Friday Morning Fly By: Mikael Renberg the Prognosticator

I...There's...But... haha, but. Yeah. That's it. (Photo by Rich Lam/Getty Images)

Today's open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Recaps of last night's win: [BSH] [In Lou We Trust] [Philly Sports Daily] [CSNPhilly] [Daily News] [delcotimes.com] [Flyers Faithful] [Forsythe and the Flyers] [Flyers Goal Scored By...]
  • Danny Briere had to receive stitches after taking a slash to his hand: [Philly Sports Daily]
  • Rumors swirled last night that the Flyers wanted Jamie Langenbrunner. Too many stories popped up in about a ten minute window up to link them, so here's some self-promotion: [BSH]
  • Ville Leino had himself a fantastic night. A great story on the playmaking winger who is just getting more expensive to re-sign every game: [Philly Sports Daily]
  • The Flyers recalled Danny Syvret from the Phantoms: [BSH] [Philly Sports Daily] [Frequent Flyers] [CSNPhilly]
  • And the fans showed DSOD some love: "Just got to Philly... Flyers fans waiting/cheering in parking lot. Wearing shorts and t-shirts. 29'F. Unbelievable." [DannySyvret]
  • Want to read an amazing, fantastic, excellent article about the Flyers cap situation? No? I'm telling you, he might even explain it better than me. Mr. SanFilippo: Hats off to you, sir. We can't imagine this story showing up in any other paper in the United States: [delcotimes.com]
  • Jakub Kovar stopped 30 of 34 shots in a 4-3 loss Wednesday [euroflyers] and followed it up by stopping 53 of 55(!) shots and 2 of 2 in the shootout to get a 3-2 win. [euroflyers] How ridiculous is that?!
  • How about this quote from Peter Laviolette on James van Riemsdyk: "if you look at the scoring chances, he is our most consistent player." Oh, it's a great article as well: [Daily News]
  • Tim McManus has you covered for all the Phantoms news, including Brian Stewart being loaned to Bakersfield of the ECHL: [PostStar.com]
  • Why not Greenville? Former Flyer draft pick (and now Rangers prospect) Dov Grumet-Morris was named ECHL goalie of the month: [Forsythe and the Flyers]
  • Michael Leighton will start for the Phantoms today: [Philly Sports Daily]
  • Denis Bodrov played a team-high 22 minutes in a 5-3 win: [euroflyers]

  • Know who else sucks? Mike Milbury as GM. Revisit his destruction of the Islanders: [The Copper & Blue]
  • The Winter Classic was watched by 6.6 million people. Nearly a third of all Pittsburgh homes watched the game, while a higher percentage of Richmondites? Richmondians? Richmondicans? watched than Philadelphians: [NHL.com]
  • The Flyers Guardian was revealed, and it's... terrible: [NHL.com]
  • As the topic du jour, another look at the Lightning's turnaround. From a Lightning writer: [From The Rink]
  • Viktor Stalberg just crushed this game of post. One penalty shot, three pings, game over: [SBNation.com]

Characteristics I think of when considering the Flyers: bald, telekinetic, mind control, excellent vision, a titanium eagle.

I tell you, unless they can create a character exactly like that, then this whole Guardians thing is a farce.

JVR the most consistent player

Somewhere, MarioD’s head just asploded.

by Phalange on Jan 7, 2011 8:04 AM EST reply actions

I am far from JVR’s biggest fan, in fact, I am probably his biggest critic, but the notion of trading him for Langenbrunner is so idiotic that even I think Homer isn’t dumb enough to make that kind of move. JVR is the only positive from the season that shall not be named.

Now, two picks for Langenbrunner, ok, I can work with that. It definitely means that someone, most likely Z would be shipped off to a playoff or fringe playoff team in need of a scorer. He would have to net better picks than Langenbrunner, I would think.

I’ll be honest with you man, that shirt that they are giving out is crap-tastic. I mean, Its good to give blood regardless, but trust me, save yourself the trouble of being disappointed and just buy a real JVR player tee. Seriously, the material and the design mean the shirt will only last about 2 or 3 washes, and they only have xl shirts I think.

I really feel Langenbrunner is a perfect fit on the RW for Richards. Good size smart can play against the highest competition and can finish. He can also play PP and PK and he is a proven winner and playoff performer. What is not to like besides his age at 35.

by chrislanci on Jan 7, 2011 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with all of this. However, his age doesn’t really bother me considering he is a rental.

I agree with all of that. And I dare say he’s an upgrade over Andreas Nodl.

What I don’t like is that he costs $2.8 million. If the Flyers are truly looking to offer draft picks and no salary, there are serious, negative cap implications. Obviously, somebody gets pushed off the roster, and while Z is the popular choice, Carcillo makes a lot more sense to get dropped. That’s not enough space.

Second, draft picks? Really? Again? Unless you’re giving up a 3rd and a 5th (meaning, only one top-4 round pick), I don’t like it. Look at the Phantoms for eff’s sake.

But I think most importantly, while he is a decent player and the Flyers always have room for a two-way guy, why? Just why? Is Nodl not the exact definition of what you just typed? Sure, Langenbrunner may be better (emphasis on may) but if you’re bringing him in to fulfill that role, well… you already have someone fulfilling that role for one-third of the cost.

It’s unnecessary. And when you look at what it would take to get him here, what it would take to afford him, why are you giving all of that up for a potential upgrade?

I feel Nodl will regress to his mean of No Goal. He already has missed about 5 open netters. I just don’t like Richie paired with Nodl and JVR he needs someone with more experience on that line. I think Nodl will have a career very similar to Langenbrunner when all is said and done and wouldn’t want to move him in this deal.

I would like the move for Langenbrunner but us not getting him is certainly not the end of the world by any stretch.

I also agree with you 100% that Carcillo is a better choice.

As captain of team USA. I didn’t like the ice time he was getting, and thought the team could have used Ryan more and Jamie less.

by DLJr on Jan 7, 2011 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe I’m just colored by the first USA-Canada game, but I think he was part of the reason Parise looked like the best player on the tournament.

As far as ice time, he was on a line with Parise and he was effective on the PP. That’s about it.

by Snevik on Jan 7, 2011 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

And I don’t think he added much to the line at all, I think Parise (and Statsny) was the reason Parise looked so good. He didn’t start on Parise’s line, I think he was added to the line for or during the Norway game. Their first practice, he was on a line with Kesler and Brown. Either way, i think they used Langenbrunner and Ryan poorly in that tournament. I understand why they put him with Parise, short tournament where existing chemistry is important, I just don’t think he was good enough to play on it.

Geoff has Boosh, Mike's got Powe, Nodl is all mine!
Is this the right room for an argument?

by DLJr on Jan 7, 2011 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe, but if they moved him onto Parise’s line after one game, that wouldn’t change my opinion much.

To me, he looked like a Knuble with slightly less nose for the net and better defensive play. And given how important line chemistry tends to be, I can’t complain when his line was the team’s best.

And yes, Ryan was misused. Hating Langy instead of Ron Wilson for that seems strange.

by Snevik on Jan 7, 2011 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t hate Langenbrunner for it, but to me I saw a guy that couldn’t quite keep up with his line…you saw a guy as part of the best line on Team USA. We saw different hings, and that’s fine. I don’t expect more than 10% of people to agree with my opinion of Langenbrunner, but I have my basis for my opinion, you can accept or think I’m dumb for it, both are fine by me.

the man that wrecked the team and franchise is paid to go on television each night and tell fans what other teams are doing wrong. At this point, it’s like being advised about your health by Dr. Kevorkian.

I have to mention the Milbury article as it made me seriously laugh. I hate the man’s commentary. He was a total jackass during the Olympics (not to mention an embarrassment to the sport). I find it funny that the man who put on a clinic on how to RUIN a franchise is now commenting on the very sport he knows so little about. Just listen to his commentary if you have any doubts on that.

Wait, did you say the game is indoors? Because it looks like it’s raining even harder than it was at the Classic.
You must be watching a Devils home game. Those are the fans’ tears.

Like I said, he’s a center. The Flyers have too many of those. And when they already have Betts and Richards, why add someone who’s both? I think he’d be an upgrade over Powe, but when you have Briere, Richards, and Carter on three separate lines… There’s no line for McClement to center.

Doubt this is who they're looking at...

but Eric Belanger could be a decent fit. 55% faceoff guy, solid defensively, cheap cap hit that expires at the end of the season. Center but can play the wing. He could play on Richards’ line with Nodl, take faceoffs, then immediately shift over to LW once the play starts.

I suspect Holmgren’s looking for a bigger name and a more obvious top-nine upgrade, though.

I have driven through Bakersfield many times

Since relatives live north of there, and I can tell you, Brian Stewart’s lifestyle just took a major downgrade.

Agreed

From AHL player of the week, or whatever, to Bakersfield of the ECHL will be quite a blow to this man. I doubt we will ever here about him again. Or his future head-to-head matchups against Teslak.

NOOOOOOOOO!

Tastycake facing possible bankruptcy

What will they give away whenever a Flyer scores a goal? Tastycake has become almost synonymous with the team.

I’ve known Cholly Pizzi for a good chunk of my life. He’s been a long-time family friend.

Dude is nothing if not resourceful. He will find a way to right the ship, somehow.

That said, I used to work there during summers in college (mid-late 1990s) and it was a strange place to work. Real divide between the plant workers and the office workers.

That’s what happens when you spend so much on a new facility during a recession

This. Or load up with debt.

This is sad.

Question about the all-star game...

It was previously stated that Lavy could possibly be the second coach if the Flyers won their next two games. This was because they were projected to then have the best record in the east. If so, what if pitt wins on sat; won’t blysma be the coach instead? Just wondering because it was stated as fact a couple days ago.
