I’m pretty sure the thirty game unbeaten streak is up there in terms of unbreakability, but the ones listed are all individual and not team.

Yeah I was going to say where is our 35 Unbeaten streak??? I don’t think that can be beaten at all.

Funny thing about that Leino picture. Leino is with a hottie and then you see a pic of Hartnell on same link with some old woman. lol. Leino has it going on and hartnell…well atleast Hartnell’s wife is hot, if they are still together that is

If I am with Sharapova or Anna the last thing I am thinking about is tennis, I don’t care if Anna has trouble boiling water she is smoking. And at least if we do for whatever reason decide to play tennis I might have a chance of scoring a legit point here or there.
True Story:
In 2000, at the height of Kournikovamania, I was a teenager working as a bellhop at a hotel she stayed in. I had to run a package up to her door when one night. She answered wearing a towel and nothing else.
One of my subordinate bellhops (I was in charge! yay!) topped me though. He stole the laundry box containing her unmentionables.
Thanks a lot Geoff for mentioning my fan post. I appreciate it :)

700 Level dedicated a post to the King Myno thing, too. I’ll never know why. No one man has ever cherry-picked more arbitrary facts about goaltending.
His article completely ignores the fact the Homer had about 14.2 million other options available through FA to upgrade defense (granted exaggerated slightly). And his choice of trades/signings that ignored what the market was is the whole problem. If he plays the market, Gagne is still here this year and the defense is still improved.
And this quote:
if you think Holmgren is leading the Flyers down the wrong path, I don’t think you understand hockey.
You know what Cimino, I don’t you understand how the cap and FA market can be used to your advantage.
Depends on what he means by the wrong path. As level-headed people around here have discussed, there is a difference between getting better and maximizing your potential to get better.
I wonder if anyone has ever told Holmgren that “haste makes waste.”
Maybe that could replace relentless as this year’s slogan.

lol. how many times did homer jump the gun this offseason? sure it started out good with Homer trying to get early start (Hamhuis, Nabby, Turco) and then went downhill fast Leighton, Mez

And he mentions the fact that we have 8, count them EIGHT defense men to start the season. And we’re in the same boat on winger as we were before. Not to mention that as much as he bashes Asham and easily replaced he is and then goes on to say we need to re-sign him.
I saw the article and wondered why I’d never read it before. Now after reading the piece, I understand why.
"In fact, it is probably safe to say, the statement "I am a hockey fan" is the same as "I hate gary bettman."- bfrank27
That’s where I found the article. But since I’ve been bashing him I figured I’d put the two side-by-side.

I just saw DG’s post on the other thread, about Gags being approached a month ago about waiving him NTC. WTF Homer, this makes things even worse.
It appears the plan was to ask him to waive it, ignore his answer, proceed as if he wasn’t on the team.

I guess that explains why Homer didn’t feel it necessary to use the free agent market to get more value in the moves he made to accomplish his goals in the offseason. But then, why not shop Gagne before you back in to a corner. Ugh, this honestly makes it worse for me. I want to like Homer, I really do, but I just get more and more upset.
The season needs to start so I can stop analyzing and just start cheering.
haha, because nobody puts baby in a corner!
What’s sad is that I had no problem with Homer until around the trade deadline.

Yeah I I was the same way with Homer; which is why I really don’t want to hate him, but f it, I do now.
Its why I dont hold a grudge with Gagne stating he was only willing to waive his NTC to one team and allowing Tampa to screw Homer with the deal.

Sportsnet reports the Devils will not appeal the NHL’s decision on Kovalchuk contract.
This whole situation is unbelievable. Did Lou offer this contract to make the NHL reject it and see the problem with these or something?
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
The strange thing about this report, though, is that I was under the impression the Devils couldn’t appeal and only the PA could.

Or Lou’s owner said “Make this happen. 17 years, if you have to.” And lou wanted to show him why that’s not the soundest of plans.
Could be… I really don’t know why they won’t appeal it… so I guess the question now is what’s next?? Do the Devils re-structure the contract and don’t make it crap? Does Ilya become a FA again and he goes somewhere else?

I would doubt it, since they have their first ever press conference to announce a player signing.
What amazes me is no one from the league called the Devils to say, maybe you don’t want to do a press conference until we approve the trade.
Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.
5-8-10...the day the Purdue Boilermakers basketball team won the 2011 NCAA Championship!!
From Lou’s comments it doesn’t seem like he had a choice in the matter. He bashed the contract himself. He seems to have been strong armered by the owners. They were willing to sign Kovalchuk to this ridiculous contract not Lou. I can’t imagine how anyone could say with a straight face that Kovy will play in the NHL til he’s 44. I’m a fan of Kovy have been since he was a rookie but even I’m not jaded enough to think he’ll play til he’s 44 here. He’ll probably play here til he’s 35-37 then go to the KHL like Jagr did and make big money there til he’s 44.
by tmurder on Jul 21, 2010 1:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
This whole Kovalchuk fiasco provided quite the interesting revelation: apparently NJ Devils fans feel like the NHL is consistently conspiring against them. I thought us Flyers fans and Red Wings fans had cornered the market on paranoia.
no the devils’ fans think that the devils basically caused all the rule changes.

And that Gary Bettman hates them.
Is there seriously a fanbase in this league who does NOT feel that Gary Bettman hates their team? As much as we say he wants to blow Crosby, I am pretty sure most Penguin fans do not like him as well.
Chris Pronger stole my last signature.
I think we can resolve the issue once and for all by simply stating that Gary Bettman hates hockey. Would anyone disagree?
Honor is no substitute for victory.
That would in fact explain just about everything about him.
Well deduced.

Stewart could end up in the ECHL. But that’s still three goalies in the AHL where you should have two. Honestly, if I’m Homer, first I hit myself for being an idiot, then I see if I can get anything at all for Boucher. Maybe he can get a junk prospect or two, or maybe a late draft pick if he includes a junk prospect of his own. Backlund’s probably as ready as he’ll ever be for the NHL, so it won’t be too much of a difference.
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
My roller hockey team needs a goalie for next season, maybe I should give Niiiiiiicolaaaaaaa a call.
We’re pretty shitty, so he’ll definitely get a lot of shots in.
I might be available. do goalies need to wear skates in your league?
by historywillbemade on Jul 21, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Can we loan some of them around to another AHL team or maybe Europe. Obviously you keep Backlund and Bobrovsky here to learn NA game but could send Riopel to Europe.
What are the chances that any of these prospects (including Eriksson) develop into the goalie the Flyers need?
by historywillbemade on Jul 21, 2010 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Loaning to another AHL team is technically possible, but it never happens — especially for goalies, since roster space is so limited and almost every team has some goalie prospects. I don’t think Riopel would benefit at all from being in Europe. In fact, the game is so different for a goalie because of the different rink size, that could really hurt his development since he’s played in North America all his life, would have to re-adjust all his techniques, and just when he’s finally settling in, he’d be ready to come back to North America when he’d have to re-re-adjust back to the North American game.
As for the likelihoods, well, Backlund is in the process of proving he can perform at the NHL level (need to see more than 40 minutes, obviously, but they were a very solid 40 minutes all things considered with his injury). Eriksson is doing very good things in Sweden, and should be given the time and patience necessary to learn all he can in the SEL, which is where he’s moving up to for this season. Once he’s brought over to North America and plays for the Phantoms, we’ll get a better idea of where he might be. Riopel’s set league records in the Q but we haven’t seen very much of him at the professional level (he played just 11 games for the Phantoms before being sent back to junior). He’s a very technical goalie but isn’t very large in stature. We’ll see how he develops over the next few years. Bobrovsky is a true wild-card. He’s put up excellent numbers (and made some absolutely incredible saves, as you can see from Tony’s links) in front of a god-awful team in the KHL. It seems there’s a belief inside the organization he could be the real deal, and real soon.
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
so in terms of development we are looking at:
Bob- who knows maybe a year or two, possibly less
Backlund- needs to be on Flyers roster to see what he can do
Eriksson- 2-3 years
Riopel- 2-3 years on Phantoms
Stewart- probably never make it

So if you could steal one player from each team in the division, who would you steal for the Orange and Black and why?
For me:
Pitt: Staal- big strong center that shuts down top lines and outscores them, all-around player
NYR: Lundqvist- best goalie in the division, the only thing keeping the rangers afloat
NYI: Tavares- not many choices but go with the kid
NJD: Parise- can score, hard worker, future captain

NYI: Taveres for Briere.
NYR: Lundqvist for Leighton.
Scoring centers that are the best players on their team to replace our scoring center. And, because Leighton isn’t good enough.
God love Danny
Interesting that you grab two centers…
PIT: Crosby – if we’re not talking reasonably, I don’t see how you don’t steal Crosby.
NYR: Lundqvist – without a doubt
NYI: Streit – really don’t want another center
NJ: Parise – no doubt.

For the Giroux discussion, don’t forget the highlight reel from game 7 of Boston where he outworked three Bruins along the boards playing the puck with his skates. If you care about jerseys, and how they look (stitching, number/nameplate locations, etc) I would grab a picture/description from rmg of the jersey before you order it. I see a lot of people walking around with $50 Flyers jerseys. But you know what, they look like $50 Flyers jerseys. That’s not to say these won’t be good, b/c you can find them, but I would be sure to do my homework before I ordered one. If it turns out not to be good, the best way to get a deal (depending where you live) is to get a blank jersey cheap from an online shop, and take it to a local TRUSTED shop for lettering and numbering. I go to one in Secane; I always talk to them about stitching and the font style, and whether there is a name plate or not on the real ones etc etc etc. It’s usually really cheap to do, and you can count on the result. Just some words of advice from a jersey snob.
Is this the right room for an argument?

BREAKING:
#Flyers still negotiating with RFA Darroll Powe as Blair Betts recovers from shoulder surgery and could miss a month of reg. season.
I can only imagine the sources this man must have!
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
Betts out four months.
It flew under the radar some, but Flyers center Blair Betts had an update on his estimated return from offseason shoulder surgery. And it’s not encouraging.
“It’s probably closer to four months before I’m able to play again,” Betts told Comcast SportsNet Tuesday. “So we’ll see what the doctor says in a couple weeks.”
Betts, 30, missed 19 games during the regular season with shoulder injuries. He underwent surgery on the affected area about a month ago and has been rehabbing some, but said he expects he is still two weeks away from skating.
If his estimate is correct, Betts could be out of the lineup until late November — effectively missing the first two months of the Flyers’ season. And he’ll be missed.
The Flyers’ fourth-line center, Betts was the anchor of the team’s penalty kill last season. But he also set career highs in points (18), assists (10), plus/minus (plus-7) and game-winning goals (2). He’s a known character guy in the locker room, and is well-liked among both fans and teammates.
Betts’ projected absence could clear space for center Darroll Powe, a restricted free agent. Though he did not file for arbitration, Powe remains unsigned. With a so-called “surplus” of centermen, questions have arisen concerning how — or whether — Powe could fit into the team’s lineup.
You ain't a has-been, if you never was.
But he also set career highs in points (18), assists (10), plus/minus (plus-7) and game-winning goals (2).
sounds awfully similar to:
Betts set career highs in assists, points, plus/minus, and game winning goals.
And to think, I just wrote that yesterday, while wondering about Betts’ shoulder.

Considering Powe plays a lot on the wing, it’s not really hard to see how he would fit on the team. He should be the 4th line winger anyway. He can play center while Betts is out, and the team will dress Shelley or Nodl to play the wing.

haha, no. It makes me cranky because people apply their logic while ignoring history. Two things wrong with that.

agreed. I like him a lot. Kills penalties, skates fast, is a banger, tough as nails, and can score like 10 goals a year. He occasionally turns the puck over but other than that great role player that is cheap

8 Defensemen
Once again correct me if I am wrong here. I do remember Lavy starting 8 D-Men when he was coaching the Cans or was it just 5 I think it was a strange number at least some of the time. Is that something we might have planned with Walker. Only running 11 Forwards and 8 D-Men. Not that I am in favor of it I am just saying is that a real possibility?
Per Capgeek,
Flyers re-sign Matt Clackson to 1 year, $500,000 deal.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
Oh yeah. That’s if he was signed to a two way contract.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I’m not sure. Unless that is what is signified by the different colours in the contracts.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
Yeah it looks two-way to me. I think they always color it that way; but there’s two different dollar amounts there, so that makes it two-way no matter what.

Interesting Fact: Michael Leighton has two goalie fights to his credit, both in the AHL.
One against Jimmy Howard and one against Cam Ward who Leighton later served as a backup for

A new perspective on the Gagne trade
Homer got a 3rd round pick for 3 days of negotiation with Dan Hamhuis. Homer got a 4th round pick for one year of Simon Gagne.

Yeah, that adds into how I’m not convinced this was planned and not a salary dump. Asking him to waive his NTC all the way back at the draft, suddenly mispronouncing his name intentionally when he’s said it correctly for years, being so eager to get rid of him, etc. This was totally planned. So I’m not sad about Gagne being gone anymore, because for the sake of his happiness, I’d rather see him somewhere that he’s going to be treated right, and Stevie Y is not going to mistreat him this way. I’ve just lost all the respect I once had for Homer, which while I wasn’t exactly his biggest defender, I still had some respect for the good things he’s done. But this was the last straw.

Bah, I typed that first sentence wrong. I am convinced it was planned, and not a salary dump. Referring back to my comments at the bottom of the Gagne trade thread.

You made me re-think my opinion which I stated in my latest fan post. Even though I said nothing would make me think otherwise, I actually have to admit that I think you’re right. And honestly, this is even worse. If it had been all Holmgren’s mistakes and stupid signings I would say “okay, you’re an idiot but at least an honest idiot.” But coming to a conclusion that he had it all planned out makes me SICK and makes me want to kill him even more. Damn, I hate that guy!

He’s still an idiot. By “planning” to trade Gagne and proceeding like he already did, he kept ensuring he got nothing for him. Homer would have waived Gagne had he not decided to choose Tampa, simply because he was already on the assumption he’d be gone.

Of course he’s still an idiot. But the more I know about this whole thing, the more I feel like vomiting. Frankly, now I have to say that I’m glad to have Simon on the Lightning. This is another reason for me to like it.

Yeah, I never did like the Lightning (they’re jerseys and arena are the main reasons) but now I’m going to root for them.

I like you and Geoff. And I love Simon. But god darn I hate the Lightning. Freaking Rusty still haunts my dreams. I think it came from Game 6. At the game, a guy behind me was from England, but had recently moved to Tampa. It was his first hockey game he attended, and he didn’t know much about the sport. He was drunk and obnoxious the entire game. So between the Lightning breaking my hearts and my linking of that idiot to the team, I can’t bring myself to liking them. Oh and don’t forget their whole connection to the Hogan family.
Yep, just can’t bring myself to support them. Go Gagne, do awesome there, but BOOOOOO Lightning.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Hahaha. It’s absolutely okay. Can’t blame you for that. But… You wouldn’t mind Simon winning the Cup there, would you?

I’d be happy for Simon if he wins the cup anywhere. I was happy for Rod when he won it in Carolina (even though I was backing Edmonton in that series). There are certain players you can’t help but support. I remember him when he first came here, and meeting him then, and how much he has grown. I’ve watched him grow in to a very gracious man over the years from attending the meet the team events and what not. He really came out of his shell in Philly. So there is no way I could be upset about Simon winning a cup anywhere, even with a bitter rival.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I’m sorry I couldn’t stand watching Gagne win the cup if he were with the Pens. It would make me puke. Lightning maybe it would be ok with me as long as they didn’t beat the Flyers along the way and gagne didn’t pull a Rusty.

The Cup is a special things, and there are special players that never get to lift it. Gagne will always be special to me, and if he gets to lift the Cup anywhere, I won’t be looking at the jersey he is wearing, but rather his expression as he lifts the ultimate prize. If you can’t see past a jersey for someone that gave so much to Philadelphia, I feel bad for you.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Nothing more to say. Even though I haven’t known Simon for so long and I never met him, I feel absolutely the same way about him. I want him to lift that silver thing so bad. He deserves it like none other.

As much as we hate Homer, now that I know that Simon was getting this treatment no matter what, he’s in a better place. The whole “if you love some let them go” adage. Gagne is an insanely nice person, he doesn’t deserve to be treated this way. I’ve met a lot of very nice hockey players, but by my own experiences and also those being passed around by other fans right now, Gagne could possibly rival some of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my life. I’d honestly rather see him be treated well, now that I’ve reached this conclusion.
I’m actually proud of myself for making it through all 5 stages of grief and arriving at Acceptance this fast. I thought it would take way longer than 72 hours, haha.

I absolutely agree. I wish Simon only the best and I believe he’s better off with Yzerman as a GM of the team he plays for. I hope Simon has a stunning season next year. And I’m kinda proud of myself too… I went through weird stages… excitement over the fact that he ended up on the Lightning, confusion and then absolute depression… Some people say there’s no crying in hockey but damn, I haven’t cried so much in my whole life as I cried in the past month. I don’t want to go through this again. Never again.

I wouldn’t grow too attached to our other movable pieces either: Carle, Coburn, Hartnell (NTC? Do you want to go to the minors Scott?), Briere (NMC? I don’t care about your NMC!!).
If you want to get attached to a player, try Jeff Carter.

Get attached to Richards. We have him for a long time at a good cap hit, particularly for what he does.
Or Giroux. I love the little cheese addict’s game already.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I wish we could be guaranteed Homer won’t trade Giroux. Like a fan-GM pact.
