The article about potential trades lists some interesting possibilities:
John Madden ($1.25M)
Marty Reasoner ($1.15M)
Brendan Morrison ($725K)
Zenon Konopka ($600k)
Curtis Glencross ($1.2M)
Alex Tanguay ($1.7M)
Andrew Brunette ($2.33M)
I like the idea of the Flyers bring in a guy like John Madden to kill penalties. Curtis Glencross wouldn’t be a bad option either. But, I think I am still in favor of the Flyers sitting still at the deadline and not make any moves. No use fixing what ain’t broke. The only thing I wouldn’t mind would be Zherdev being moved for draft picks to a Western Conference bubble team.

Meh, I don’t want to get rid of Z, personally I’d rather upgrade Nodl on Richards line, and drop Nodl to the 4th line and put Shelley in a suit. That kind of line up screams deep run to me.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?
I don’t want to get rid of Z I just want to get something for him. I am assuming he isn’t going to be a Flyer next season so I want to turn him into draft picks from a bubble team. He is just too valuable not to dangle and see if Flyers can hose another team.
But, a Stanley Cup is more important and having depth is crucial to winning a Stanley Cup so keeping Z really might be the wiser move…

We agreed to that. 100% Do you like Tanguay as that LW another guy who might due too much with the puck.
I may be the minority, but I love Zherdev. He’s had his lapses, but I would love to see what he does with another year of chemistry with this team. Some steady playing time with the same guys, and I think he would be a huge asset. This may not be financially do-able, but it’s something I’d like to see. I’m not ready to give up on him yet…..
I'm kind of a dick.
I’d like to have him back but it be tough to do from a cap position (depending on who you value as more important), and I think Lavy has guaranteed that Z won’t want to come back here any way.
Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!

I am actually with you Van. I like Z. I think he has incredible talent and drool thinking about what he could do one a line with chemistry. Just look at Briere. He is not that much different than Z. Briere is poor defensively but an awesome offensive talent. Give linemates that compliment him and let him do what he does best, Briere is shining. I fully believe Z could do the same thing.
But, as Don said, Lavy has pretty much guaranteed that Z won’t be a Flyer next year. Because of this, I am not giving up on Z. Lavy has so we might as well get some draft picks or something out of him before he signs with another team (NHL or KHL) for free.

Briere seems to be doing better defensively this year.
I know plus/minus is not a great stat, but here you go anyway.
During his best year with Buffalo (2006-07) – 95 points, plus-17.
Compare this to 2007-08 – 72 points, minus-22.
So far this year – 41 points, plus-16. He’s roughly on pace for an 80-point, plus-29 season.
Assuming he achieves those totals, we’d have to give some credit to the defense and goaltending of the team for the improved plus/minus. Even so, I will say that watching him this year, I’m not AS uncomfortable as I used to be when he’s in his own end of the ice.

They go through stretches of being trapped in their own end, and they don’t seem to be giving up tons of goals.

Well, no Flyer has been on the ice for more 5-on-5 goals against than Briere.
In terms of per 60, Briere gives up the 4th most, ahead of Giroux, Powe, and Carcillo, all of whom have received worse on-ice save percentages.
Briere is on the ice for 4.32 goals/60 minutes. Last year, that was “only” 2.84.
Yes, his GAON/60 is down from 2.72 to 2.41, but he was tied for worst last year, and he’s 4th-worst this year. So if you think he’s slightly better, he is. But so is the team, so unless Briere suddenly is better defensively than two of the top-four PKers, he’s just as bad defensively as he was last year. You just don’t notice it because he’s in the offensive zone so often.

Ya that is a good point. A LOT of credit needs to be given to the awesome defense and goal tending we have been been getting all year, but I think a lot of it has to do with how dominant that line has been. Over in the recap of the game last night’s game on Japers’, they mentioned said this:
One of the more frustrating things about the Caps lately (read: all season long) is their continued inability to cycle the puck in the offensive zone – something that was brought into stark relief when compared to Philly’s dominant forechecking ability. To watch the Flyers maintain possession in the Caps’ zone, particularly in the second, was to have flashbacks of what this Washington team used to be capable of.I think the HBL line is really the one that deserves most of this credit. They spend so much time cycling in the offensive end, the opposition’s chances of scoring are so infrequent because they can’t clear the puck while HBL is forechecking. Thus, helping to explain why Danny Briere’s plus-minus is on pace for a career high.

Exactly.
Seeing as how Briere still has the third-highest GAON/60 on the entire team – despite getting sheltered in the offensive zone, against 3rd line competition, with first line teammates, winning the Corsi battle, and getting team average goaltending – I think it’s safe to say he’s still the same old defensive sieve.

The assumption doesn’t make sense to target a center, but I agree Madden, Reasoner, Morrison, and Konopka (or, best of all, McClemant, since we are going for pipe-dream 4th line center when we already have one). Meanwhile, Glencross, Tanguay, and Brunette are all better than people we would be free to give up.
I wouldn’t mind replacing someone like Shelley, directly or indirectly, with one of those guys. But I certainly wouldn’t want to get rid of anyone in our top nine right now. If you’re worried about next year and the franchises future then what you keep reiterating about Zherdev makes sense. If you want a better chance at the cup this year, then it is nonsensical.
I like most people thought the All-star game would be Crosby vs Ovechkin but once I read who they picked I was not surprised either. Home town captain vs one of the greatest defenseman of all time who might be playing his last year. I’m also glad for these captians cause I’ve already had my fill of Crosby and Ovechkin during the Winter Classic.

Places to eat near the WFC?
I’m heading up to Philly with my family for tomorrow night’s game against the Senators (Latvian Hockey Night at the WFC!). Anyway, since I haven’t lived in Philly for a long time, and since the WFC doesn’t open doors until an hour before game time, I was wondering if there are any family-friendly places not too far away to grab some food before the game? We may arrive in the area between 4-5PM. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
Sarauj, Latvija!
The doors open 90 minutes before the game. And what kind of food are you looking for, there are a million good Italian restaurants in South Philly.

Thanks. My kids are 5 and 9, so nothing too fancy. A place where we could pizza and/or sandwiches would be great.

I always go to our opposing teams blogs to read their recaps, and it’s amazing the difference in some fan-bases. Over at Japer’s, they seem really knowledgable, and give credit where credit is due. Maybe it’s the division rivalries, but anytime I go to Blueshirt, or ILWT, etc, it’s immediately about Philthydelphia, the Bullies, our fanbase being illiterate and all that……

Well, I’ll tease the Caps fans occasionally (like my joke about not knowing who Dale Hunter is), but I recognize that every team does have its die-hard base. I’ve just been arguing for three years here and elsewhere that it’s not good for the long-term health of the league when the top five focuses for the NHL’s ads are Crosby, Crosby, Ovechkin, Crosby, and the NHL. You guys over at Japers’? Yeah, you’re not the guys I’m aiming the Dale Hunter crack at. The family from that godawful screaming kids commercial? They’re in my target demographic ;)

Agreed. Who would have thought that signing a contract with OLN six years ago could have ended up putting us in such a good position?
As for the lockouts, I’d rather our sport gain popularity by its own merits rather than by the absence of other sports, but I’ll take what I can get. Our drop in popularity was caused by a lockout, so I guess it’s fitting in some way. But I won’t hold my breath on any of that anyway.
It’ll sure be interesting to see what happens. Be sure to keep an eye on 30 Rock for any developments on the NBC/Cabletown, er, I mean NBC/Comcast merger, since they seem to be ahead of the situation over the news media.

He was under 85% in the Boston game the other day. And it wasn’t a start, but saving 18/22 in the 8-7 Lightning game was a really bad relief performance.
Plus, he let in four goals a couple of other times, and we all know that four goals = bad game.
I found myself reading this one today. It cracked me up when he got this comment:
If you’re going to make that argument against Osgood, you have to make the same arguments against Broduer, who has played in the most goalie friendly system in the NHL for the past 15 years, and nobody is arguing he doesn’t belong.

The question is if this will make beer at games cheaper or not? I’m guessing no, but according to the article it reduces spills (which saves money) and it cuts down on the line, which means more beers are sold and more money is made. The only extra costs are the cups, but it also said that they provide other advertising opportunities that can even increase profits even more.
So it SHOULD, in theory, make beer cheaper at the stadium. It won’t.

My guess would be that the price of the system at least outweighs the losses from spills, so the cost-per-beer for the vendor wouldn’t be any lower.
The vendor should be able to sell more beers, so in theory they could drop the price a little and make up for it with volume. But there’s no competition in the stadium, so there’s no reason for them to do that.
They’ll keep the cost where it is, sell more beers, and make more money. But you still benefit, because you get back to your seat quicker.
