Arthur from Anaheim Calling, the SBN Ducks site, has done a bit of a writeup on a Carter for Bobby Ryan proposal. His proposed trade is a bit far-fetched but it's an interesting insight into the perspective of the other team.

It’s nice to see we’re not the only ones who think Carter is logistically the best forward to move…

It’s actually meant as a thought experiment to encourage Ducks fans to consider uneven trade proposals where they would be fine with losing Bobby Ryan, probably settling on something realistic. I’d liken it to imagining situations where you’d be comfortable splitting up with your girlfriend and slowly getting more comfortable with the idea of dumping her.

If you consider it seriously, it works in terms of contract utility, though not necessarily in terms of player value. I think that could be fixed by throwing in a cheap player and/or pick on the Ducks side, but I wasn’t really seriously considering the trade, just theorizing what it would look like to trade Ryan to a team that needed him and getting something uneven in return.

It was an nice writeup, and an interesting read. I called it ‘far-fetched’ only because Bobby is an RFA, and hence his value isn’t as high as it would be if he had a year left in his contract like Carter because he could still hold out money-wise (and teams are now under the impression that they would have to pay him 5+) and he could still be prone to offer sheets. Hence you would have little hope of getting someone like Carle or Coburn in return together with Carter.

I think if one is comparing Bobby Ryan to Jeff Carter as players and ignoring the free agency, then it’s a fairly even swap, but age probably gives Bobby the edge. Including free agency considerations means a signed 5 million dollar Carter is more valuable than an unsigned ‘who knows how much he wants?’ Bobby Ryan.

I’d actually argue that Carter is worth less to us. I doubt Bobby plays holdout with his hometown when they can afford to pay him, or even resorts to demanding a contract that stops the day he goes UFA. You guys probably get him at Carter’s cap hit for at least four years, not to mention the feel good story of his homecoming.

Carter, on the other hand, has only one year of RFA after next year, and if he wants out, he can probably get it. So, in RFA terms, you guys are guaranteed four years of RFA time with a second overall pick. We’d only be getting one contract year and one year of RFA time with an 11th overall pick. That’s why I threw in Carle, who goes UFA in two years. We’re guaranteed four total years, just as you guys are with Bobby. You can say that we shouldn’t be so cheap as not to pay Carter market price, but we’re a budget team; we can’t always afford to pay the guy what’s he’s worth on the open market.

Good points with the years, but I see a guy like Halak being traded to a team like St. Louis where they are guaranteed to have the cap space to sign him, and he is basically vastly undervalued in the trade. I guess the Flyers’ hometown discount could work against them as well as for them though, simply because teams would expect Bobby to want to sign with the Flyers. However, I wouldn’t really use where they were picked as a measurement of anything at this stage, because
a) it’s been seven years since Carter was drafted, if they redraft 2003 now he would probably be even higher than the #11 (of course Mike Richards would be a lot higher than his #24)
b) 2003 was the deepest draft ever, and in any other year Carter would probably be a top 5 pick anyway
c) people change, and Carter has scored 45+ goals once before and could do it again, he still has nice upside

In the end, none of this is very likely to happen now though, things are getting way too crazy around here…

where they were drafted isn’t a measurement of their present value as players, but it’s a measurement of what you’re giving up in terms of asset in RFA years. Obviously, 2003 was a deep deep draft class, but if you have a 2nd overall pick who turns out to be an NHLer and you’re sacrificing four of his RFA years, you’re going to want four years of playing time out of whatever you get. That pick was your sole reward for tanking a season; it’s hard to let it go for nothing.

That thinking is actually pretty prevalent with the Ducks, as they’ve been more willing to give up NCAA free agent signings (McDonald, Kunitz, Penner) than drafted players, so it is representative of front office thinking.

Carter is worth more than Ryan.

It would have to be for Ryan and something else – a winger, a defenseman, a couple picks.
