Unless you’re talking about politics, your headline has me so charmingly befuddled.

I think he’s referring to the fact that the last time we won in Detroit before yesterday, Reagan was in office.

Yeah we need a new episode so we can talk about trading one of our goalies to the Avs for someone

by Zachswider on Jan 3, 2011 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

You mean a draft pick? Do the Avs need a goalie?

My sense is that the Flyers are going to wait until a) Leighton gets more games in and b) someone needs a goalie. Someone will likely have a goalie injury and need assistance. Hopefully that team has the necessary cap space to take on Leighton’s contract. Either that, or they have cap space due to LTIR.

Now, before all of the Leighton defenders jump on me, here’s why he’s the odd man out:

1. Boucher is playing phenomenally, and has been a good mentor for Bob.
2. Bob isn’t going anywhere.

And the Flyers will likely wait until someone has injury trouble before moving Leighton because the other team will need goaltending help and hopefully won’t be as choosy. If Holmgren calls people now, they’re going to ask for Bob or Boosh, not Leighton. And those two are staying put. They’d better be, anyway.

Yeah, Leighton is odd man out. Which is the proper conclusion, but still its weird because the guy was like 3.1 periods away from a Stanley Cup.

These are odd times.

Of course, Niemi won the Stanley Cup and was still odd man out in Chicago. Odd times indeed.

And Halak played very well in the playoffs. He got moved too. We’re just following the trend.

Defending Carter until 2021...

by Pardini36 on Jan 3, 2011 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know how much I agree with articles saying that Bob should be playing a lot. He’s 10 starts short of the max number of games he’s ever played in a season. Do we really want to give him 30-40 AHL starts? I’d rather him work with Jeff Reese than be even MORE alienated by being in a tiny english market traveling to other tiny english markets. Hopefully not starting the majority of the rest of the NHL games won’t shake his confidence but hopefully the tight knit locker room rubs off on it and he knows its a team effort, and that he has a long career ahead of him where we’ll NEED him to be the unquestioned #1, bumpy games or not.

by Derek F on Jan 3, 2011 10:13 AM EST reply actions

I agree I would take fewer games against NHL competition versus lots of games versus AHL competition where BOB could dominate. Look at the best AHL goalies even after a few seasons in the AHL they still struggle at times in the NHL like Bernier. Neveruith, and Corey Schineder (pardon the spelling on all 3).

There is also the possibility that BOB could struggle in the AHL especially with the Phantoms being pretty weak team and that could be devastating to a young goalies confidence.

I think some of these beliefs come from other sports in particularly baseball where you want to get your young players at bats and pitchers starts. But what about Football nobody says you need to get your young QB starts as the backup.

I think practicing with the NHL team and coaching staff getting used to the travel and packed schedule as well as learning your opponents via video study is just as valuable or more valuable than playing games in the AHL.

this is a surprise

What I am very worried about now is (1) no one claiming him (2) Him messing with Backlund and Riopel at Adirondack (“Charybdis”) (3) Boosh or Bob pulling a muscle or something (4) Homer trying to get him back through waivers and then someone else claiming him, while continuing to pay $750K for him.

Wait, that last one would never happen?

Lavi quote telling in hindsight

On the Flyers website:

"It seemed like he was in control from start to finish," said Laviolette. "There was no panic in him or from the team. He played a great game from start to finish."

I think this has always been the Flyers fear about Boosh, even back in 2002. He wasn’t clutch enough or something, not a playoff goalie, too nervous, too inconsistent. After The Shootout and the Devils series, and now being a relative calming influence on Bob, maybe the Flyers are now seeing things the way Geoff and I – er, well, maybe not Geoff :-)) – always have. A terrific team player, a great backup and using a baseball stat, his WAR/Salary is very, very high.

Homer/Lavi saw enough after last night. Thanks a lot, but see ya Mike. Enjoy the Cup Final bonus we gave you in that 2-year contract.

Ugh

My new most disliked word—trickle. Was watching NHLN and the highlight reel has an announcer saying, “the goal just trickled in”. Blech!

I don't know what the fans do to create that much more volume and excitement in the stadium, but it's definitely something extra [in Philadelphia]. They're passionate fans. They understand what's going on. They don't need a teleprompter to tell them to get up and cheer. -Cliff Lee

How legit is Bleacherreport.com? My buddy just sent me a link with all this talk about a deal involving Iginla coming here now that Sutter is gone in Calgary. This is the first I’ve heard of it. Is this even remotely possible, given our situation money-wise?

by Vansteel on Jan 3, 2011 3:36 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think so he fights so he has been rumored to be coming to Philadelphia more times the Kaberle.

Igilna makes more money than any single player on our Roster with a 7 million dollar cap hit. We would have to move two players to get him. That is not good.

The only forward I would be willing to move at this point would be Hartnell. He is not going to live up to his hefty contract being a 45 point scorer and all the damn minors and falls can be frustrating. I imagine Hartnell has a NTC or something so that is unlikely. Hartnell and Zherdev for Iginla would work out money wise. Force them to take Walker as well not sure if can be traded without clearing re-entry waivers 1st. If we did trade a 2 for 1 I would like to keep Zherdev now that he would actually have a spot to move up and play but I am not sure which two forwards will be moved to get him that spot.

Carter is younger and two points behind Iginla so far this season I don’t think he would moved for him.

by chrislanci on Jan 3, 2011 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

If we trade Hartnel, who’s going to be the lock for the Timberland “Stay on your feet” play of the night?

Now that I looked it up and read the article Hartnell was the name rumored to go along with Walker and prospects (which I wasn’t sure we even had). Me and Holmgren think too much a like so times it is scary especially considering that I have gotten straight A’s in Math since the 1st grade.

Sometimes I think you are Paul Holmgren Chris.

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home, but at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jan 3, 2011 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

Well Hartnell has a NTC, so I’d say they’re just making stuff up at this point.

The Flyers laugh at No Trade Clauses. Remember, they could also just let him go to Edmonton New Jersey instead.

Take bleacher with a grain of salt. Most stuff is so ridiculously insane there’s no way a rational mind would come up with it. Iginla for walker and Hartnell? Hmmm… Hartnell would have to waive his NMC to do it. And how much does Iginla have in the tank anyway? That’s not even considering what this would do to the team chemistry.

They let anybody write and there’s not a lot of editorial oversight (outside of optimizing for search), so yeah, grain of salt.
