What are your thoughts on this trade possibility?
Like many fans here, I'd love to see Bobby Ryan in Orange and Black. We have all heard how contract negotiations between him and Anaheim are going (or would "not going" be the better term?). We also know that we have 8 NHL ready defensemen on our roster, while they only have 5 since they traded Wisnewski for practically nothing. Let's be honest here, though. Are Festerling and Mikkelson REALLY NHL ready? Most posts by Ducks fans I've read clearly state "NO". The Ducks are currently $15M under the cap, with 21 players signed, including the Dmen listed above. $15M for 2 true NHL Dmen and possibly a reserve goalie (their current back-up is McElhinney. Who? Exactly) and reserve F.
With that said, do you think it's possible, or even logical, to trade Carle/Coburn and van Riemsdyk for Bobby Ryan? We have $300K in cap space available right now (read - NO wiggle room). I'll go with Coby's salary for the D, for the sake of lower cap hit. Ryan made $1.9M last year, which is an absolute BARGAIN for a 30-goal scorer. We offer $10.5M for 3 years ($3.5M per), and have the deal agreed to prior to the trade. We lose Coby's salary ($3.2M) + JvR's ($1.6M including bonuses), leaving an extra $1.3M in cap space for a total availability of $1.6M with a full roster already set.
I'm basing this scenario WITHOUT speculation of waiving Cote (although it's immenent) or Boosh, nor looking into another goalie. Of course, this trade/signing would make it much easier to waive them both ($1.475M) and sign Turco/Theo/insert other goalie possiblities here; plus leave plenty of space for any needed aquisitions at the deadline.

Na.
Defense is our greatest strength. I don’t want to see any of the top 4 moved. While Ryan would be awesome, we don’t need another big salary up front.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
Agree
I would say trading maybe Meszaros or Bartulis, but getting a good forward prospect in return. We are set up front, and would only consider a trade for a goalie at this point. Forwards are good, defense is amazing. Coburn and Carle will be here for awhile. Only d-man with value i would wanna trade is Bartulis for a good forward prospect in return.
Ryan would not take 3.5 for 3. Neither is he at his current status (an unsigned RFA holding out against his team heading into August) worth a 25 year old top 4 defender and a former no. 2 draft pick.

Also, to clarify my position, I am completely against trading JVR as a sweetener in any type of deal. Just because he didn’t score 60 points in his rookie year (which would be 2 away from the team lead, that’s how bad our regular season was) doesn’t take away from his potential.

interesting
i assume hartnell or briere are the next forwards to go, and that JVR is almost near Giroux-level untouchability. but ya gotta give to get, eh?
Briere’s contract is unmoveable, so he’s here until he decides to retire. I agree about Hartnell, though.
I wish there were a realistic scenario where we could get someone like Ryan, but we’re not in such a position right now.

pipe dream
You got to be kidding yourself if you think there is any possibility that A) this trade could even possibly happen and B) that Ryan would take that contract.

That contract would be unrealistic given everything I've read/heard
All I’ve read/heard is that he was offered 5 years, 5 per, but wants 3 years, 5 per. So I can’t see Ryan ever signing a contract like that, unless he is really set on the 3 years (but I can’t imagine the Ducks not being able to offer that deal even though all their FA’s would be up in the same year, so I believe he is pretty set on the 5mil number). In theory it is possible I guess if Ryan is so dead set on 3 years, and the Ducks want to avoid all their young talented FA’s coming up the same year. But I think Ryan wants his $5mil per for 3 years anyway b/c he feels he’ll out perform the $5mil in years 4 and 5 of the contract. But I don’t understand Ryan’s desire of the 3 year contract, b/c after 3 years he’d still be an RFA, after 4 or 5 he’d be a UFA, but hey, I’m not him nor his agent.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Maybe ryan thinks that after he finishes a 3 year deal he could find someone willing to sign him to a big offer sheet. It seems like an easy compromise for them to agree to a 4 year deal.

Yeah, I’m surprised they haven’t settled on the 4 year compromise. Though I’d imaging the Ducks would hope to have 2 full seasons of Getzlaf and Perry under their new contracts with Ryan still at $5mil per, assuming they will have rebuilt their D by then internally or through FA. So I can see why the Ducks would hold out, but at this point I can’t imagine the two sides not meeting at the 4 year $4-4.5 per range.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Id expect the salary to go btw $5-5.5 seeing as ryan is conceding an extra year wouldn’t the team concede a little extra cash ?

Well it depends who blinks first. But the Ducks will want him at a little less since they are getting one less year of him, so his average value to the team might be around $4.5 over the average of 4 years versus $5mil average for 5 years. The ducks are compromising on length, but so is Ryan I guess (by one year) they may end up at 4 years $20mil and just compromise of the years with the $ amount the same. At $5mil per you project Ryan to under perform to that value the 1st 2 years, out perform it the last 2, and perform to it at year 3, so from a Ducks perspective, if you are giving up a year of over performing, you’d want to lesson the cap space. I’m sure Ryan’s camp would side with you however. Just a matter of perspective I guess, but it’s a different thought process from the uber long Kovie type deals obviously.
Is this the right room for an argument?
