Happy birthday, dude. Darned if seeing that number doesn’t make me feel old.

Damn, Happy Birthday Cuz

Happy Birthday!
Wow, 21. I remember my first beer.
In other news…did anyone read the Zherdev Facts?
Best gift?

Tongue in cheek? Serious? I have no idea what that’s about.

Does this mean..
At the next happy hour, instead of standing at the bar awkwardly with a Sprite, Travis will be be at the bar with a beer, standing there awkwardly…
Is this the right room for an argument?

Happy Birthday Travis! Enjoy it with many a shots!
Can we please stop with the Gagne trade talk now? I am sooooo sick of reading all of these stories reminding us of how we got hosed and how Tampa is laughing at us.
Also, this scared me about the Zherdev piece:
Is hockey a work, game or life to you?
“Work first”
I can see why people are worried about his work ethic. If he is coming to the rink thinking this is work, then he isn’t really enjoying it. I like the players that respond with, “this is life for me and what I love to do.”
"Chris Pronger sneaked in the back door...banged it home."
Flyers Television Play-by-Play Man: Jim Jackson
Looking on the bright side of life
It’s not the worst of the 3 answers.
I’m gonna say over 80 points for Darling Nikki this year. He still may be a minus for the year but I see good things for him in 2011.
"Call me dumb, call me stupid, whatever. I block shots."
As with a few of these answers...
I was hoping something was just lost in the translation with this one and he was actually trying to give the best answer possible. As in “I will put in the work to become a great Flyer.”
I’m optimistic about Zherdev, and I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt here.

Well, see if he says it’s a game, that means he doesn’t take it seriously. If he says it’s his life, we think he never gets away from it and then it will affect his personal life and then end up being worthless during the season because he’s miserable on a personal level.
Do you see how you can interpret any possible answer negatively?
I say, play well, and I don’t care how you view hockey, eh?
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
You like that? I thought I’d Canadian-ize it and then it would go over better.

Where did you come up with this? Did you use an on-line translator?
It took me a while to work through. “Clavatoris” really had me scratching my head for a while. If you translate it classically, it means “cudgel-bearer” – and that is as close to “hitter” as you can get. :)
(For those who are curious, it means “The Designated Hitter rule must be abolished”, very literally, “the law of the designated cudgel-bearer must be rescinded”. :)

Nope, it’s dog latin, I know, since there is no way to actually say “The DH should be abolished,” but in searching for latin phrases online from some more reputable sites, I found this one and thought it was funny.
I’m throwing my BFF’s baby shower in a few weeks and she’s a latin teacher, so there are going to be some phrases like this sprinkled into it somehow. This baby will NOT be brought up a Pittsburgh fan anything. She will be raised properly into Philadelphia sports.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Actually, that’s as close as you can get for saying it in Latin (i.e., it’s perfectly grammatical). I wonder if the website quoted from the Henry Beard books “Latin For All Occasions” (those would be worth finding for your BFF, by the way – those books are funny even if you don’t read Latin, and even funnier if you do).
Still, that was fun to read – thank you. :) (And good on the baby too – don’t need any more Pens fans… :P
(And, phalange, I agree that it would be funnier with “cudgel-bearer” – it would be the DC-B rule instead of the DH rule. :)

Very good point. I didn’t really think out that far with it and you’re right that pretty much any answer can be twisted into something negative. But as you said, as long as he plays well day in and day out, that’s all that matters.
"Chris Pronger sneaked in the back door...banged it home."
Flyers Television Play-by-Play Man: Jim Jackson
well I am not concerned. When he had answers like:
What quality of your character helps you in your work?
“Diligence”
Who would you like to better in your career?
“Myself”
Dream?
“Win the Stanley Cup and Olympic gold”
I think he may have his head in the right place. He wants to improve himself, does dream of a Stanley Cup, and I think if he is dilligent he will work hard. I think maybe a year in Russia cleared his head like Emery. I’ll hope he plays well this season

My favorite quote from the Zherdev quiz:
Greatest athlete?
“Valeri Kharlamov”
I loled at that one b/c Kharlamov is the guy that got destroyed on the Russian team by Van Imp and led to the Russians walking out. Quite ironic. I wonder if Pronger elbows Zherdev, will Zherdev walk out of the team and then have Ed Snider come down and tell him that if he wants to get paid he will play for the Flyers.

Haha that’s funny!! I wonder if he knows Kharlamov got destroyed by the Flyers in that game. I’m sure he does, but I guess he doesn’t have any hard feelings since he signed with us. I am going to read the rest of it but I hope that he is great for us.

Not to mention Clarke … uhh … “tapped” him on the ankle in the Summit Series in 1972. I’m honestly a little surprised he signed with the Flyers if he likes Kharlamov that much, especially considering reports said he had other options. Remember Kirill Kabanov’s quote several weeks ago about having interviewed with every team except the Flyers, because they’re “just a bunch of goons” or something?

The kid was born in 84, He probably like’s Kharlamov b/c of his legacy, not b/c he ever saw him in person. I think we may be getting carried away with this b/c he never was alive to see it. But I agree to a certain extent, there is a black cloud over the Flyers if you are a Russian b/c of the history.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Ouch. That’s not a good perspective for Russian prospects to have.

I don’t think I’ve ever had Czech beer, but there are a couple Polish beers I like.

Polish isn’t Czech. Not even close. Trust me. :P If there’s something I’m proud of, then it’s our beer. But not all of them are that great of course… there are some really bad Czech beers too.

Czech Republic (Prague in particular) rocks. I felt like I was rich when I went over there. Great atmosphere, great food, cheap, and beautiful city.

I went to visit family in Germany a few years ago and at dinner one night they served Budweiser Budvar, which if you’ve never heard of it is a Czech beer that has nothing to do with Anheuser-Busch, just because they thought I’d get a kick out of drinking the original “Budweiser”. It was a little hoppy for my taste, but still far better than it’s coincidentally-named American “counterpart.” :-p
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
Haha, I bet. :D And of course I know Budweiser Budvar. I know my beer… :P I love Pilsner, Svijany, Krusovice… Staropramen, which is beer made in Prague, it’s not bad but gives you headaches the next morning a bit… just like Gambrinus. Anddd… I’d better stop now…

Well I knew you would know what it was. :-p
I should explore beer more. At the moment, my preference is towards wheat beers (hefeweizen, weissbier, witbier, lambic, etc), especially if unfiltered. Malt-ier things like red or brown ale are also quite excellent. But there’s still so much to learn…
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
Czech beers are very good
A bit harder to find in the US, but the mass-produced ones are very enjoyable. I can only imagine that the more local Czech beers are that much better.
Oh, and stop hating on Polish beers! We don’t have much to be happy about, dammit! :P

My 21st.....
will be in a couple of months. Sadly for me, it is a Thursday when I am back at college and I am stuck with a roommate who is a CA and determined to not have alcohol in his department (long story).
Good news for me: I am leaving in a couple weeks to spend a week in England, Ireland, and Scotland. I will be living it up there (plus it will be legal so slightly paranoid and unlucky me won’t have to look over his shoulder every 5 seconds!)
Chris Pronger stole my last signature.

While you are in Scotland, do yourself a favor, and get yourself familiar with single malt scotch.

This this this this this!
Also, it’s a subtlety, but I really liked that much of their beer “on tap” is hand-pumped from a cask, as opposed to our nitrogen or CO2 pressurized kegs. I felt I could taste the beer better (and burp less) without all the extra carbonation. Good stuff, I wish I could find it done that way in the US.

If you are in the Philly area, head to Downingtown, go to Victory Brewing, they usually have a couple beers on hand pump.

A very good friend of mine is the warehouse manager at Victory. Just found out they had Golden Monkey on tap at MacGrady’s up in the valley….

These 21st birthday stories….a little depressing, I’ve been legal to drink for almost 10 years….yet I still get carded for cigarettes every day….
I’m almost 30 and I still get carded for everything. And yet my younger coworkers, when we go to happy hours never do, it’s frustrating as anything. The worst was a week after my 24th bday, I got carded to see a rated R movie, and yet when I got in to the movie, there were still a bunch of unaccompanied 14 year olds…apparently I didn’t even look 14 at age 24.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Mental note to self: In order to prevent myself from getting carded to when I go to an R-rated movie, grow beard to make myself look my age.

It actually works. I grew a goatee when I was 22. Before then I would get carded a lot, even for an R-rated movie, but after then I have never been carded for anything since.

I’m 27 and I still get carded sometimes for R-rated movies. But unless my hair is down, I honestly look like I’m 12 so I’m used to it. Even having my hair down only bumps me up to looking about 19-20, but my mom got carded til she was over 40.
