Tuesday Morning JAVA & FLYERS

GOOD MORNING GOOD HOCKEY AND….SSSSSIIIIPP AHHH GOOD COFFEE ! Ok here is my spin on things first and foremost I am not surprised that the FLYERS are not in any TOP TEN who has surprised even though BOBROVSKY should have been on that list. Because FLYERS are NEVER on any Highlight reel. the NHL has a problem with the FLYERS for some reason and Hardly ever Promotes them on any highlights of any sorts. Its the League of Popularity contest and they also promote who they want to be popular (Propaganda – Big Brother NHL is watching !) Think about it, we have 5 players with over 10 goals this season and 10 players with over 10 assists and yet, WE are Hardly on any Highlight reel like Verizon’s Top Ten Plays of the week. Not surprised about no top ten fighters because we have not had any clean fair fights where we were dominate. Shelley and Carcillo have a unique fighting style, they beat the heck out of other players knuckles with their faces ! Next thread – I really would like to see Gustafsson play a game or two in the NHL to see what he can do. From what I hear and see he is a Strong Blue Chip D Man. As far as Leighton ? Unless their is an injury of a NHL Goalie in the League with a Playoff Potential NHL team with a Weak Back Up Goalie, Leighton is probably going to stay in the FLYERS organization. His Salary is too much for the AHL and yet his Salary is too much for another team to take on either half of the Salary or ALL of the Salary. The Rest of the NHL does not think he is worth his Salary. …. AS OF RIGHT NOW. Lets see how Desperate Chicago gets if Marty Turco gets Injured and all they have is Corey Crawford and they are on the 8th and final playoff spot. Suddenly Leighton looks mighty tasty then huh Deep Dish Pizza fans. (I hate Deep Dish and I HATE CHICAGO .. Sorry Post Stanley Cup Anger still exists) .. SO Sorry WJC that USA can only play for the BRONZE AGAINST SWEDEN but I guess team Canada was the better team with the 4-1 whooping on our USA BOYS. Sweden and RUSSIA was a close game that only RUSSIA Squeaked out over. I expect a HARD PLAYED GAME IN BOT MEDAL ROUNDS. GO USA ! and Go Canada ! Beat them Rooskies ! .. Well thats the morning news, now enjoy your coffee. I love mine like my Fiance, TAN, Strong and Ready. Little bit of Cream, No Sugar and a Little bit of Ice Cubes so I can Enjoy it now and not 10 minutes from now. So LETS GO FLYERS !

Does it really matter that you don’t see the Flyers on any highlight reels?

And Giroux’s shortie in the 1st games as #1 on the sportcenter top 10. But other then that there hasn’t really been any super-amazing top 10 worthy goals this year.

Not ALLOT of top 10 Worthy Goals ? How about Mike Richards Goal on Montreal HALAK in the post season

in the Playoffs when he came out and the collision and then the put in the Empty Net ? That should have been played over and over on highlight reels. and how many times have Richards or Briere One Timed redirected a puck into an Wide Open Empty Net because no one was covering them ? A WHOLE CRAP LOAD OF TIMES I HAVE TO SAY ! THEY SHOULD BE ON THE HIGHLIGHT REELS !

Who cares if the goals made the highlight reels or not? They still count the same as non-highlight reel goals.

by Phalange on Jan 4, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

A highlight reel of uncovered players redirecting pucks into wide open empty nets wouldn’t be all that exciting.

If it’s happened a whole crap load of times, then it’s probably not a great highlight. Highlights are usually reserved for things you don’t see every day.

It Matters to me

Because if I see one more Sydney Crosby Interview and Highlight reel or Talbot who is a Below Average Player at best get in front of another Camera but NOTHING on Mike Richards or Claude Giroux or JVR or Jeff Carter or Meszaros or Matt Carle, I think I am going to be sick. I am tired of the “DARLINGS” of the NHL I.E. Sydney Crosby and the Penguins being Media Whores and The FLYERS getting NO MEDIA P.R. AT ALL. By the way, did you like it when Sydney Crybaby got elbowed during the Winter Classic and took a spill. Can you say Waaaaaaaaahhhh. What a Poohnanny !

The Winter Classic should always be aired at night to as to avoid Mummers and as many bowl games as possible.

I don't know what the fans do to create that much more volume and excitement in the stadium, but it's definitely something extra [in Philadelphia]. They're passionate fans. They understand what's going on. They don't need a teleprompter to tell them to get up and cheer. -Cliff Lee

by doubleh on Jan 4, 2011 10:00 AM EST reply actions

Of course, you realize that no one outside of Philly knows about the Mummers. I learned this when I left Philly about 17 years ago and anytime I’d mention the Mummers I’d get blank stares, and then when you try to explain it, they think you’re nuts. I got the same reaction as a kid when I thought Captain Noah was known by kids everywhere.

Sarauj, Latvija!

by LVHokejs on Jan 4, 2011 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

Well, when I said Mummers, it’s meant to cover all the regional New Year’s parades that air early afternoon on Jan 1st. Certainly the WC ratings for last year’s event were affected by the Mummer’s Parade and that’s the only thing that would detract Philadelphians from watching their sports teams play (although I don’t get why as I am not a Mummer enthusiast).

It helps to be drinking heavily or heavily drunk. Either improves the Mummer mystique.

I have seen the mummers outside of Philly. I didn’t like them when I was a kid or now. But the seem to be a Philly cultural thing. So back in I think 1991 or 90 Savannah GA. throws some big St. Patty’s day festivals and had hire them for the parade. It might be the 4 of july not really sure but my mom and dad were going nuts to see them out of Philly. The people in Savannah didn’t no what to think and then their firwork thing they did at the end just sucked and they are remembered in Savannah for that crazy parade with wild firworks that nearly blew the barge up.

I wasn't even a year old but I stayed up to be outside the Vet with my Dad and Mom when the Phillies won the World Series 1980.

In all my years in the Military Traveling the world

THE BEST way to describe the Mummers to people outside of philadelphia is by explaining to them its like Mardi Gras but with “Ning Ning” music. You know, when the banjo’s go “Ning ning ning! da Ning ning ning! Da ning ning niinnggggg !” and guys drunk and puking and grabbing girls rears and girls drunk and flashing, yeah just like Mardi Gras.

I’ll sometimes compare them to the Mardi Gras Krewes of New Orleans, since those tend to be somewhat better known.

This reminds me of a middle school band trip to Virginia. My friends and I were hungry, so we looked through the phone book in our hotel room trying to find a place to get a cheese steak. Nobody knew what it was. We were shocked! How can these people live without cheese steaks?!

And even my wife, being from New England, didn’t know about TASTYKAKES!!! Or scrapple! Or Old Bay! Or Rita’s Water Ice! I’ve had to catch her up on a lot of PA/DE/MD culture. :-p

MUMMERS?

Ok well the Mummers is meant to be experienced either AT the Parade or IN the parade and not on TV. Ever try to watch the Mummers Parade on TV? It has my attention for a whole 3 minutes till I get bored. and the original intention of the Winter Classic In DAYTIME is to almost get back to the Roots of how the Game starts out in its original form. DAYTIME. with the Sun and Wind on your face. Nighttime is good for TV RATINGS I guess but I am torn, Between the Daytime with the Elements of Sun and Wind and Nighttime with the Ratings and the lights. I Like the Ratings, but if we play it at night under the lights, we might as well have it indoors. Am I right?

I was there in Pittsburgh, and I can say that even though the weather was bad, watching an outdoor hockey game at night in a football stadium under the lights was a pretty cool experience. There certainly was a buzz in the atmosphere, much more than I’ve felt at any regular hockey game. I would vote to keep doing it at night, and to use football stadiums, instead of ballparks.

It sounds like you had fun ! I just think that the SUN and the WInd and the Daytime is much more fitting to the Keeping it real getting back to the roots of how the game is played type deal. You know, when these kids were little playing outdoors in the daytime in Canada or Overseas. But I think they should have an ALL PA GAME with the FLYERS and the Penguins at PENN STATES Beaver Stadium – that would be the Bomb Diggitty

Well, they certainly had wind as it was blowing pretty hard at times during the game. I’m glad I wore a winter coat with a hood, as the fans who just wore jerseys and hoodies were miserable and shivering towards the end of the game. I would like to see the Flyers and Penguins meet for an outdoor game in Penn State. That would be great. Also, after experiencing the arrogance of the Pittsburgh fans up close and personal, I like their team even less (if that was even possible).

by Vansteel on Jan 4, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

I dont think that is accurate

I may be wrong, with the numbers and you may be right but still who has been more successful in the Post modern era? Like in the last 25 years. How many Cup finals have the HABS been to and how many have THE FLYERS been to? Heck just getting to One is an accomplishment. You have to win 12 games to JUST GET to the FINALS. not easy.

I looked it up. Actually I was wrong. The Habs have BEEN TO 12 Cup Finals since 1967, winning 10 of them. We have been to 7, winning 2. Like I said, it’s not even close. Take off the blinders. I love the Flyers too, but that doesn’t change the fact the Habs have an incredible history.

I’m no fan of the Habs, but I don’t think getting into an argument with their fans about the relative success of the 2 clubs is worth it. We’ve got a really good shot this year, and I sure hope we can pull it off. While in Pittsburgh, I was talking to a guy who worked for the NHL and he said he’s expecting big things from the Flyers this year. I hope he’s right, but the Cup is the toughest prize in all sports to win, so we’ve got a long road ahead of us yet.
