NHL 11

The Flyers got hosed in the ratings in this game. I cant really describe it more than showing you the players overall ratings...

Richards has a solid 88 but the rest of our million centers got hosed with Carter 84, Giroux 82, and Briere at only an 85. Hartnell and JVR also have 82's to show how bad Giroux got it. Zherdev 81 and Carcillo 79 round out the top 9. The defense is horrible though. Pronger was a 92 last year, got 5th in the Norris voting and had an out o fthis world playoffs, and is an 87 this year. Timonen's 83 is pathetic. Even more pathetic is Coburn's 83. Meszaros was worse with an 82 and Carle is our 5th best defensemen at an 81.

The game is amazing and its one month until the regular season begins... Its been dead here, just trying to pick it up a little bit.

I’ve played 5 or 6 games so far and I’ve only scored twice. I must suck really bad. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong though. I was pretty good at NHL 10. I don’t know what happened. As for the ratings, that’s straight up ridiculous. Taking Pronger 5 down in just one year? That’s insane. Oh and were there roster updates? Because I still have Gags and Asham on my team (The weird thing is that Asham is 54 instead of 45. Is that his number in Pittsburgh?) and I don’t have Zherdev or Shelley or some of the other new acquisitions. I haven’t downloaded a software update on my PS3 that won’t let me get onto the internet otherwise yet so I don’t know if they changed the rosters around or not.

Just to put it in perspective … I have scored 6 goals in the EAUHL with a REAL crap team and I have scored 2 goal in my first two NHL games on my Be A Pro who is rated at 74.

What do you do to score man? Is it about position? Aiming? I just can’t get it. I suck a lot at aiming and I even switched to computer assisted aiming (I can’t believe I sank that low either) but it just didn’t seem to help. I can’t really figure out where I need to aim and how I should move the stick to get it there. Maybe I’m just hopeless.

by craigg747 on Sep 8, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If you’ve got it on 360 you could send the game to me and I’ll tell you if it’s faulty.

Alternatively, I find flicking the right stick rather than full on jamming it to be better for scoring goals, at least in 09 and 10.

In a season game … I shoot a lot. Sometimes the puck will just get past the goalie. Mostly though it is a one time pass and score, but you have to change it up all the time or the computer learns you are going to pass and pick it off. I’m not always trying to score on the perfect play.

In Be A Player … I just try to aim where the goalie isn’t. Doesn’t always work with a player rated 74 and a refusal to buy upgrade with my hard earned money. The only two goals my guy has scored have been off a shot 6 inches from the goal line and and a deflection (OT GAME WINNER!!!). I am quickly becoming a pro at the deek to the backhand, beat the goalie, and hit the goal post move though.

Honestly I spent about 15 minutes looking for the update roster function but couldn’t locate it last night. I found the load roster function, which was normally grouped with download roster but that’s it.

There was a game update at start but it didn’t seem to affect roster since I also see Gagne and Asham as stated above. Any ideas on roster updates are welcome.

by srv1084 on Sep 8, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

It is 3 menus deep. You go to Online … then to I think the last option of in that menu … then you should see Roster Updates. But FYI as of maybe 7:00 last night there weren’t any.

by ic0n67 on Sep 8, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks. As soon as you said Online i remembered that’s where it was. The delay in roster updates is and has been my biggest complaint. If I remember, NHL 10 waited until just about the beginning of the season to release one. I am assuming to capture as many changes as possible. It makes sense but I’m just impatient.

by srv1084 on Sep 8, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I went and played an online game yesterday (got beaten, no surprise there) and it told me there was a new roster update. I downloaded it and it put the new players in and took the old ones out. Basically it was just switching Gagne with Zherdev and Asham with Carcillo. I haven’t played a game after that though offline or online, so I don’t know if it sticks with that roster or not.

by craigg747 on Sep 9, 2010 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the info. I’ll have to try that and probably take a beatin’ as well. As of last night there were no roster updates for download.

Is Pronger’s 88 all that bad? Keith and Chara and Lidstrom’s are 85-86, correct?

I don’t know, let me see if it’s posted online. I just know from the NHL11 demo HUT mode what Keith and Chara and Lidstrom are rated. I guess they decreased the margin between best and worst guys—in NHL09 (the last game I got, skipped NHL10), there were lots of NHLers in the low 70 if not 60s. I don’t think that’s here anymore, which kind of makes sense. The margin between NHLers (especially goalies) isn’t huge season-to-season (consistency IMO is the true hallmark of a terrific player).

I can’t find anything definite, but it looks like in NHL10 they shifted all the player ratings down some (like Crosby from 96 to 92 or something, etc).

Be A Pro

Did they change up Be A Pro this year?

NHL ’10 was my first time playing since I think ’06 so the Be A Pro was new to me last year. I know they changed it now that instead of playing in the Prospects Game and getting drafted you now play is the CHL for the Memorial Cup (unless it matters on what team you pick) then get drafted from that. And you play in the preseason to see if you make the team.

But then that is where I don’t know what changed: Because I made the team on my first try. It took me 7 Pros to make an NHL team in NHL’10, this time on my first. Also I’m on the first line. I know last year they started you on the 3rd line and slowly you worked your way up. I am just wondering if they start you on the first this year and you work your way down if you suck.

by ic0n67 on Sep 8, 2010 8:37 AM EDT reply actions

Doesn’t look like much has changed.

I made the team on my first try last night. They put me on the 3rd line though.

Surprisingly EA does a very good job at laying out the rating for NHL teams. They really don’t miss the mark too often with things like this. Honestly those numbers do not look too bad at all. van Reimsdyke is a little too high imo, but just what you posted I don’t see anything to cry foul about.

Richards is a very solid player and best forward on this team. He isn’t a superstar by any stretch on the fanboi rack and doesn’t warrant something in the 90s.

Briere and Carter are about equal. I mean I might have expected their scores to be the other way, but considering Briere stepped up last season and Carter stepped down the scores look good.

Giroux at 82 … okay. He is about on par with what Hartnell should be. Maybe even a little lower in the grand scheme of life at this point.

Saying the defense is horrible though … I speak of last year’s numbers here, but I found that on most teams with pretty good defense that their best D-man was usually around the 82-80 range. I assume that would still hold true although I have no done Be A GM and looked through the league ratings yet (kinda waiting until the official rosters are out for the season). If the above holds true what EA is saying is the Flyers have 5 Defensemen that could be a #1 on another team, that is saying something.

by ic0n67 on Sep 8, 2010 8:52 AM EDT reply actions

Dunno, I was looking at some of the ratings for the players and found myself questioning some things. Specifically, Carter had a wrist-shot-power rating of 85, which was fairly average. I would think the ratings folks would do so homework and realize that Carter probably has one of the best wrist shots in the league, yet guys like Malkin and Crosby were both rated higher.

by Phalange on Sep 8, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

My beef with the ratings was not what they were rated, it was the order of who was better than who. Giroux=JVR=Hartnell? Maybe. Coburn = Timonen??? No way. Coburn > Meszaros? Maybe. Coburn > Carle… Ehhh.

by orangeandblack20 on Sep 8, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with this completely. If they just took everyone down a little bit, I can understand that. But they screwed up the order of who’s better than who pretty bad.

by craigg747 on Sep 8, 2010 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok maybe not “pretty bad” but there’s still some problems in there.

by craigg747 on Sep 8, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I suspect that Pronger’s loss of ratings points has something to do with the new physics engine? Maybe because of their crappy animation based physics last year Prongs had to be that high so that he would actually hit people when he threw a check. This year, he can make contact in almost any way and still take a guy out? Anyone think this theory might be a little correct?

I don’t have the game yet. I have to wait for my b-day…a whole week from yesterday, to get it. Sigh…

When I do get it I have PS3 and my name is the same as my name here, friend me and we should play online!

Did they fix players name pronunciations from the demo (and the previous 20 years)?

So tired of Ger-O and Pow-E, haha

by grucifer on Sep 9, 2010 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

I think it is tongue-and-cheek and they do it on purpose. Gary Thorn (the play by play guy) is notorious for mispronouncing names. The Ger-O one is a great example I can remember from ’10 where he would call Claude Giroux by Ger-O 49 times out of 50 … but there was always one time every once in a while where he would say Giroux correctly. I think it is all by design.

Passing

Okay …

Is it just me or has the pass gotten extremely BAD. It seems no matter what all the passes I make are either going to the absolute wrong people (or no one at all if I’m lucky) or the pass is feathered with ginger composure that a sheet of paper could stop the puck dead.

There are plenty of times where I will have a guy wide open at the side of the net and I try to pass it to him, I hit the pass button with the analogue stick firmly pointed in direction of said player and all of a sudden the pass goes back to the guy in the high slot with 4 opposing player surrounding him.

Maybe just maybe those are my problems and i just suck, but the computer is not much better. Passes are picked off really easy when the computer passes them too. There are times when I am looking for an outlet pass from my D and the pass is 10 feet away from my outstretched stick.

But my FAVORITE is when I have a step behind the D and have a wide open break away. I will literally be standing on the center ice dot with skating at a 45 degree towards the open right wing. Only to have my D man pass the puck inches away from the body of the opposing player our blue line for a simple pick. Instead of passing it either where I am or where I am going or where I could be the D passes it where I was … before I even called for the pass.

So frustrating ….

by ic0n67 on Sep 9, 2010 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

I didn’t know if it was bad or just more difficult or I just sucked. I also find myself passing too hard since the saucer pass has it’s own button in ’11. In ’10 you just held the pass button longer for a saucer pass

by srv1084 on Sep 9, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Hold the pass button for harder passes. You might want to turn down the pass assist slider too (I think it exists) so you have more control over pass aim.

You know, I haven’t thought of that. I didn’t get NHL11—I played Be a Pro in NHL09, in which we don’t have that pressure-sensitive passing—and its demo doesn’t have Be a Pro.

Yeah, I started as the Aves, and they took Craig Anderson and a 28 year old forward who was only ranked a 72 for 2011 1st, 2011 2nd, and 2012 2nd. I happily obliged, now have Razor on my team. (I will add that I did take a goalie with one of my picks too).

this game is def good and has a lot of positives, but there are also some negatives. the new physics engine is a step in the right direction. the graphics on some faces is amazing.

some things i dont like are the passing and puck control. the passing because although in theory it sounds good, they need to tone down the variation between hard and soft pass. another thing is that although the ai has improved tremendously, there are some glitches. sometimes when a pass is going past a players stick, they dont even react to it. im not even talking about a hard pass, but a perfect pass in the right direction or a stagnant puck and the player doesnt put his stick on it.

the ratings are def spread out over a smaller spectrum now. so it seems like the average player is an 81. but some of the ratings are horrible. kimmo is an 83? while mike green is an 85 i think. are you kidding? and he is the same as coburn? i was so frustrated when i saw this. another bad one is carter who should at least, the very least be an 85. the best defenses in the league hold an 86 rating. so the flyers have that, pitts, etc. but dallas is one i can remember and many others have 86s as well. the capitals are a fucking 85???? ahhhhhhh

by phinally on Sep 10, 2010 1:53 AM EDT reply actions

So I decided to start my GM career this year with the Avs. I like the fact that they have young talent and I always like teams where I bring up my own goalie who I draft(read above.) but with my first pick I had, I took this Garbov guy. So I put him in the minors where he does great and has 36 goals and 30 assist. The team I had was kinda crappy, so I left him in the minors another year(he was only ranked a 72 anyway), and he scores 64 goals and has 49 assist, giving him 113 pts, or, 26 more pts then the next highest person in the minors that year. needless to say this guy is now my top line LW and is an absolute best.

As I digress, I do want to make a point that it takes a lot longer for players to develop now. Not that this is that bad(more like how the NHL used to be), but I drafted a guy #8, he has a potential of B, was ranked a 62. But the system put him in juniors instead of my AHL team, and after a year, hes only a 64, and still cant play AHL. The guy is gonna be like 25 before he even hits the 80 mark, so instead of little development in juniors, i put him as my #6 d-man, which kinda sucks when Emery is my goalie with a rookie as a backup.

i find the Hockey Ultimate Team to be quite addicting. Tho, I played my first online game with ‘my’ player and got a goal. I need to find out what stats do what for your player because in NHL 10, a few stats did absolutely nothing for your player if you were using him for online.

Philadelphia Flyers/Columbus Blue Jackets...don't ask me how.

by PhillyPhan85 on Sep 10, 2010 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

I get frustrated with playing online. Because all it is is some guy on the other side constantly changing playing to try to lift your stick … like none fucking stop. You get around one and then they have another and then another then at that point you have to deal with the first person again. It really pisses me off … especially whenever I try to lift someones stick I get a penalty. I played a game last nigth and all 5 of my penaties came on the 5 times i tried to life to stick … my opponent got none the entire game. And then I love it when the assholes trash talk you when they can’t play anything that even remotely looks like how you should be playing the game.
