That’s a good question. Not sure, but I will say Hall of Fame is a lot better than Ring of Honor.

I wast typing the same thing!
Cant the Flyers trust fans to pass the lore of great players my word of mouth…or the internet?
I had a problem with this when the Hammer was getting his “gold star” as an inductee into the Flyers Hall of Fame
I never needed him to be included to love his accomplishments.
Im sure he was aware that the fans always loved him before he got inducted.
Same is true for all of them
Mark Howe, and the rest of them.

I think it’s as much for the players as the fans. It’s nice for Schultz, Hextall, et al to stand there and get those ovations.
Now if they did it posthumously Id think it would be an incredibly fantastic honor
All they need to to is have the Camera shine on them and the Fans will give a standing O
We do that anyway.
Its a cheep way to make $$$ of a circle jerk

I’m not sure the Flyers are making any money off the FHF celebrations. No one is confusing the celebration of Hextall’s career with Stanley Cup; these players are meaningful in their own way, and I have no problem with recognition of that.
Rule # 1 Snyder always makes a buck. (and I dont have a problem with that. He is either a Barnum or a Bailey of the NHL and has done a lot for the league and this club)
I love Hextall and the other guys.
I celebrate their greatness by telling stories and sharing memories as much as another fan who truly loves them.
I also dont have a problem with them having Special fan appreciation nights or letting them have some time under the spotlight
I just dont buy into the Hall of Fame

I think they are also a way for the Flyers to keep the names of the past families integrated with the current ones. One thing the Flyers do well is with regard to player treatment and celebrating their history. Almost every player not named Eric Lindros has had glowing things to say about being part of the Flyers org as being one of the best in the NHL. To Snider and Co, these guys aren’t just hockey players; they are family. When members pass (retire), they become more celebrated. This is a way to tout their individual achievements and what they gave to the organization.

I see that, I recognize it, and Love the Flyers and Snyder for doing that!
I like how the Flyers do make it a Family affair in manny of the ways
But I think the the Hall of Fame fails.
I think its a mistake and cheep.
But the Flyers are not going anywhere!
They will be around for a long time.
Trying to build a rich history to quickly makes it cheep!
What are we going to do when they pass away?

If I had tickets or an opportunity to go to another one, I would go and cheer and have a good time!
The flyers have never paid me to make a decision for them, and unfortunately I doubt they ever will.
Its just my opinion on the the decision to have one.
I see the positive side as well, and those players do deserve every acknowledgment they get!

trying to find something interesting to discuss that doesn’t involve selfish Kovalchuk or overpaying our starting goalie

Nabby gone Turco is the last duck standing. We weren’t paying Nabby 6million or anything close to it. Time to stop bitching about Leighton’s contract now. We could have sat here waiting and still be holding our dicks in our hands with Boucher and Backlund as the starting tandem. Truly forced to overpay for Turco or Leighton if he didn’t get picked up by another team.
Well he isn’t the LAST duck … Josh Harding is still a RFA and I’m kinda surprised The Flyers haven’t made some kinda play to either sign him or pick up his rights. Personally I’d think Leighton and Harding going into next season would be a good combo. Neither has expressly proven that he can be a starter but they both could be the next guy with Harding having more hyped potential.
Give me a little while. There is a lot of stuff happening right now with Tweet rumors (I think I hate Twitter now more than ever). Plus I have to compare him to Pavelec or Niemi and what each would want salary wise, and if we have the draft picks required for compensation.
Lot to think about…actually I may never get tot his hahaha
We can’t make an RFA offer because we lack the picks as compensation. Not for Harding but for Niemi no way.
Flyers don't have a 2nd rounder in 2011 (Carcillo trade)
No draft picks for offer sheets with a value of $1,020,348 or below.
3rd round pick for offer sheets with a value between $1,020,348 and $1,545,981.
2nd round pick for offer sheets with a value between $1,545,981 and $3,091,963.
1st and 3rd round picks for offer sheets with a value between $3,091,963 and $4,637,944.
1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for offer sheets with a value between $4,637,944 and $6,183,925.
Two 1st, a 2nd and 3rd round picks for offer sheets with a value between $6,183,925 and $7,729,907.
Four 1st round picks for offer sheets with a value of over $7,729,907.
I’m not saying the Flyers should for that price. I am just saying what I would offer in that case had I had the option.
… and the Flyers traded a 2 AND Upshall for Carcillo? Really? … And I wonder why that trade still makes me cry.
And as far as an offer sheet you can’t use a draft pick you acquire in a trade; it has to be a native pick in the draft.
Follow up, what if they acquire their original pick back from PHX? Not that it would happen, just curious, does it still qualify as a native pick?
I believe that answer is yes. Strange CBA rule.

I was in college in Boston in 1974 and when Clarke scored the OT goal in game 2 I knew that the Flyers would win the Cup since they would never lose at home.
I am going to side with yes on that one …
When the draft picks aren’t assigned until the end of the season based on team standings. If you look at the draft boards they have the pick is listed as PHX (acquired from PHI).
Also if you look at the Chris Gratton thing. He was signed offer sheet to become a Flyer and the Flyers gave up 4 #1s. The Lightning then traded those 4 #1s back to Philadelphia for Michael Renberg and something … (Dhyhaus?). Those picks the Flyers positioning in the standing so they ended up selecting where they normally would have for the had they just traded for Grattons right like you see people doing today.
I am 95% sure if they traded for their draft pick from PHX they could use it for an offer sheet.
So the Flyers can make an offer to an RFA worth under $~1.6 mil or between ~$3mil and ~$4.7mil.
Ondrej Pavelec is probably not worth $3 mil, but he’s probably available through trade since Atlanta signed Chris Mason.

And curious … is offer sheet compensation based off base salary or salary and bonuses. For instance if you sign a guy to a 2.4 M offer sheet you would have to compensate with a 2. But if you offer 2.4M and a 1M bonus would you compensate against 2.4M or 3.4M since the 3.4M would be a 1 and a 3.
I’m not positive, but I think it’s cap hit.

It’s the average annual value of the salary, signing bonus, and reporting bonus. Performance bonuses aren’t included.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
That’s because nobody who would demand RFA compensation can even have performance bonuses in their contract anyway…. the only players who can get any form of performance bonuses are a) entry level contracts, b) guys who have played over 400 career games and were injured 100+ days the previous season, and c) guys over 35 with 1 year incentive-laden deals. The 22-27 year old RFA’s don’t fit into any of those 3 windows of opportunity.

Doesn’t it have to be their draft pick? For some reason, I thoguht they couldn’t use ones they’ve acquired.
Yes. From the CBA:
Clubs must use their own draft picks (being those awarded directly to the Club by the League for use by it in the Entry Draft, including such draft picks described in the first clause of this parenthetical that a Club has traded or encumbered, and subsequently reacquired or unencumbered.)
Clubs cannot acquire picks to use as compensation (with the exception being a Club’s own draft selections that are traded and then re-acquired).
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Why no Ryan offer sheets
If Bobby wants over $4.6, which he apparently does, that would require a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Given the fact that he is not eligible for arbitration (apologies that I confused this on earlier posts), this means Anaheim is now laughing at him and daring him to sign an offer sheet. Because if someone does, Anaheim will simply say “thanks for the picks”.

I think a lot of people would rather have a guy who is a proven #1 and a guy who is unproven but could be on the cusp of becoming a #1 guy on the same roster than having 2 guys who aren’t #1’s and may or may not develop into a #1.
yeah, I’m not sure Harding and Leighton are all that different, but I’m intrigued by Harding at least.

I’m not a believer in Harding either, at least at the moment over Leighton. But I agree, he is interesting to think about given the defense here. He wouldn’t be a bad idea, I think it would create better competition than Turco/Leights would. I don’t know how a Turco/Leights tandem would work when I think about it, for some reason, I just see them resenting the other. But that’s just a random opinion not based on any thing that even resembles evidence.
No one said wait a week in to free agency to sign a goalie. People simply said wait until July 1st. I don’t see what Nabby leaving for the KHL has anything to do with the people who think Homer should have waited for July 1st before offering Leights the contract.
Sorry, just don’t see the connection you are making there.
Exactly. And there’s still Jose Theodore, Ondrej Pavelec, and Antii Niemi. Not waiting 12 hours before signing Leighton is still an idiotic move.

In the KHL, it's "Hip" to be on the Flyers
Remember what happened the last time we signed a former NHL “head case” who left to play in Russia?
That’s right: Avascular necrosis of the hip.
But Zherdev is Ukranian, much like Ruslan Fedotenko, who won two Stanley Cups.
If we sign Zherdev, we will win back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. Then, Zherdev will retire due to avascular necrosis of the hip.
You heard it here first!
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Wouldn't it be chepaer to...
sign Bo Jackson if we’re looking for a player with a vascular necrosis?
He know a vascular necrosis well!!!
"Call me dumb, call me stupid, whatever. I block shots."
Zherdev is younger and his avascular necrosis has more upside.

Kovalchuk's demands
Are redonk. Reminds me of LeBron. Awesome player, but hasn’t really accomplished all that much to date to warrant that kind of paycheck. Personal stats aren’t everything. There’s something to be said for team play and making players around you better as a result.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
I really like Kovie as a player, I really hope he realizes how much better he can be if he relies on his team mates more. You could see last year in the play offs that he wanted to do everything himself. And he was busting his ass out there. Put his talent, and that effort, together with him grasping the concepts of team and system, and damn he’d be even better.
but if NJ can’t do that, they it’s likely no one can
by historywillbemade on Jul 8, 2010 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Or, maybe he needs to play on a team with more ten one other good player. Think Richie and carter would be good is we didnt have Hart, Danny, Gagne, Giroux, Pronger, Carel, Kimmo, JVR last year? he playes selfish because he HAS to play that way. if he went to LA, he would have better stats because he playes on a better team.
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
No one has to play selfishly. And the NJD were hardly a bad team last year. He wasn’t there long, so I buy that he needs more time to assimilate into the system, but there were plenty of talented players around him. It’s not like he was traded to the Islanders for crap’s sake.
"Tortorella’s got it all wrong ... Gaborik shouldn’t be messing with our skilled player." -Peter Luukko
His demands are crazy. He wants to get paid more than anybody else I guess. Those offers from LA are great. That 13 year for about 84.5 Mil is great. Who other than Ovechkin has a contract bigger than that? (I am sure there are a couple others but my point is that he has a very long term deal he should take).
I think he is going to wait a week until after Lebron James announces his team tonight so he can get some spotlight on him when he decides where he is going to go. I think that he most likely is going to either LA or within our Division.

I think you are assuming the NHL could stand on the same media plane of existence than the NBA. … I mean they are having a show (not a press conference … a show) devoted to who this guy will play for next. I don’t think you will ever have anything like this for any NHL player unless his is the Gretzky of the USA … and even then maybe not.
Yeah, unfortunately that is true. But my point was just if he is wanting any attention he’d wait until next week so that maybe some other people will focus on him, and he may get a nice 20 seconds on SportsCenter about his decision.
I do find it crazy that they are doing an entire one hour prime time show about where LeBron is signing…. an HOUR?? ON ESPN?? That’s about the amount of time they gave any hockey coverage during the entire season.

ESPN is a joke. Its a disney production of sports broadcasting

Yeah I only watch two things on ESPN: SportCenter, and that’s only when somebody else in my family is watching it or my internet is out and I need sports scores. And Baseball Tonight which isn’t too bad, but other than that I agree ESPN is a joke. I won’t watch it at all today and am not all invested in where Lebron goes. I’ll just get home later and just see where he went, and then the world can calm down and the free newspapers here in NYC can stop debating if he’s going to the Knicks or the Nets.

So we trade Gagne get a young/cheap winger in return sign Zherdev and a goalie. Moving Gags fills all holes if done properly. I imagine there would be few complaints just broken hearts, including mine, after all is said and done.
They have to get a LW if they do move Gagne b/c all they are doing is filling a void on the right side, and creating one on the left. I’m on pins and needles waiting to see what happens. And I know everyone says Carter is not going any where, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that came out of no where too given the way this off season has progressed.
Gange is all smoke and mirrors
I see Carter getting moved in favor of an actual winger in Zherdev, and Gange staying.
Now what the actual deal for Carter is? Your guess is as good as mine.
by KornontheKobb on Jul 8, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I was actually thinking the exact same thing. Maybe everytime they were talking about Gags signing in LA they were just speaking code for Carter. Haha, that would be hilarious.
"Chris Pronger sneaked in the back door...banged it home."
Flyers Television Play-by-Play Man: Jim Jackson
I would be happy if that was the case. We can get more for Carter, and if we get a RW in the trade with picks (key is not to take on a lot of salary in the deal) for him that’s cheap or a promising prospect, and sign Zherdev, and if there is enough left Turco (he will probably take an offer as low as the one Homer offered him before July 1st), we can fill all of our holes and I will feel pretty good about our team.
Yes Carter is a great player, but I feel Gagne is too and is a great two way player, brings a lot of heart, and on the cusp of a big season if he doesn’t get injured (knock on tons of wood). And if Gagne didn’t waive his NTC then I see Carter being moved easier. Plus him being an RFA we could get a promising winger plus draft picks. I think that Carter will probably want a significant raise if we resign him (I see him being a cap hit of 6M or more). Gagne will take a discount on his next contract I feel.
Plus we all love Gagne and everything he has done for the team. We’ll just have to see how everything pans out (enough waiting, do it already Homer).

It might be a matter of is RFA status. If I were the Flyers I’d be looking to his next contract now and see where everything stands. If the Flyers feel that next summer it will cost them too much then move him now and get even more for him and free up cap space. If things are heading to a favorable contract for the Flyers then move Gagne.

I wonder if I was really watching the same games sometimes. Mostly all I saw was Hartnell falling over all the time. I don’t know if he was like that last year, but from about game 20 on I saw him continually fall over nothing, or try to hit someone and just bounce off. I swear if we’d give new meaning to TOI if we took the amount of his shifts where he wasn’t on his skates. The excuses I was giving went from: “maybe he has a loose skate” to “maybe he is trying to dive” to “I really hope he has vertigo” … that boys balance is muffed bad.

Any guy is never going to be worth a contract that big, heck you could argue Ovie isn’t worth his. But if you want an electric scorer in this league, it costs big bucks. There are few guys in this league, that when you go to a game, stand out, and I mean stand out during every shift, not just on the stat sheet. Kovie and Ovie are the only two players my gf has ever noticed being “better than everyone” on the ice during a game (better = electrifying here). This might not be a bad signing for NJ b/c they struggle to draw. Kovie, you would hope, would not only continue to produce, but would also help the numbers at the gates in NJ as well. As Brodeur gets closer to leaving, they need someone new to hold the spotlight, and Kovie gives you that, plus he is actually exciting for the casual fan to watch. This may be one of those signings that goes beyond wins and losses on the ice.

The Saga of the Simon Gagne No-Movement-Clause-Waiving
Homer to Gagne: Simon, I don’t really plan on doing this, but considering our cap position and all the guys you know on that team’s management, would you ever consider waiving your NMC to go to the Kings?
Simon: Homer, ees deeficult. But sure, I would consider.
Homer: Thanks. (Goes into meeting with all Flyers office employees).
Homer: Well, I just talked to Gagne. I’m nervous about the cap, but Simon says he might waive his NMC if we needed him to.
(Alternate universe conspiracy theorist version: Homer goes into meeting, calls aside an intern and orders the intern to do the following).
After meeting, intern calls reporter: Yo, Tim, Simon has agreed to waive his NMC.
Reporter tweets: It’s official, Flyers brass say Gagne has waived his NMC.
BSN reaction: Angst, sturm, drang, suicidal thoughts mixed in with capgeek
RDS calls Simon and asks if NMC is waived, Simon says: NON!
Reporter tweets (misinterpreting "non" in French for "non" in English): Gagne never had NMC
Press conference where Carter trade is announced, Homer answers question whether trade rumor about Gagne was ever true: I have no idea how that started, such a thing never started with someone in the Flyers office
(Alternate universe conspiracy theorist version, Homer crosses fingers behind self as he says the previous sentence, and thinks: Of course it didn’t start with anyone here, I fired that intern last week. What, you thought I wasn’t going to maximize the Carter trade?).

Ugh. After all that BSN, should be BSH. Obviously.

an article that may upset us even more: YAY!!!!

That isn’t good.
But one thing I did like was the first related post about Ray Emery being a big risk for us. He was great before he got injured and I really feel if he didn’t get injured and have that bad hip condition which may end his career he may have been our answer in goal. So if that article says that, that means that if we get Zherdev he won’t be a risk (and get injured after having a hot start and end up having a hip problem).

This isn’t anything we don’t already know. And yet, with all that laziness, he also nets 20+ goals per year. He obviously isn’t being brought in for his defense. You don’t need all your forwards to be defensively responsible, especially when talking about wingers. Is it a nice luxury, sure, but it isn’t necessary.
I think Zherdev at less than $3 million/ year as rumored would be a great signing. He couldn’t get away with lazy play on a team with Pronger in the lockerroom. I am just sad that signing Zherdev puts an end to any hope of solving the goaltending issue
by historywillbemade on Jul 8, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Well it depends on what your definition of solving the goaltending situation is. If they still plan on moving salary, there still is that possibility.
well lets do the math and assume Powe and Carcillo are resigned, gagne traded
Zherdev (3 million)
Carcillo (1.5 million) using max # he might get in arbitration
Powe (700k) again using max # he might get (travis i think mentioned this #)
5.2 million cap hit brought in
Powe and Carcillo likely come in at lower hits but for sake of worst case scenario
Gagne (5.25 million)
Cote waived (500k)
Boosh waived (925k)
6.65 million out the door
so that leaves us a total of 1.4 million left give or take (depends on deals in first part) to sign a goalie or get one via the trade. Bernier could fit in that scenario

6.65 Million "out the door"
Can Homer get zero percent financing?
Can he get a rebate (could have used one for Briere and Hartnell)?
Is there a 12 month/12,000 lap visor-to-skate warranty (for players like Zherdev)?

He couldn’t get away with lazy play on a team with Laviolette as his coach.

If I was Zherdev and tanking it, I’d be more worried about Captain Elbows killing me during practice or in the locker room

Emery too. Lavy also helps, he got the laziness out of Richie and Carter
Pilgrim: Be gone pest, and give me the Bird
Yakko: We'd love to but the FOX censors wouldn't allow it
I think Lavy and Pronger will turn him around.
as historywillbemade said above… I’d be more worried about Captain Elbows killing me during practice as well. But I’m sure if he wants to come back to the NHL the situation may be similar to Emery, and if it’s cheap this may be a great singing… we’ll see… just tell us how much it is already (weren’t we supposed to have it announced already today?)

I don’t think anyone should plan on him changing. The guys is going to get you 20+ goals by being a lazy player with a ridiculous amount of skill. Anything more is a bonus. He doesn’t need to change to be valuable to this team (adding a scoring RW), he needs to change to become a steal.
or to survive? if you think rumored lockerroom problems were enough already (though those rumors should be done now) think about what happens after Zherdev’s lazy play cost the flyers a game. Pronger would kill him
by historywillbemade on Jul 9, 2010 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Don’t see that happening. The guy, from what I understand, is a quiet locker room guy that kid of flys under the radar. I’m sure he’ll get shit from Pronger if he f’s up bad, but that might just make him try less.
All I’m saying is, don’t bank on the change, take the knowns. If he does have an improvement, it’s a bonus.
All I’d like him do is start playing some D and not be a liability in one end of the ice while being an asset in the other. I think for as much as people criticize Briere for his lack of work in his own zone, he’s improved with the Flyers and isn’t as noticeable (which is a good thing). If Zherdev can play better D it would be great.
The guy always had potential, but never grasped it (remember, he was taken 4th overall in the strongest draft of all time, 2003). I agree with you that tapping into that potential would be a bonus. We can’t expect that muchout of him.

Why is everyone obsessed with every single forward excelling in their own defensive zone. We have a pretty balanced team of scorers and defensively responsible forwards. We have enough PKers to be able to afford to lose Gagne. Not every forward has to be able to play both ends great. Would it be nice if they did, sure, but it isn’t a requirement. If you balance the line right, it isn’t even that big of a deal. And for a winger, it’s even less of a concern to be responsible defensively. And with being able to hide players with defensive deficiencies with offensive zone starts (when you have last change at the very least), it becomes even less of a key aspect.
I know we all want our players to both be offensive weapons and defensive beasts, but players just don’t come like that, that often. Sure some can improve over time, and maybe he will, I’m just not as concerned about it. I think we have enough defensive responsibility up front now, and combined with our current D line up, the Flyers can afford to go with a more offensive minded player.
unless you are MarioD, who will have nightmares thinking about JVR-Giroux-Zherdev line.
by historywillbemade on Jul 9, 2010 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions
If that’s how they match them up, it’s not terrible, it’s by no means great either. Giroux is very strong defensively. If JVR gets stronger, he’ll be better defensively. Plus if that’s the line, you just have to be smart where/when you play them.
Plus there is something to be said of defense by offensive possession. If that line can control the puck for the majority of their shifts, they don’t have to worry their own zone as much. That line has the talent to do so.
oh it would be great line no doubt about it but jvr and zherdev playing defense would be scarier, at least the center is giroux. if carter was the center of that line, we’d all be scared about terrible defense but i dont see that line happening. jvr-giroux-zherdev makes a lot of sense
by historywillbemade on Jul 9, 2010 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah we’ll see what happens. I guess I’m just not as concerned with having the same defensively responsible lineup of forwards as I have been in the past. The D should be good enough to cover up some holes, and they have enough defensive forwards they can swap around if they really need to match up in tight spots.
oh i agree. as long as that line isn’t matched up against top lines, which they likely wouldn’t be as 3rd line, then it would work
