I think he’ll agree with me, I need to get a PS3. I refuse to pay for xbox live just so I can use the internet I plugged into my console.

XBOX keeps up with there network better bans cheaters and those who exploit the game like the max stats cheat, the auto loss cheat etc…. Plus my OTP team on XBOX is top 25. t is only 5 bucks a month. You can save that by buying regular DVDs over Blu-Ray anyway.

Have you played Halo in the past 2 years? I own an xbox, but I’ll admit that the PS3 is a 10x better product.

JpH the voice of reason. You my boy Blue. But seriously, I was a huge XBox supporter when it came out. But you can only bend me over 8 times before I get pissed off. PS3!!!!
Is this the right room for an argument?
The only reason i dont switch is because I play hockey and halo online with my cousins almost nightly(even though im still pretty sure they cheat at hockey haha). I cant really afford to own all three systems, o im kinda stuck with an xbox for a while.
Also, if you own a PS3, play heavy rain. Probably one of the best torys in a game ever. Also, it takes place in Philly.

I got a PS3 when I bought my house, I had to fix my 360 twice, and it broke a 3rd time (that’s what I get for home grown fixes I guess, but the warranty what’s up, and I wasn’t going to pay b/c they don’t understand how to cool a machine). I justified the PS3 b/c I was down to just a Wii at that point, and I also needed a Blu Ray player. I also got it with my Amex points, so in theory it was “free”.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I put both an XBox and a PS3 on my wedding “registry” and my fiancée got all pissed because she said it’s supposed to be gifts for both of us. I tried to explain that she would enjoy the blu-ray player but it didn’t go over well. Hopefully in a couple weeks I can join the 21st century.

You have to go over and watch a BluRay at a friends house with her that has a PS3 and a decent sound system. As far as BluRays go, the PS3 is one of the best for sound, it honestly the biggest difference I notice between BluyRay and regular DVD. It’s seriously something else.
Also congrats.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I am actually in the process of debating between 360 and ps3….I’m hearing a lot of positives on the ps3 side. The knock I’ve seen and heard most often against the ps3 is their network isn’t as good as xbox live. I haven’t had a game system since college (even then, most of my time was spent playing Counterstrike on my computer), so I’m looking for some opinions…Go!
Fighter of the Nightman.
Champion of the Sun.
the only reason that the network isnt as good is because xbox has a 3:1 player ratio to the PS3. More people own xbox, thus, more people play xbox online over PS3 online. Plus, in essence, the PS3 is cheaper then the xbox, because for say $300, an xbox gets you a standard system and needs a hdmi output, a wireless usb antenna(which the have the nerve to charge a $100 for), where PS3 comes with all that built in plus blu-ray. So you really end up paying $600 for an xbox, where the PS3 is still $300, and free online for playstation network.
And not that it means anything, but Playstation is more of an RPG system and adventure, the only games that I know people play online are MW2 and MAG, where xbox has mostly FPS that are made for online play(which really pissed me off when i payed $60 for MW2 and the campaign was only 4 hours long). So thats another reason why people play more online o xbox then PS3.
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
Excellent point with the HDMI, I forgot that…does the new 360 have one?
Is this the right room for an argument?
Im not sure, I know it has built in WiFi though, but I never understood the reasoning to buy the same system again for $300 when you still have the old one. But MS made it so only the new slim xboxs and the elite’s are compatible with Kenitc, so anyone who wants a Will rip off has to pay an extra $300-$500 anyway.
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
PS3 does not come with an HDMI cable either. But those are cheap anyway, you can get them for 5 bucks.
The only way you end up spending that much is if you absolutely NEED wireless. I have no need for one, as I would much rather have the console hardwired into the router.
You ain't a has-been, if you never was.
The original XBox 360 (non elite model) did not have a HDMI port period. Not talking about the cable.
Is this the right room for an argument?
That’s true. But PS3 is free. It’s one of the best Blu Ray players you can buy (the sound is amazing on it, seriously a hugely under rated feature for media in general with the PS3). It depends if you plan on doing a lot of online gaming stuff. It also depends on your obsession with the Halo franchise. I don’t do a lot of online gaming anymore (living with your girlfriend will do that to you), so for me, it’s not even close, why would I pay for a service that I may use every now and then, when it’s free on PS3, plus the PS3 doubles as an excellent Blu Ray player. However, if you love Halo, and do a ton of online gaming, a 360 could be the better option.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I'll stand up for xbox(kinda)
The main factor for deciding what system you should get is the exclusive games. Xbox has Halo and Fable and Mass effect as their big three, while PS3 has Uncharted, heavy rain, God of War, and most Final Fantasy games, and Wii has Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, and all those other Nintendo games that everybody you know plays. What throws the wrench into that is that games like Halo and God of War and Mass effect are done with main games (IE like Halo 3 was the last main halo game, but they will put out other halo style games), but i still say tha:
Nintendo games > Final Fantasy(both systems) > Halo + Fable > Uncharted + Heavy rain. So my theroy is that, ass long as final fantasy keeps putting out their main, non MMORPG games onto xbox, its not worth switching for me.

I’ll gladly pay up to $200 for a used PS3 that still works if anyone wants to ;)

They need to add a mask designer for goalies. I’ve been waiting years for a good create-a-mask function that allows you to make and save your own helmets for the game.

Shit I was going to ask about Thoresen today. Is there any truth the rumor or belief that will need or should acquire another Russian to keep Zherdev company.
Well, Thoresen’s Norwegian. But the Flyers still hold his rights because he went to the KHL, and the Flyers need to either sign him, waive him or trade his rights if he wants to be back in the NHL this year.

Sounds like something Homer could say… but in that case we could have kept Gagne.
Also that brings up a good question, what exactly is the penalty for being over the cap in the NHL?

by Lindbergh 31 on Jul 22, 2010 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I think if you’re over the cap, your upper limit is lowered by the overage amount for the following year (like we saw with several teams’ bonus overages), but I’m not 100% sure on that.
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
That sounds reasonable, but I’m not sure. I tried looking it up on my own and it seems what I read teams get fined and draft picks taken away. Anybody who knows exactly what the penalty may be?
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
by Lindbergh 31 on Jul 22, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, that sounds right. Maybe going over the cap isn’t such a bad idea for the Flyers — it’s not like they have a lot of high-round draft picks to lose anyway.
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
It has to constitute a circumvention to get to before losing draft picks, but there’s a flat $25,000 for just filing any SPC that would put you over. If it’s determined that you did so knowingly and it’s ruled a circumvention, you can lose draft picks and be fined up to 5 million bucks. Oh, and that up-to-5M counts against the cap. I don’t think that would happen in a routine case, but if Lou’s cap goes down by 5M because the NHL rules against him, it’ll be an interesting summer.
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 22, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks. I was just going to post some speculation onto what a team can do, but you answered it clearly. I’m sure though Homer can make it seem like he went over the cap unknowingly, but then he’d screw us over even more and I’m sure will get fired.
I was wondering if a team could afford the fine and didn’t care about losing the draft picks that they would do it anyway, but a 5 million dollar fine and losing that from the cap seems very hefty, no team will do that.
It would be a very interesting summer indeed if the Devils get fined and lose a cap hit, guarantees Kovalchuk will go somewhere else.

I…guess. But there’s a difference between Latvia’s relationship with Russia and Ukraine’s relationship with Russia. I remember reading a week ago that there’s some kind of discrimination in Latvia against Russian speakers.

I’m pretty sure there’s some of that in the Ukraine too. At least one person I know, who lives there, has told me so; and the members of my family who were in that area on military duty told me that there was that kind of discrimination there when I used to ask as a kid what it was like over there.

I would have, if my high school had offered it. We were required to take two years of a foreign language, and my school had Spanish, French, German, and Latin. The next school over had the fun ones – they had Russian and Japanese teachers.

We had all of the above plus Italian. But all of the teachers were terrible, and everybody ended up in the position as I did: I can conjugate a verb in Spanish into every possible tense and I know all the grammar, but I can’t order a cup of coffee because I learned no vocabulary in 8 years.

Shortly after the dissolution of the Bloc, I read/saw/was told somewhere that there was a political party in the CR that, as part of their platform, were pushing to lower the price of beer from US equivalent $0.10 to $0.05 (that’s ten cents to five cents). I was impressed at the time and remember thinking “that’s someplace I would like to live”.
Anyway, I’ve got a few nice beer glasses from Prague.

There are few American beers I like – Yuengling, Old Heathen, Raven, and an orange blossom pilsner that I can’t remember the name of off the top of my head are the only distinctive ones I like. Most others are either so bland I don’t care, or I dislike them.

2.2% are French and 0.4% French Canadian.

English isn’t that hard if you’ve had any latin or germanic languages—but for people with limited language skills, it would be difficult.

English is a history of invasion – its origins come from the West Germanic language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons. North Germanic was added by the conquest of the Danelaw by Halfdan Ragnarsson and Ivar the Boneless. It picked up words from Norse from Scandinavian traders and raiders. After the Norman conquest of 1066, French wove its way into the language. Medieval Latin and Renaissance Latin were also added through the Church. It’s a fun little bastard language.
Honor is no substitute for victory.

Look at the two most famous goalies in Flyers history. Hextall and Bernie were fit the description of crazy goalies. I’d bet that if the term crazy goalie was in the dictionary you’d find a picture of Hextall next to it. That’s why Emery could’ve been the next one for us b/c he was also crazy.

So the forwards have stayed the exact same, minus two changes:
Gagne out; Zherdev in and Asham out; Shelley in.

Offensively, I say that Zherdev will still put up better numbers then Gagne will, and Asham will still put up better numbers then Shelly. So its a draw on offense, a draw on goalies, and a huge raise on defense from this point last year.
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
For me “huge raise on defense” has an asterisk next to it, and a footnote reading “While Giroux is an up-and-coming two way forward, he’s not quite as good in the defensive zone as Gagne, but he’ll be taking Gagne’s shifts on the PK”. Giroux is getting better, but he’s not at the same level yet defensively. Definitely going in the right direction, but I think he still needs a little more time.
And I’m not convinced about Zherdev putting up better numbers than Gagne. He’s certainly got offensive potential, but Gagne had work ethic. That remains to be seen here.

I hope both Carter and Zherdev can put a lot of effort into their play. I feel that Lavy can motivate them, but if he can’t I don’t think anybody can. Carter I think can play with some determination this year and I have higher hopes. Zherdev I think really wanted to come back to the NHL so I’m hoping that translates to a lot of hard work… but again they both can be flakes and we will be missing Gagne’s amazing work ethic.

Zherdev I think will be 50/50. One hand he will be like Emery and be happy to be back in the NHL and play his mind out. Or he will be like his old self, but hopefully a fire will be lit under his ass and play well.

Not really…we could have kept Gagne if we didn’t pull the trigger on Meszaros, have Pronger, Timonen, Coburn, Carle, O’Donnell, and Bartulis as the D, and still have Zherdev. The only way Homer’s a victor is if some Toews-level talent miraculously falls to the fourth round.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Would a towes level talent every play 4th line? I dont understand that sentence. Im saying that Homer still made the team better, though he made some awful trades in the process. would you rather a guy like Gagne playing 4th line, or have Meszaros and O’donall being our third line pairing?
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
I’m just saying the Gagne trade only became necessary because of other bad trades. It wasn’t a case of “Gagne or Zherdev,” it was a case of “No Gagne because Shelley and Zherdev and Meszaros and O’Donnell.” The biggest cause of needing to trade Gagne was the Meszaros deal, since that added $4m of salary for a #5 (for us) defenseman. If you look at our two deals with Tampa, we traded Gagne and a 2012 2nd round pick for Meszaros, Walker, and a 2011 4th round pick, for a net loss of $1.7m in cap space. Our defense would have been perfectly sound without either Meszaros or Walker, so if we hadn’t done those deals, we’d have a higher pick a year later, Gagne, Bartulis instead of Meszaros, and an extra $1.7m in cap space. Even if Gagne gets hurt in Tampa, it’s impossible to say whether he would have gotten hurt in Philadelphia., so unless that 4th round pick really pans out (or Meszaros turns into the Second Coming of Chris Pronger), it was a stupid pair of trades.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I know i have a knack for hating on Coburn, but Meszaros is still a better player then him, so its more like $4 mill for #4, and $3.2 Mill for #5 anyway. The Coburn deal was the backbreaker.
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
Yeah, I have felt that Coburn could have come a bit cheaper for us, but I’m not upset he’s still here, I think he’ll have a nice bounce-back this season.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
by Lindbergh 31 on Jul 22, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the whole team has a bounce back season. Richards and Carter will both have 80+ point seasons, especially on the same line, Hartnell cant get any worse, which will make Briere and Leino better, and JVR and Giroux have a finisher with Zherdev, so their stats will only rise, plus we get another year of experience for the young guys, and a whole training camp and pre season with Lavi to get players in shape. Add in the beastly D, and were a better team then last year.
My only hope is that richie and Carter will get back to scoring consistently and on the PK. Those shorties were key before, and not scoring on the PK last year really hurt us.
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
Yeah I’m with you on that. I feel that everybody on the team is for a bounce back in some form. But I agree with everything you said, especially I do want to get many more shorties this year and lead the league in them again.
But like you I think Carter and Richards will have seasons like 08-09, the Hartnell-Briere-Leino line will hopefully be great (even if they aren’t half as crazy as they were in the playoffs, they’ll still be great). If they keep Zherdev with Giroux I think G can have 50-60 assists in the season (no exaggeration, it’s totally possible). Meszaros I think can go back to his Ottawa form. I also predicted a great season for Gagne, but he’ll have to have that in Tampa (tear)
Betts and Lappy will still be beasts. Pronger and Timonen will be business as usual. I do have high hopes for this team, once I’m over Gagne and we get to training camp I think I’ll be in a great mood.

Couldn't disagree more.
It really wasn’t. B/c substitute Foster for Meszaros, place him a #5 and use his shot on the PP instead of Meszaros. This way Coburn is your #4 at $3.2 and Foster is your #5 for $1.8. Coburn got more than he should, but he also was our established #4 guy, and with that $ amount given to him before the Meszaros trade, he basically got 2nd pairing stamped on his head. So Meszaros is a very expensive luxury #5 that could have been replaced with Foster (or Corvo, or Morris, or Tallinder, etc etc etc for less).
Is this the right room for an argument?
Either way, b/c Meszaros was brought in, you are now paying your #5 guy too much.
Is this the right room for an argument?
not as bad as what we are paying our 7th/8th.
by historywillbemade on Jul 22, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Well considering Foster would cost you $1.8, that’s either a $1.4 mil over pay for Coburn at 5, or a $2.2mil over pay for Meszaros at 5. Walker, assuming he takes Bartulis’s spot is a $1.1 mil over pay. So actually it’s a far worse over pay if you consider Foster as the possible substitute at the #5 spot.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Not to attack you specifically but I’m not sure why almost everyone takes Foster as a guy who definitely would have signed here. Just because he was out there and went cheap doesn’t mean he would have definitely signed here. It doesn’t change the fact that Holmgren should have tested free agency to find a #5 before making a trade but Foster wasn’t a gaurantee.
by tmurder on Jul 22, 2010 8:05 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
And just to jump in, I’m not sure why everybody has the “there’s no guarantee player x signs here” defense. No one is claiming that Dan Ellis would have signed here if given an offer, or that Kurtis Foster would have signed here if offered.
But people wanted both here, both went for cheaper than the guys the Flyers signed, so its not that they would have signed here, but that they could have. And the point is that everyone says how great it is to play in Philly and how everybody wants to play here (remember the Hamhuis anger?) yet those same people turn around and say why would they want to come play here? If it isn’t Foster, it could have been Lebda. Or Boychuk. Or Babchuk. Or Jurcina. Or Lydman. Or Leopold.
it’s not about the player named, it’s about any player that signed for less than $4 million and a second round pick.

Not to attack you with this response
But I’m sick of this counter argument.
1) What Geoff said (thanks Geoff)
2) You could sell me on it better (as you mention in your last sentence) if Homer had waited in to free agency to make the trade. The timing of the trade gives the appearance that Homer does not understand how to use FA to his advantage. There were so many players of equal value (and better value per dollar) than Meszaros out there that it seems silly to pull the trigger so early on that trade. Foster simple gives me the best $ amount to use in my example. But look at all the Dman that signed at Tallinder’s number or less, there were a ton, and that would save you at least ~$0.8mil. I just don’t see why he couldn’t wait for the market to reveal itself.
3) Meszaros might be great, and he might perform to his contract, but with our depth at D, we don’t need a $4mil Dman (If Coburn had signed under $3mil I would be a little better with it, but it doesn’t change the fact that he handled this is a way that doesn’t maximize value). Homer should have at least tested the market before going after the trade.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I also used Foster b/c I thought 2 years on a good team with a great D would be better for his next contract in 2 years, rather than 2 years on a weak team, where the holes in his game will be exposed and more obvious. So I thought Foster would fit the Flyers needs, the Flyers would fit his needs, and he is great value for a #5. But, even if he wouldn’t sign here, take one of the several other options (huge market place not explored by Homer).
Is this the right room for an argument?
Except…as posted elsewhere….It appears based on Stevie Y interview and other analysis Homer wanted to dump Gagne all along. Remember that according to Stevie Y the first discussion about a Gagne trade happened as Homer was trading for Meszaros. So in fact there was a link between the trades.
I think the relationship we’ve been citing all along has been wrong. Homer decided that having Meszaros was better than having Simon, and traded that way. This completely follows his stated objective of improving the D. The Walker part only came about because this was a Stevie Y salary dump the other way….that is nearly exactly what he said in the Gagne presser,
Yes I am old. I remember the Phils good old days and their bad old days. Course, the good old days I'm thinking of were in 2009.

…Meszaros better than Simon rather than Zherdev better than Simon. So the analysis is D vs offense, rather than different offensive players.
in that scenario Zherdev >Asham, which he clearly is.
This completely misses the center vs. wing problem, the lack of #1 goalie, and lots of other problems, and the insane cap management let alone the stupid dump Gagne trade. So Homer is still an idiot in this case, but he is an idiot who attempts to plan.

No, he said he would not make the trade without “losing the salary” (or some similar wording) of Walker. So it was a dual salary dump.

That’s the way I always saw this transaction, i.e., Yzerman would only do it if Walker was part of the trade. Since Homer wasn’t in a position to bargain (yes, his own fault, but still), he went through with it.

“I don’t look at it that I traded Simon Gagne making $5.25 million,” Yzerman said. “I traded a player (Walker) that made roughly $1.65 million, so we’re getting a top-six forward for one year (for the difference). Haha. I mean, that Olympic team is stacked, and you would be playing Marty in a bottom 6 role. So it’s probably smarter to invite the younger players there to get them that experience for the future (the Richies and Towes of the team). So I can see why he made that move, even though it may have disappoint you from a fan perspective.

Yeah. I agree. I was very disappointed back in February but I understand it now and see why he did that and invited the players he did. It worked out in the end… :)

As much as I wish he would just to stop all the speculation, I also wonder if Homer doesn’t have another rabbit up his sleeve. All the ‘happy with our lineup’ talk may be a smokescreen. But with the ability to put Cote through waivers, and Bartulis being able to bounce to Adirondack without passing waivers (per CBA expert DragonGirl) we theoretically could go into the season standing pat.
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

Haha, I swear one of these days I’m going to have to make a spreadsheet of who is and isn’t waiver exempt and post it with a paragraph explaining how waivers work. That way I don’t have to summoned all the time.

I totally respect Dragon Girl’s analysis. She is way up on the power curve in comparison to me. But I’m not sure she is right about Bartulis. It does indeed depend in part on the number of games played etc. On that we agree,
The reason I am not sure is that this is getting at how some “silent” portions of the CBA are interpreted, and how different portions of the CBA are interpreted. For example, is Bartulis contract technically an entry level or not? I don’t think so, since it was signed well after he was in the league.
Note that this disagreement between sections and silent portions of the CBA are exactly what the league and Devils are arguing about. When I first downloaded the CBA I was surprised at the clarity of language in the document. Now I understand that while individual words and sentences may be clear, the paragraphs, and especially the intent of the paragraphs, and the linkage between paragraphs, is not.

His new contract isn’t entry level, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still be waiver exempt. An entry level contract can only last for a maximum of 3 years, yet the waiver exemption table for 18 year old skaters goes up to 6 years in some cases. I’ll type a better explanation because I have to go back through everything, but I wanted to get the quick comment out there first.

Understood. And I didn’t mean that you should spend time researching this. After all, even if it is waivers, Bartulis will sail through those. So it probably doesn’t matter.
But it does show that there are serious shoals in the CBA that are uncharted, and if Homer is blowing up the portiions we understand, good luck in the trickier parts. Randy Jones, anyone?

I don’t think he misunderstood the cba in the randy jones situation. He just didn’t think anyone would claim him in the re-entry waivers. Obviously that was totally wrong and the Flyers got screwed.

You're right about the CBA/Jones deal but:
He just didn’t think anyone would claim him in the re-entry waivers. Obviously that was totally wrong and the Flyers got screwed.
That’s absolutely hysterical. The quote that came out was that Homer had multiple teams call him asking about Jones’ availability. Obviously, they wanted to trade for him. Homer said no. Then he offers him to the entire league for half-price. And suddenly, he didn’t think anybody would claim him. When teams are willing to pay Jones’ entire salary AND give up something in return, why wouldn’t teams take him for nothing, and at a 50% discount?

I’m pretty sure GMPH got Walker with the intention of him playing. As many of you noted, if you were just going to bury him in the minors then why trade for him in the first place? I know Yzerman said he wanted to move salary to take Gagne, but that’s even worse from a PHI perspective. Gagne for a 4th is a rip off as is, allowing the other team to force you into accepting a salary dump is just inexplicable.

The new capgeek, Turco, and how I hate unnecessary IT upgrades
Cause usually the upgrades while looking prettier lose important functionality. Sigh.
But while capgeek is less Bud-friendly right now, it appears that capgeek would suggest that even after dumping Simon, just dumping Cote (no problem) and Boosh (which would greatly annoy me) might not get us Turco. That leaves us with about $1.8 iin cap space as far as I can tell with the new software. Would he sign for that, after all this time? Not sure. He might hold on for a later goalie injury.
You also don’t want to take up all of the capspace, in order to “keep your powder dry” so to speak, for other moves later in the season. Well, at least if you are a good GM. :-((
So I expect NOTHING else to happen. (I hear the giant gasps over cyberspace). Just as Homer says, he’d be happy to go into camp as-is. Cote will be on the active roster while Betts is rehabbing, keeping us at the normal 23-player limit.

Well, you’ve assumed they have waived/gotten rid of Walker ($1.7), Boosh ($0.925), and Cote ($0.55). That adds up to $3.175 right there. Just have to state your assumptions
Is this the right room for an argument?
if we were getting turco, waiving boosh is obvious. cote does not have a place on this roster anymore and he even knows it. if we have a seventh dman sitting in the pressbox, why not save money on him and have bartulis there instead? it’s essentially that we can either get a new goalie and waive these people that aren’t playing anyway, or keep them for injury reasons and get no goalie. even though turco is no stud, i would rather have him and leighton switching it up then leighton and boosh.
Well yeah, but you asked the question. And I answered what you were missing, I wasn’t disagreeing…
Also, assuming Walker isn’t on the roster, and Bartulis is, is probably incorrect since Bartulis can clear waivers and be called up if needed for injured. So that leaves your CapGeek analysis off by $1.1mil in my mind.
Cote. I’ll keep saying it: the organization ahs kept him around this long for no reason. I’m not assuming anything until he actually is waived. He should be waived obviously. I just haven’t seen it.
But if I had to point out an error, if you are asking (besides not listing your assumptions, obvious or not), is that Walker will be the 6/7th guy and Bartulis will be on the Phantoms, at least that’s what I think the organization has in mind. And that $1.1mil difference is a big difference, in your proposal.
Is this the right room for an argument?
but my initial question, was directed at bud. i gave a hypothetical situation that could work and it was more rhetorical than anything. i figured everyone could deduce my assumptions if they read any of these threads(sorry). there are obviously other ways to do it and i know that. all the discussions on here are only assumptions because we can’t manage the team, even though we would like to. will they probably keep walker on the roster, yes. but is this the most logical thing to do when leighton and boucher make up your tandem? i don’t think it is. which is what my proposal addressed.
Again, as I may agree with you. I think what Bud said may still be correct, hence why I made reference to the assumptions (sorry I wasn’t more clear). Even though it’s possible, which I think Bud knows it is, he doesn’t think it’s probable, hence why I stated the $1.1mil potential error. Sorry I wasn’t more clear; I should have just put everything in one post, I was just trying to be brief.
Is this the right room for an argument?
bingo. I bet we can get him for 2 million though but he is rumored to be looking for 2.5

I can’t wait until they are forced to trade Sharp. Yes, Bowman says he doesn’t want to do it but no one is taking Campbell off their hands and they still haven’t signed Niemi. Too bad Hawks fans. I hope you get hosed in a Sharp trade like we got hosed
by historywillbemade on Jul 22, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Niemi day is coming (July 29)…will Stan have enough cap room to sign him? He’s going to want just a bit more than the $800,000 he had last season. Word is that dumping Reasoner should get him about $500,000 worth of cap space, and it should keep Sharp at center. Stan told Sharp he wasn’t moving him, so does that leave Kopecky without a chair when the music stops?
by TopShelfTony on Jul 22, 2010 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I still think that Sharp is headed out of town, regardless. It seems the only logical solution for the Hawks is to trade Sharp. Everyone else is pretty much untouchable or a scrub. No one is taking Campbell’s outrageous contract and they want to keep Niemi and it’s probably in Niemi’s best interest to sign before arbitration (where else is he going to find a starting gig, Philly?)

Pretty much. You’re looking at Sharp or Seabrook. Which one would they rather keep? They can probably find someone to take Bolland but it won’t be great value in all likelihood and I’m not sure even that is enough.

Didn’t Bowman tell Sharp he was staying? Not that he didn’t want to move him or that he’d like to keep him, but that he was staying? That was the quote I read. If so, Reasoner going leaves a center spot for Sharp and puts Kopecky in play I think. As for moving Seabrook…wow, what a concept. He and Keith were, umm, a pretty good duo. Kopecky is UFA next summer as well.

I read something to that effect as well, but at some point it’s not completely in Bowman’s control. You can talk about moving other players, but even after putting Huet in the minors they need to open some significant cap space. Aside from Campbell, Seabrook, and Sharp none of the guys they would move will open enough space up. I bet they’d listen on Hossa, but I don’t see him moving; and I definitely don’t see Campbell moving so it’s Sharp or Seabrook. They may figure out a way to keep them, but it’s going to require moving Campbell or Hossa.

They will not trade Seabrook. No chance in hell they entertain that idea. Sure Bowman said Sharp was staying, but he also said he has no idea how he is going to fix the problem. Sharp is probably their most valuable trade cheap as Kopecky won’t get much of a return and no one will want Campbell or Hossa’s contract. I bet he tries desperately to move Campbell, can’t get it done, and has to go back on his word and trade Sharp and add more insult to injury for Hawks fans. Oh well, maybe they should’ve wished that Toews didn’t win Conn Smythe so that they didn’t have to deal with that $3 million bonus against the cap.

He’s going to have to figure something out soon, he’s gotta have room for Niemi at the time of the hearing. Yeah, he can go 10% over since it’s the summer, but that’s still very limited room since they’re at the cap with only 16 people signed (per capgeek).
by DragonGirl0583 on Jul 22, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I also don’t think Seabrook will go. It is MUCH more likely that they let Niemi go if they cannot move Kopecky. Alternatively, I still say Campbell may find himself in the AHL (and the grievance wheel will go round and round).

And they may not have the option to let him go – if the arbitration comes out at less than the Magic Number, they have to sign him.
But yeah, Chicago’s in really fun cap hell. They’re short two forwards, a defenseman, and a goalie (counting Huet as signed), and have about $158k in cap space. Campbell’s contract is deadweight. You could maybe get someone to take Hossa or Keith, since they have (relatively) low cap hits, but they also have contracts for forever. Bolland has too long of a contract at too high a value for what he is. Really, their only trade assets I see that wouldn’t absolutely kill their PR are Sharp and Seabrook.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
If the arbitrator comes down on less than the walk-away number then that’s great for CHI. I’m sure they’d be happy with that scenario in a heartbeat, and may even exercise the option to make it a two year deal.

They have to decide before the arbitration begins how long it will be for. Chicago’s brief to the arbitrator will state whether it’s for a one-year or two-year deal. If they don’t say, it’s automatically one year.

If they shopped Keith someone would snap him up in a second. He’s not an unmovable contract by any means.
I think Bolland is overhyped but that teams will still show interest. I just think he won’t bring a ton of return because he is overpaid (as of his up-to-date performance) for 3-4 more seasons.

Niemi if he had any brains would sign with them before hand. There is no other team looking for starting goaltending now, with the possible exception of the Flyers of course who can’t afford him, so if Niemi wants a job in the NHL he will sign beforehand

And I’ll keep my eyes open for the FanPost but feel free to shamelessly plug it next time you see me around here if I haven’t made my presence known when you get around to posting it.

Let’s start a pool for bragging rights:
I’m predicting Kopecky goes and Niemi and Sharp stay.
by TopShelfTony on Jul 22, 2010 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I think that will be only the beginning (if Niemi ends up re-signing with the Hawks, that is). If Bowman is serious about keeping Sharp and everyone’s intuition here is correct about Seabook (personally, I’m not convinced he is untouchable – his current contract status is perfect for someone to be moved – I know he is absolutely a top-notch defenseman, but the Hawks won’t be able to pay him much of an increase after next season, and he’ll definitely be due one) – oops, very long parenthetical comment – I’ll repeat…
If Bowman is serious about keeping Sharp and everyone’s intuition here is correct about Seabrook (and Niemi ends up staying as well), they are going to have to move Kopecky plus one or two others (e.g., Brouwer and/or Bolland). That would be a LOT of forwards to replace overall for the Hawks, so I’m still thinking that the possibility of Seabrook’s going is just that, i.e., possible. (Obviously, it wouldn’t just be a salary dump – they would get someone of substance back for him who’s slightly more cost-effective.)
So, my tentative prediction using the conditions spelled out above: either both Kopecky and Brouwer go or just Seabrook.

And even moving Kopecky and Brouwer doesn’t clear much space. They’ll need to be replaced, and they have a combined cap hit of $2.225m. Even if you replace them with a pair of minimum salary guys, you’ve only opened up $1.225m in cap space.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Say goodbye to Chicago Patrick Sharp; Stan lied to you.

I agree, which, again, is why I think that Seabrook’s being moved is still a possibility. Kopecky and Brouwer combined don’t clear much cap space and they have already gotten rid of many forwards.
The outcome of Niemi’s situation determines a lot. If they re-sign him, I don’t see how they can avoid getting rid of either Seabrook or Sharp.

Even if they don’t re-sign him, moving Kopecky and Brouwer and Huet (to the minors) would give you $8m to sign 4 forwards, 1 defenseman, and 2 goalies. That’s a huge stretch. Possible? Yes, but difficult.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Indeed.
I’m glad I’m not their GM…

I can’t laugh at the Blackhawks much any longer. The fact is that they were at the feet of 29 other teams begging for them to take on salary. And they got more for their second/third line guys than we got for our top line winger.

The Stevie Y press conference: go ahead, prove that my memory is aging.
Finally on-line.
I think he wasn’t as direct about Walker per se as I remembered (see DLJr, you were right), but he did specifically talk about needing to “relieve myself of a contract that has 2 years to go on it” to get Gagne. “Getting a top six player for the salary going out vs. going in…I’m prepared to do that for one season”
What he says about Gagne is worth the listen. When by a Quebec reporter asked about the Quebecois on the squad and as his coach, Steve says “I look him as a Philadelphia Flyer player” (connoting his quality isn’t as a Quebecker but as a Flyer. Sigh.).
It is also interesting to hear him say on his contract year “we have a motivated player”. They saw the Flyers medical records prior to the trade.
Also that there was no link to the Kovalchuk signing: “total coincidence” .
Interesting discussion about Ellis vs. Nitty.
Also, note for Travis and Geoff: Scott Burnside had no questions for Yzerman when he was polled.

Don’t think it showed up in the podcast. Every reporter apparently pushed Star-1 or something if they had a question. The first guy and the Quebecker asked a question, then maybe someone else. The moderator called (my term: “polled”) Burnside and he said, no questions, mine have been asked. Several others asked very relevant questions after him, including one of the last guys who asked about Simon’s injury history. Seemed weird that Burnside was tapped out that early. I’ve been on those kind of conference calls (business, not sports related) and I guarantee you if they called on me, even if my original question had been asked, I’d of thought of something to say.

I thought that was odd, too; unless he had all the info he needed for his piece except the one question someone asked before him. More likely he dropped his BlackBerry and only managed to pick it up in time to hear: “Burnside, your question?” and froze. =}

The Flyers goal scored by… link is pretty good. They started to lose me with the hot air balloon analogy but they pulled it back together nicely. I liked the poker line. Obviously, it pretty much completely echoes what Geoff and some of the other regulars have been saying, so it’s not exactly breaking news.

FGSB has always been good for a few laughs.
They were the first blog I had started reading before I found BSH. After that, there was no looking back… It’s not that FGSB isn’t always serious but it’s hard to take the other articles seriously at times because of it.
I can relate to that. I bounced around several Caps blogs before finding Japers’ Rink, which is hands down the best Caps blog around. I’m not proud to admit some of the places I regularly read before…

Yeah, I don’t link to them often, but I do read them fairly frequently.
The problem is that they aren’t always… appropriate. They’re unique, which is good, but not always the best read.
