl fits on the team as a wing, anyway. With a salary cap, you can’t pretend to have three scoring lines; there has to be a talent, and time on ice, drop-off.
we dont know that for sure. if Carter is moving to the wing. Has Homer and Lavy told you that. If not then we dont know.
Carter being succesfful at the wing is ideal, but will it happen and will they try it or move Giroux to the wing first.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not guessing where Carter plays. I’m saying, moving forward, he is immaterial to the problem. Either he goes, he stays as a wing, or he stays as a center and pushes out another guy to the wing. The problem isn’t that we don’t have the wingers, the problem is there’s no way to get that many quality wingers for three full lines.
rehatchign Homer's failing
although i was fine with the Zerdev signing the better move…
was sticking with Powe or Asham for the third line along with JVR and Giroux. Thats a fine 3rd line.
And using the money we signed for Zerdev, and moving Carter to net us a great 1st line RW to put with Richards and Gagne.
Then you actually have 3 well balanced scoring lines with appropriately skilled wingers for each line.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions
but dont try to tell Homer that
according to him we need to keep Carter and never have any money for wingers or play centers at wings.

by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s a fine third line, as long as Giroux is who he is right now: a third line center. All hopes are that he’ll be much better than that this year and in the future. Certainly, that is true of Briere and Richards.
exactly for next season that’s fine.
by bleedorangewhiteblack on Jul 20, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I would assume we’d want more from Giroux this year. Even if we’re okay with that now, this conversation gets more difficult next offseason. It should probably be addressed in the Flyers lineup.
However, I’m guessing you’ll be right. They’ll play their three best futures at center this year, to the general detriment.
yep it only gets worse with each offseason
if you moved Carter then next offseason
at least Gagne’s salary comes down and Carter’s salary is gone. We presumably would have whoever would have been playing 1st line with Richards and Gagne locked down for more than a season so your first line is fine and remains intact.
And if Homer didnt spend stupidly elsewhere, we would have had cap room to keep Leino (if he keeps it up) without moving anyone significant.
And then beyond next offseason you try to move either Briere or Hartnell in a trade to clear way for Giroux’s raise. That becomes easier the more years come off Hartnell or Briere’s contract and of course that they play well.
… but this is all in a universe where this horrid offseason didnt happen.

thanks….. and Carter is a better player than Gagne at this point in their careers I don’t care what position he plays Gagne moved to wing so can Carter give it some time to work where the games aren’t the Stanley Cup Finals and Carter doesn’t have two broken feet.
Not sure why you are thanking me. I agree with BOWB that they should have moved Carter instead of Gagne to alleviate the cluster f*ck at center in the organization.
I don’t really agree with Snevik that Carter will work at wing this year b/c I think Homer is fine paying a 3rd line center $5.75 per, $6.5 per, or whatever Carter will make, and therefore Carter will be left at center. That’s not to say I don’t think he belongs there, I just think he will stay at center while Giroux is moved to wing.
I want him to be on the wing, I just don’t see it happening. I want my hunch to be proved wrong however. If they do resign Carter, and he stays at center, they need to move Briere, which is extremely difficult. Next year terrifies me with Homer at the wheel b/c I can see him going with $19mil invested down the middle on the 1st 3 lines.
Hit post too soon
It was more so, now that the Gagne vs Carter option is gone, what do you do. We hope they move Carter to wing, that seems like a solution going forward. But that still means you would have Giroux stuck on the 3rd line on the depth chart if he is playing center, so you need to move him to wing as well, or move Danny back there where is he far less productive (or trade Danny). Who knows though.
I don’t care about line numbers it is about minutes less the lines that has it going will get the most minutes regardless of what they are deemed line 1 – 3. Richard Carter Briere Giroux all going to get PP time and be around the 18-22 minute mark. Under Lavvy high tempo system this will work out well. Nobody will be over used upfront like they were under Stevens with Richie out there all the damn time and with all the D-Men we have Pronger and Kimmo won’t be playing at 30 minutes a game either. I don’t think Homer cares if Carter is making 6 million as a 3rd line center if he still scores is 40 goals and 80 pts.
That’s the problem, he won’t care, which then you run in to the problem we discussed here, what happens with the winger situation. Did you ignore where this conversation started?
Why do you always ignore the point. You have 4 guys that play center (5 if you include Betts this year), 2 of which you have committed to long term. I don’t care what the lines are either 1,2, or 3…what i care about is having money tied up in one position if a player can’t transition to wing. Then you have an inherent weakness in your team, and are constantly shuffling the lines to get the most production out of your over loaded centers. It’s great you are making these assumptions. Remember when the Gagne trade was going to get a winger in return Nostradamus…if things don’t pan out, you have to think about how the team needs to move forward. Even with 3 centers moving forward, having that much money tied up in your centers, limits your ability to fill out the lines. With the lack of quality prospects in the system, they don’t have a low cost solution in the pipeline that you can count on for the wings. This is the problem Chris, and the point of the conversation.

Thought: If the flyers had any class whatsoever then October 14th (home game against TB) would be a Simon Gagne appreciation night. Expect standing ovation for gagne when he comes on the ice and lots of hugs from flyers, tears from crowd.

That would be odd to be honest with you. It would be kind of weird to have an appreciation night for an active player…on the opposition. However, I would be up for them waiting a night for the banner dropping though, so Gagne could be there.
well it’s not like they wanted to trade him. He is just a cap casualty of cap mismanagement and this is a special case of a player who played 10 years here. Even if management doesn’t do it, fans still will come and pay their respects to gagne. Expect Lappy and Boosh like ovation only bigger
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions
There is absolutely no issue with an ovation. of course there will be an ovation.
But it would be a little ridiculous for the organization to hold a Gagne appreciation night when he is still active, and on his first night back on an opposing team. The crowd ovation will be sufficient. A move from the organization (outside of putting the camera on him before the game starts) would be out of place and inappropriate. When Gagne calls it a career, I’m sure they will have a Simon Gagne night. Until that point however, the crowd will take care of it.
They had an appreciation night for Roenick? Or they gave him a standing O? There is a big difference. I don’t remember an organized appreciation night when he came back to town, in Philly at least.
I was there for it, if it happened, I just don’t remember it. I don’t even remember a highlight real being put together on the scoreboard (which to me is not enough to qualify as a player dedicated night).
I could be wrong, but I can’t remember having a Roenick night in Philly.
Ok well just do something nice for the guy. Allow for standing ovation, show highlights of his career, maybe let him say thanks to the fans. Gagne deserves that much from us

He’ll definitely get a standing O. there isn’t a question. And they will let it run for a while,a nd they’ll have the camera on him. I think the nicest thing they could do that wouldn’t be out of place is to move the banner ceremony back 1 game. But if they already sold individual game tickets, I don’t think they can do that at this point
…..and if he scores a hat trick on us we will toss the hats and cheer.

I think it was in celebration of the goal milestone he hit. They didn’t have a JR night, but they had a presentation on the screen for him.

Sorry, it was the 500 goal milestone, Homer gave him a vase or something pregame and there was a video tribute.
There was a Hextall night, but that was last season or the year before. I mentioned JR because he was playing for the other team. Hexy was obviously retired.
Across the parking lot, there was applause for Dawkins in the Bronco uni. Bigger question is what the reaction will be to McNabb in red and gold.
Pretty mixed, I’d say. I like McNabb, but I think the national media overinflates his abilities a bit and I’m sick and tired of the perception that all of Philly hated him…just look at jersey sales and you know that’s 100% untrue.

so poll question to throw out there: now that the Flyers have cap space again, should they sign Turco/ Theodore? If so, which goalie? How much? How long?
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 1:50 PM EDT reply actions
Who have they waived to give them enough Cap space to get anything done yet? They still sit with just $1mil of cap space.
Not to mention Homer is happy with the roster as it stands hahahaha.
Though you can probably safely assume $1.6mil in cap space b/c right now Bartulis is a Phantom.
why can’t we bury Walker in the AHL instead? we are gonna scratch the guy anyway, why was 1.7 million on a scratch
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions
waste*
you can call him up if someone gets hurt. I still don’t see why we got the guy at all. he has no place on the roster, makes to much money to be 7th defenseman and we actually have defensemen that might be worth calling up and giving a shot to. adding Walker is stupid
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Both are on one-way contracts. I don’t understand the move at all. Unless they move a dman, this pins the Flyers to carrying 8 dmen, or losing a player that has to clear re-entry waivers. Unless they are trading a dman still.
If either get sent down, their # comes off the cap.
So maybe I was wrong, maybe you really only have about $1mil in cap space b/c Homer plans on carrying all 8 dmen given his current contentment with the roster.
unfortunately i heard people speculating carle will be traded. i fear that is a mistake – i dont know, maybe timmo goes at the deadline, even though that’s an unpopular choice… but someone has to go. it’s probably going to work out as walker being the 7th. like you said, why?
i’m also afraid Carle will be traded as well…which would be equally as dumb as trading gagne for walker
by historywillbemade on Jul 20, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Who knows. I hate to speculate on this. I mean lets face it, I have no clue what’s going to happen, I’m just throwing darts right now. I’m just confused as heck between Homer’s “I’m happy with the roster” type statements and the fact that we currently have 8 dmen on 1 way deals, and 3 of those dmen represent your 6th man at either a $1.7mil, $1mil, or 0.6mil hit. Obviously we were all okay with the $1mil and 0.6 mil hit. But not you have $3.3mil tied up in one on ice spot and one depth spot.
OK
Let’s get down to brass tacks. What are you going to tell those folks so heartbroken over the Gagne trade that they are considering leaving their Flyers fandom behind, or, worse, becoming a Lightning fan?
A good friend of mine (HUGE Gags fan) told me he is considering a Gags TB jersey and switching allegiances. I was aghast at the mere suggestion. Goddamn traitors. Crest on the front, not the name on the back, people.
I was furious over the Dawkins (only Eagles jersey I’ve ever owned) and Vick thing last year, and perhaps my fandom was a little lukewarm last year, but I never deserted them.
I want to know your thoughts, peeps. Bring it. Is deserting the Flyers now justified?
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
Your team is your team, no matter what.
Flyers are still my favorite team. To be fair, I don’t have the emotional attachment to Gagne that many here do — I appreciate him as player who always gives his all, and with his talent, that’s a lot. Also, I just love hockey; the Flyers being my favorite team doesn’t mean I automatically hate all other players/teams.

I will bash Homer
And question the moves, and get angry and be mad, but I will always support the Flyers. I wish Gagne well, but not against the Flyers. It will always be Flyers first for me. Even if I think their GM has had a horrible off season, I will be cheering for whatever team is put on the ice come season opener.
no way… eagles had problems defending the pass with and without dawk. he was the best eagle evah !!! but we will be lovin nate allen in the near future, guaranteed. the vick thing gets blown out of proportion with the media. i dont care as long as he scores some goal line TDers. if kolb works out, all will be right with the eagle universe…
gagne was a great for the Flyers. but his injuries were a drag.and it sux because i think he has come full circle and he will be in top form again. but i dont understand why anyone claims superior thinking buying another jersey makes any real statement. it’s gay (not homosexual gay) – wear what you want, i dont care, GO FLYERS and f*ck everything else.
I do not think completely deserting a team over off-season moves is ever justified. That’s not to suggest that some people won’t get away from the sport and the team over time, that happens, but to go from completely supporting the team to no longer supporting the team over 1 move and/or a string of moves in a single off-season is ridiculous for me. When the Eagles signed Vick, some one I know decided to “boycott” the Eagles over it, did not watch a single Eagles game last year, and will not watch one until Vick is off the team. To me, something like that is completely ridiculous. Not every move a team we support makes is going to be a good move, but when the bad ones or the controversial ones come along, that does not mean one should forget about them completely.
Another thing about boycotting and/or deserting the Flyers is that it takes you away from the other players on the team that you love. Now whether or not the Flyers are a better team now than they were in June can be a point of great contention, but this still is a talented team with Pronger, Timonen, Richards, Giroux, Leino, JVR, Lappy, Betts, Briere, Carbomb, etc. Just because Homer backed himself into a corner and traded Gagne to get himself out of it, does not mean you should give a big “fuck you” to the entire organization, which would extend to the above players who at some point or another last year we grew to really love watching.
That being said, I think there is room for 2nd team fandom. I know that not every sports fan believes in this, but personally I always find room for 2nd teams, especially when Philly teams are out of it. That is not to say it can or has to take anything away from one’s Flyers fandom, but supporting an additional team, especially one like Tampa Bay (though the cities have had pretty interesting relationships in sports this past decade) where there aren’t any harsh feelings, isn’t out of bounds. The Hurricanes were my 2nd team in the Eastern Conference for the past decade or so (Brindy FTW!), and now that team is Tampa Bay. It does not take away from my Flyers support, it does not take away from reveling in the Flyers achievements past and present and future, it does not take away the pain of being so close in 2004, but it gives me another team to be happy for when they succeed. And I truly believe this Tampa team will be a force to be reckoned with this coming season.

I’m a big fan of second teams. Growing up it was the Nordiques, but when they moved, I lost some interest (may have been the jerseys as I was young then hahaha, but I always followed my idol, Sakic). I prefer picking a team from the other conference if possible. Nashville has been my second team for a while now, mostly due to Timonen. I never thought he’d end up a Flyer, but loved it when they got him here.
I also rooted for the Whale when I was in college, you freaking hipsters get off my lawn!!!!
But that was because I was close enough to get Hartford over the air (see, back in the day we had “antenna” which with enough aluminum foil and/or coat hangers, would allow you to almost see a picture through the static). and watched a young Shanny/ Primeau/ Kevin Dineen play on. Plus the sweater was cool.
Its not always the player but also the circumstances. I could totally see either an extreme dog lover or animal activist boycott the Eagles for Vicks past. I could also see someone drop the Flyers for the reason of always supporting their “family like running of the buisness with tenured players.” As this trade goes highly against the persona the media always praises the Flyers for.

Never in a million years.
I will NEVER root against the Flyers, nor will I ever switch allegiances to another team OVER the Flyers.
The closest I came was in 1990 when the Flyers traded Dave Poulin. I became a Bruins fan for the next several years. Even then, I NEVER rooted for them over the Flyers. I never came close.

Just the thought of that makes me feel dirty. And to be fair, I like they way that team is shaping up too. They should be interesting to watch.

I’m not saying that I have an issue with the 2nd team theory; I’m just saying he’s the type of guy who’s either this team OR that team.
I’d say switching to the Pens, the team for which all of his childhood friends root, would be even worse. Every time we have a party and those guys come over, they constantly rip Philly teams and their fans and they just make me loathe Pitt fans. They aren’t even from Pittsburgh, for shit’s sake—they are from Selinsgrove.

I love the guy but he has to (and so do we as fans) understand that this is big biz (just look at Bettman’s salary if you don’t think its big biz) and when you get paid a lot of money your services may longer be needed as the team’s contractual obligations come closer to a close.

The problem is that he was a) forced out despite not wanting to go; b) before his contract was up; c) with zero trading leverage; d) for no return; and e) to make up for Homer’s eff up.
Completely avoidable salary dump of a beloved member who didn’t want to go, didn’t have to go, and wasn’t the best option to go. If he wasn’t re-signed at the end of the year, or if he was traded for something of return, or if he was traded at the deadline for something…

Wow…it’s kind of funny but not.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
You know the fight is on now because the NHL never did make clear what was and was not circumventing the CBA. It doesn’t mean he won’t be a Devil I don’t think.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 20, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually the CBA has an entire article about items that will be considered circumvention… So they can easily try to put it into any of the infractions listed in Article 26.
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 20, 2010 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I would love to see the official reasoning by the NHL and compare it to the terms of the CBA they should cite.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 20, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions
My guess is they’re going by:
26.15 Examples of Circumvention. The following is a non-exhaustive list of activities that either constitute a Circumvention under this Article 26 or from which a Circumvention may be inferred:
…
(e) A Club and a Player, during the Player’s active career, agree that upon the
Player’s retirement, he will receive a sum of money for services to be provided to the
Club after retirement.
(f) A Club or Club Actor pays a Player or Player Actor for a “no-show” job,
or for a job in which the payment to the Player or Player Actor clearly exceeds the fair
market value of the services rendered.
And trying to slide it in between e and f, that he’d be getting paid under his SPC for years after he would retire. The NTC that would be in effect for the years after the contract drops down are probably an extra red flag, too. Besides, those years (and we may have the same problem with Prongs, but a decade earlier and not quite as egregiously), the contract could very well be below the league minimum at that point.
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 20, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Simply because although this may be the worst example of cap circumvention, it isn’t the first, and it seems arbitrary to draw the line in the sand now as opposed to say the Islanders when they were signed DiPietro to that ridiculous contract.(Then again, that may have just been because they wanted a 15 year contract)
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
But DiPietro’s salary is the same the entire length. There’s no circumvention there at all since his cap hit is his salary in every year.

I admit that I am not the world’s greatest CBA expert and I apologize if asking this constitutes ignorance on my part, but what makes the Kovy situation different than some of the long-term deals given to Richards, Pronger, Hossa, DiPietro, Ovechkin, etc.?
Thanks!
Chris Pronger stole my last signature.
I think it’s just an issue of coming right up close to the line on some contracts, leaning over the line and seeing how far you can go without getting in trouble on others, and then the Kovy contract is just disregarding the line altogether.
I’ll break those down so they can be compared… By age, I mean the age they’ll be by the CBA’s rules during the final year of the contract. (ie, age as of June 30th before the final season starts)
Richards: Signed through age 34, lowest salary at the end of the deal is 3M per year. Maybe it’s starting to toe the line, but it makes sense and wouldn’t really be an infraction.
Pronger: Signed through age 41, final two years are at 525k. Definitely testing the waters of crossing the line, but recent history had some age 40ish defensemen signing one year deals in the 550k range so it wasn’t completely egregious even if it really was over the line.
Hossa: Signed through age 41, final 4 years are at 1M per. Similar explanation to Pronger, definitely pushing the limits, but he could still conceivably play at that age so it would be hard to say for certain that it was legitimately over the line.
DiPietro: Signed through age 38, 4.5M flat every year with no salary decrease. Stupid, but not circumventing the CBA.
Ovechkin: Signed through age 34, salary actually increases over time and he’s getting 10M in the last year of the deal.
Kovy: Signed through age 43, first 2 years @ 6M, then 5 years @11.5M, then one each at 10.5M, 8.5M, 6.5M, 3.5M, 750k, and then 5 years at 550k. I think it’s definitely a big step farther over the line than the Pronger or Hossa contracts, far enough to not be in the gray area anymore.

- Pronger’s takes him to age 42 with salary ranges of $525k to $7.6 mil (7 years)
- Hossa’s takes him to age 42 with salary ranges of $1 mil to $7.9 mil (12 years)
- Ovechkin’s takes him to age 36 with salary ranges of $9 mil to $10 mil (13 years)
- Kovalchuk’s takes him to age 44 with salary ranges of $550k to $11.50 mil (17 years)
- DiPietro’s takes him to age 40 with a $4.5 mil salary every year for 15 years
Just by looking at that, you can see that DiPietro’s is perfectly fine (if stupid) and so is Ovechkin’s. The salary doesn’t drop dramatically at any point.
Richards’ also isn’t bad since it started at $5.4 mil, raising slowly for 5 years, and peaking at $8.4 mil. It then declines slowly for the next seven years, where he still has a $5.5 mil salary in the 9th year of the 12 year contract. It’s a bell curve that doesn’t bottom out.
That leaves Hossa, Pronger, and Kovalchuk. First, Pronger’s is a 35+ contract, so even if he retires, the Flyers are on the hook for the cap hit. (Barring a trade, mind you)
Second, Hossa’s is a little more suspect since he gets $7.9 mil for the first 7 years (to age 37), then drops to $4 mil. Per the CBA, his salary isn’t allowed to drop more than $3.95 mil from year to year, and his drops by $3.9. That’s a red flag. When it drops to $1 mil the year after (age 38) and stays that way for 4 more years, that’s a huge red flag. This contract is completely suspect.
But it doesn’t match Kovalchuk’s. First, Lou is brilliant. He knew the deal would be closely questioned, so he started the contract out with two years of $6 mil salary. This means that he can’t drop his salary by more than $3 million in any given year. Surely, it will be gradual. Nope. He gets $11.5 mil in each of the next 5 years (to age 34). Then it goes:
- $10.5 mil
- $8.5 mil
- $6.5 mil
- $3.5 mil
Again, this makes it look perfectly fine. Making $3.5 million per year at age 38? That’s a lot, but make your own bed. At age 39, he’s making $750k. A flag pops up. The problem is that he’s still getting paid from age 40 through age 44, only making $550k per year. No way a guy who gets paid $3.5 million per year at age 38 will play 6 more years for a total of the same amount he made in just the last year.
It’s the obvious extension of the deal just to lower the cap hit that set this one down in flames. But… how the NHL justifies it will be interesting in light of Hossa’s, which is bad but not as egregious.

It amuses me that we were both looking at the same pages on Capgeek and typing these responses to JFein at the same moments in time. Very weird.
