Sarah’s article lost me here:
while the offense will be bolstered by the support of Nikolai Zherdev and Jody Shelley
Those three things in bold just don’t seem to belong together.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Lost?
Any of you kids who want my take on WHY Shelley provides support, feel free to e-mail (sbaicker [at] comcastsportsnet.com. I’m not gonna go into a long argument here, but I have one.
Thanks for the link, Geoff :)

Sarah,
I read your article and understand you are doing your job; what I said was not meant to bring down your work. It’s a long off season, and every now and then I enjoy trying to make a joke, sorry you did not find it humorous.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Hey no sweat – I wasn’t offended or anything (didn’t mean to come across as such!)
The thing is, sooo many people are so anti-Shelley without really ever having seen the guy on the ice (I mean, honestly, how many people here are really familiar with his game? He played 7ish minutes a night in NY — was anyone here watching?) I figured I’d just offer to explain more if anyone wanted!
…Like, all morning I’ve been e-mailing with friends about this defending my position. They’ll probably return here, read this comment, and then get all embarrassed…
I sent you an email about it b/c I’m interested to hear your perspective. I do actually watch a ton of (non-Flyers) hockey, but have a horrible memory, so I rely heavily on advanced stats and stats in general to help refresh my memory (this can be a good and bad thing). Anywho, I’ll leave it to the email.
Thanks for the response.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I think part of the problem I that no one is thrilled to get a guy that was only getting 7 minutes a game for the New York Rangers. Even those of us reserving judgment on how he fits into this lineup (me) aren’t sure how that contract was necessary for a player slotted into that role: fourth line, enforcer, doesn’t PK. Give Shelley for 700-800k for one year, I don’t think you have a backlash outside of WIP.
Do you have professional twitter account?
Because honestly I couldn’t care less about who looks like who or who is making beagles or what any intern has to say about anything … I wouldn’t mind actually reading real news about the sports stuff or even your opinion, but frankly I don’t really give a crap about your personal life … sorry …
Any time :)

This is actually Leino’s third season. His first was with Detroit in ‘08-’09, even know he only played 13 games.

I know, and those games didn’t count towards a registered season, as he was still technically a rookie last year. So I think that makes him technically a sophomore this year!
Wow, good point. Then why the hell isn’t he on that list!

Yeah he definitely needs to be on that list too, we all need to watch him. Plus I think we should watch JVR. With a great offseason of training and a training camp with Laviolette’s condition, I don’t think he’ll hit the wall this season. Plus another season with Giroux and he may well turn into what we are expecting.

You are correct, Sir!
I’ve always had an irrational man-crush on him too. I think it was his name. How kick ass of a name is that?

I thought maybe you liked him b/c he was part of the trade that brought Kapanen to town. The name was more kick ass before the movie came out though.
Is this the right room for an argument?
The movie? Not familiar.
Even still, I was a huge fan of his. I remember it was a big deal when the team gave him #22 (at the time, Luke Richardson’s old number) because it meant he was going to be in the top-6. He didn’t pan out. I think Jim Vandermeer took his spot?
But then came Dennis Seidenberg, who I was also a huge fan of.

Wayne Stephenson
I don’t recall hearing about this earlier, but Bill Meltzer is reporting on Ek’s site that Flyers goalie, Wayne Stephenson, passed away earlier this summer. Those old enough will remember him as Bernie Parent’s backup.

Sarauj, Latvija!
I remember him – he was a very good backup for Bernie Parent. He was the starting and winning goaltender in one of the Flyers’ legendary victories too – against the Soviet Red Army team in 1976 (Bernie was injured at the time).
R.I.P., Wayne.

That was a great game! As a Latvian-American whose parents and grandparents left Latvia at the end of WWII due to the Soviet invasion, we all crowded around the TV set for that game and loved watching the Flyers manhandle the Russian squad.
Sarauj, Latvija!
I just watched it again a few days ago. Yes, the Flyers really did pound the crap out of them. :)
I bet you and your family enjoyed it a little bit more than most did, though. :)

I haven’t seen the game before, just the highlights. I need to watch the whole thing and see us pound the crap out of the CCCP.
But that is sad that Wayne Stephenson passed away. I don’t personally remember him as I am too young, but he was great. R.I.P.

Watch the whole thing – you will thank yourself later. :)
The 10 Greatest Flyers Games DVD set has it – it’s game #4 in the set. Of course, all the games are worth having. I’m hoping that they’ll release a second 10 greatest for the team’s 50th anniversary (we certainly have enough games for another 10).

Haha yeah, we are a team who will have trouble picking the top 10 games of all time, the Caps have to throw in fillers.
But yeah, that is definitely a game I would love to see someday. I think my dad may have the 10 Greatest Flyers games set so I can watch it with him sometime. I’ve seen highlights and the part where they stormed off of the ice and that, but never the whole thing from beginning to end.

Sad, but true...
Bernie’s ‘wing-man’, Wayne Stephenson did pass away earlier this summer.
found this Obit:
WAYNE STEPHENSON Passed away on June 22, 2010 in his 65th year in Madison, Wisconsin. (Formerly of Winnipeg and Philadelphia.) Beloved husband of Nedina; much loved father of Christopher (Meegan), Andrew (Susan), Julie (Bernardo) and Beth (Ryan); and proud grandfather to Artu, Teddy and Georgie. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Lillian Stephenson; and parents-in-law, Ted and Jean Jordan. He is survived by his brother Brian (Holly) and nephew Mathew and niece Lindsey. A family service is planned at a later date.
Wayne Stephenson:
Acquired by the Flyers via trade with the St. Louis Blues, September 16, 1974
Played with Flyers until his trade to the Washington Capitals, August 16, 1979
Member of the 1975 Stanley Cup Champion Team
Represented the Flyers in the NHL All-Star Game in 1976, and 1978.
Over his 5 seasons with the Orange – n – Black…
Regular Season totals: 93 – 35 – 22, 2.74 GAA
Post Season Totals: 10 – 10 – 0, 2.93 GAA
Of all goalies to wear the Orange-N-Black for at least 100 games, only Bob ‘Frosty’ Froese had a higher winning percentage than Wayne’s 69.3%
Wayne Stephenson

That’s a cool mask. I don’t know much about goalie masks back then except the style and remembering that Parent and Lindbergh had the plain white ones, but that mask is very cool. Somebody should do a paint job on their helmet that resembles that retro old-school mask that style this season (looks at Leighton or Backlund)
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
Unfortunately, that would be next to impossible considering that what makes the mask so brilliant is the portion that current masks now have their cage covering (the raccoon eyes part of the mask where the logos meet).
Is this the right room for an argument?
Is there a rule about painting the cage on the mask? I imagine you’d need to be careful not to make it distracting to the goalie, but you could do some interesting things if the cage can be painted.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
They have different cage colors, but I haven’t seen many with different colors on the same cage. I don’t see why you couldn’t (I can ask the goalie on my team tonight if it be distracting if you’d like), but even if you can, the cage wire is so thin, you’d lose a lot of the design in the negative space.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Maybe somebody who is some amazing artist can get the effect using different colors and use the shade with the spaces to get that sort of effect. I am no artist and I don’t think I can descirbe what’s in my head, but somebody should try it.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
I wasn’t thinking anything complicated in the mask, but you could at least have simple shapes based on what color different sections were painted. Like Lindbergh said, it’s hard to describe visual things over a text-based system, but it would give someone a little more canvas to work with.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
Yeah I know it’s impossible with the cages, but I was just speculating it would be a cool thing to try. But maybe they can paint the cage somehow to get a similar effect or something if it was allowed.
Here’s another related question about the masks. I know in the mid 80’s the goaltenders switched to the helmet with cage style masks we have today. Were the old ones not allowed by rule or were the newer ones just superior and nobody uses the old ones. (I know that the older ones aren’t as safe as they can cause career ending eye injuries like with Bernie, but just wondering).

Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
NHL Network just ran a show about the evolution of the goalie mask. The guys who wore the old style mask said that they were very happy about the new cage style mask in the 80s because the old one sat right up against your face, so it was very uncomfortable, didn’t allow much air flow, limited your vision, and it would still hurt alot when you got hit with a puck, but atleast it stopped you from getting cut. So, even if they could still wear the old mask, I’m sure not many would have wanted to.
Sarauj, Latvija!
That’s what I figured. I have worn both before and the newer styles are MUCH more comfortable and safer so I guessed all the goalies wanted to switch. I was just thinking if somebody did want to wear an old style for a throwback game or something would they be allowed or would that be against equipment rules.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
Oops, ignore my posts then. I didn’t realize you wore both. But I don’t know if it ever became a rule change.
Is this the right room for an argument?
No I am just saying that I have tried both on and the newer style is much more comfortable, I have never played goalie in my life and minimal hockey lol. Your post was just fine and all the truth and would be helpful for anybody else who hasn’t tried either on.
I don’t know if it was a rule change or not. I am thinking most likely yes just because of all the regulations on the goalie equipment with pad sizes and such I would think masks would be regulated too.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
Actually I don’t think the NHL cares. As long as the goalies equipment isn’t deemed to be excessive in size, therefor aiding the goaltender in making a save, the NHL doesn’t really seem to care hahaha. I just think they know, no goalie is crazy enough to wear one any more.
If they cared that much, throat guards would be mandatory.
Is this the right room for an argument?
I can’t answer that definitively without googling, but here is my stab at it.
1)Safety, as you mention
2) I’m not old enough to have played with kids that wore the older style, but I would imagine that visibility wasn’t exactly a point of strength in the old masks, outside of not having wire in the way. So as the new masks came out, not only did they provide more safety but better visibility out of the peripherals, etc.as well (with the possible except of looking down).
3) Again, I never played with anyone who wore one, but I’d imagine the sound in the old school cages when they got hit with a puck was miserable. So I would have to guess that the new cages that first came out offered, not only better protection, but better acoustics
It’s not like playing D or O where a helmet effects your view of the ice, a half shield hampers your vision further, and a cage stops you from seeing even more. So with extra protection, comes a loss of vision. I imagine (again, a guess, that the new style helmets helped not only protection, but also with he vision (assuming they got used to looking through the wire).
Is this the right room for an argument?
Actually
There is a guy on the Chiefs in my men’s league that plays with the old school mask, or did up until last season. Next time we play them I’ll ask him why he stuck with it for so long, and the differences between the masks.
Is this the right room for an argument?
League Rule on Goalie Equipment/Masks
Rule 11 – Goal Keeper’s Equipment
11.1 Goalkeeper’s Equipment – With the exception of skates and stick, all the equipment worn by the goalkeeper must be constructed solely for the purpose of protecting the head or body, and he must not wear any garment or use any contrivance which would give him undue assistance in keeping goal.
The League’s Hockey Operations Department is specifically authorized to make a check of each teams’ equipment (including goalkeepers’ sticks) to ensure the compliance with the rule. It shall report its findings to the Commissioner for his disciplinary action.
11.7 Masks – Protective masks of a design approved by the League may be worn by goalkeepers. Protective masks deemed to be worn only to increase stopping area will be considered illegal.
So nothing specifically prohibiting them outside of a goalie wants to still have his eyes in his skull after the game. I could see a goalie wearing a throwback for warm ups, but never putting his safety at risk during game play.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Yeah I figured that a goalie won’t want to risk their safety, plus most goalies if not all are used to the cage style and it would be a hard adjustment to make for a game to do it once for a throwback. But maybe a cool idea for a warmup for a team doing a throwback night or a Winter Classic or Heritage Classic. I think it’d get a good reception.

You can hear David Booth tell one of the kids in the Root Beer Summit to “wait until he’s not looking and go all Mike Richards on him”.

I am glad he wanted to stay in North America and with the organization. It seems that he really likes the Flyers and wants to play in the NHL, hopefully he’ll get the starting job soon. He also seems like he is very well liked by everybody on the Phantoms.
I am upset that he was injured and had to play through it. But that shows he’s tough and a team player (or was pressured by the Flyers to play before he was ready which seems to happen). At least he is recovering and hopefully will be ready to go for training camp.

Richards to wing.
To discuss something of actual interest and that got overlooked with the Gagne trade. Did we at all discuss the possibility of Richards moving to wing as ASF suggested might be what is going to happen.
Which side did he play on in the Olympics he is left handed so maybe he will play on the LW with Zherdev and Carter.
If I missed the bulk of the discussion somewhere else could someone link me and I apologize.
I can only see this happening if they choose to sign Carter long term. If Richards is here for 100 years, why move a great 2 way center to wing just for a few years of Carter. I’d rather him stay at center. If they sign Carter long term, I’m fine with Richards trying the wing.
Is this the right room for an argument?
With the Backlund comment, I can see his English being the real culprit. By saying he was “forced” I would bet he really meant something like, “I had to play because we were so hurt by injuries.”
Or our sensitivity as American sports fans is at fault. Of course he did damage to his body, that’s the nature of pro sports. They are paid a fat check to commit violence against their bodies, and I think other countries/cultures (England springs to mind) have a more public recognition of this.
I have been witnessing this difference up close for the past year, and you’re right – the expectation and rhetoric are different.
Both nations’ fans want their best players to play and to play their very best when they are in the game, especially for the money they are paid; however, if an injury to anyone lasts longer than a game or two (or a week/month or two, depending on the sport and the injury itself), there is much less toleration of the injury in North America than over here. For example, the soccer players here are every bit as well-payed as the top professional athletes in North America, but, if they get injured here, it’s assumed that they really can’t play and that, if they could play, the athlete would be in the game. Coaches here also won’t put anyone back in the game unless they are 100% or as close as possible to it. Thus, the injured athlete won’t be lambasted in the press endlessly over here. (The absence of radio stations dedicated to sports may be part of the reason.) They are likely to be abused in the print press for apparent lack of effort and/or execution, but even this is done usually on a team basis rather than on an individual basis. (Of course, there are exceptions, but, if individual attacks occur in the press, they are usually on the players who are openly cocky.)

Now, if any news involved a player’s personal life, then the press here are like stink on shit. Any “news” will be in the papers for days/weeks on end…

Right. My thing was, he didn’t have to play exactly. He might have had to practice, but even then, he doesn’t have to. The team could have shot at Jeremy Duchesne at practice.
To me, if Backlund was hurt, all he had to do was get dressed and sit on the bench, then play two minutes against Boston. He shouldn’t be practicing, and he wasn’t playing.
But yeah, your interpretation is probably what he meant.
