Bobrovsky, Flyers prevail in 4-3 shootout victory over Devils
[Boxscore] - [SBN Game Page] - [New Jersey Reaction]
The Flyers picked up where they left off against the New Jersey Devils a year ago, winning yet another hockey game against their rivals from the north. This time, a third period comeback, a solid performance from Sergei Bobrovsky and a fun overtime and shootout gave the good guys the victory.
Let's get right to the bullet points, since it's preseason and all the little particulars don't matter.
- Michael Leighton looked good for a while, but as the second period progressed, we quickly remembered why we're not so excited about him. Holy rebound control, Batman.
- It took 9 minutes of third period play for Sergei Bobrovsky to see his first shot. His first real save came on just the second shot he saw, where he slid post-to-post to keep the Devils from opening a two-goal lead. The quickness is incredible.
- Bob's glove save on Jason Arnott late in the third was also quite incredible.
- In the shootout, he let up one softie, but overall, Bobrovsky looked pretty solid. He's clearly learned a bit on how to cut down the angles on the North American rink... and it's only been a week. We probably shouldn't get too excited just yet, but his performance was promising.
- Claude Giroux looked great on the Flyers first goal, getting a shot off after dragging three Devils towards him. A wide-open Darroll Powe stuffed the rebound home. His shootout goal was fantastic, but you could've guessed that.
More bullets, as well as the season's first comment of the night, after the jump.
- Jeff Carter also poked a pretty one home out of mid-air past Johan Hedberg in the first period.
- The white jerseys look great.
- Ian Laperriere layed out and blocked a shot tonight. It's September 21st.
- And JVR looked even better in them. You can tell that the bulk he's added is already paying off. Whether he's driving to the net or trying to win a puck battle, he looks much better equipped.
- Danny Briere ripped a shot by Devils goalie Mike McKenna that looked a hell of a lot like the goal he scored on Marty Brodeur in the playoffs last season.
- Andrej Meszaros has a pretty good point shot.
- Braydon Coburn was fierce tonight, using the body and whatnot.
Comment of the Night

Likewise. Thursday should be even better since there won’t be a Phillies game to switch back and forth with.

Here are the videos for tonight’s fights: Matt Walker vs. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Jody Shelley vs Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond.

You couldn’t dream of a better first game for Bob than tonight. Still doesn’t make him a surefire starter or regular yet, but at least he hasn’t done anything yet to take him out of the running.
but at least he hasn’t done anything yet to take him out of the running.
At this point, this is actually pretty huge. The longer the kid is in the mix the better. Such an exciting thought!

between studying…the phils…and andy reid’s “you think you know stupid Paul Holmgren? watch this!” move to start Vick, I missed this one. good to hear Bobs played well.
I know this question has been asked throughout the offseason, but are we really going to carry Walker’s salary?
Starting Vick is going to create more problems than it fixes and will hurt our future. Unless the Eagles make the Superbowl, it will go down as a short-sighted short-term mistake imo.
Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

that was a pretty exciting game to be at, but it had a pretty poor turn out (understandably). the building was really loud though even though it was half empty. i was pretty impressed with holmstrom, he laid out a huge body check and held his own out there, on the pk and everything. zherdev looks like a lot of fun too.
According to a sales rep in the Flyers ticket office, Wells Fargo reserved a lot of tickets for the pre-season games as part of an employee appreciation program they were doing. I picked up a 11 game plan and 1 game was pre-season against, I believe, Buffalo. They gave me 7 regular season games to replace that game with.
My Thoughts
Zherdev – Mixed feelings. Flashes of brilliance at times, downright sluggishness at other times, but then again, so did everyone at times. Maybe it’s just preseason.
JVR – He’s fired up in a big time way. I think he feels with all the faces coming in, he has to make a mark and now. Thankfully, I think he can. I don’t think he’s going to have a fuck-off, crazy, breakout season… yet. I think this will be another year of growing and then with next offseason, he’ll come back a beast.
Guerin – Why isn’t he signed yet?
Giroux – Jesus crappin’ christ… this guy is sick. He’s all over the puck. If Zherdev proves to be whom he was before, what with the head not extricated from the ass, front line. Please.
Nodl – Did the Devil’s piss in his cheerios or something? He came out strong and pissed. I like that kind of fire.
Shelly – Meh, did not not really impress me for what we paid.
Coburn – See Nodl. It’s like Brodeur phoned Coburn before to let him know he just ate a double stack off Coburn’s mom, and he had to find someone to wreck. Somethings gotten into the man, and whatever demon’s possessed him? Leave it!
Bo…Bobov… Ohh what the hell ever his name is, showed some real promise.
My Thoughts
Goalies: Leights was Leights, made all of the saves he was supposed to make… except one. Controled most of the rebounds… except one bad one. Bob was great. Excited about him in the future.
Defense: Coubs playd great. Walker was eeh, atleast he dropped the gloves, and then almost did it again. Kimmo was Kimmo, quiet but deadly. Carle went unnoticed to me as did OD. Bartulilis was out there for a goal off of a rebound that he didn’t clear. Surprise, surprise surprise.
Offense: Carter, Richie, and Zherdev looked good. The first two really good, and like said above, Zherdev showed flashes of brillience but then looked confused, which is understandable. I actually called my Ranger fan early in the game bragging about him, he looked so good early. He did a very good Giroux impression throwin the puck between his legs. If there was a question if playoff Briere or regular season Briere would show up at the start of ‘10, after that performance I’d say we saw playoff Briere. JVR looked s-t-r-o-n-g. Big draw of the penalty in OT, he just looked smarter and more composed. Guerin looked slow early, but caught on later. Time will tell with him. Shelly, it was good to see him drop the gloves… so so fight, but he will rumble with Colton Orr against the leafs. Look at those rumbles on hockeyfights.com from last year. Powe was himself, a wrecking ball, and helped out on offense when an opportunity presented itself. Ben Holmstrom looked sloppy and overmatched, IMO, early, but like Guerin he grew on me. Layed the wood, sucsessful penalty kill. And if he gets nothing out of this game but one thing, he got to PK with Lappy. That has to help his development. Giroux picked up from the playoffs, he just looked so freakin fast. Nodl was quiet which is good for him. I think thats everyone. Fun game to watch. Good W. Good Phills W. I hope… hope hope hope that BOB gets some more opportunites because he looked awesome. I’d love to see him get tested.

I wish I could have watched this game. Asinine NYC blackout for all NYC sports teams, even though the Devils aren’t even a NY team. Nor the Giants or Jets for that matter, but I digress. I understand in the regular season when they show the games on MSG or MSG+, but to blackout a preseason game that’s only being shown on NHL network? Grr. Thankfully I have you guys to keep me posted on what happened (and hopefully the 6 AM repeat I’m recording will not be blacked out as the midnight repeat is..)
So Zherdev looked good? All I get to see is his -3 in the box score but I imagine the goals weren’t all his fault. Good to hear about JVR looking strong, we have the depth to patiently let him grow up.
Leighton and Bob
Alright, I haven’t turned into a Leighton apologist yet, but if his biggest problem is going to be rebound control, I might be able to deal. If the Flyers continue to field a strong defense, they should be able to swallow those rebounds up and limit scoring chances from them.
As far as Bob goes, obviously pretty strong, but I really want to see him in a full game of action where he has to deal with traffic in front and shots from different angles.
Bob on the job looked pretty good last night. And his quickness from post to post is just insane. I wonder what was going through his head as he went into the shoot out?
Leighton, looked pretty good as well.
It was nice to see Carter finding the net again and Giroux is just a beast on the ice.
Any news on when or if Boosh will be playing next game?
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and Steelers. Deal with it.
Bobrovsky
I’m torn. I know his development would be best in the AHL, but I also don’t want to see Nic and Backs stuck in the goalie jam without getting enough opportunity. The fact is that the only two guys I don’t really see much point in playing are the two guys who are probably going to be on the NHL roster (Leighton and Boucher). One of them has to go I believe, that way we can put Backlund/Bobrovsky in as the NHL backup and have the Bob/Backs-Nic tandem in the AHL.

I am hoping Boucher will be Cote’s assistant in Glen Falls come October, Backlund will be the backup.
Yes I know Cote isn’t he head coach but he still needs an assistant to get coffee and pack his bag etc..
Bring it on Geoff. /Testwuide’d
I was surprised when he was there for the finals. I though bouchers career was over with the injury, age, and skill level.

Boosh is like 33. I know that’s kind of hard to comprehend since the Flyers drafted him forever ago, but it’s kind of like Gagne being 30. You’d think he’d be a lot older than he is since he’d been here a decade already.

B) Backlund is not healthy;
C) Boucher would not retired;
D) Even if he did, he would have no reason to stay in the organization if they force him to retire.

I didn’t mean Boucher would be an assistant coach or even a goalie coach for that matter. I meant Cote’s assistant as in personal assistant.

Geoff gets frustrated with Testwuide hype, so when Chris takes a shot at him, he’ll add that at the end now.

Ok, so it doesn’t have anything to do with it then just a jab for jabs sake. Thanks.

Man, I wish I had been able to see it, but I was playing a concert last night. I’m psyched about Giroux, JVR, and Bob. If Bob makes the team, he’d be a great secret weapon pick in my fantasy draft this weekend…
Lightning strikes once, Hextall strikes twice!
I thought the same thing on the fantasy front. Could be a big sleeper.
During the game on tv they showed some Lavy interview snip-its and he said that as pre-season moves on the goalies will see a full 60 minutes but the first couple will be split. We’ll see how a full game goes and him keeping focused for 60 mins.
My thoughts....
Giroux looked like he was the only guy on the ice who knew about the speed burst button he looked extremely quick not fast but quick darting to the puck. Too bad he was playing the no hands team in Powe and Nodl as he wingers or that line could have put up big points.
Zherdev was a better passer than I expected and was noticeable he seems to have that ability to play without the puck more than I expected and get to dangerous spots with his stick on the ice. -3 for the game not good but still that line was threatening on much shifts.
O’Donnell was much faster and a much better puck handler than I expected. For whatever reason I expected a more pylon like Hatcher type D-Man and O’Donnell made lots nice subtle plays with the puck to stop the pressure and get out the zone.
Meszaros did not impress me in the D-Zone he seemed all over the place and made some turnovers that everyone pretty much said was his MO. He look a lot more comfortable on the attack and hopefully that translates well to the PP.
Powe played really well I usually bash the guy but he looked better.
Bartulis looked physically over-matched.
Danny B. looked like his chippy self and that was one hell of a shot to get the tying goal.
Leighton look so so rebounds and such like usual.
BOB looked really fast with a quick glove hand but he played a little too deep in his net for comfort.
If the officials got paid for that game someone call the cops because they were stealing money they didn’t call anything and they didn’t even bother breaking up fights.
agreed with most points
however, it’s the preseason. let them fight

Yeah, I thought our defensive zone coverage-forwards included—looked spotty in general, especially in that second period. And the word for Meszaros’ defensive play is definitely “uncomfortable.” Had a nice slap pass, though.
-I’d add Richie and Briere to your list of people who found the Turbo button.
-Everyone is all over Bobo (Can we please go with this over Bob?), but I thought the few saves he was asked to make were in his flashy, reflex-driven wheelhouse. I wanted to see him pounded down low by a good cycle before he garners any real attention from me. Although, his tracking movement on Elias (I believe) in the shootout was very confident.
-Didn’t really see Shelley much in the defensive zone,
When I told my one friend that Bobrovsky was in net last night he was like “What? Brovloski? Kyle Brovloski is playing goal for the Flyers?” So he is calling Bob Kyle for the rest of his career.
Haha, THIS!!!! I would love to see this.
Plus a dead Kenny will freak out any opposing shooter.

To add to Leighton, he also committed to the butterfly way too soon, way too often. He basically looks like he did in the finals last season. I know he’s big, and if he keeps himself upright, can take up a lot of net in the butterfly…but honestly, he looked to go to it before he even read the shot, which makes me nervous. I’m worried, and I’m hoping Reese is working on it.
Is this the right room for an argument?
The only time I noticed that was during the Zubrus goal he was down early. But he made the initial save and stayed in the butterfly. I don’t think that was a instance of going down too early. He could have stood up back but I am not sure he knew where the pucks was, not a good thing. If you popped up Zubrus could have beat him low or five hole staying down take away the low percentage shots at let Zubrus try to pick the corner on you. Being that Zubrus usually shoots right into the goalies logo for most of his career that is not a bad plan.
Other than that it was rebound control that bothered me.
The Zubrus goal was him misplaying a puck. He went down to deflect a weak shot/dump to the corner/sideboards, and threw it right back out in front. That really wasn’t an instance of him going down to early.
You can notice it even when he hugs the post when the play is behind the net, he is already in a crouch position, forcing him to stop a potential shot from in front (coming from a pass behind the net) starting in the butterfly. But even that I can live with, but he better hope the shot is coming from in close, or he is in trouble. But on shots in general, ones from the point are easier to notice, he is already going down as the player is making contact with his stick on the puck. Just watch for it next time; I don’t expect you to notice everything that I notice, or me to notice everything you notice. It was something I was looking for when I went to the game last night, so I took note of it more. Plus it’s something easier to see live b/c you aren’t dependent on camera angles.
Is this the right room for an argument?
No argument here.
Question for you or whoever knows goaltending philosophy.
Do you think Leighton is instructed to go in the butterfly earlier when players are in tight because of his larger frame means the top of the net is still well covered? And should dropping early help to keep the five hole closed? Also can you move faster side to side in the butterfly by sliding on the ice versus that more stand-up style push off the post type of move?
He not only butterflys, but he also paddles down quite a lot when the play is in tight (or even far out, see the goal that broke all our hearts). While it’s useful in some cases, like plays right around the net, I’m going to be watching him this season to see how often he does it.
I think being big, and butterflying earlier can make up for a lot of other technical and positional weaknesses. It’s not unheard of for large tenders to do that, if you watch Hiller or Steve Mason they do it quite often. As for his 5-hole, from what I’ve seen, Leighton has pretty terrible stick positioning.
That is something that needs to be worked on.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
I thought when Leights was on his run in the regular season, he did a better job of staying up until he read the shot. Like Todd said, bigger goalies can drop down early to the butterfly to make up for other technical deficiencies. The important thing when dropping down, is to make sure you keep your upper body upright. If you watch people who start playing goal, you will notice how small they are in net when they first start going in to the butterfly…it’s hard to teach yourself how to do (this coming from goalies I’ve grown up playing with, I myself have never played that position), but you would expect a pro to be more than competent in this area.
I just prefer a goalie that does not over commit. I think there is a healthy balance, even for butterfly goalies, between getting as much net covered as you can for the shot and over committing yourself to being down.
As far as lateral movement goes, it depends. If a goalie is on a post, it is much easier for them to push off to the other side while in the butterfly. If not, it is easier to move laterally while upright. There is also some personal preference in that too. Our goalie has terrible lateral movement while upright, and relies on the butterfly position to move side to side too much.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Leighton is more of a blocking goalie than a reactionary goalie. The problem comes when he gets too “blocky” and doesn’t react to shots properly but instead goes into his save selection for a shot from that position.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
Yeah I agree. That’s why I think Reese having him move deeper in the crease really work for Leighton…it fit his style very well.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Fits his style, or partly fixes his technique and positioning problems?
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011
Mourning Gagne forever.
A would say some of both, with it leaning one way or the other depending on your opinion of Leights haha.
Is this the right room for an argument?
Leighton’s biggest weakness is the long shot from the point because his rebound control is lacking and his vision through traffic isn’t the greatest. Blocking shots and clearing the front of the net is going to be key for his success and our teams ultimate success.
Actually I think him stopping the initial shot from the point, while screened, is one of his strong suites. I think his big frame, as long as he keeps his upper body upright and doesn’t paddle down as Todd mentions, lends itself to being good on screened shots while in the butterfly.
Is this the right room for an argument?
