Fortunately we won’t have to deal with these constant changes after 2025 when the Flyers move into the Bobby Clarke 1974 Commemoratory Arena, featuring a pictorial display that proves the Flyers totally won the Stanley Cup across the street once, and a podium in the concourse for Bernie Parent to promote his trucks or whatever he’s selling on TV then.

It’ll Always Be the FU Center

That always used to make me laugh. I always liked its hyper-abbreviation too: the ‘FUC’. :)

haha yeah. I always call it the FU center, but I never went with FUC… but I like it and may use it.

Stevie Y does it again. Yeah, Durno’s skipped up and down a lot, but that’s a good depth signing for a third or fourth line forward who can play pretty much any position.

I don’t like the movie much, either, FWIW. I just dislike most of the Coen Bros movies in general, although I do like “The Big Lebowski,” and liked it even before it became the cult fave that it now appears to be.

See, we are of the same mind. Coen Bros are an acquired taste, like Baz Luhrman, whom I happen to love. But you either love his style or hate it and I totally understand those who hate it.

Anybody who makes a movie about Australia is going to lose credibility in my books.

No Country for Old Men is one of my favourite movies, so it’s not like I hate all Coen brothers movies. Just the smelly ones.

by ToddtheFox on Jul 27, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the Australia movie was awful, but it’s because he strayed from the musical genre and he just shouldn’t do that IMO. The Red Curtain trilogy was awesome.

Yeah, NCfOM was good, but that’s a later Coen Bros movie. The earlier ones are the ones I don’t like. Barton Fink, Fargo, Raising Arizona (HATE, HATE, HATE this movie), The Hudsucker Proxy, Miller’s Crossing. Meh, I didn’t even like O Brother, Where Art Thou or Burn After Reading.

I hate Nicolas Cage more than I hate the Penguins. The worst move ever made in my opinion is “City of Angels,” because Cage and Meg Ryan are my two most despised actors.

by doubleh on Jul 27, 2010 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, you should hate it because the original film on which it is based, “Wings Of Desire,” is infinitely superior. “City Of Angels” is “Hollywood” in the worst sense of the word.

When they get pulled over? Pretty much whenever the European guy is on screen? Pretty much any time William H. Macy is on screen? The brief cameo by the cross-dressing brother from the Drew Carey Show that needed worms? The awkward dinner with the high school friend?

wow, the acting in this movie is impeccable. it didn’t get 7 academy award nominations for no reason

by phinally on Jul 28, 2010 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Again, Academy Award noms are as much a popularity contest as HS Prom Court noms. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it wrong (see Paltrow, Gwyneth—Cate Blanchett was robbed like Andres Galarraga).

by doubleh on Jul 28, 2010 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

They don’t recognize shit willy-nilly, though. The Oscars aren’t the ultimate test of quality, but they are A test of quality, same as anything else. I’d say it would be very hard to argue against 7 Emmy nominations as objective proof of a film’s quality.

by Snevik on Jul 28, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

See “Titanic”.

Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.

by doubleh on Jul 28, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

my god was the writing and acting in Titanic beyond terrible. Special effects were nice but that’s about it. It took years and years of great acting in great movies to salvage Leo’s image

by historywillbemade on Jul 28, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Nominated for Winslet, the old lady, and make-up. Won for set direction, cinematography, costume, director, sound effects, visual effects, editing, dramatic score, Celine Dion, best picture, best sound.

Of those, I think only best picture and Celine Dion are really that debatable. The former was criminal, as it beat out Good Will Hunting and LA Confidential. The latter is understandable, but it would have been nice to see Elliott Smith get it.

Overall, it confirms what I thought of the movie: very well put together, not my cup of tea.

by Snevik on Jul 28, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed…not really seeing Titanic as a great counter argument even though it wasn’t for me.

Is this the right room for an argument?

by DLJr on Jul 28, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it’s a good counter argument—it was a popular movie at the time that won’t stand the test (of time). Did not deserve all the noms it received and esp not best picture.

How about “Forrest Gump” then? “Shawshank,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Quiz Show,” and hell, even “Four Weddings and a Funeral” were all superior films. And the one guy who really deserved the Oscar for that movie, Gary Sinise, didn’t win!

Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.

by doubleh on Jul 28, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

See Snevik’s response. I agree with everything he wrote, and would be my response to this, since it doesn’t really provide a counter to what he stated.

I also disagree with the test of time perspective. But regardless I don’t really care much about this topic. I just thought Snevik presented a good case, and I agreed with him. I’m sure other people agreed with you as well. For me, Snevik’s POV won out.

PS: Fargo was great IMO

Is this the right room for an argument?

It’s OK to like it, I do, too—but my point was that it was just a really popular movie that won the ultimate popularity contest, which is all the Oscar’s really are. SAG awards are better, because they are awarded by the actual entertainers and not an awards panel.

Oh well, I don’t really care about the Oscars anyway. I mean, I’m interested, yes but until Johnny Depp is awarded by the Academy, I won’t give them much credit. That man should have won it like… long ago.

If you go to look at the logo, make sure to check out the update gallery. The posted picture in the link is a bit off on tone – the red is a darker, rustier looking color, and the silver is more chrome than grey. NHL.com also shows it with a white background, which is a little less overwhelmingly red.

Wells Fargo

We need to somehow add a “T” in the middle there, so we can call it the WTF Center.

Maybe we should just skip the specific name and call it the “Bank Merger Center.” Or the MAC (Mergers and Acquisitions Center)?

there we go!!!! They have taken over Wachovia who took over First Union who was Core States (or something like that, I don’t know which were buyouts or mergers or whatever).

So I guess somebody should make a poll and see if we like the WTF center or WFC more.

I hope Meszaros doesn’t make a lot of turn-overs, but we can add that since it’s a hockey term and works nicer.

There it goes :( Our longest tenured name in the series of bank take overs and mergers now we’re at Wells Fargo.

Wikipedia is fast, already the article is the Wells Fargo center. Before they even changed the name on the building!!!

Yeah, but there’ll probably be a revert war until the new sign goes up, because of differing opinions on when the name really changes.

by The Dark on Jul 27, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably, I don’t know. I honestly added that because I wasn’t sure if it had Wachovia Center or First Union center longer so I checked and saw the article was changed. I did see on the page a few months ago that they were planning on calling it the Wells Fargo center.

And I guess they didn’t change it fast at all, I haven’t been to the page for a bit. So I guess now if it was announced before… why are they taking so long to take down the old sign??? They only have 2 months before there are games in the building again, and if it took almost a month to take it down, then to put the new one up… we may have the Wachovia Fargo Center in places lol. /joking

That happened a couple of weeks ago I think, according to the history redirect to the new URL was changed July 6th. CSN had been reporting that the name change was official on the 1st of July, even though we now see reports that it’s today.

Lastly, Alexander Frolov is looking to sign with the Rangers, but his agent has an interesting comparable: Maxim Afinogenov. Nik Zherdev? Nah.

Well, Zherdev was the guy awarded so much money in arbitration that the Rangers walked away. Might have been just a wee bit of shooting himself in the foot to remind them of that.

That Down Goes Brown article was hilarious!! All of the things to do with the cup are funny, and about a Blackhawk getting traded, just icing on the cake.

I think my favorite was:

You’re likely to meet fans who will want to take photos of their children or grandchildren sitting in the bowl of the Cup. For reference, the Cup can safely hold the weight of one large toddler, two small babies, or three Montreal Canadiens forwards.

But that was hard to pick, the rest are funny, good laugh if people haven’t read it yet.
