Wednesday Morning Fly By: Just Don't Care About the Winter Classic
Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...
- Look for the newest BSH radio to come out later today where we interview Frank Seravalli of the Daily News.
- Yesterday was Winter Classic Media Day, which means the logos were unveiled: [icethetics]
- Maxime Talbot called Alex Ovechkin a douche and David Steckel says the road to make it out of the East runs through Pittsburgh or D.C. [philabright]
- The publicity stunt of the day? Shooting pucks through the uprights: [Puck Daddy]
- Alexei Ponikarovsky signed with L.A. [Jewels From The Crown]
- Scott Hartnell gives some quotes on Simon Gagne leaving: [Frequent Flyers]
- Jewels from the Crown is banned at In Lou We Trust, so instead of commenting, they're posting stories. If their coverage of the Kovalchuk saga didn't get you to read them, you should start. [Jewels From The Crown]
- Lastly, NHL 11 will have video goal review. This could be awesome or infuriating. But in the video at the bottom, try to spot Nicola Riopel. [Puck Daddy]

So is NHL 11 going to have some percentage of goals that it knows are good called no-goals on the ice so they can then be overturned?
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
unless you are the away team playing in Pittsburgh. The cheat code can be enter so goals that are good will be called no-goals do to lack of replay evidence.
And all of Gagne’s goals that get reviewed will get called back no matter what they added that feature prior to the trade and will be unable to take it out even thought the producers know that since Gagne is no longer wearing Orange and Black his goals would stand.
One more thing too to pile on. Any puck that hits off Coburn while he is performing a shot block attempt will go in his net. I am preparing to move Coburn to forward and use him to block my own shots from the point to exploit this.
I’m pretty sure one of the older NHL games had disallowed goals in it. This was back in the “foot in the crease” heydey I believe.
Talbot called Ovechkin a douche? Hahahahahahaha. Pot, meet kettle.

Seriously...
Put the 2 of them together with Marc Savard and you could have the “Summer’s Eve Line”

Can we send Quisp some sort of gift when this Kovalchuk situation is over (perhaps one of those Christmas tree Devils jerseys with Kovalchuk’s name on it)? It’s awesome to see the attitude of ILWT being unveiled to more and more people.

It’s truly a great thing, isn’t it?
“You should! You totally should!” was my favorite part.

Yeah
its getting pretty heated with Quisp and ILWT. Its like arguing with a child that REALLY wants their ball.

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.
Remember, those weren’t “Boosh” chants you were hearing during the Flyers/Devils series, it was the 20,000 super-dedicated Devils fans expressing their displeasure with their team.
Haha
Nice.

As a Kings fan…thank you for saying this. Listening to them decry his lack of civility while they insulted him right and left made me feel I’d stepped into bizarro world.
I have to say, I never disliked the Devils before this point. Now it’s a very dear wish of mine that the Flyers continue to meet them in the playoffs and thoroughly crush them.

Oh man, John Fischer is a Nazi. I remember him threatening and banning his own readers during coverage of the Kovalchuk trade in February, when they were speculating on what prospects the Devils were sending to Atlanta.
Dude has some serious control issues.

Winter Classic
Does anyone else think it’s BS that the pens are in a second Winter Classic?
Someone’s been reading Latin For All Occasions, I see.

This roughly translates into “The designated hitter rule ought to be removed.”

Working on my BFF’s baby shower and she’s a latin teacher. This is one of the quotes I liked best.

Here at BSH, we should be saying things like “Huic venit Zambonis.”
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Tons, actually.
I can understand the need for the NHL to use the WC as a marketing gimmick, nothing wrong with that.
But I feel like they could do that without constantly including the Pens.
Exactly.
I can see the fact that not every team will get to be in the Winter Classic since there are more marketable teams than others, but the Penguins being in only 3 years apart with the Capitals. I was expecting the Caps this year though, and the Penguins are just Bettman’s favorite team so he has to have it at Heniz Field. I’m sure there will be an uproar if the Pens are in it again in 3 seasons.
I do like that this year there is an outdoor game in Canada, I hope that becomes a tradition every year as well.

Yup, total Bullshit, which is why I am not tuning in.
I am not prepared for the verbal fellatio that will be going on when Crosby AND Ovechkin are playing each other.
You ain't a has-been, if you never was.

No love for your new Trivia Champ?
Just kidding. I got lucky in that I knew a lot of the questions that Ben missed. That was fun, but I don’t expect to be so fortunate next time.

Dude. Seriously. There’s no suspense in it now…you’ve taken away my one good thing! Haha.

haha, I just put a teaser for the show, allowing Travis to put the trivia teaser in the post with the show. Two-step process.

I thought the road to the cup for Pittsburgh and Washington stops in Montreal.
by historywillbemade on Jul 28, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, but that road is short being that the eastern conference champs were Olli Jokanin’ed into the playoffs.
I guess having to survive a shoot out in order to play in the SCF is better than being the Sharks of the east.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I would give the Flyers more credit than just surviving the shoot-out.

My response to Mr. Steckal.
One finalist always goes through Washingtion.
After winning Game 7 at the Verizon Center as the road team.
Keeping Rocking Red.
I would tell to tell your Dad to go fuck himself.
But I know by now his eyesight must be so bad that he couldn’t possibly find his own asshole.
That was Leon Stickle, not Steckel. Cost that team the chance to force a game 7 at the Spectrum…and you weren’t winning a game 7 at the Spectrum if you were the away team…

Do you remember Snider’s rant to the media after that game? Woo, boy, was he pissed.

I never heard it, anybody have a link for a video for that?
Still my least favorite NHL call of all time. As Ben says, you weren’t winning a game 7 at the Spectrum, so what could have been….

The JtfC vs ILWT battle is getting a little ridiculous. Isn’t Quisp smart enough to realize the two sides aren’t going to agree and just give up.

I dunno but I hope it keeps going. I’m learning a lot of fancy words from it like “deign” and “disingenous” and that excites me.

They’re also doing a really good job of block quoting and responding. it keeps their back and forth very easy to follow. However, it doesn’t stop them from looking childish.

Totally OT
But Dom Brown called up to the Phils. Wearing #9, playing RF. Vic on 15 day DL.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
Guess that means all hopes off getting oswalt are gone.
by tmurder on Jul 28, 2010 2:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Don’t want him. Too much money and he’s old. We have enough old people on our roster. If we do go out and overspend for a guy like Oswalt, then it will completely undo everything Amaro said he was trying to accomplish with Lee trade. I was OK with the Lee trade, aside from not getting best haul we could get (another conversation), but if he goes out and gets Roy Oswalt and we give up a crapton of money and prospects to get him, I’ll help all those folks with their pitchforks.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
They need more starting pitching because Roy Halladay sucks because he’s barely over .500 and Cole Hamels is a girl!
/WIP’d (no offense about the girl thing)
Contributor at The Brotherly Game, SBN's Philadelphia Union blog
Yeah, I know—my Dad the other day says “Cliff Lee is a better than Halladay,” and I just shook my head. I love Pop, but he toes that traditional Philly party line like nobody’s bness and he doesn’t even listen to WIP! I say, Dad, the stats say otherwise. Whatever, Lee is a great pitcher—don’t get me wrong, I wish we had him—but so is Roy freaking Halladay! You can’t field an entire starting rotation of CY pitchers and hope to contend, unless you’re the Yankees with an unlimited budget. Just ask the Braves who did it with no regard for their BP or bench for years.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
No, but he’s an old 32 who’s got chronic back problems. I’m fine with it if we don’t have to give up much to get him and we aren’t forced to pick up his 2011 $16mm option, but that’s the only way I do it. Otherwise, I’d prefer an under-the-radar pickup that won’t cost much. Looks like the Phils are looking at Carmona or Westbrook.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
also, didn’t he say he didn’t even want to play here? i think i heard them talking about that on PGL or something..
No, he said he would prefer to get traded to a team closer to his home in Mississippi, but would welcome a trade to a contender.
You ain't a has-been, if you never was.
Oh, he’ll come here only if we pick up his $16mm option. No, thanks. We’re going to have other needs next year, like what to do about SS, OF, BP, bench.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
The whole team is getting old so I’d rather see them try to gear up for the next couple of years rather hold onto prospects. The only prospect I’m not trading is Brown because he’s going to take Werth’s spot next year.
by tmurder on Jul 28, 2010 3:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
A pitcher who is requiring cortisone shots in this back and is making $16 mil a year (?) is just bad news.

That’s exactly why this is so funny.

Man...
I don’t know if its me or what (probably is) but people have really been bringing out the big guns and dropping big words, fancy degrees and multiple languages…talk about feeling inferior. I tried keeping up with the JFTC argument but talking about paradoxes and the legalities of contracts makes my eyes cross. Just a quick little rant. Now to talk about the news today….
1. Yeah, not too crazy about the Winter Classic…I posted my thoughts when I first heard about it months ago.
2. If Talbot knows one thing, its a douche! (he’s one, the pens are d-bags)
3. Pens lose another winger, getting weaker by the minute.
4. Harts speaks the truth (except the whole, “its never bad to have too many D-men”
5. JFTC and ILWT are spatting, reminds me of a week or so ago with BSH arguing with SCH over a sammich.
6. NHL 11 might become most frustrating hockey game to date…
and that my friends, is the straight talk.
Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.
