Who would've thought

That on the morning of October 10, the Flyers would be the sole remaining hope for Philly sports fans.

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

I still think the Phils can win the world series. Ohh wait you mean thats over too?

While I frown greatly on the use of the p-word at any point before it actually happens, that’s an interesting point. Although there have been other cities in the past where teams that have their stadiums farther away from downtown that PPL park is from Philly have still had their celebration downtown in the main city, so it’s tough to rule that out.

The City isn’t going to pay for a Union Parade especially when they don’t generate any revenue from the team. At least it better not as a tax payer I would be pissed.

I don’t think the city would pay for any parade at this point.

This I agree with, but I don’t think any other city in the area would be able to, either. Nobody’s going to worry about it too much until they actually need to.

The Phillies Parade is profitable for the city and generates tons of money from parking to sales tax and public transportation. The cost comes from paying for all the Cops and such. But still Modell’s sales tax alone from all the crap people by is could probably buy new computers for every public school in the city.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

The Phillies parade itself doesn’t make any money. It’s more of a reward for the millions in tax revenue from all the extra games and jersey sales and and everything.

SEPTA is probably thanking their lucky stars there’s no parade for the Phillies, they ended up giving hundreds of thousands of free rides the last time because there was no way to collect fares.

Flyers, Phillies, Union, Eagles, Phantoms, Wings.

by Pelti on Oct 10, 2011 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea but it was an inexcludable good, so it didn’t cost SEPTA a cent. They just had lost revenues. Opportunity cost was there, but running the trains with or without people has the same fixed cost.

Also, since the Phillies won in 2008, the bandwagon fans have come out of the woodwork. I live in South Philly, and work in Center City & Old City. I take the BSL to & from work every day, and it has gotten a lot more cramped on game days than it was before they won the WS. SEPTA is definitely making more in the long run.

I always find it absurd that hockey and soccer fans would spar. They face the same challenges in getting attention from the sports media, have do deal with the same “niche sport” nonsense, and have the same problem in trying to televise a game that plays for longer than 30 seconds at a time.

The Flyers are always going to be my favorite team, but the Union are really worth watching.

I have an ethical problem with the game of soccer. Guys collapsing and faking death is completely incomprehensible and should not be entertained. Also soccer has about 1 millionth of the excitement of hockey. Soccer can’t match the speed, physicality and skill it takes to play the game.

Never watched Barnaby, or Tucker play hockey, did you?
Some of that flopping is because a guy with cleats just stomped on your calf. Hard not to drop like a stone when that happens. Not to say some of it isn’t just pure acting (NE Reveloution, I’m talking to you!) If you’d actually watch a game, you’d see the skill involved. No it’s not as physical of a game, but neither is baseball or basketball. And it’s infinitely more interesting to watch than either. Plus, it’s a summer sport.

One of the best Flyers games I ever went to was a scoreless tie against Calgary. Kiprussoff and Niitymaki both stood on their heads for 65 minutes, facing a ton of rubber. That was the point where I decided that shootouts were an abomination, because that game should have ended 0-0.

When I see friends from college posting about some European soccer player I assume they just gave up on rooting for American sports and were sent to the minors of sports fandom.

Hilarious. I get this a lot when discussing basketball, especially around the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. I says something like “I hate basketball”, and the other person responds, “yeah, I prefer the college game”. Is it so unfathomable to a basketball fan that some people hate their monotonous gym class game, and can’t understand how it ever became so popular? I feel like we may as well have professional dodgeball.

I don’t understand the logic in playing a game for 65 minutes and if a winner isn’t decided, playing a different game to decide one. Why not just flip a coin? They can show it on the big screen going end over end in slow motion to create drama.

I also can’t understand what is so terrible about ties. The only thing any one ever says is that “it’s like kissing your sister” which is completely idiotic. To them I say:

1.) Try having an original thought, you dullard.

2.) If ties are so terrible, let them keep playing like they do in the playoffs.

3.) Shaddap you face.

Barnaby & Tucker were always consider side show jackasses that every one would talk shit about. They weren’t the norm. Diving & flopping is soccer is the norm.

Even without the side show nonsense, I just can’t, for the life of me, understand why people like the game so much all over the world. We have it on at my bar all the time & it’s like watching paint dry. To each his own, but it ain’t my cup of tea.

by EC.Comedy on Oct 11, 2011 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s inexpensive to play so the game isn’t closed off to the poor. The rules are simple, mostly. The only real physical requirement is fitness. The game developed and was standardized in England during the second half of the 19th century when its global empire was vast and still growing, so most of the world became exposed to it (this is also why cricket is the second-most popular team sport in the world).

Sports are kind of like religions. If you were born in a soccer-playing country, as most people are, you’d probably have played a lot as a kid. And we tend to become fans as adults of the sports we play as children. You would find the game beautiful and poetic and the outcomes either just or cruel. You would find the hand/arm restrictions to be evidence of the superiority of the game’s skill and art, as opposed to an absurd waste of hand-eye coordination.

There are webcams that are devoted to watching paint dry. Rules are also simple. Then you can graduate to watching grass grow, which requires a little more skill.

And soccer is also closest to hockey in the flow of the game. Bigger playing surface and fewer shots on net but still. When I started watching international soccer it felt very familiar.

The diving and other prima donna behavior is definitely a turnoff, as is the frequent fatalism toward the end of games, but anyone who thinks it’s less athletic is nuts. As someone who has played hockey all my adult life I found soccer to require a higher degree of overall fitness. As far as the skill of skating vs. the skill of not being able to use your hands, I can’t judge because skating has always come easy to me. But why quibble. They’re both impressive.

That makes sense in that if you are fit enough to play a full game of soccer you can certainly play a regular shift in hockey. But then there’s the board work and other kinds of strength conditioning that I didn’t feel I got playing soccer. And there are certain kinds of conditioning and muscle work that you can only get in the sport you’re playing, whatever it is.

Soccer does not have the bursts of exercise that hockey does. There really is no sport like hockey in that way. Football is the closest but their burst is way shorter than a normal hockey shift.

I started playing lacrosse when I was in third grade when I got bored of sitting in the outfield at T-ball and it was such a great life choice haha. It’s pretty brutal but so much fun. Teaches you to be pretty tough, quickly because you take a lot of hard shots. It also is a really hard game to just pick up so it takes a lot of extra practice time just to hone the basics.

Plus, you just get to wail on people. I played defense so my lax stick was 6 feet long and aluminum. As long as you somewhat look like you are trying to hit the other players hand/stick when he has the ball, it’s not a penalty. But, as a defensemen, you learn quickly where it hurts the most on a person’s body and you go after that spot non stop. Rib shots were my favorite. Follow through your pokecheck into the ribs and that attacker knows it’s going to be a long game.

I am a HUGE soccer fan. Behind hockey, it is the sport that I follow the closest.

What I tell people who hate on soccer for the diving:
Yes, it is an unfortunate part of the game. I hate it just as much as the next guy. And that goes for when my favorite players do it too. But, every sport has parts of it that are negative and shouldn’t be apart of the game. There are plenty in hockey as well. But, I am not going to let one small negative aspect of the game ruin the rest of it for me. Granted, some people just don’t find soccer appealing and that’s fine. It’s not for everyone. But to let the diving and rolling around be the reason for not liking the game, when it’s a pretty small part of the game, is simply close-minded. It’s a shame to let something so small and insignificant, take away from the overwhelming positives and excitements the game has to boast.

I hear you. I played soccer for almost 10 years and really enjoy the sport. I loved playing. But when I watch it on TV, I just get so frustrated with the diving. Agreed it is a relatively small part of the game, but sometimes I feel like it seems to be getting worse. I still watch the World Cup, because it’s the World Cup, but not much beyond that. I guess I was just disappointed to see such silly behavior at the highest levels of the sport, when it wasn’t present at all at the levels at which I played. There still is a lot about soccer to like, otherwise I wouldn’t watch it at all. Maybe I’m just too devoted to hockey to give it much time. :-p

I was a left-footed fullback and throw-in specialist most of the time, with occasional stints at goalie if my team didn’t have a real goalie. I could put a shot on goal from halfway to the mid-line, and could chuck the ball across the field and halfway up. I wasn’t fast, and my footwork stunk, but if I could get a moment of possession, I could clear the ball deep.

My left was dominant, but I could use my right. I also played positional – force the forward towards the line and the corner, to cut down his angles. I knew I was slower than a lot of other guys, so I’d give them plenty of room – to the outside.

When I learned some Slovenian and Croatian for my vacation last spring, it seemed to me that those languages don’t have articles at all. You don’t say “where is the hotel”, it’s just “where is hotel”. I noticed it because nouns have gender in those languages, but they don’t have gender-specific articles to go with them like I had to learn for German and Spanish. I wanted to use the correct genders, but it was harder for me to remember without an article preceding it. Is my observation correct?

I know ‘clutch’ is all subjective. But if there has ever mean a completely ‘unclutch’ or ‘reverse-clutch’ team, it has been the Philadelphia Eagles. Whenever the heat is on in the fourth quarter and the game is on the line, they find new and more and moer embarrassing ways to mess it up.

The Eagles will pick this up and win a few games. Will they get to 9-7 or 10-6 and sneak a wildcard? Unlikely. The only other chance is that the NFC East collapses around them and they somehow win the division. But I’m afraid that those reverse-clutch boneheaded moments are very likely to cost the Eagles playoffs.

Why am I posting this here instead of BGN? Man that’s a hard community to break into. BGN is my favorite Eagles blog but it’s been tough to go there lately because of what you pretty much said right there. It’s like every little small thing that happens during a game Reid should get fired for it, I’ll admit I’m a Reid guy but even if I wasn’t there isn’t anybody right now that we could get that’s better then him. Also since it looks like the NFC bEast is turning into the NFC lEast if we win next week & the Giants lose we’ll only be a game out of first kinda hard to believe but the season isn’t over yet

I don’t like Reid. I never did. Now, that said, I do see what he has done for this franchise and for awhile the things he was good at worked, very well. And they were able to overshadow his short comings, but those things aren’t working anymore. I don’t think he is all that great in the draft anymore. And maybe that has something to do with Roseman being the GM. Though I get the sence that Heckert was a yes man and was pretty much there to back up Andy. Offensively Andy seems to do a decent job finding talent but defensively? He blows. I haven’t written Graham off yet because he hasn’t had a chance, but if and when he comes back where is he going to go? Babin and Cole aren’t going anywhere. Maybe Graham can be a SAM or WILL but I doubt it. His clock management is still atrocious, his inability to make adjustments is back breaking and now, it seems like he and his staff get out coached every week. Don’t even get me started on Juan.

All that said, Andy deserves to finish out the season. The only way I would even consider making a change with him is if they brought in a guy that they knew would be their coach going forward. A guy who could start to install his systems and schemes now, consider it an extended training camp for next year. Let this season go down in flames for all I care. But you don’t fire Reid so that Marty can take over for the rest of this season. That just makes no sense to me.

I am also a huge Reid fan, pun intended. My head is about to explode with all the blame the defense is getting. Am I the only one is see allowing < 30 pts while giving up 5 turnovers as a success. Where the hell is the high powered offense that the entire defensive scheme is designed to protect the offense is averaging a 11th best < 25 pts per game and is the top rushing and top 3 team in offense in terms of yards. It is a joke. The defense is predicated on the offense being potent and forcing the opposition to go down the field to keep up. It is not designed to play from behind.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Yesterday during the game I got really heated & was like if we give up another TD after scoring I am fully on the fire Juan bandwagon but after the game I realized something our opponents have gotten 45 points off of turnovers we’ve given up 132 total if you take away the 45 we would have only give up 87 this year so I guess it isn’t only the defenses fault but they have also had 3 leads this year in the 4th & couldn’t protect it but then again the offense couldn’t score in those games in the 4th

by The Legend on Oct 10, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

The defense is getting blamed because it’s atrocious. I think only 4 teams in the league have allowed more points than they have. The Eagles offense is good. They move up and down the field pretty well. 3rd in the NFL in yards per game. 3rd in rushing yards per game. Their issue is the Red Zone, and that I blame mostly on play calling and the turnovers, INT’s and Fumbles.

Their defense is absolutely horrific to watch. Their linebackers are a joke, their safeties are also horrible. Juan’s head is so far up his own ass that he has no idea what is going on, on the field. You have the 2nd best cover corner in the league playing Zone? Are you kidding? Ray Charles could see that, that is a mistake. 7th best in passing yards against yet 3rd worst in rushing yards giving up.

The defense is predicated on the offense being potent and forcing the opposition to go down the field to keep up. It is not designed to play from behind.

I don’t even understand what this means. Their defense isn’t predicated on playing from behind? Yet in 4 of the 5 games that is exactly what has happened because they have allowed the opposition to march down the field and score. A defenses job is to stop the other team from scoring and they aren’t doing that. If it weren’t for the wide 9 being as successful as it is the defense might even be worse.

What blows my mind is people bitching about the Wide 9. The Wide 9 is not the issue. The Wide 9 is a scheme designed to get to the QB. And the Eagles led the league in sacks until yesterday. When, coincidentally enough, they pretty much abandoned the Wide 9 and shortened the gaps. And what was the result? 1 sack and 143 yards allowed on the ground. Which is 3 yards more than the Eagles were giving up on the ground per game anyway. So, even after shortening the gaps the Eagles still couldn’t stop the run. Nor could they stop the Bills from turning short passes(>10 yards) into 20 yard gains. Which has nothing to do with the Wide 9 at all.

Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

by EREX21 on Oct 10, 2011 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Slowly marching down the field is fine and scoring is fine. But that is a clock game the defense if the offense could have answered any of those 4th quarter scores with only a simple filed goal in the 4th quarter of any of the games the Eagles would be 4-1 and not 1-4.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

You mentioned that the defense is not designed to play from behind and like I said, 4 of the 5 games that has been the case, and yet, the one game it wasn’t, the 49ers game, the defense blew the lead. The defense blows. Period. The only bright spot has been the Wide 9.

That has nothing to do with their defense. You were the one that said you didn’t understand why they were getting so much blame, and I illustrated for you exactly why they are getting blame.

As for their offense, I agree, they should score more than 25 a game, which is their average, not 24. But again, that has nothing to do with the defense being atrocious.

I think they are related if the Eagles were scoring more especially giving all the opportunities they had in the RED ZONE the opposition would be playing into the strength of the defense and not have the team to run the ball and throw screen passes. To slowly drive down the field.

The Eagles D is playing better than the Patriots D and yet the Pats are 4-1. How come. The offense doesn’t constantly turn the ball over and scores when they should.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

The Eagles D is playing better than the Patriots D how exactly? The Patriots D gives up less points per game than the Eagles by almost 3 points.

The reason the Patriots Defense is giving up so many passing yards is because teams are forced to pass against them because when you are losing, which is generally the case against the Patriots, then you have to pass to try and catch up.

The difference is the turnovers. Patriots are +3 and the Eagles are a league worst(tied the the Steelers) -10.

No, the Patriots defense is giving up so many passing yards because their pass defense is really really bad. They’re giving up 8.1 yards per pass play — it’s not just that teams are calling a lot of passes, it’s that they’re gouging out big chunks of yards with each pass.

by Eric T. on Oct 10, 2011 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

And MY EYES tell me that simply isn’t true. SD and OAK racked up yards even in the first half, before there was any prevent D. The NE D is getting “timely turnovers” which other people consider “incredible luck that P. Rivers and J. Campbell cannot decipher the colors of the opponents jerseys.” If teams start taking care of the ball, that NE D is going to look even worse.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

You sound like you’re describing a team that’s been up by 28 points at the half in every game.

Miami was never down by more than 7 until the fourth quarter. San Diego had 196 passing yards (including five plays of at least 20) in the first half. Jason Freaking Campbell had 161 yards in the first half, when the game was always within 7 points.

This isn’t a team that’s giving up a lot of prevent yards in the last five minutes. It’s a team that’s giving up huge chunks of yards throughout the game.

by Eric T. on Oct 10, 2011 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Whichi is exactly my point if the Offense would get their shit together let the Pats then the Eagles D which is better at the Pats especially in pass defense wouldn’t be an issue.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

The Eagles D is in no way better than the Pats D.

by Uhaul on Oct 10, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

In no way?

Pass yards per game: Eagles 211.8, Patriots 326.6
Sacks: Eagles 16, Patriots 8
Yards per game: Eagles 352, Patriots 433
Yards per play: Eagles 5.8, Patriots 6.8
Yards per pass: Eagles 6.5, Patriots 8.1

The Eagles’ rush D has been worse (5.0 yards per carry), but the Patriots’ rush D hasn’t been great (4.6 ypc), and their overall yards per play and yards per game are much worse.

The Eagles have given up 13 more points, it’s true. But that includes 35 points on drives that started on the Eagles’ side of the field, whereas the Patriots’ defense has only been put in that spot three times — and allowed TDs all three times.

I don’t mean to say the Eagles defense is playing great, by any means. But the only argument to be made defending the Patriots D is that they’ve gotten a couple more turnovers.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

In no way. Relying upon those statistics is folly. The Pats have played better offenses & their D is going to surrender more yards b/c the opposing team is forced to pass against them. Also, if you watch both teams, you will see a clear difference between the two. The Pats D is plainly better.

I’m not saying the Pats D is great, but the Eagles D is pathetic.

by Uhaul on Oct 10, 2011 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sorry, but why is it folly to rely on yards given up? I get that there’s an exception for “bend, don’t break” defenses, but all you’ve theorized is that the Patriots played better offenses.

Is that even true? How do you judge a better offense, other than yards per game? And then aren’t you getting into an argument over expected yards allowed, which would be folly according to you?

I’m just confused that you throw out evidence that disagrees with you, instead relying on one misrepresentation (opponents are forced to throw), one non-argument (watch them), and one that can only be proven using the stats you dismissed (better offenses).

The Pats have played better offenses

Both teams played Buffalo (and the Eagles held them to fewer points and over 100 fewer yards). New England’s other four opponents — Miami, San Diego, Oakland, and the Jets — are not exactly world-beating offenses; that group includes three bottom-ten QBs.

their D is going to surrender more yards b/c the opposing team is forced to pass against them

I quoted yards per pass attempt being much worse. That doesn’t get better because you throw more — if anything it gets worse, because the other team is focused on defending the pass.

Also, if you watch both teams

I’ve watched every game the Patriots have played this year. Have you? I’m going to guess not, because if you had, you’d have seen that their pass defense has been epically bad.

Was just going to say the top part of what Eric said but he beat me to it but if you don’t believe him here are the Bills stats from the games.

vs New England: Rushing yards 79 Passing yards 369 Total yards 448

vs Philly Rushing yards 143 Passing yards 188 Total yards 331

They had 117 more yards against New England then they did against us

by The Legend on Oct 10, 2011 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The only defensive stats that truly matter are points surrendered, red zone D & takeaways. The Pats are superior in all three categories.

by Uhaul on Oct 10, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I just disagree with this.

When one team’s offense has repeatedly caused the defense to start in their own end of the field, it seems foolish to say that they’re a worse defense because they gave up more points.

Moreover, why do you include takeaways? Because they help with field position. You know what else helps with field position? Not giving up lots of yards. It’s completely inconsistent to say that turnovers matter but yards don’t.

by Eric T. on Oct 10, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

The Packers surrender more yards/game than the Eagles do…would anyone claim the Eagles D is better? Doubtful. The Niners only give up 12 less yards/game than the Eagles do, would anyone suggest the Eagles D is anywhere near as good as the Niners D? Also doubtful.

by Uhaul on Oct 10, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Way to completely sidestep the point.

What you have just done is suggest that yards are not the only important measure. That does not prove that they are irrelevant.

by Eric T. on Oct 10, 2011 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying they are completely irrelevant. I’m saying that relying upon yards to suggest the Pats D is worse than the Eagles D is a mistake. There are better statistical measuring sticks for defenses that indicate the Pats D is better than the Eagles D.

by Uhaul on Oct 10, 2011 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, so let’s go back to my replies to your “better statistical measuring sticks”.

You said two of the three stats that matter are points and takeaways.

The points are very close, and the difference between them entirely arises from the number of times the Eagles’ defense has been given a short field to defend. The Patriots haven’t been better in that regard — they’ve given up a TD every time they started in their own end — they just haven’t had to do it as often. So I don’t see the Patriots’ fewer points allowed as being the result of better defense.

The reason takeaways would be considered important is because of their impact on field position, and the Patriots’ penchant for giving up yards also impacts field position. So while I acknowledge that the Patriots have been better at generating turnovers, I don’t see that as being more important than their giving up a lot of yards. I don’t think the extra 0.8 turnovers per game is worth 80 yards of field position.

If the opposition was trying to keep up with an explosive offense that scored points they wouldn’t be running the play or throwing short passes. They would be forced into going 3 wideouts and putting the Eagles in Nickel coverage and they wouldn’t have time to go deep with the ends getting pressure from the Wide 9 line scheme.

With the exception of yesterday, that is exactly what every team has been doing. The Eagles got lucky against the Rams that Jackson got hurt and the Rams receivers are horrendous.

You don’t build a defense with the sole job of protecting a lead, just like you don’t build an offense with the sole job of trying to win low scoring games. You build an offense to score and a defense to stop the other team from scoring. The offense is doing it’s job for the most part. Is it perfect? Obviously not based on all the turnovers and red zone issues, which again, has more to do with the play calling than the offense itself.

Turnovers is on the players can’t blame play calling for playing stupid. Like stupid Vick holding the ball forever at the end of the 2nd half letting time run out before he threw the ball away.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree turnovers are on the players, absolutely. But the play with Vick at the end of the 1st half. That’s as much on Reid for not having any timeouts, and calling 2 while his defense was on the field, as it was on Vick for holding onto the ball and then throwing it through the back of the end zone as opposed to on the ground or to the sidelines.

I’ve avoided getting into it yesterday because I knew I’d have a bunch of people yelling at me and I wasn’t in the mood for that, but…

The scorekeeper doesn’t stop the clock on his own when he thinks the clock should stop. He stops the clock when he sees a ref signalling for the clock to stop. So it doesn’t stop when the ball hits OB — the ball has to hit OB, the ref has to react to that and wave for the clock to stop, and then the scorekeeper has to react to that and stop the clock.

That whisper-down-the-lane style of clock management always takes an extra second or two. It’s not a hometown screw job; it’s the system.

by Eric T. on Oct 10, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I didn’t see the game so I was just commenting that there is always some delay in the NFL games with respect to clock timing. Even delay of games are frequently called a second (or more) too late. It’s amazing how much imprecision there is given it’s a multi-billion dollar industry.

he didn’t value it before, but if you want to run the wide 9 you need line backers that can get off blocks and stop the run much better then what we have, so that is something he needs to change.

It’s a lot more complex than this but look at the two teams that got to the Super Bowl last year. Both the Packers and Steelers (urgh) had great linebackers. Like I said, I know there are more variables than that but those linebackers were a huge part of the success both team’s defenses had last season.

I don’t see BSH as having an intimidating factor, as you call it. I prefer to think of it as thought -provoking, which is what a good blog should do. These are good people here, with an excellent leadership group (very clutch).
In fact, had I not joined this blog and learned some of the ropes, I never would have spent an hour or more last Sat. morning tracking down data and analysis regarding Steckel, Betts, Kanopka, et al and the importance of winning faceoffs. What I found out truly surprised me, so much so I considered writing a separate fanpost on the topic.
One should also consider the difference between football and hockey; I find that on the whole, hockey people just tend to be smarter and more erudite (Flyers FO not withstanding).

I don’t see BSH as having an intimidating factor, as you call it. I prefer to think of it as thought -provoking, which is what a good blog should do.

We challenge a lot of assumptions here. When you have something that you’ve believed for years without knowing exactly why, and suddenly people are aggressively calling you on it, it can be unsettling. I’d say the five stages of conventional viewpoint grief are:

1) Dismissal – “What kind of nerd math says plus/minus isn’t important?”
2) Appealing to outside authority – “Every major analyst uses plus/minus.”
3) Shock – “I can’t believe you guys can sit there and say plus/minus doesn’t matter.”
4) Defensiveness – “I was just trying to say Meszaros played well last year, why is everyone jumping on me?”
5) Acceptance – “Maybe plus/minus isn’t the best way to show it. What was his Corsi Rel, anyway?”

I’d guess a lot of people give up somewhere between steps 2-4. But I think the ones who at least stick with it to figure out why BSH is skeptical of plus/minus — even if they don’t agree — come away with a much better understanding.

Keith had ridiculously low on-ice Sv% (0.889) and was still only 0.40 GA/60 worse. I had Keith winning that Norris all along, so that doesn’t change.

I think Green deserved a nomination more than Pronger, that doesn’t change.

The Norris Green should have won was Chara’s lifetime achievement award (he’s so big and tough!).

And I dispute your characterization of Green’s minutes as “ridiculously cushy.” He had tougher CorsiRelQoC than E. Johnson, Hal Gill, Enstrom, Ferrence, and a bunch of other guys that are generally considered capable defenders. He didn’t have the toughest competition, but he wasn’t sheltered as much as you’re indicating. He was middle of the pack for the league, and he played for a coach that wasn’t an aggressive line-matcher in any event.

That’s a fair criticism. I was speaking in relation to those we were looking at. They weren’t “ridiculously cushy” for NHL defenders. Apologies.

I still think Pronger deserves a nomination more than Green. He had a higher CorsiRel, lower OZ%, tougher competition, worse teammates, worse luck, and more ice time. But I don’t really care any more, I was just curious.

I’m torn about how to address luck. At some level results are results, especially for just an individual, one-season award. I get that if a guy has absurd Sh% or PDO then maybe you have to re-think some of the things, but I think there is enough fuzziness around what luck is that it’s tough to use to adjust for a single season’s performance.

Again, also fair in the context of single-season awards. And I’m a lot more likely to adjust for bad luck (Keith’s on-ice save percentage) than good luck (Green’s on-ice shooting percentage), but I still think it’s relevant.

From the grumpy old man's article"
His tenacity in front is why Simmonds is getting more power play time than Scott Hartnell. Simmonds had 3:51 vs. Hartnell’s 1:39 in the game.

With all of the rumors, and they are just rumors, that Hartnell is on the block, things like the above quote don’t do anything to dispel the notion. Now that the LBH line has been broken up and Hartnell’s role on the PP has gone to someone else they might as well trade him, if they can find someone to take his contract, and he waives his no trade. (He does still have one of those right?)

Hartnell’s salary is lower than his cap, since he is toward the end of his contract. This makes his contract more palatable to lower-cap teams.

Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."

by Snevik on Oct 10, 2011 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I see three possible categories:

1) Teams that would spend over the cap if they could care only about cap hit.
2) Teams looking to spend somewhere between the floor and the cap care only (or mostly) about salary.
3) Teams that would spend below the floor if they could care about salary / cap hit differential.

I know Nashville’s payroll is pretty low, but I’d have guessed they were still in category 2. Would they cut their payroll to $35-40M if they had the chance?

And to your question, no, I don’t think we have examples of teams that have shown they care about the salary / cap hit differential yet.

by Eric T. on Oct 10, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Nashville almost certainly would. It would absolutely be in Poile’s playbook (just as trying to circumvent the cap legally is in Homer’s).

They are close to the floor, but most OTF’s think they are there in order to be able to add salary at the deadline. Not saying Hartnell would definitely be desired by Preds, just saying that they tend to be much more into cost savings than other teams. Very different from the departed Atlanta -they just lost $$ over and over again.

I been saying it for years. Hartnell is not a power forward and doesn’t provide any net presence. If he did the things Simmonds does he would be fine but for some reason I am assuming poor equilibrium Hartnell doesn’t do shit on the PP. 18 power play goals in the last 3 seasons.

“We want to talk about getting hit from behind and shots to the head, but we allow a guy to stay in the game after taking a baseball swing at a guy’s face? That’s a joke.”

I’m not well versed on all of the rules yet, but I can’t tell if he said this out of anger or if high sticking to the face should actually be considered the same thing as a shot from behind/head shots? I hope this makes sense!

If there is malicious intent a match penalty can be called, whether there is blood or not. From what shanny has done about it he must have felt there was intent so I agree he maybe should have been kicked from the game.

Interestingly enough I was at the game and could not see it very well plus I have not seen a replay but to me it looked like they were jostling on the faceoff and pmb’s stick rode up and caught him. It wasn’t like he tomahawk chopped the guy over the head so I’m not sure it really warrants a suspension, at least from my angle.

by kckrebs on Oct 10, 2011 10:55 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That ’s about how it started. However I think the shot he gave him was intentional. Sure looked it in the replay anyway, but I did not study it.

Yeah, those hack Pens wouldn’t even be in the discussion without the SO. I’m all on board with the Pens trashing, but let’s not pretend they aren’t going to be a guaranteed playoff team with or without the SO.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 10, 2011 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

No but it still needs to mean something to win in regulation. It’s insulting that you get the same amount of points for winning by shootout.

I think it’s ridiculous that not all games count the same, but I prefer a SO to a tie so I’m basically over bitching about it. I’d rather 10 minutes of OT and then at least 5 shooters per team, but I wouldn’t scrap the SO and I don’t think it’s meant to keep certain teams competitive.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 10, 2011 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not even anti shootout, but thats why a regulation or overtime win should be 3 points. You won by outplaying the opponent as the sport is meant ot be played. 2 points for a shootout win and 1 point for the overtime loss.

I am surprised the competition committee hasn’t changed this yet. I am pretty sure the SO and 2 pts for winning it isn’t well received by players coaches and the entire country of Canada.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Americans are too dumb for a 3-2-1-0 system.

I would point out that in the past teams would just suffocate the end of the game trying to get the guaranteed points, so theoretically there are fewer shootouts by treating them the same as an OTW/L.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 10, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah so that is called strategy. The Rangers and Pens probably should suffocate the OT to get the shootout since they are usually dominate at that part of the game. The NHL is retarded to think that real hockey fans only like goal scoring.

by chrislanci on Oct 10, 2011 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

And if they had Crosby all of last year and Malkin for more than they did, they probably wouldn’t have needed the SO to begin with.

Is it too early to say that Wayne’s World is going to be better then people thought? The reason why I’m asking is because at the time of the trades the two most that were talked about were Voracek & Schenn & he’s been better then both so far although I guess that isn’t fair to Schenn since he was injured & is in the AHL until they call him up

That Cammalleri video points out a significant design flaw at that stadium in that he can’t get to the dressing room but from the ice and not the bench, at least not for the Habs. Luckily his injury was not as serious as it could have been, but no one could know that right away. What if it was more serious and the refs didn’t stop play? Potential lawsuit?

by mtitanic on Oct 10, 2011 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

I guess today anything is a potential lawsuit, but that’s not what I immediately thought. Definitely are lack of foresight on their design plans, though.

Just another reason to get hockey out of Atlanta. A real hockey town would never make such an obvious design flaw. Cammalleri is lucky to even escape that arena with his leg. The NHL really needs to start contracting these sunbelt teams and bringing hockey back to the arenas and fans that really know and love the game. Wait, what?

Obviously, this is all speculation.

I’d do the following: look for parking early, if they’re not open, then park at chickies and petes. If they’re open early, there’s a shuttle you can take.

With adding food in, perhaps 3-330. There shouldn’t be much traffic on the turnpike, and that puts you in or near Philly by 5-30. Add in the parking, walking, sit down by 6. eat, back in time for game at 730

I worked the K lot (the Linc) for a few weeks in the summer, so it all depended on what time the Phils were playing. I know that’s not much help, but I would imagine 3 wouldn’t be too early. If memory serves.

Anyone looking to buy tickets? I have two for sale…goal line we shoot on twice…

And no, I’m not tyring to start a business…I just bought my tickets before I knew I was moving to Charlotte and it’s an expensive commute for a game.

Hopefully it ends up better than the last time 2 times I saw a Western Conference teams at the WFC. One was a 5-1 massacre at the hands of Kiprusoff and the Flames. The last one they blew a lead to Anaheim in the last minute and then lost in OT or the SO. There was a point when Lupul Carter’d and someone yelled, “That’s why we traded you.” Seemed funny at the time, but now it just makes me sad.

I had a similar conversation with my mom tonight when she commented that driving from Boston to Acadia National Park was 7 hours and it felt long. I’m like “Well, people drive for 3 hours to shop by my house, or go to the hospital and the beach is 2 and a half hours away and I went there for a day.” How my perspective on driving has changed since moving to the South….

Hey, my family has made that 11 hour drive from deep South Jersey to Acadia national park lots of times; and I’d gladly make that 11 hour drive a hundred times again before I suffer through the overseas highway between Ft Lauderdale and Key West even one time. Once was more than enough for me, and it’s only about a third of the distance. I don’t know why exactly I remember it being so bad, but we were unusually miserable on that ride.
