Bill Guerin hoping to get a tryout offer with the Flyers
I would take him but I wonder if there is a spot for him on the team?

Oh my God.
Hey, our older players wore down as the playoffs wore on. Let’s bring in Bill Guerin. That’ll help because he’s only…
Wait.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
The team as a whole was exhausted by the end of the playoffs. This was ESPECIALLY true of our older players. They could not keep up.

I agree that everyone was gassed, I just don’t see which older players you’re pointing at as being particularly tired. Hell, if it was so team-wide (exhibit A: Mike Richards, young person), I’m not sure conditioning wouldn’t be to blame. Regardless, our most productive offensive line in the Finals featured our three of our four oldest offensive forwards.
If Guerin wants to sign here we need to make room for him. He would be a nice addition for a year, just park his big ass in front of the net
That’s definitely his strong suit and something I don’t think the Penguins took advantage of enough. He’s also just a solid all-around good guy, so he could be a nice veteran presence in the locker room.
Guy loves his beer too.

Dear God, in a store that just from this small sampling obviously sells GOOD beer, why is he sitting in front of the Bud products…Blech!

A very good move; possible resolution for line problems
We can maybe perceive this as Asham for Guerin. I’m all for that.
I wanted them to get Guerin each of the last 2 years anyway (including during the 2009 trade deadline, when he went to Pittsburgh and the Flyers ended up with the idiotic cap moves Homer made).
I don’t care who ends up waived or in the minors. Shelley? Bartulis? Carcillo? Walker? Clearly Guerin brings more value than Shelley, more short term value than the Wolf, and probably more value than Carcillo. Walker was a salary dump for Yzerman. Could also be that Betts or Pronger start the season on the injured list. The only question is whether the Flyers would be willing to eat the $$$. Note that they do indeed have cap room (though not roster space without a waiver or an injury placement) if Guerin is willing to make $800K or less.
FYI, this would continue Homer’s trend of making great value pickups (Leino, Zherdev, now maybe Guerin; reminds me of the awesome Gillick pickups like Werth and the 2008 Dobbs) interspersed with complete insanity (Gagne, Shelley, etc.; reminds me of Glen Sather and the current Seattle Mariners’ GM).
Now, I gotta get back to work!
Raul Ibanez: since Moyer is on the DL, he is fast becoming our favorite old guy.
Rooting against a certain LW for the Tampa Bay Lightning will be impossible.
What often is forgotten about Gillick is that he made some absolutely atrocious moves as GM of the Phillies. No one remembers because he won the WS, but he made some really awful ones.
Freddy Garcia for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez was arguably one of the worst trades in Phillies history. And the Phils got almost nothing of value for Abreu.
Just to say, even “great” GMs make stupid decisions.
In fairness, the Freddy Garcia trade looks terrible in hindsight. At the time, who was complaining? Nobody. The only thing that’s worth criticizing is that the Phillies didn’t put him through a physical. Other than that, Gio was a throw in with Rowand, so the Phillies just gave him back. Floyd wasn’t going anywhere in this organization – for good reason – and the team needed another ace. It’s only a “terrible” trade because Garcia was/got hurt.
The Abreu deal… well, that’s a different story.

The real problem with the Garcia trade was believing that he was an ace in the first place. He’d only had one season with an ERA below 3.50 when we acquired him, and his underlying stats were always pretty mediocre. He threw alot of innings, which was what made him valuable, but he wasn’t an ace. I remember at the time people justified the trade by saying that “he won 17 games last year”. God, that sort of thinking seems dated now.
Wrong place for a baseball debate though, I guess.
Ace was the wrong word, you’re right. But he was an above average pitcher 6 of the 8 years prior to coming to Philly. The only two years he was below average were 02 and 03.
But yeah, I don’t care enough to talk about Freddy G.

The Abreu deal worked out in my eyes in the end, not in terms of what we got (or didn’t get) back, but I think it was good for the team to get his cocky ego out of the locker room. Chemistry kicked in very shortly after he left, in my opinion.

Sarah Baicker thinks he would take Carcillo’s spot. Do you guys agree? I think it would be him or Shelley.
If I could get Guerin for Shelley money, keep Carbomb and Powe, and lose Shelley, I would be on it like stink on a monkey!
