Off-Topic Thread Part 4: Goodenough for Larry

OK, gang. Since Kreeeeder's OT fanpost has dropped off The List on the right, even though I tried to bump it up this morning with a rec, I think it's time for a new thread devoted to the random stuff that doesn't really belong in hockey-related threads (but will wind up there anyway ). Talk about whatever you want, just keep it civil and respectful of one another (unless it's a "Geoff's a slut" joke, those are always funny). We've got Oscars coming up, an allegedly Super Bowl game, lovely weather (y'all get snow - I get tornadoes), and all sorts of other shenanigans. Again, talk about whatever, just keep it respectful if you disagree on something, because we all agree on what really matters - our beloved Flyers.

Went to Brauhaus Schmitz before the last game I went to (Caps OT win) and that place is just sick for a beer snob like myself.

I highly recommend it.

I bought a 6 pack of Weihenstephaner tonight. Has anyone ever had it before?

On another beer related note, my new favorite beer is Castle in South Africa. If you ever have the chance to visit South Africa, I highly recommend it!!

What beer from Weihenstephaner? I’m not a huge German beer fan personally, though I do love most alt beer from Dusseldorf.

I don’t know exactly what was spoiled for you but even the “ending” doesn’t really ruing the rest of the show. If you have time you should watch them, it’s still a lot of fantastic television in there.

It’s not worth 82 hours of my if I already know what happens to them. It’s like knowing the killer in a who- dunnit. No puzzle, no antcipation. Or watching a Flyers or Phillies game if you already know who won. I love Roy Halladay’s perfect game but I’m not gonna watch it again unless I’m analyzing it for some reason. I find it hard to make the emotional investment in a TV seiral show character in if know their fate esp. when there overtones of paranormal mystery and alternative realitiness to it. The show is premised on figuring exactly wtf happened to them, it’s a vital narrative thread. The fun of this type of serial TV show is not knowing what’s around the bend. The Potato Chip factor….just can’t eat one, just can’t watch one. That’s gone now. That’s 82 hours of less fun than what I coulda had.

Even if I find out who won in a Flyers game I still will watch to see who did what.

I didn’t want to say cause I wouldn’t want the same thing to happen to someone else. I think if it weren’t for the paranormalish stuff I could deal but it just created such a compelling mystery. Let’s put it this way when I was watching it the thought did cross my mind as a possiblity but they kept throwing me enough curveballs to keep me off the scent. I need a MIB "Lost " wipe.

Holy shit, Fernando Torres’ agent just said that by Monday night, Torres will be a Chelsea player.

I am excited as a Chelsea fan, but kind of wary because him and Didier Drogba are close to the same player (though Torres is 6 years younger) and Chelsea need a centerback more than they need a striker like Torres.

Rant time

I am literally sick of the snow this year. I sort of wish it could be like last year where we had those big storms in February and that was it. This year, it seems like another inch or two falls every other day. I don’t mind the snow, per se, but when it is snowing so frequently, it just becomes a general nuisance that becomes tiresome real quick. I don’t know what Philly got today. I’m at college in the Middle Of Nowhere, PA and it snowed all day (trust me, I was up at 7:23 this morning, it snowed non-stop from then til sunset) and it got 2 inches. Which does not snow you in, but provides an utter annoyance to anyone trying to go outside.

And now it looks like this storm coming on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday is going to completely wallop us. I don’t know the Philadelphia forecast, but preliminary forecasts I think are having my section of the northeast as getting pounded the hardest. Fucking make it stop. I don’t mind the cold, I actually quite like it, but I’m coming to the point where I would give up my first born* just for one 60 degree day.

*This may or may not be a gross exaggeration

I feel your pain. On Wednesday, the snow where I am in Central NJ started in the morning. It wasn’t supposed to start (or at least get heavy) until the afternoon at the earliest, according to the weather.com prediction I had looked at. I, expecting to be back in my room by then, opened the door of my townhouse, ready to leave for my research lab and saw snow coming down. Had to run back to my room upstairs and put on my boots, then walk across campus in the snow. Not pleasant at all. And I was wearing my glasses (not contacts) so I had to keep my head down to prevent them from getting coated!

Then of course, my school finally calls a dismissal. Which was for 1:30. And didn’t apply to me at all, so back I trudged to my dorm. Then comes the rest of the storm. Snow, AND thunder and lightning. I could easily tell, looking out my window, that it was not going to stop for a while and that it would be impossible for most off campus students and pretty much all professors to get here even though a lot are in the area. I even saw a plow get caught in the snow, having to back up and try again to get over it. The pathways were coated again barely 30 minutes after they were plowed. I was supposed to have an 8 AM class. Walking in that was not going to be fun, but of course no snow day called until 5:30 AM. And then I got to walk in more snow on Friday when I got out of class. One of my important clubs has not been able to have a meeting yet because we keep getting snowed out. And we probably will this week too.

Snow is fun once. And then it just gets frustrating.

I’m tired of the snow too. I travelled to South Africa for 3 weeks in January, so I was in the summer time (90-100 degrees out) and then I come home to this. I couldn’t believe how much snow had fallen in 3 weeks. Back at school, in CT, it’s a pain because there is no more room for the snow so the parking lots are tiny and it’s hard to find a parking spot for class. Also, the Wednesday snow, I didn’t realize it was going to start so early and the roads were horrible driving to campus. Campus closed at 5pm, and driving home, the roads were pavement and I wasn’t risking my life. We had a snow day on Thursday and it will be interesting to see what happens this week.

I enjoy the freshly fallen snow, but after 4 feet of snow, it’s annoying.

by JLS89 on Jan 30, 2011 8:52 AM EST up reply actions

I know what you mean about Wednesday, when I went to bed late Tuesday night it was supposed to be rain Wednesday during the day then not be snow until nighttime. I woke up and there was already 2 inches on the ground (I work about half an hour south of you). Then the weather channel kept telling me it had already changed over to rain, so for two hours it said on the TV and Computer “Currently: Light Rain” when it was still snowing and still accumulating as I looked out my window.

A drop bear (or dropbear) is a fictitious Australian marsupial.1 Drop bears are commonly said to be unusually large, vicious, carnivorous koalas that inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping onto their heads from above.2 They are an example of local lore intended to frighten and confuse outsiders and amuse locals, similar to the jackalope, hoop snake, wild haggis, or snipe hunt.

It is often suggested that doing ridiculous things like having forks in the hair or Vegemite or toothpaste spread behind the ears will deter the creatures.

Well, that’s pretty much the greatest thing I’ve ever read. I’m going to go put forks in my hair and Vegemite behind my ears to protect me now.

I listen to the B.S. Report by Bill Simmons and he talked with LZ Granderson about sexual orientation in sports. The podcast is from Jan 11, but I’m still catching up on them since I was in Africa.

I thought that it was interesting that Bill Simmons just talked about this issue a few weeks before the Briere-Giroux articles and our discussion about their sexual orientation earlier this week.

Actually, another post: What’s a good site for a blog? I know there’s wordpress and livejournal, but what sites have people used and what do they recommend?

It’s not a specifically sports related blog, but I would possibly post Flyers related stuff occasionally.

I was thinking of one of my favorite Doctor Who quotes and realized it would make a good blog title/inspiring quote.

I’ve heard that Wordpress is simple and easy to use. There’s a blogging class at my school and they set up Wordpress accounts. It’s a lesser known site, but weebly is simple too! That’s the extent of my internet/blog knowledge, so I hope it helps!

Blogger and Wordpress are the two best. If you are familiarity with HTML, I recommend WordPress. If you have a novice, Blogger is simpler, in my opinion.

If you want to post Philadelphia Flyer fanfics, then livejournal is the choice for you.

There are basically two Lancasters. 1) Lancaster County which is all the amish and the sprawling farms and such and 2) Lancaster City which is a city and the 8th biggest city in PA.

Whenever someone mentions Lancaster they think of #1 usually because that’s what the Amish country is and that’s all people know. My friends in college came to my house once (they were from Skyulkill county) and literally feared for their safety (which was hilarious and unnecessary) and were amazed by how there’s actually city stuff down here.

Still a city, some places are called cities but they are super small. Brantford Ontario is a city but its super small. Wayne Gretzky Blvd is a 4 lane major road but the rest of the “City” is super small. If it wasnt for Wayne Gretzky, Chris Gratton and Keith Jones, Brantford would probably still be a undeveloped farm field.

Lancaster may be small but its probably as big as Wilmington Delaware or Erie PA

Erie is twice the size of Lancaster city, and Wilmington is about 25K larger. However, Lancaster’s metropolitan area is just a shade smaller than Harrisburg’s, and far, far larger than Erie’s. But Wilmington, while it doesn’t have a huge number of residents, most resembles a stereotypical city in my mind. It’s probably all those corporations that love the friendly Delaware tax laws.

And for Geoff, Montgomeryville can’t be anywhere near #9. It’s gotta be behind (in no particular order) Altoona, Harrisburg, York, Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport, etc. Those are all definitely bigger than Montgomeryville.

It’s all contained within the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which was what Disney called the land once they acquired it from their various shell corporations they used to secretly acquire the land. The two towns have a combined population of 39.

Well, Orlando proper’s only about 280,000, but the Metro area’s 2.5 million. The city’s just very narrowly defined – maybe half of one county is the actual city.

Bob.

by The Dark on Feb 10, 2011 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

True. But if we allow metro areas into the conversation, other metro areas bigger than Orlando that don’t have teams suddenly become relevant to this “big city” discussion.

by DragonGirl0583 on Feb 10, 2011 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

True. I guess it’s a matter of population and how the city defines itself. Florida’s weird because every little municipality is incorporated separately. Just in Orange County, you have:
City of Orlando
City of Apopka
City of Belle Isle
City of Edgewood
City of Maitland
City of Ocoee
City of Winter Garden
City of Winter Park

That’s eight legally-recognized cities in Orange County alone. All of Pennsylvania has fifty-seven cities. The lesser cities in Orange County range from Oakland’s 1100 people to Apopka’s 50,000+, but that’s a large part of why Orlando’s so small – it’s entirely contained within a single county, and shares that county with a large number of other incorporated municipalities. My personal opinion is that Orlando is a medium city, but large parts of what I consider Orlando are legally not Orlando.

Bob.

by The Dark on Feb 11, 2011 8:01 AM EST up reply actions

That still makes the Orlando metro roughly the size of Pittsburgh.

Population-wise, Orlando’s about 75% the population of Pittsburgh (236,000 to 312,000). Land-wise, it’s almost twice as big (151 square kilometers for Pittsburgh, 261 square kilometers for Orlando).

For metro areas, Greater Orlando is 10,390 square kilometers, about 2.1 million people. The Pittsburgh metro area is 14,779 square kilometers and 2.35 million people.

Way, way, way OT but important

If you are goofing off right now, I especially encourage those of you who are younger to watch CNN or your other favorite news channel as they show the reactions in Tahrir Square to Mubaruk’s resignation. I think this is the perhaps the most important world event we’ve seen since 9/11 or maybe even the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. In any case, you ought to watch at least for a little while, since we are going to see significant change from here. Positive (like the fall of the Wall) or negative (like 9/11) isn’t quite clear until we see what the results are from the Muslim Brotherhood, Saudi Arabia, etc.

We live in interesting times.

It will be interesting to see who takes over – there hasn’t been any real leadership within the anti-Mubarak movement. I’m hopeful that elBaradai will play a role in the new government, but at this point all we really know is that the military has withdrawn support from the Mubarak regime. That’s not necessarily an omen of democracy.

Bob.

by The Dark on Feb 11, 2011 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

Tiananmen Square says different. If Mubarak wasn’t 81 which I’d didn’t realize, I’m sure this would have gotten ugly. It was the smart play made by an old man who has amassed quite a personal fortune. With dissent in the military, he’d of spent his last days as either a puppet or ruling under constant threat of death which for someone who survived 6 assassination attempts would be nothing new, except now he wouldn’t have the same protection. Most of his military connections from his days as the Air Chief Marshal of the Egyptian Air Force and those who probably remained loyal to him from the October War in ‘73 are either dead or retired. And there’s no real ideology that guided the regime so there’s no real “greater good/ worldview” cause worth defending. This way he saves a little face, can’t be tired for any crimes against humanity (at least in this instance) and helps protect any family and friends. In retrospect this seems much more about the regime and it’s cronies buying time to get their proverbial houses in order so they could leave with a nice golden parachute to ease the pain of losing power as well as avoid prosecution for their corruption. Still, cynicism aside, an asshole being shone the door is a good thing. The dude was such party furniture. Not to discredit the protesters either, if they didn’t take a stand nothing changes and also their bravery warrants high praise once you consider the fucking tanks on the street and that political dissenters in Egyptian prisons suffered routine torture under Mubarak’s rule. In stituations like this, most political takeovers that usually occur peacefully or with little bloodshed do so when complex factors that the dissenters play little part in creating are what really weaken the positon of those in power.

by j reed on Feb 12, 2011 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Nice analysis jr. I concur.

But the lack of ideology also makes the next few months really dangerous and “in play”.

Instrumental piece.
A song with Brent Smith of Shinedown. (because of some record label controversy that is well over my head, this version of the song could not be played on American airwaves; the version of this song you hear on the radio features Doug Robb of Hobbastank; suffice to say, the version I linked to is much better)
Another instrumental.
A song featuring Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace.
A song featuring Corey Taylor of Slipknot/Stone Sour
And lastly, another instrumental..

They have so much more and have done numerous instrumental covers of Metallica and they have teamed up with Lacey Mosley of Flyleaf and Gavin Rossdale of Bush on songs. This kind of music is right up my alley, so I love it. ;-)

Thanks, I enjoyed these selections, in particular the instrumental pieces. Very inventive- they really found sounds in those stringed instruments I hadn’t heard before. Very gothic – emotional, dark and theactrical. I included some some links to some music I think you might appreciate. The stuff from Nyman and the Rachael’s are more in the modern classical tradition whereas the Dirty Three, a fiddle/guitar/drums ensemble explore more folk sounds. The last 3 are from different types of what’s considered goth or typically associated with goth back in my day. Italy’s Paul Chain represents the goth metal traditon whose earlier work no doubt influenced today’s goth metal acts like fellow Italians Lacuna Coil (the 4th band). Bands like Britian’s Sisters of Mercy came more from the industrial camp with an emphasis on driving, faster monotonous tempos. Joy Division who your probably familiar with or at least heard of are considered one the seminal goth bands however their sound is more similar in approach and structure to fellow British punks bands like the Buzzcocks and the Damned.

Michael Nyman – from String Quartet No. 2. The only version I could find of this was from this ballet production. The section of the piece starts at about 1:20 into the video.
Michael Nyman & Balanescu QuartetString Quartet No. 3 Beginning
The Dirty ThreeBetter Go Home Now, Horse
Rachel’sWater From The Same Source, Promenade, Cypress Branches, Rhine and Courtesan
Lacuna Coil – Italian Goth Metal. Heavens a Lie, Swamped
Paul Chain – Italian Doom Metal. Okay so some of the lyrics are in English, some Italian and some are complete nonsense – literally, as in the dude made up his own words. He’s an odd duck in the metal world but a pioneer in the doom/goth metal sound. Living Today, Roses of Winter – Very Sabbath. Three Water - Complete with video clips from some cheesy 70’s Italian horror movie! Violence of the Sun
Sisters of Mercy – classic British goth. Takes more from industrial music, very club friendly. Ribbons, Alice, Lucretia My Reflection
Joy Division – When I was younger this was the default “goth” band but they were so much more than that. I can’t stress enough how important their 1979 release Unknown Pleasures is to the “alternative” genre. It’s a masterpiece. The first 2 songs are from it, the 3d from Closer (1980). Day of the Lords, New Dawn Fades, 24 Hours

I was not expecting to beat Pittsburgh so the mere loss does not sting, what stings about this one is that Pittsburgh decided to hand this game on a silver platter. Villanova promptly took that silver platter and tossed it right in the dumpster. And as _TheDream pointed out in The Nova Blog recap, the crowd was an embarrassment. When Dan Shulman, Jay Bilas, AND Erin Andrews are all calling you out on national TV, you know it’s bad. If the New Jersey Devils crowd ever went to a basketball game, the result would be the crowd we got tonight in The Pavilion. Embarrassing.
