SB Nation's Mock NHL Expansion Draft: Finalizing Our Flyers Protected List

Photo

The votes are in and our list is complete.

We've made some tough decisions and some easy ones. We've angered some people, but hey, that's part of the business. The following players are eligible to be plucked away from the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 SB Nation Mock NHL Expansion Draft:

G: Brian Boucher

D: Matt Walker, Sean O`Donnell, Oskars Bartulis

F: Jody Shelley, Dan Carcillo, Darroll Powe, Blair Betts, Greg Moore

The draft will take place today, on Thursday, and the results will be announced next Tuesday, after the Labor Day holiday. Gabe Desjardins of Behind The Net is running the new Winnipeg franchise, while James Mirtle of The Globe & Mail is running the new Quebec franchise.

After the jump, let's look at which Flyers players were protected and which players were exempt from this process.

Star-divide

Here's our final protected list:

G: Michael Leighton

D: Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros

F: Danny Briere, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, James van Riemsdyk, Claude Giroux, Nikolai Zherdev, Ville Leino, Ian Laperriere, Scott Hartnell

And the exempted players:

G Johan Backlund, Sergei Bobrovsky, Nicola Riopel, Brian Stewart

D: Erik Gustafsson, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Joonas Lehtivuori, Kevin Marshall, Tyler Hostetter, Dan Jancevski

F: Mike Testwuide, Andrew Rowe, Stefan Legein, David Laliberte, Andreas Nodl, Garrett Klotz, Ben Holmstrom, Luke Pither, Shane Harper, Eric Wellwood, Zac Rinaldo, Patrick Maroon, Matt Clackson

Annd, there you have it. Two of our players will be taken in draft today, but we can only lose either one goalie OR one defenseman. So, we'll lose one of Boosh, O'Donnell, Walker and Bartulis, as well as one of the forwards that are unprotected.

Who do you hope they pick?

Hopefully Matt Walker and Jody Shelley.

But realistically, Blair Betts and Brian Boucher are gone.

Boucher may not be a bad choice, but do you really think there aren’t going to be two better goalies available?

by thasmin on Sep 2, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t realize there were two expansion teams. I’m not positive that Boucher will be taken, but it’s obviously more likely.

I know J-S Giguere is available, as well as Pascal Leclaire

Just a quick look around – Chris Osgood and Josh Harding are available too. And the Boston SCOC seems to have some,um, disagreement on their participation, but it looks like they’d leave Thomas unprotected. I didn’t take the time to see who had the best cap friendly deal, but there’s some talent available. Our old pal Niittimaki too and Patrick Lalime.

yes but these teams need back-ups too. and boosh is a very reliable reasonably priced back up

by tmurder on Sep 2, 2010 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d say that Gabe picks Harding

So, people pretty much picked the best player (+Lappy), regardless of other concerns. Are people confident in this team for this year, then?

Farewell, Blair. Once again stabbed in the back by a fanbase you pampered. Take a puck in the face next time and people will recognize you’re the best fourth liner in the league.

Farewell, maybe, Boosh. We abuse you like we do our girlfriends, and you offer nothing but love. Thank for being exactly what we signed you for: a back-up that can fill in admirably, in case of (a shit ton of) injuries. And I’ll admit, you do have dreamy eyes.

Farewell, I think, Dan Carcillo. One of those two will take you, simply so they don’t have to play against you. (And for the 80+ minutes of PP time you’ll offer.)

Gabe might take Carcillo because he loves players who draw penalties. LOVES them.

Seriously think Betts is gone? Even with his injury history? Is he valued that highly around the league? From how he got here I have to think there are a lot of rose colored glasses out there. I love his play and what he brings, but still…

Carcillo I can live with going. His Darcy Tucker-ishness wears thin. I like agitators, and people do hate him, but I think maybe a better scoring hand would be a better fill for him.

When James Mirtle did his stats-based analysis on who should be candidates for the Selke trophy, his conclusion was that Blair Betts was the most deserving by his criteria. I think that definitely increases his likelihood of being taken, since Mirtle is one of the GMs.

They could take Walker and Shelley, and I’d be willing to bribe them to do so.

The worst possible outcome would be losing Bartulis and Betts. Bartulis because he’s part of the next youth group on D (read: inexpensive) and Betts because no one has his defensive or faceoff skills. Boucher could be replaced by simply promoting Backlund, Carcillo and Powe can be replaced on the roster – perhaps not their particular individual skills, but rough approximations. O’Donnell would be a loss, but not an unmanageable one.

Maybe it should read "reformedpenguinsfan" since I have retired my Lemeiux jersey ... and purchased an Orange and Black Pronger jersey.

Are they drafting live? Might be fun to watch a chat where they announce their picks…

I was wondering this too.

There’s been a week’s worth of foreplay for this and you’re going to ram it home that quick?

You guys ever think of using a program like ventrilo or teamspeak? That would allow for others to join and listen in or you could also record it and upload after it’s complete?

Probably too late for this, but it’s another idea!

It was a pretty dull proceeding anyway, really.

Draft

Following the rules for the 2000 expansion draft I imagine?

52 players were chosen in the draft, two from each participating franchise. Only one goaltender or one defensemen could be selected from each franchise. Both the Blue Jackets and the Wild were to use their first 24 selections on three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards. The final two picks for each team could be any position.

i would think Bartulis is a goner b/c of his age, he is more attractive than o’donnel. for forwards it comes down to powe or carcillo and what needs the team has to fill.

if i had to guess, we lose carbomb and the latvian wolf.

OT: But does Niemi's 1 yr @ 2mil make the Leighton resigning more or less ridiculous?

Discuss.

Looking forward to the Kevin Kolb era.

That’s very interesting. Both are fairly unproven, Niemi just has his name on the Cup.

Realistically you should unprotect some high salary player who is old expansion teams don’t won’t to take on high salary to start and want to build young. I think Bartulis should be protected for that reason he is young can play and has good salary.

Maybe unprotect Danny or Hartnell has this could be way to get rid of those contracts.

Retraction Draft

I think the NHL needs a retraction draft.
Every year, the worst of all these expansion teams in bad hockey markets that are losing money will be forced to fold, and their players redistributed into the rest of the league.
Muhahah!

First of all, that would be considered contraction, not retraction.

Second of all, keep dreaming because that will never happen.
