Close. The first player is Pat Falloon.

You’re right. Thought it was a 19 but it’s a 15. I gotta start waking up before I do these.

Given the fact that Falloon is out there with Brind’Amour, LeClair, Desjardns, and Dykhuis, I’m going to guess that picture was taken during the first quarter of the 1996-97 season, when both Mikael Renberg and Eric Lindros were out of the lineup.

CSN Philly Article is a good read, Timmy P back from Vacation with a good piece. Got me fired up for camp.
Lines up in the Skate Zone office to start camp according to Pnatoch
JVR-Carter-Zherdev
Carcillo-Richards-Grioux
Hartnell-Briere-Leino
in that order
Good idea or bad idea trying to sign Carts and Giroux before the season the starts ??

Giroux: Good idea. Lock him up for good value now.
Carter: Bad idea. We may need him for trade bait later. Signing him to a long-term deal may dissuade potential buyers.

not that I agree with this statement, but I think we are more likely to trade Giroux then Carter, especially if Giroux doesnt have a good regular season.

And if that happens you can continue doing what your sig says you’ve been doing since 7-19-10.

I agree with you both with the contracts. I really think we need to lock up Giroux long term (10+ year deal) so we get a good cap hit and keep him for a long time.
Carter I don’t want to re-sign until next off-season, if at all. I don’t know how we are going to afford everybody next off-season. I see G as our future and I DO NOT want to see him in another team’s uniform so we need to keep him. I really want to see how everybody pans out this season to see who is worth keeping around, and we don’t have to worry so much about Carter since he is a RFA, so nobody will really take him away from us (and if they do we’ll get a ton of great picks for Homer to trade).

Right I know that, I just want him locked up ASAP because we can get him for cheaper now as opposed to the end of the season when he could have a breakout year and have a higher value.
Plus I bet he is a sure thing just with all of his skills and I don’t want Homer to wait too long and he may be snatched away as a RFA.

If Bobby Ryan isn’t getting snatched away with offers or Marc Staal I don’t see Giroux or Carter getting offer sheets.
True for Carter, I don’t see anybody really taking him unless the FA market for scorers is very thin. I don’t know about Giroux. I mean he has a pretty low salary this year so he probably won’t get signed in the range of Carter, and may be nabbed with an offer sheet if we have a bad cap situation and Homer chooses to re-sign Carter before Giroux, and a team makes an offer we can’t match. Then I can see something bad happening, which is why when I read a headline saying Giroux is extended I’ll breathe a bit easier.

Right. Anaheim will match most offer sheets for Bobby Ryan. The Flyers will have zero cap space, even after having let go of Leino and Zherdev, and won’t be able to match the offer.
Or we could just trade Carter and keep Leino, Zherdev and Giroux (i.e. our future).

That’s what I wanted to happen this offseason. Trade Carter instead of Gagne and we’d probably be able to keep everybody we wanted (but I won’t be a long dead horse).
I either say what Homer should do is lock up Giroux long term before the season starts or somewhere in the beginning like October or November(he should have a lower value than say after this season when he could break out and score 80 points). Trade Carter either at the deadline or after the playoffs if we can get a really good return for him. If we can’t get a good trade I think some team may sign him to an offer sheet especially if we can’t match it (and get a lot of draft picks), but not a lot of people give players offer sheets to RFA’s lately (off topic thought, if I were LA and Kovalchuk ends up in NJ I’d sign Ryan to an offer sheet, get a scoring winger and take him from a rival).
But you’re right, I say if we can keep Leino, Zherdev and Giroux instead of Carter go for it. Plus if we time it right we can get good value (i.e. if we can tell that Leino and Zherdev will play as we expect them before the end of the season). I think Giroux is a very sure thing that’s why I want him locked up NOW!

Those are interesting lines. Obviously, the Briere line is looking good (or were a few months ago), and that Richards line looks somewhat interesting even if I wish G had someone other than Carbomb to be a finisher. But the Carter line … although I think seeing G at wing and Carts at center makes sense, unless Zherdev really did learn two-way play in Russia that line needs Carter to return to being a good complete center. Given that it is a contract year for him, and that he’s drifted away from that responsible play to being a sniper-style player, I don’t see it unless Lavvy really reads him the riot act. JVR is still maturing … seems risky. But hey – that’s what training camp is for, right?
And signing G ASAP should be a top priority for Holmgren. The kid just keeps getting better – and I do think his skills will rapidly surpass the rest of the team this season. Get him now, pay him on somewhat-unrealized potential, and save the hassle and extra cash from signing him at the end of the season. Carter I think would be great to keep, but the new contract would definitely be a hindrance if they want to keep any options for the trade deadline. And really, can they afford to keep him? With Zherdev, Leino, and Boucher all becoming UFAs (assuming they want to resign Leino, maybe keep Zherdev, and move Backlund up) and Giroux, Carcillo, Powe, AND Carter as RFAs … there’s only so many dollars in the salary cap. The only caveat is that Carcillo and Powe could play out the RFA contract year with the mandatory raise, O’Donnell could come off the books as a UFA as would Boucher, and that would leave a little extra room. But still not enough in my mind.
Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.
I also don’t see how trading a guy at the deadline who is going to be a RFA is less valuable then a guy that is signed assuming the contract is reasonable is actually more valuable than an up and coming RFA.
Reasonable contract? With Homer setting it up? Dont see this happening.
I love the Lightning AND the Flyers... go ahead, preach me!
Dare to follow my childish, biased, petty and cheesy alter ego.
American Cheese, B!tch! ... #1 mission? Kill Holmgren.
Richards is reasonable, Carter is reasonable now, Pronger is very reasonable, Carcillo, Powe there aren’t that many over paid players on this team people especially the higher contracts the lower contracts tend to be his worse signings.
Nobody is over paid except Mez and coburn (and Mez wasnt homers signing)
saying "F**k Homer" since 7-19-10
I feel like it’s redundant to mention Jody Shelley, as if the absurdity of that contact is some kind of knowledge that is inherent in all humans, or transmitted—unspoken—by the very air.
Its funny that he is the only current Flyer so far to make the Mt Puckmore list.
Look at what Ott is pulling in down in Dallas. 2.9M and Boogaard over at the Rangers.
That defines overpayment, not Shelleys contract.

On the lines:
Hartnell-Briere-Leino staying together is good
I’m a bit worried about the others. Carter still at center, OK I can’t say that completely surprised me. Playing with JVR, I think we’re gonna see a lot of missed shots. Playing JVR and Zherdev together also rings warning bells on the defensive aspect of that line (and when we’ve got Briere centering another line…). I’m a bit unsure about how that line pans out. One thing is for sure is that if Carter becomes 08-09 Carter and JVR continues his development and Zherdev gets his head right then that line has the potential to be explosive. We can dub it the ‘unlocked potential line’.
I feel Giroux is being wasted, a) at wing, b) with Carcillo on his line, c) on the line that will be matched against other top lines and expected to play good defensive hockey against them. I’d rather him be allowed to score, be creative and set up plays with players good enough to receive his passes and know what to do with them.
Those lines could work. I’m just a bit uneasy as of now.
On the contracts?
- sign Giroux now. As of now we know he’s got potential but he hasn’t broken out into superstar level…yet. Say he goes off and scores 80 points this season, then we would have to pay him a lot more. I’d rather we give him 3 years or so at fairly cheap. What are the rules for ensuring he’s an RFA at the end of his next contract? Whatever they are I think that would be the best option. Locking him up for 10 years would be awesome but I don’t see that happening now.
- sign Carter later. Much later. Really, if we sign Carter now we are looking at saying goodbye to Zherdev and Leino already, and as Geoff pointed out in his SBNPhilly article, Carter is really still an unknown quantity. Let’s see what we’ve got in him before giving him superstar money and telling a kid like Leino who could be a superstar that his services will not be required after this season.

Settling Ties:
The NHL should just go to the same system that soccer uses and be done with it.
Make all the games worth 3 points.
3 for a regulation win, 2 for an OT win, 1 for an OT loss, 0 for a regulation loss.
Kill the shootout. Replace it with 5 minutes of 3-on-3. Someone should be able to score 3-on-3.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I agree on both points. All the games should be worth the same amount of points. It simply makes the most sense.
I’d also rather see a 3-on-3 OT than a shootout.
Yes. And if no one can score 3-on-3, both teams get one point. Yes, I’m advocating ties. But if we need to have the best chance of having winners and losers, have the winners get their points by actually playing organized hockey and not having penalty shots.
Pe_NAL-ty Shawt. (8-bit cheering)

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
I find 3 on 3 more cartoonish. Remember FAT GUY, MEDIUM GUY, SKINNY GUY, nintendo ICE HOCKEY.

And for those American’s who can’t do Math no Ties and some game being worth 3 points and others worth two does inflate the point totals to begin with.
Except Nintendo Ice Hockey was 4 vs 4 plus a goalie….just saying.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I always went three skinny’s and a fat. Anyone else?

As a Flyers fan I followed the Flyers mold 3 FATS 1 MEDIUM slow but mean and I also won all the brawls getting lots of PP time oh and I never played as the Soviets.
Second goal line (aka Yellow Line)
I like this idea a ton. Especially since the boys got shafted at least a handful of times last season from pucks that supposedly didn’t cross the goal line.
Seems like this option is a no brainer. Did the puck touch the yellow line? Yes? GOOOAAAAL!
It doesn’t solve most of the problem. You’re still relying on the same camera angles, and the same equipment and people are still getting in the way. It’ll only work for puck flat on the ground that are partially covered (scratch that: it SHOULD only work it these scenarios). Leading to my favorite potential prop bet for the year: over/under 6.5 goals as a result of a yellow line?
Yeah I agree with you, this doesn’t seem to solve any of the real problems.
Is this the right room for an argument?
There has to be a way to place a camera in the net that can be much more definitive with a special wide angle lens or something. Some games have the in the net cam they can improve upon that position it better to see the goalline instead of using it for glamour shots and require it at every arena.
I agree completely. The only problem is you can’t have something coming down from the crossbar b/c it will obstruct part of the net and be too vulnerable to damage. Maybe they could throw it inside the cross bar, wide angle shooting down??? Definitely not my area of expertise, but something needs to be thought up. They have smarter people than us working on these things hopefully.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Not a bad idea. With all of the technology these days they should be able to make a small camera that can go in or directly behind the crossbar and not obstruct anything looking straight down on the goal line. Only problem I forsee with that is the goalie going back into the net to make a save and blocking the entire camera. So here is my idea:
Have 3 cameras along the cross bar, one on top, and the other two on each side so you have three different angles along the goal line and should be able to see the puck from one of those cameras and whether it crossed the goal line. Also like chrislanci said make them wide angle so that it will see everything.
Also another idea that occured to me, maybe don’t allow goalies to wear black gloves so the puck can be more easily seen by replays and see if it crosses the line.

Google can read the headline of the my newspaper sitting on my perch from a satellite in outer-space and broadcast on the net so anyone can see it. I know there is technology that can do it but the NHL better out source this problem to get it right because I know they don’t have someone smarter working on this. A second goal line is all they could come up with, NHL = Full Retard.
Yeah true. I see the diagram of the second goal line, which I think may perhaps help for a few goals (maybe), I am not sure how it is supposed to work in action. If the puck touches the line it’s in?
And I saw the diagram there is a 3" space between both lines, which is the width of the puck. Works if the puck is flat, but if it’s on it’s side??? It will cross the goal line but not touch the yellow line and it will leave us with what we currently have. I feel it could help with some but will still leave a lot of goals up in the air.

I am not sure how it is supposed to work in action. If the puck touches the line it’s in?
Yes … it isn’t a 100% thing. But if the puck is touching at line there is no chance it is not over the actual goal line … it is just an aid to help
RIght that makes sense. I guess my point is that it would be a little help but it’s not a really good solution to fix the problem, just a little bit of an improvement that I see maybe aiding in deciding 1 out of 5 of the calls to Toronto.
