Anyone else get the feeling that this is just going to be a tortuous offseason?
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
I hope it’s torturous because we all can’t wait for hockey season to start.
Honestly, the jury’s still out. Homer and Lavy managed to shine shit this past season, somehow. We can only watch and wait.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I agree. Let’s see what develops.

User-controlled celebrations? Yes please. Its the little things like this that make NHL games fun
Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!

Yes but it doesn’t teach good sportsmanship because if you try a Ovie my stick is a fire celebration at virtually any level in hockey you should be leaving the ice on stretcher in my opinion. But hey it is a video game but they should put a disclaimer on the box or something.
Don’t try this on Ice.
Blah. I like seeing celebrations, as long as it isn’t in the face of/antagonizing your opponent. Everyone needs to lighten up (Here’s looking at you Roger Goodell)

Not necessarily. In that instance, Ovie could’ve been indicating that he’s been hot lately, or its his lucky stick, helping him score a lot of goals – I don’t know. I’m just saying, lighten up on the celebration hatefests.

If you don't like celebrations after goals (etc.)
Then stop them from scoring.
"Call me dumb, call me stupid, whatever. I block shots."
Thank you

Agreed
However, I will say, that in the NFL, some players have a habit of overdoing it just a tad. I don’t really want to see that happen in the NHL.

Act like you been there before. A fist pump is fine that is minor stuff but dancing is totally uncalled for.. You aren’t even supposed to celebrate in front of the goalies crease, it is an unwritten rule to move to the corner and celebrate. These unwritten rules and the code of hockey are what I love about the game. The players police these rules and they stand firm from one generation to the next no matter no exceptions. That is why guys like Jody Shelly and the late great Bod Probert get contracts, they enforce the unwritten rules and keep everyone honest.
Hockey is a warriors game that should be played with honor and respect. Just ask Lappy.
I’ll slightly disagree … Yes you can stop them from scoring … but more to the point I think chrislanci was trying to get at: If you want respect demand respect.
If someone wants to disrespect your team (especially in your building) by showboating a goal make them pay a price. Punish them enough and they will think twice about doing it again. There are plenty of ways to celebrate and celebrate big during a game while not disrespecting your opponent.
Yes, potentially paralyzing someone for life is a totally reasonable response to a goal celebration.
Do you seriously think that kids should be receiving lessons on sportsmanship from video games?
Definitely agree.

I am going out on a limb here since I can’t read minds … but I think the “leaving the ice on stretcher” was more of a metaphor.
Should kids learn respect and sportsmanship from a video game? Shit they don’t learn it anywhere now a days so why not in a video game. I mean if GTA is responsible for every hooker’s death and Doom is responsible for every school shooting since since the early aughts, then video games have such a tremendous influence on the fragile minds of our youth and you should program every bit of sportsmanship into the game since their parents aren’t teaching them

This is great...all from a video game clip
First of all, when have video games ever promoted good sportsmanship. Video games are entertainment, and it’s just another way friends can rip on each other…all good fun.
As far as celebrations, kids go out of control with celebrations in hockey already without this stuff in games, so I don’t think NHL 11 is going to lead to some new generation of show-boaters in hockey. There was a tournament before my last hockey game, 8 and 9 year olds. This kid got an assist on a meaningless goal, and he did the little Briere celebration 3 times…3 times. I don’t think anyone feels Briere’s celebrations are excessive, but kid’s can take them to a new level. I don’t think a video game is going to hurt.

LOL
Afterall, I was just excited about something so small.

Wait, you mean things that happen in video games don’t translate exactly to real life?
That doesn’t explain why the NHL94 “left to right deke” doesn’t result in an automatic goal every time I try to use it while playing pickup.
Actually, they had these in the NHL series before. I think in NHL 98 you could do a certain amount of celebrations, like the shooting-the-rifle, riding-the-pony, bow and arrow, etc.
Yeah, I remember that. Not sure which year it was.

Mark Recchi was a Flyer … NHL 2000 or NHL01 maybe … I remember every time he would score he’d put his stick between his legs and yell “You know it!” … so very creepy
how about instead of ‘make your own celebrations’ they make it so no one can glitch like mofo’s and actually play the game like it is suppose to. EA got the best NHL game but with all the glitching, lag switches, not being able to check a dude hugging the boards with boardplay (that needs fixed for sure), stats that don’t seem to make a difference etc….many areas to tighten up before expanding into celebrations and broken sticks. Better be able to check people into the bench.
Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.
If it was up to me, I'd free Charles Manson... -MRH
Those are all issues, but I feel like they try to work on those in parallel to coming up with new things as well. NHL 10’s glitches were definitely better, and board play was a cool new feature they added. They will make improvements as they move forward. It’s one of the best sports games hands down. Only thing I’ve played that I think comes close is the UFC game…I’m not in to fighting games, but that game is sick, even my gf loves it haha.
most of EA’s development teams on NHL play online. They know about what goes on…I think they should do semi-annual updates that fix some of the glitches so people don’t abuse it. That’s the gripe really, people abuse it and makes it no fun for people trying to just play for fun.
Getting beat like 8-1 because you don’t glitch like some people do is kind of frustrating. Not gettting beat from a better effort, just know how to cheat better.
Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.
If it was up to me, I'd free Charles Manson... -MRH
That makes sense. I don’t play online really. I only have a few friends in to hockey, and I usually have them over, or go over their place to play, and no one uses glitches. But it definitely ruins part of the game.
yeah its great when no one does that (couple times whatever)….just when its the same shot every time they come down the ice…its just pointless to play. That’s why I jumped to D, I usually do a good job shutting that stuff down but can’t stop em all.
Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.
If it was up to me, I'd free Charles Manson... -MRH
We used to play seasons of Tecmo Bowl on the Super Nintendo when I was in college. The guy who actually owned the game and system would either win every year or come close to it because he could cheat better than everyone else. It was awful. He would always say, “Hey, if the game allows you to do it, then there’s nothing wrong with it!”

I wish this whole gagne saga would sort itself out quickly. Last I read Kings are now interested again, after losing interest. Now i read that Flyers still have a chance at Nabby and that Nabby isn’t close to signing with KHL. Hopefully, after Kovy signs somewhere the rest will work itself out quickly

Blues Doug Armstrong wastes no time getting ex- Canadian playoff hero Jaro Halak signed, sealed delivered. Done 4 yrs 15M. 3.75M cap/hit
Seems to me like he wasted a lot of time, but…

haha, truth.
That’s probably not a bad deal, actually. I mean, it’s a little much, but not GASP money.

I’m impressed they got him under $4mil. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he is worth more than $3mil, but I’m impressed given what players are expecting to get paid, that they got it done for under $4mil.
so what does that make a Turco or Nabby worth right now? I think that they could be had for 2.5 million and 3-3.5 million respectively
by historywillbemade on Jul 6, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Well the Blues traded for Halak as an RFA, so I think that makes his contract a bit different. It depends on what happens in the market place. No one is knocking down the doors for either of them, and the KHL apparently didn’t go well for Nabby. The longer it goes, the less either of them should be offered. I think Nabby’s value peaks at $3.5 and goes down from there, and Turco’s peaks at $2.5 and decreases from there. At this point, I’d say they might be down to $3mil and $2mil, but it only takes one. Heck, I though Coburn and Michalek both shouldn’t exceed $3mil,a nd both did. Granted, Michalek was unrestricted, but $4mil blew my expectations away. So clearly my guess has absolutely no value.
I would have been estatic to get Nabokov at 3MM a year for 2 years…
not sure what that would have meant for the cap, say had we done that prior to FA opening…maybe we don’t trade for Mesarzos?

Well I’m still hoping we can pull off a Gagne($5.25m) for Simmonds(821K), Nabby ($3million), Powe (~600k), and Carcillo (1.2 m), pretty even in terms of $. If not the Flyers could then waive Boosh (925k) and Cote (550k) to free up w/e space they need so:
Gagne (5.25)Boosh (0.925)Cote (0.550)=6.725 million
Simmonds (0.821)Nabby (3)Powe (0.600)+Carcillo (1.2)=5.621 million
so with Nabby at 3 million and Simmonds as the return (taking into account waiving Boosh and Cote) for Gagne we’d fill out our roster and improve in net

take this with a grain of salt (mainly b/c the source thinks everyone overpays goalies) but behindthenet says the following about nabby’s current value in an article about Halak’s new contract : " it seems like Nabokov might have trouble getting much more than $3M on the UFA market."
That works for me. Lets get it done Homer

Probably at the Nashville law firm where he is Of Counsel.
Scroll down. He is no longer “The Grim Reaper.” He is now “A. Stuart Grimson,” please.

Kim Johnsson is still dealing with a concussion he suffered earlier this year and is apparently considering retirement.

Hey it could be worse. Look at NJ. If they sign Kovalchuk for the rumored amount they will be $3.8 million over the cap next season and have to gut their team, and then Parise contract comes up next season and they cap will hit them again.
At least Homer seems to be playing the market (hopefully will get Nabby or Turco on the cheap) and has an insurance policy (Leights) in his pursuit of the goalie he wants. Flyers are waiting to trade Gagne first and then sign one of the big goalies left, unlike NJ who will have no leverage in trading whoever they need to trade to clear space for Kovy.Even if Flyers fail to trade, Gagne they don’t have that much work to do to make cap and resign who we need (waive boosh, cote, let carcillo walk; wouldn’t be ideal but is workable)
Or we could be Chicago which won the cup but had to sell off 6-7 players so far and still have players to sign and probably another player to axe.
