Ilya Kovalchuk Has Received An Offer From the Flyers
Just posted it to SBN Philly. And now I'm thinking that Gagne and Carter could be gone.

Gagne perhaps
If this is true, I’m going to assume that the Flyers offered less than max, since Kovalchuk wants a chance at a cup, and they can’t gut the team for one player. With that said, it certainly gives us that elite wing everyone has been complaining about.
As I said in the update on SBN Philly, there are reports that Carter could be traded for J-S Giguere. We’d give up Gagne and Carter for Kovy and J-S. Thoughts?

Salary still wouldn’t quite work out. Gagne and Carter add up to $10,250,000. Giguere alone would cost $6,000,000, and assuming you drop Boucher, Cote and Bartulis, you’re left with $6,902,738 to sign Kovalchuk and re-sign Powe and Carcillo (or find two forwards to replace them).
I never looked at the salary figures, just want has been reported by writers on twitter. Thanks for the clarification, Ben.

Don’t think so. More and more I’m starting to think that when they said they aren’t moving Carter, they actually meant it — at least until the trade deadline. They think, and quite frankly I agree, that Carter has been one of the major reasons for the success the team has had in the last 3 seasons.
I know the Flyers aren’t going to compete with a 100m offer for Kovy, although they may have a rental offer on the table. Unless Kovy wants to go to a crap team like the Isles, he’s not going to be able to have his cake and eat it too. If he ends up signing a deal like that, he might as well go back to Atlanta.
Yeah, I am sure this is just speculation. If Kovalchuk is on the Flyers by next season he will have to be on a line all by himself because I don’t know how we could fit the entire roster under the cap.

You’re assuming that they matched the 100m offer, and I don’t see that happening. The Flyers would be the laughing stock of the NHL. When an agent says that all the offers are “about the same” you know he’s lying, but then again you knew that because the agent was talking to the press in the first place.
I’ll admit I’m having a hard time believing that offer is for real. Kovy’s a great player but the Flyers have no cap space of any sort at the moment.
Acquiring Kovy and trading both Carter and Gagne away sounds like filling one hole only to be creating 2 holes.
Trading Carter even up to a team that has a surfeit of wingers, like the Washington Capitals would make more sense than acquiring Kovy.

It doesnt create two holes just one. In the Finals Carter and Gagne were on a line with Richards. Trading both of them means Richards needs two wingers. Enter Kovy who becomes Richards LW. They still need a RW. Obviously the Flyers would get a lot back if both Gagne and Carter were traded, amd they would probably be traded to seperate teams because I can’t imaging there would be a team willing to take on 10.25 mil in salary without shedding any.
Okay, the Flyers sign Kovy and gain one player. They trade away Carter and Gagne and lose two players. So a net loss of one player.
I agree that they would be traded to separate teams. I’m sure they could get a lot for both Carter and Gagne but getting enough in return and getting it to all work due to salary cap reasons would be tricky.
They currently have .5 Million in cap space, have 12 forwards, 7 defensemen, and and 2 goalies under contract. I assume they would sign one spare forward; e.g. Asham or Powe since even Carcillo’s salary from this past season exceeds the cap.
Kovy is obviously going to be uber expensive to sign. I assume would sign for at least $8 Million for a long term. Gagne and Carter together make 11 Mill. So that leaves 2-3 million at most for another player and are there enough cheap players out there who would be worth 3 million max. Is there any team willing to cough up a good draft pick for Gagne?

Don’t get me wrong, Kovy’s a superstar (albeit one who’s asking for too much money). Even though we shut him down, I was somewhat impressed with Kovy against NJ. Also, it would be nice having that player who as soon as he touches the puck can make something happen.
BUT
Getting rid of Gagne and Carter, two of our best two-way forwards, for a guy who doesn’t play defense, might be going backwards. Gags and Carter are proven goal scorers who can play defense. The way we are structuring our team is an elite defense with solid goal scoring. I think Gags and Carter fit right into that structure. Kovalchuk…not so much.

Agent speak is always dubious to me. Although it is odd that his agent would pick a team like the Flyers, with no cap space to spend, to leak a rumor about.
