Everyone gave their opinion of what their perfect off-season would be right after the cup. Most of them sounded like this: Improve goaltending, try not to change much else, maybe add a winger. There were lots of different variations of that, but now that it's all said and done I figured out my ideal off-season looking back.
-No Meszaros (+4 million in cap space)
-Keep Gaggy (-5.5 million in cap space)
-No Leighton (+1.5 million in cap space)
-No Walker (+1.7 mil in cap space)
-No Zherdev (+2 mil)
-No Carcillo (+1 mil)
-Guerin is a perfect fit in the "ideal" off-season (-.7-1 mil)
That leaves us with : Richards/Carter/Gagne. Briere/Lieno/Harts. G/JVR/Guerin. Betts/Powe/Lappy. Pronger/Carle. Kimmo/Coburn. OD/Bartulis. Boucher/(begin debating). That would be the roster and an additional (I'm not good with capgeek so I'm just using my numbers from above) four million in cap space to get a goalie, 7th defender and 13th forward. Personally, I loved our offseason. I think Carcillo will be gone and Guerin will step in and score another 20 goals. I also have a theory why they stuck with Leighton. First off he's firmilliar. Secondly, if he plays like he did for the most part last year, we will be fine with our boulstered defense. By fine I mean top five defensive teams in the league. Third, we have 3 options if he falters, all with tons to proover. Boosh played admirably every time he was called upon. Backlund was the Phantom's MVP and has a Flyers logo on his helmet. He wants to be in the show and I think that given the opportunity he can flourish. That leaves Bobrovsky as the wild card. Yeah he gave up a week two goals in teh rookie game, but like it was said earlier .933 save percentage is fine by me. We didn't want to lock anyone up long term because we have legitimate long term options (another one being our top prospect in hockeyfutures.com, over Bob, Jokeem Eriksson (horrible spelling, I know)) that we dont want to be blocked by a middle of the road goale (Steve Ellis, Marty Biron, etc.) for next year or the year after.
Most of you guys know I'm the ultimate optimist when it comes to the Flyers but what do you guys think of the off-season as a whole, with Billy Guerin being the cherry on top?
