RISK: NHL EDITION (A FHL brought to you by BSH)
Hey guys, figured I would set up a thread here regarding our 6 team/6division Fantasy quest for hockey dominance. Todd made the statement, and he is right, the message board on the Yahoo FHL site truly does suck. So in an effort to take a little pressure of Lindy (until his internet issues are solved), I figured I would set up a thread here since we are all here more or less throughout the day, and I think we still need to get everyone's input on finalizing some of the particulars regarding the rules for our little experiment.
I think we have solved the question about how to complete our draft, I suggested, and Lindy liked it, using the Autodraft. We all need to go in and set up our pre-draft rankings as Lindy plans to set the draft to 'Ready' on Monday (Labor Day). I know Todd has already set his up, mine will be in today. This should go off without a hitch since each of us will only be ranking players from our assigned divisions, everyone will get just who they ask for. I would suggest when ranking your players, put your 5 goalies in first, then fill out the next 20 (or is it 21...see, that's what I mean, we all need to chime in for a consensus) slots with your forwards and defense.
ITEMS IN THE AIR?
1. What is the final starting roster make-up? How many Set Forward positions, and How Many generic Forward positions. How many on the Bench?
Being Captain Suggestion, I (of course) have a thought...
I suggest the starting roster consist of: 3LW, 3C, 3RW, 3F, 6D, 5G - 23 total players
I suggest a bench size of 3 players which would allow carrying 2 additional forwards and a defenseman
that would give us a total roster of 26 players.
2. I am pretty sure Lindy capped the games for the goalie position, this to allow for those divisions that do not have 2-3 'workhorse' goalies...not sure of the exact number he maxed it at, I suggested it to be 328 (total number of players minus 1 then multiplied by 82 games). Though in hind sight I am going to suggest rounding it up to 350.
The question is should we install a similar cap on the forward and defensive position as well, again using the same type of formula? this would give a max game cap of 902 (round it up to 925) for the forwards, and 410 (round up to 450) for the defense. I think having a game cap would help to alleviate some of the need for shuffling between your bench players and the waiver wire.
3. I am fine with this being a points/rotisserie league, BUT, what are everyone's thought on going H2H? Division against Division? It would be fairly easy to set it up as 2 conferences (we could keep them the same as the real world, or throw the 6 teams in the air and see where they fall). I do realize that H2H requires a little more hands on work, but it could be cool. Setting up a 25 week season would have us each play against each other 5 times, and would allow for us to set up a "RISK CUP FINAL"
So, anyway...these are my thoughts, this is our thread...What do you guys think?

I’d suggest 25 players (for rounding, even purposes), meaning two bench spots. Other than that, I like the 3, 3, 3, 3, 6, 5 format.
As far as caps go, whatever. Sounds good to me, I have no qualms, yada yada yada. I’d suggest a minimum games played, unless we’re all fairly confident the 6 of us will at least check our teams occasionally. I don’t want any teams with 5 guys injured in the lineup. I don’t think this will be a problem, but just in case New Zealand sinks into the ocean, this might be a good idea.
I’ll do my rankings sometime soon, no worries. Good call on drafting the goalies first. Did we agree that you must have one goalie from each team? Is anybody going to skirt the rules and draft Nik Khabibulin, DOC #301-34-879?

Reading this, I realize what a real fantasy league noob I am… whateverrr :D So basically I’m only guessing what you guys are talking about so I won’t complain about anything…
How about them Devils? You get Kovalchuk? Who has Atlantic Division? :D

I have the Atlantic. We’ll see if Kovalchuk is on the Devils…. I’m not going to draft him until he has an approved contract, he’s still a FA in my eyes and I think if this one gets rejected he may bolt for the KHL.
It’s cool having the Atlantic since I have the Flyers, but I have to have players we all hate like Brodeur and Crosby and Malkin (I respect them and think they’re good, just hate them when they play the Flyers).
Also I have no clue who my goalie from the Islanders is going to be. At least I know who will take one of my IR spots all season (cough cough DiPietro cough cough).
I think my biggest problem will be to keep down the number of Flyers I want, not sure who I’m putting on yet.

I have a question...
when we said min. 3 players from each team, does it include or exclude the goalies?

The 3 player minimum does NOT include the goalies. 1 goalie from each of your 5 teams must be on roster.

Ah....Sweet Debate :)
Exactly why I set this bad boy up…
25 player roster is good with me.
Not sure we need a minimum, as 95% of roster is starting, i was thinking more of a max, so no one is accumulating additional points/games, by switching out bench or waiver players. plus it alleviates having to adjust rosters more than 1 or 2 times a week.
What are the thoughts on setting the league to be H2H?

I dont think thats an issue, it your bench and you can fill it out how you choose, i merely stated it the other way to keep an extra body for each skater position :)

Hey, thanks for making this thread. Coming to BSH isn’t a problem, since my internship doesn’t block it (if they do… man oh man will I not be happy), just fantasy sports is blocked, so I can’t do much with the league.
My internet will be solved next week as I’m switching providers. This weekend I’ll be away with internet so I can manage the league. If all of us have our rankings set before Monday I can switch it to ready before then.
For the game caps, I can’t check now but I looked through the commish tools and couldn’t see any of those settings, so I think those are post-draft, but I’ll change it when I can. I like your number for the goalies, but for all the skaters, I think just giving each position the standard 82 game cap will work. That will prevent any “abuse” with people adding and dropping to get more games, but will also allow us to get a full season from each position. I don’t think scrambling to fill the games will be a problem since we’ll have bench players and not all players play the same night, I think that will work out great.
So I guess when I get to set the league up I’ll change it to the 3C, 3LW, 3RW, 3F, 6D, and I guess 2 bench (but we can add to that if everybody else agrees).

Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
Also for the scoring, I think it should be either points or rotisserie. I don’t like head to head for hockey as games are sporatic, so you may have a team who may only have one game in a week, and your opponent may have 4, and they’ll win just beause they played more games. It doesn’t really even itself out at the end of the season in my eyes. H2H works great for football and baseball though.
Points and rotisserie will. I say everybody but myself vote either points or rotisserie (I won’t vote so there’s an odd number and no ties). Right now it’s at points but easily changed. We can still have playoffs in a points league (not sure about rotisserie).

Don’t worry, if somehow you end up with a player that you didn’t want, we can always change it after the draft no problem.
I wish I could rank my players now….. I think it’s going to be harder than I think since I have bias towards the Flyers and will have trouble narrowing them down. I mean Richards, Carter, Briere, Giroux, Pronger, Timonen will be hard enough, plus Zherdev, JVR, Leino will possibly have good fantasy seasons…. well we’ll see how it goes.

Well I guess you can just put him in the rankings, I mean he’s an RFA so he stays with the Ducks most likely (don’t know the rules). I’m waiting on Kovalchuk before I sign him since he’s a UFA and if they reject the deal again who knows where he ends up.
I am willing to bet that the minimum 3 Ducks you want are Perry, Getzlaf, and Ryan, right?
See, when I was trying to submit the autopick draft last night it was going to make me draft all 23 players to submit it. I wanted to just pick one and have us each finish ourselves, but ranking them will work very well. I can’t wait to rank my players.

Well at least with the Predators you get some good defenders.
The Blues, I don’t know whom they have anymore, except Halak. I am sure if I saw their roster I’d be like “oh yeah” but it shows how much I know about the Western Conference teams.

Thanks for that. I missed Ryan Suter at first. I had to readjust my whole strategy.
I’m going with 4 defenders from STL and NSH, allowing me to utilize the scoring touch of Chicago and Detroit a lot better. In other words, no Brian Campbell or Brian Rafalski for me. I need those spots for teams without solid forwards.
I’m pretty pumped for this exercise.

Hey all,
I forgot to post yesterday that I got all of my pre-draft rankings are all done.
Travis, are you finished with your rankings yet? If so I can set the draft status to “ready” whenever that happens and hopefully they’ll draft the league fast and we can make our edits.
Once the league is drafted I’ll see how the game caps work and apply those.

Yeah I think that’s what happened. I ranked extra players because I wasn’t counting, and after they were gone I got leftovers in the FA pool. Well Doughty and Brown were on Travis’s but I dropped all of our players from his team so we can fix our rosters, and he can just add whomever he wants whenever he can (no rush, league doesn’t start for a month).
I think we’re all set mostly. I’m still debating a few switches but I’ll research the rest of our division more and see who I think will have a better fantasy season.

Hi All:
I just wanted to figure out two things for the league.
1) I figured out the game cap system (finally!). I can pretty much only cap each position (I can’t separate Skaters and Goalies). So how many are we thinking for each position? I was thinking just make it the standard 82 since everybody will play 82 games, and we’ll end up with a lot of extra goalie games. If there’s a better idea let me know.
2) Scoring.
I can still change the scoring type. Points or Rotisserie? I want everybody to vote for which one they want and whichever has the most we’ll go with that. After we get that settled we’ll have to figure out stats (and point modifiers if it’ll be points), so once we decide what type of scoring we can change what stats we do.
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
Rotisserie would be a better fit for the style of the league I think.
Backing Backlund for 2010-2011

That’s what I’m thinking, but I want everybody else’s input on it before I change it.
What stat categories were you thinking?
#1 Flyers Fan in New York
Good bye #12, you will always bleed Orange and Black.
Rotisserie is fine with me.
I suggest for the skaters: Goals, Assists, +/-, PIM, PPPoints, SHPoints, GWGoals, FOWon, FOLost, Hits (I guess you could do Blocks, but i dont think it would benifits MOST of the Rosters, I dont think anyone is drafting ‘Lappy-Like’ players…LOL)
I would suggest for the Goalies: Wins, Losses, GAA, Saves, Save %, Shutouts
Cheers,

Ok I’ll wait to see what the other 3 think, but it seems that rotisserie will be the scoring. I think it will work nice with the type of league this is, but I’ll see what everybody else thinks before changing it.

or…IF we go with a Points League…
SKATERS:
Goals = 3
Assists = 2
Plus = 1
Minus = -1
PPPoint = 1
SHPoint = 2
GWGoal = 5
FOWon = 0.5
FOLost = -0.5
Hits = 1
Blocks = 1
GOALIES:
Wins = 3
Losses = -2
Saves = 0.5
Goals Against = -0.5
Shutout = 5
(We would have to lose the Save % category in a points league I think and Replace GAA with Goals Against)
In hind sight, I think the Points would work well too…So like a politician, I will change my vote to “Undecided” LOL!
I’m good with whatever the consensus is…
Cheers,

Lol I remember when I asked before and the consensus seemed to be either or would work, and since Todd and I seem to be leaning more towards rotisserie, it may end up being that. Unless I hear somebody say they only want points I’ll switch it. With my team leagues in baseball (each player has a team) the rotisserie works pretty well, so that’s why I’m leaning for that.
There may be a lot more stat categories to choose from when I switch it, so I’ll present those once we have the scoring settled.

Just looking at those categories, it’s going to be a long season for me. But they look good.

Well maybe not. For the Rotisserie I was thinking of somehow trying to make the stats even, so defensive teams like the Sabres and the Bruins can stay in the hunt. I’ll have a better picture once I can see what categories we can add, but I’m going to aim to see if there’s a way to benefit both offensive and defensive type teams.
Plus who knows, you may have some great fantasy seasons with your players. I think rotisserie may keep it closer than with points.

Honestly, I don’t really care about this guys… choose whatever you think is the best for our league and I’ll go with it :)

Ok, rotisserie it is! I’ll make the changes when I’m home and post the stat categories we can choose from. I would like to try to even it out so defensive and offensive divisions can be closer together. Any ideas let me know.

Hey no problem, I think we got everything fixed. It was just a minor inconvenience, we all got it fixed pretty quickly (would have been faster if I saw it earlier), and now it’s easy for you to add everybody for your team.
I can’t check the teams now (will have to wait until later tonight when I’m at home on a computer that doesn’t block Yahoo Fantasy sports). I’m sure yours is fine though.

You still need to drop Ryan Smyth.
And you don’t have any players from the Wild in your lineup (Koivu is on your bench), so that needs to change.
Other than that, you’re good.

Backstrom doesn’t count?
Made that change, and replaced Smyth with Latrendresse anyway.

We’re not counting goalies towards the team minimum in the league. We each should have one goalie from each team on our roster. The 3 player minimum rule applies to skaters, so all of us need at least 3 skaters (Forwards and Defensemen) from each of our division’s teams starting every night.

Ok, I am home now and changed the league to Rotisserie.
For the stat categories, here’s what we have to choose from:
Skaters:
Goals, Assists, Points, Plus/Minus, PIM, PP Goals, PP Assists, PP Points, SH Goals, SH Assists, SH Points, GW Goals, Shots on Goal, Shooting Percentage, FO Won, FO lost, Hits, Blocks
Goalies:
Games Started, Wins, Losses, Goals Against, Goals Against Average, Shots Against, Saves, Save Percentage, Shutouts
That’s all for stats. Let me know what you think we should have. I think what Fezzlekway said:
I suggest for the skaters: Goals, Assists, +/-, PIM, PPPoints, SHPoints, GWGoals, FOWon, FOLost, Hits (I guess you could do Blocks, but i dont think it would benifits MOST of the Rosters, I dont think anyone is drafting ‘Lappy-Like’ players…LOL)
I would suggest for the Goalies: Wins, Losses, GAA, Saves, Save %, Shutouts
Would be a good place to start.
I would add Shooting Percentage and Blocks to the skaters, and for Goalies i think it’s fine as it is.

Adding blocks would probably help bring up some scoring for the defensemen

Yeah I think so too, I’ll change the scoring for all of those and if anybody wants any categories to be added or dropped they should let me know so I can change it.
