Scratch Marty Turco's name off Flyers' list
From a story by Tim Panaccio this morning:
All along, various NHL sources have said that Marty Turco would have liked to have become a Flyer this summer.
Ain’t happening.
In late June, Turco, a free agent, told ESPN.com that he had turned down a three-year, $6 million contract offer from the Flyers, who denied the offer though they were given permission by the Dallas Stars to contact him in advance of free agency.
We would have loved to go to the Flyers, but it’s not happening," Turco texted CSNPhilly.com late Saturday from Scotland.
The Flyers options in net are forever dwindling. Hope you're not a Leighton-hater (a Leighater?).

Didn't want him anyway.
Let’s see how Leighton does, if he doesn’t perform, make a deal at the deadline if things are really going that bad. I, for one, look forward to see how Leighton performs knowing he is the guy.

Agreed! Turco is no prize. He isn’t a difference maker. If the flyers do anything to get a goaltender it better be an upgrade or an up and comer. No more has beens on this team.

I also find it interesting...
that hockeybuzz.com reports “Turco is ready to be signed for 1.5”…it would seem odd he turned down 2 million from the Flyers which leads me to believe Turco was blowing smoke up peoples asses.

Well, at the time Turco turned down 2 million dollars:
- The value for free-agent goalies had not yet been established and Turco expected more.
- The Flyers had not yet blown their cap-space wad on Meszaros, O’Donnell, Zherdev, Shelley, and Walker.
Now:
- Turco realizes that 1.5 million is the most he’s going to get from anyone; and
- The Flyers already spent that money on Michael Leighton and Johan “I Hope To God He Makes the Team” Backlund.
So it wasn’t necessarily Turco blowing smoke; it was what he wanted for himself versus what guys like him were getting paid. C’est la vie dans la LNH.

Just like Biron sitting by the phone after he turned down our offer and I believe he eventually signed with the Isles for less. Bummer.
Maybe this means that next time we want to sign a FA goalie they’ll look back on Biron and Turco, see what happened to them and take our offer.

Besides, what’s with the spooky monsters on his mask? What is he, 13 years old?

not to be a thorn
but Lidge was very good for some time in Houston. Then he was average for a couple years, then he had the amazing year with us, and now hes awful.

Yeah. I’m mostly focusing on the “he was average for a couple years, then he had the amazing year with us, and now…” aspect.

He was good until “the home run” …
After that his psyche was shot and couldn’t perform. He comes to Philly clean slate and he is awesome until he gets hurt and then he derailed. It isn’t that he doesn’t have the stuff so it can only be surmised that it is all in his head which is probably why Manuel keeps going back to him, to try and mine that vein of confidence in his head and hopes he can snap out of it. I’m sure the Philadelphia media isn’t helping …
Does he still have the stuff? I’ve seen a ton of hanging sliders, missed fastballs, and just generally bad pitching out of him.

His fastball is declining in speed every year, and he tries to overthrow it which messes up his command and location (and makes it incredibly straight). His slider is still nasty, but if he cannot locate the fastball, hitters lay off the slider and wait for the meatball or take the walk. A walk with Lidge is as good as a double because he can’t hold runners on (most strikeout pitchers can’t—look at Wagner). He needs to platoon with Romero and be used in the 8th. He is absolute shite against LH’ers and Romero is your premier LOOGY.
Madson still has the best stuff on the team and should be the closer. Before anyone says “We tried that already, he can’t close,” he’s only had a handful of opportunities so the sample size is too small to determine. However, Lidge has had over 80 innings to prove he can no longer close with any sort of consistency. This “closer’s mentality” stuff is BS. It’s 3 outs. Same as any other inning. Yes, you might get some PH’ers, but once Maddog settles into the role, I think he would do fine. Better than Lidge anyway.
That’s my $1.50 take on the situation.
Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.
I wouldn’t have minded Turco but i wouldn’t have called it a fix to our never ending goalie carousel. Leighton took us further than anyone else not named Hextall in my life-time I am willing to give him a full year as the man.
If this fails we can also get Nabokov cheap next year when he wants back into the NHL.
True that. Plus, with a stronger D in front of him we should be able to go at least as far, if not all the way. I just hope we’re able to actually score some goals this year on the nights Boosh plays. Too many games last year got p!ssed away by losing 1-0 or 2-1 against mediocre teams when he was in net.
I thought for most of the season offense was our biggest problem and letting Knuble go was a big loss we broke apart both our top lines from the year before.. We couldn’t score at even strength and guys like Asham and Carcillo and Powe playing on top lines was killing us. Leino is a big improvement if he can continue his playoff magic same with moving Danny to center. I am still holding out hope for an upgrade on wing so where but that is looking more and more unlikely.
The switching Gagne for Zherdev might also help being that Gagne tends to miss too many games. We all not the unfortunate part was that we could have approached this offseason with a little more patience and both Gagne and Zherdev
I love that its only 1M less than the price of Nabby

I am a Leighton hater, and this makes me a sad panda. But at least the defense is top notch, so hopefully that makes Leighton’s obvious negatives less obvious

I’m happy Turco’s not coming. He is not an upgrade over Leighton. The Turco of 3-or-more-years-ago would have been, but he’s not the same quality goaltender now.
What memphisbrando said above is true – if Chicago decides to re-sign Niemi, Turco, despite his agent’s claims, will most likely be a back-up, probably in Nashville. Should be an interesting situation to watch…

I completely agree, but so few people around here seem to want to hear it. An upgrade in goal would have been nice, but the players I see available right now would be a lateral move at best, so we might as well sit tight with Leighton.

In case you missed it … it is offical:
Blackhawks walk away from Niemi, sign Turco
Ladies and gentlemen, start the rumor mill!
So, who wants to see a starting duo of Niemi and Leighton?
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
Start a poll. :)

It can be done ...
I posted Capgeek numbers elsewhere, with a (basically) intact Flyers lineup – minus Boucher, Cote, and Walker – and adding Niemi, and there’s still $1 million in cap space there. I don’t see why that wouldn’t be a great idea.

I would agree, Boucher would be the odd man out in any goal change scenario, even if it were to bring up Backlund. Cote has been sucking up salary for more than a season for no discernible return, and I’m sorry Walker just flat-out was an un-needed body and Cap Hit. I would be perfectly content, and might be prone to cut Homer some slack on his previous bone-headed maneuvers if he orchestrated a move in which the Flyers start the season with a tandem of Niemi and Leighton…
Cheers,
