Very well done, sir.
Are these too easy, or is everybody awesome?

He’s the trivia champ, pretty sure he’s just awesome. That is the hardest one yet I think, no clues, no numbers and the jersey doesn’t really help place time period.

Mikael Renberg in the background didn’t help either?

Yeah, I was a pretty big fan of his too.

Somehow I doubt the Leafs fans will stop wanting to trade Kaberle though… I don’t think they’ll drop it even if it’s over for now.
(Off topic, but prompted by the Flyer of the Day pictures – I have a Flyers related conundrum, and I wanted to know if you guys would be willing to help…. We found a bag of signed pucks from about 15 years ago. While we can ID most of the signatures, there are some we can’t figure out. If I made a Fanpost, would you guys be willing to take a crack at some of the harder ones? Feel free to say no, you aren’t obligated, but you all seemed like the best people to ask. Or Geoff could post them instead of the photographs as his Morning Fly By challenge, except in this case I wouldn’t know what the right answer is to tell you if you’re right or not. )

I’d totally help, not sure how much help I’d be but I’ll help…..help. Interesting sentence from me there. Sorry.
off-off-topic, did you take any pics from the last pick-up “game”?

I couldn’t… at the the only angles that I could get the camera to focus around the fence, I couldn’t zoom in enough to take a real picture. I had to stand too far away to get an angle where I could focus at all.

That’s pretty much what I thought. Stupid fence.

Feel free to email me them if you want, I’m looking for two more pictures for this week’s Fly By challenge (I like the name, by the way).
They can be the ones you do know, or the one’s you don’t, but I’d imagine a fanpost is better for the ones you don’t know. Not like it matters though.

I miss those red-orange jerseys going black was such a bad move. Fuck the black. Thank god it is done this year full time. Hopefully.
I prefer black to white. The Flyers are called the orange and black so I prefer both jerseys to prominently feature each color. Then again I’m not a fan of any generic white jersey. White is a weak plain jersey choice. Nothing about white exites me. I don’t think teams should wear white unless its one of the teams primary colors(like the leafs) or its absolutely necessary. That said the sleeves on the latest black jerseys look horrible.

Zherdev still hasn’t announced his number yet. I am hoping for 31 somebody needs to wear it or flat out retire Pelle’s number. I think that might be our jinx.
Thanks Teemu. You just forced me into getting another jersey! Anytime a player for my favorite teams wears number 9 I have to get it.

Joacim Eriksson is the Flyers top ranked prospect on Hockey’s Future, 7.5C. I had no idea!
For comparison, the incomparable Garret Klotz is a 5.0C.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
Jeeze, having no idea what that rating system means that’s disheartening.
by tmurder on Aug 16, 2010 6:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Here is the breakdown.
Eriksson’s ranking of 7.5C means,
7 – Second line forward / No. 3-4 defenseman / journeyman No. 1 goaltender — players not quite good enough to play on the top line or pairing on a regular basis, but still possessing enough talent to contribute offensively, defend with some authority, or competently play the goaltender’s position for long stretches. Think Andrew Cassels, Jason Arnott, Darryl Sydor, Keith Carney, Dwayne Roloson, Jeff Hackett.
C – May reach potential, could drop 2 ratings – has shown some flashes, but may ultimately not have what it takes to reach his potential. The potential rating is multiplied by 80 percent for depth chart purposes to show the uncertainty of a player reaching his potential.
For the whole list of prospects go here. It’s all pretty interesting.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
They also tend to be down on prospects – wasn’t Crosby something like an 8.5B?
Honor is no substitute for victory.
But you need to remember that a 10 is a “generational talent” and an A is “100 percent metaphysical certitude” the guy will reach potential.
So if Crosby was an 8.5B, that means he was between a “first-line forward” and an “elite forward” who is “likely to reach” that potential. Is he a 10A? Yeah, at this point, but Lindros and Daigle were considered 10As by a lot of people, so surely they were being careful.
The top prospect according to them right now is Alex Pietrangelo, a #4 overall defenseman for St. Louis who is an 8.5C. Just for reference sake. I wouldn’t say it’s “down” on prospects, more like “cautious”

True. I should have phrased that as “more pessimistic” – they seem to rate somewhere between the guy’s floor and his “average” expected position, where most people would look for his ceiling.
And the funny thing is, they have Pietrangelo at #1 with an 8.5C, but Varlamov is #2 with an 8.5B.
7.5C is the same rating as Jonathan Quick and Michal Neuvirth. Bernier is an 8.0C, to give a goalie comparison for Eriksson.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Very good points. I personally don’t put too much into the rankings across players, but rather of that player in particular.

Yeah, I just have to keep reminding myself that 8 and 7 are good numbers in their system, and 6.5 is OK. It’s when you get down to 6.0 or lower that they’re marginal guys. Likewise, B is good, C is OK, D worries me. I’d rather have a 6.5C than a 7.0D, all other things being the same. I mentally split our prospects from their list into three groups:
Probably OK (>6.0, >D):
Wellwood
Maroon
Nodl
Marshall
Bourdon
Lehtivuori
Bertilsson
Eriksson
Morrison
High risk (>6.0, <C):
Labrecque
Pither
Popov
Legein
Harper
Bodrov
Riopel
Low Ceiling (<6.5)
Rinaldo
Klotz
Kalinski
Lauridsen
Hostetter
Kovar
Phillips
The “Probably OK” group should contribute at some level in the NHL. The “High Risk” may contribute or may be a total bust. The “Low Potential” guys will probably bounce between the AHL and NHL, with permanent third line/third pairing/back-up goalie being an “exceeds expectations” result for them.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
I think you hit that perfectly. I’m pretty excited for Pither, Labrecque, Harper, Legein, and Riopel this year. Not because they’re going to break out, but because this year is crucial for each and every one of them.
This is probably Legein’s make-or-break year. Labrecque needs a solid year in the Q, in which case he might move up into the top tier. Pither needs a solid year in the AHL to set up a make-or-break year next year. Same with Harper. Riopel needs to first get a contract, but he needs to make his excellent preparation, attitude, and willingness to learn become results.
Needless to say, I love underdogs, the less popular players, and the fringe guys like Bruno St. Jacques. Just something about their story, their desire, and their low expectations makes me want to watch.
But yeah, really round about way of saying I think your 3-tier system is perfectly accurate.
