The nhl’s best jersey list there loses all credibility when they have put that awful Stars jersey at #4. I mean, isnt that the same jersey that most people said was the worst jersey when reebok made the new ones? Yuk, the other 4 are sweet though, replace the stars one with either one of Edmonton’s jerseys or Pitts blue jersey IMO.

Well, it is a Stars blog. And he does say they’re homers.
I like the Stars jerseys, but not enough to put them in the top 5. I’d keep the top 3 the same, then throw Minnesota’s Home at #4 and Buffalo’s 3rd (soon to be home?) at #5.

Should we just be listing our top five? Chicago whites, Calgary alts, Montreal reds, Rangers whites, Vancouver hockey stick blues.
Excluding Original Six, like that list did.

The Flyers would have totally won the cup this year ...
… if we had Cyber Lindros.
Oh well, looks at least like I found a new fantasy hockey team name.
I love the Flyers so much I even went to Bobby Clarke Day Camp.
I dont know…even if he was a cyborg, bet he would have still been plagued with a faulty “Mother” board…LOL!

For the past few years, I always dreamed that Hatcher and Rathje would come back as cyborgs and help with the playoff push. Why else were they still on they payroll?

LOVE the DGB piece, too funny…
LOVE the FLYERS making the top 5 on the Jersey list, perplexed by the Stars inclusion, terrible jersey, but as previously mentioned…they (like us here, though perhaps to a lesser extent) are homers…

Any future threats of a work stoppage are likely to be extremely unpopular with hockey fans, many of whom would take it as a devastating betrayal on the part of a sport they’ve cared for deeply since childhood. How convincingly would you be able to fake caring about that?
Gotta love it when DGB starts my day off with a good laugh.
Geoff, I find it interesting that in your article about Riopel you didn’t mention that he would have needed to sign a new contract mid-season in order to ever be called up, and the same applies for this year. If Riopel and Bobrovsky are splitting time in the AHL, it’s more likely for Bob to get the call since his contract already allows him to play in the NHL. I’m wondering the Flyers’ front office has some reason for only signing Riopel to one-way AHL-only deals both years, whether it’s a lack of confidence or a particular concern, or if it’s just their usual management errors. It’s almost like they don’t expect to give him a chance with the big club this year at all.
(For those who might care, you can ink an AHL player to an NHL two-way deal at any point during the season and start the waiver call up process at exactly the same moment you submit the contract to the NHL, so it doesn’t cause a lot of lag time if he were to be upgraded to an NHL deal in a hypothetical time of need.)

Wow, I didn’t even think of that. Great call.
I assumed he was signed to an AHL deal last year so they had the option of stashing him in the Q, but I was just assuming this year he had an NHL deal – and CapGeek just hadn’t put it up yet.
Now I’m pissed. Awesome.

There’s no reason to use an AHL deal specifically for that purpose, because you can stash a player on an NHL two-way deal in the Q the first year, and then the slide rule will be enacted and the contract will just get extended. See exhibit A: Claude Giroux, and exhibit B: Oskars Bartulis. In fact, the slide rule can be enacted twice (as in a two year slide) if the player is young enough to spend 2 more years in the Q.
The real reason teams should use AHL deals is because each team can only have 50 total players on NHL contracts, and so anyone they don’t expect to call up won’t waste a slot on the 50 man list. (Mind you, if a contract slides, they don’t count it against the 50 man list for the year the slide takes place, but for subsequent non-slide years spent in the AHL it counts.) So the real question is, why is it that the Flyers don’t think Riopel is deserving of a spot on the contract reserve list? Are they that convinced that he’s not a sure thing?

Good point about the two-way deals.
So the real question is, why is it that the Flyers don’t think Riopel is deserving of a spot on the contract reserve list? Are they that convinced that he’s not a sure thing?
I think your first question is fantastic. Your second question probably isn’t what you meant – he’s not at all a sure thing. I’m convinced of that. But that doesn’t mean he is unworthy of being on the reserve list.
If only we could get an honest answer to your first question… Instead, I’ll just assume the Flyers don’t like Riopel.

Yeah, I definitely didn’t word the second part right, because nobody’s really a sure thing… But Stewart has a 1 year two-way NHL deal, I don’t understand how Riopel doesn’t have the same. There are four open spots on the 50 man list, with nobody outstanding that we expect to re-sign.
by DragonGirl0583 on Aug 31, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn’t say it, but I really don’t understand the Stewart signing. Sure, go ahead, why not. But you sign him before Riopel? To an NHL deal?
I really want to go watch training camp now to see Riopel. I got a hint of him being an emotional goalie – which I attributed to him being a perfectionist – but maybe it’s nerves, knowing the organization doesn’t think highly of him.

Cup visits a NJ Hospital
Hard as it may be to admit that someone from the Black Hawks did something classy, this is a really nice story… One of their assistant coaches brought it to the pediatric unit of a Monmouth county hospital in NJ yesterday: http://www.courierpostonline.com/article/20100831/NEWS02/100831054/Stanley-Cup-at-N-J-hospital
“All three of my kids were born here,” Haviland said, "and so I wanted to do what I can to give back. It’s amazing to see the reaction, the way people’s faces light up.
As Haviland walked through the pediatric unit, everyone stopped as the cup went past — young patients in pajamas and their parents, nurses, doctors and staff all clamored to mug with the trophy. Haviland obliged every request.

… now the lack of cable television is starting to set in … Is there any online service that you can sign up for to get the Flyers game on PC? Will pay for it no problem, I just don’t want to pay $100 a month for 9 months just to watch hockey games.
Do you live outside the Philadelphia DMA? Cause if you do, you can sign up for GameCenter Live when the season starts. I had it for I think the last half of the season and it was $25/month.

Ack. Then your best bet probably is atdhe.net, because you’ll be blacked out from Flyers games on GameCenter Live.

Try
www.atdhe.net
especially when you want to check out Euro games too. Just be warned, you get what you pay for and occasionally there may be a channel with spyware or viruses.
The Sweater link on the Dallas site was cool. Kudos for them.
My top 5 non Orig 6 jerseys (and to be diff I’ll leave out Flyers too):
5 – Minny – Alt 3rd Green Jersey – very retro,looks good
4 – Phx – Home Red, I’m loathe to give this franchise props for anything, but the Red with howling dog is nice
3 – VAN 3rd jersey – great color scheme and like the simplicity of the stick logo.
2 – BUF new /old retro logo home – the crossed sabres and buffalo was always cool
1 – STL Blues logo 3rd alt jersey, the Big D guys got it right.
This was actually pretty hard w/o the Orig Sux and Philly. There are some pretty bad sweaters out there…
FLUGTAG!
I know it’s early in the week and I’ll probably bring it up again Friday but the FLUGTAG is going to be blast on Saturday. Everytime I read FLUGTAG I yell it in my head, it’s that awesome.
Awww
I’m so happy someone finally picked a Lightning jersey in such thing as “The 5 Best looking jerseys”. I never thought that would be possible. And I’m glad they chose the road whites. I have a thing for road jerseys… I don’t know why…
I love the Lightning AND the Flyers... go ahead, preach me!
