Harry Zolnierczyk called up by Flyers

Your guess is as good as ours. Harry Zolnierczyk has been recalled by the Philadelphia Flyers, announced by the team this morning on their Twitter account.
Harry Z had a strong training camp and stuck around until the very end of the preseason before returning to the Adirondack Phantoms. He was a bit of a loose cannon out there, but he definitely has a ton of speed and isn't afraid to mix it up physically.
But why the call up? The Flyers already have 13 forwards on the roster, plus Ian Laperriere and Blair Betts on LTIR. We're going to have to assume that something else is going on here, likely an injury to one of the 12 forwards currently in the lineup. So, somebody not named Jody Shelley. That's what we're going with until we hear otherwise, at least. UPDATE: Reports say it's a minor injury to Andreas Nodl. So there you go.
As for why Zolnierczyk was called up instead of another player -- you're probably thinking Brayden Schenn -- it's definitely all about the salary cap. Zolnierczyk only makes $900,000 under the cap when in the NHL, and thus the Flyers can afford him right now.

There’s nobody in FA who can help fill the void? Craig Smith from NSH or Luke Adam from BUF are both under the radar centers who are putting up solid numbers so far. Drop Schenn. He’s not coming up any time soon. And even if he does, you’ll probably be able to pick him right back up. Play smart, you’re not stuck with what you got.
Haha. I have Craig Smith already. He hasn’t done anything for me since I picked him up (I saw he had scored two goals and grabbed him). But we’ll see what he does as the year goes on.
As for dropping Schenn, I can’t. Not in a 20-team league full of Flyers fans. I would kick myself all year if someone else picked up and stashed him and he then got called up and went nuts.

I don’t know, I don’t think Schenn will be on the Roster this year barring an injury. And he’s eating up a roster spot that could be producing you points. But it’s completely up to you. Are you stocked at any other position that you have an expendable player at? What points do you need help at? I wouldn’t give up on Smith yet, he’s a solid player, he’s not going to give you a lot of G/A but he’ll put the puck on net and generally he’s a defensively responsible player.
With a league this deep, the FA pool is very limited. Especially for me; I’m a hockey n00b and I have no idea who’s good.
And I’m not giving up on Smith.
I have two good goalies, but i can’t really trade either of them since they’re really my only competitive advantage. I should win at least the goalie cats every week, and my cobbled together corps of forwards should be able to steal a cat or two. I’m just panicking a little because Carter is VERY difficult to replace, and impossible to replace with FA.

I think you’ll be good. Just pay attention to what the best teams in your league do. Follow hockey news closely, especially for the teams of the players in your fantasy team.

True.
I’ve always run a 20-man roster. 13 starters, 7 on the bench. For a couple years, I had 18 teams in the league. The talent pool just isn’t deep enough for that. This year I cut it back to 12, which I think will be much better. It also allows for double round robin scheduling, which is a huge plus.

I like Nick Spalling. Maybe a draft pick too? Doubtful, though you never know how other teams value your players. He hasn’t had a lot of production so far this year, but he would be a good fit with Couturier and Read. His play in the playoffs late year was exciting too! Although he’s not very defensively responsible, he does have speed and youth that Hartnel doesn’t.

If anyone it’d be Hartnell, plus if you buy into the narrative, he’s one of the partiers, not family man Briere.
Hartnell makes $4.2mil for what’s now 10mins of ineffective, slow ice time, sitting in the box at bad times, and playing a not-as-good Hartnell role to Simmonds. Prime candidate to move if he waives his clause.

Quitter, plus he has a point. What haven’t you liked about Rinaldo thus far (he’s been better than advertised IMO, though my expectations were low) and you have mentioned it a lot in random spots.

Hrmm let’s see:
There are phantoms that I’d rather use in his place, that are around the same price range, that I know won’t do anything that will put the team in danger. His spot on the roster is antiquated. I’d be pining for Shelley to be removed also. When Shelley comes back I will still be doing this. You have a player like Simmonds who does what Rinaldo does and more, but does it intelligently.
Rinaldo is a problem waiting to occur. Sure he’s drawn one more penalty than he’s taken, but there’s a difference between Briere doing something like that, and Rinaldo doing something like that. If you are going to be starting on this team, you have to bring more to the table aside from hitting people and drawing 1 more penalty than you’ve taken.
I despise him as a player. he’s not Bertuzzi, he’s not Avery, he brings no scoring to the forefront. When he is on the ice he has a high probability of doing something stupid. He’s been gifted a spot on the team and continuously acts like a jackass.
Doughty was on the trolley tracks? Nice response scumbag.

Actually Briere is not particularly good at it, bad example. And why does a 4th liner have to score, that’s not really his role. No one you bring up is likely to contribute significantly in those limited minutes offensively either. And the response to the Doughty hit, really, talk about letting your emotions blind your opinions.
Basically what a get from this is 1. You hate Rinaldo in general, and 2. You don’t think he belongs here because of what might happen with him on the Flyers roster rather than what has happened thus far. I know he hasn’t had a good track record, but he also mentioned something about making changes in order to earn a spot on the big club, maybe be a bit more open minded. He has been ok. I don’t care for the role of a fighter either, but I view him as more of a pest who plays limited minutes. And even though there are players I’d prefer in that spot over him, I don’t see them making a meaningful difference in the teams results. In fact if draws more penalties than he is taking, I view those limited minutes he is playing as valuable in a 4th line capacity.

Also you are judging Rinaldo on what he has done outside of this season it seems and what you are afraid he may do that he hasn’t yet, and that’s fine, but that doesn’t mean that 4th liners face 1st liners as shut down lines, and it doesn’t mean Rinaldo has done much to play himself off of the roster yet.

Getting three penalties at once (fighting, instigator, misconduct) out of Penner certainly helped with that. I dunno, I’m not sure what to make of Rinaldo. From some of the stuff that happened in the AHL last year, I was sure he’d be batshit crazy. But in the preseason this year, it sounded like he was over that and was maybe playing hockey for a change. Four regular season games isn’t much to go on, but I really haven’t seen anything that would earn the label “excellent.” So I want to know what I’m missing. What’s so great about this guy that makes Lavagasm go straight for the personal attacks anytime CCB mentions him?

Yeah, and I see value in getting Penner out of the game for 10 minutes and addign a penalty, don’t you? Look the guy plays tiny minutes, he isn’t my kind of guy but so what, if he draws more than he takes, that’s something I value in a limited 4th line role.
I read excellent as an exaggerated response provoked from CCB multiple anti Rinaldo posts. Excellent is too far, but if your expectations were as low as mine, then excellent isn’t that big of a stretch haha.
