I’m hopeful, though not at all convinced, that Zolny’s play bumps Shelley off the team now that Shelley’s suspension is up. Personally, a Zolny/Talbot/Nodl line sounds very intriguing to me.

You roll 12 skaters, 6 dmen, and Rinaldo as your 13th. Keep Special Ed on a short-leash and when/if he does something stupid put in Harry for a couple of games

Hmm .. SpEd is much quicker to type than BSC … you may have a new nickname for Rinaldo in the works there.

instead of just voicing my disdain for him, I just call him that
And I will give him this, he stayed out of the negative spot-light last night, so I’d let him play a couple of more games. Short leash that gradually extends as long as he doesn’t do anything stupid

BSC is shorter than SpEd as abbreviations go, though.
And I’m thinking that some people might take offense to calling him “Special Ed”

Zolny made one good play he didn’t really stand out over the course of the game as a must start NHLer.
No. According to certain individuals, a 4th liner is expected to simply not suck and be unnoticed. Harry Z accomplished both of these

He was also rolling on the 4th line with Talbot and Rinaldo… hard to stand out much there if your looking for “plays.”
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
I am not saying he played poorly I just wouldn’t jump to the Zolny must be in the lineup from now on. 4th liners are role players I am not sure Zolny can be that type of player. Does he play the PK etc…
I’m almost certain he has PK experience in the pre-season. Neither Rinaldo nor Shelly do. So I would say either roll 4 “good” lines with him-Talbot-Nodl, and move Read off the PK because he is doing so well offensively… or its down to Harry Z/Nodl if you insist on a “fighter” and then I take Nodl.
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
Yeah. What I take from this is that we may have another forward capable of playing around the level of the NHL/AHL bubble. I don’t think he moves up the depth chart, or even if I’d rather have from as a 13th than Shelley or Rinaldo yet (cap hit aside).
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Whut d’ya mean? He had two fights! And another six minutes worth of minor penalties! PERFECT for the team that insists on carrying Shelley and Rinaldo.

Not sure what one has to do with the other as far as my opinion goes, but I’ll play along anyway. It’s really not the same type of fail, Richards beat Hamrlik and Halak to the puck then poked it past them got up and scored; there was no point that play should have been over. I guess Halak could have stayed in the net, but then Richards still has a chance at a break away assuming he uses his body correctly to shield Hamrlik off. Once Benn loses control of the puck off the half wall due to Brassard stripping him of it, the play should be over, and it takes a complete fail by the last defender Johnson for him to regain control of the puck.

Some random thoughts for so far this season:
The rookies look good early on. I fear “The Wall” however.
I’ve advocated having Jagr with Briere instead of G, simply because of more favorable zone stats and somewhat fewer minutes for those two. I’m advocating it still. I feel like a JVR/Giroux/Vorachek line would be extremely potent as well.
Kimmo Timonen is a ferocious beast. The extra time off between this season and last, while lamentable, seems to have served him well.
That is all.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.
by A Flyers Phamily on Oct 19, 2011 8:56 AM EDT reply actions
Jagr is creating tons of space for Giroux. I would not touch that line. Giroux is our best player the more space he gets the better. With all the PP time Jagr is getting 4:25 per game I can understand spotting another winger up there like maybe Hartnell one or two couple of shifts per game to give Jagr a little bit of a rest after the PP. Especially since JVR doesn’t play on that same PP unit as Giroux and Jagr.
From what I’ve seen Jagr may have been getting a bit more attention when he was in the offensive zone, but I’m wondering if that’s based solely on his reputation. I’ve also noticed he’s starting to get banged around a bit more.
I may have to go hunting some stats; perhaps my eyes are deceiving me.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

World Series: For the second straight year, the Texas Rangers have won their first two playoff rounds under the leadership of popular manager Ron Washington.
NHL: Nobody with “Washington” on their jersey ever wins two playoff rounds in the same season.
One of my favorites along with the foul pole and goal post paragraph!

DGB:
World Series: Both hands with palms down waved across the front of the body is the signal that a runner has been called safe by the umpire.
NHL: Both hands with palms down waved across the front of the body is the signal that’s it was a bad idea to try to fight Arron Asham.
Most of it was gold...
But this part made me crack up:
World Series: The Rangers have a legitimate chance to win the championship!
NHL: Not so much.

Lets wait and see after Thursday and 20 games in. But I like the attitude of the team. They came out and smashed lesser competition instead of playing down to it like last year. There were some many slow starts were the team just didn’t seem up to the game. How many times did we hear that. This year the Flyers have scored 11 1st period goals. Last year the 1st period was the lowest scoring period for the Flyers.
I think Homer is a pretty talented evaluator of young talent, who is moderately constrained by the rest of the FO. He was especially forced this season by the owner’s admonition to get the world-class goalie regardless of cost. But I do believe that he saw the growth of G and recognized that having four top-flight centers was not a sustainable way to run a team (G, Briere, Carter, Richards) and that something had to give. He pared that list to two active and two prospective top-flight centers (with the addition of Couturier and Schenn), and added several good wingers in the process – an area that the team has been lacking significantly for a few years. I am definitely surprised at how quickly and well some of the new players have done; Simmonds and Read especially. I am also interested to see what happens when (if) Briere and Hartnell get their acts together. SO – in short, I think Holmgren did a very good job overall and within the constraints he was given. We may second-guess him, we may argue that one particular move was questionable. But there’s no doubt even after just a few games that he has put together a serviceable NHL team that has potential to do well … and that is all one can ask.

evaluator of young talent,
who views the cap as a hurdle to be overcome than a constraint to be considered.
/repeating self
But the first part of Homer seems to certainly be coming true. Right now, the Carter trade in particular looks to be a win, along with the Read pickup. However, based on last night’s performance by our least favorite D-man, the Gagne trade (a direct result of the second part of Homer) looks to be even worse (who knew that was even possible).
Astaire and Rogers, G and Jagr
Hunter Pence did not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither did Carlos Beltran.
Also, are we viewing this in a Bubble? Shouldn’t it be graded in context of other GMs? I can think of 3 GMs within a 7 hour drive that have done a better job than Homer in the past 2 years.
McPhee by a mile this offseason.

Here is one example of Lavy after 2-1 lose to CLB October 25th
“It’s completely frustrating,” he said, staring straight ahead. “We got exactly what we deserved tonight. You don’t show up to compete, you don’t execute, you don’t play the game with energy and emotion, you’re going to lose all the time.”
Here Lavy after 2-1 win against the NYI Dec 5th
“It was one of those games that could put you to sleep,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. “We didn’t wake up until about seven minutes into the third period.”
Here Lavy after SO lose to the Devils Nov 27th
“We progressed and got better as the game went on,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. “We fought for a point in the third period. Hedberg was pretty good, but our guy was too.”
Wow, 3 examples of a team not playing well over the course of an 82 game season. No matter the team, or the drive of that team, or emotion, or whatever, there will be off games over a large enough sampling of games. It happens. If you want to take those and turn those in to what ever you want to believe that’s fine, I’m just a bit more cut and drive and realistic. Like I said, you love your narratives.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I selected games in the beginning of the season. And I don’t have time to put together a fucking full page well research story just to prove a point to you. I don’t get paid for this.
But against the bottom 4 teams in the East last season. OTTAWA, ATLANTA, NYI, and FLA
The Flyers were 12-5-1 GF/GA 64 – 46
If you take out the Islanders The Flyers were only 6-5-1 GF/GA 38-34 not very impressive against those 3 teams.
Also 3 of their wins against the Islanders were 1 goal games.
Do you know how well they played in any of those games? A one goal game doesn’t mean they played a bad game, or played down, it mean they only ended up with 1 more goal than the other team. If they did have a bad game, was it part of a back to back, was it bad because they took a lot of penalties, were there missing key players, etc. Did an opposing goalie steal one? Did the Flyers goalie lose one? Did the Flyers dominate the game only to not have the score reflect any good play? At the end of the day if you want to believe that team didn’t play well against the bottom dwellers, you are going to believe it.
I’ve already said I don’t care, so feel free not to look anything up.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Psst, what Don keeps trying to tell you is that yesterday Geoff already looked up the records for you. All you have to do is read his comment.
Also, taking out the Islanders is pretty weak. You don’t get to just remove the data points that work against your intended narrative. At the very least, change your narrative to “the Flyers don’t get up for non-division games against weak opponents”.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I will look at the BSH recaps and see what was said by the guys after those games.
Also PITT was 15-2-1 against those 4 teams. Making up 6 points against those opponents.
Also PITT was 15-2-1 against those 4 teams. Making up 6 points against those opponents.
So I get that you’re moving the goalposts now, but want to make sure I understand where you’re moving them to. Is your point that the Flyers should be 15-2-1 against those teams too, and going 12-5-1 is a sign of playing badly against weak competition, or is your point that even though the Flyers played well and went 12-5-1, they still lost ground because Pittsburgh was outstanding in those games?
Also, why not include Toronto, against whom the Flyers went 3-1 and Pittsburgh went 2-1-1? Why not include the sub-.500 western conference teams, against whom the Flyers went 3-1-1 and Pittsburgh went 3-2?
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
Winning and playing well are too different things. That is the point I would like to know based on my memory or selective perception they won a lot of those games without playing all that well especially at the start and the 1st periods. I have to due the research to find it out and the BSH recaps were Travis or would point this out as that is the most objective source of cap coverage I know of. I will put it together in a fan post or something I would will be objective and if the recaps prove my opinion wrong the Fanpost will reflect that. It is not about being right it is about getting it right.
Save yourself the trouble:
1. I don’t care.
2. last year’s team is pretty damn similar to the team the year before, so then you’ll get asked for those 2.
3. Richards and Carter were the big changes, so you’ll be asked for every year against the worst X teams that particular year
4. I still won’t care.
5. I doubt you’ll do the research to pull all the context necessary, nor would I expect you to

List me the subpar teams and I will go back to the recaps against those teams and find that narrative. The Flyers started slow is many games last season especially against the subpar teams and didn’t get there shit in gear until the 2nd period where the would turn the whole thing around. They were +31 in goal scoring in the 2nd period.
I’m not your maid, and you could easily search yourself. But since I don’t have much faith in your competence since he was responding to you yesterday, here you go.
And clearly not having a wide scoring margin until the 2nd period clearly means a team doesn’t have their shit in gear in the first. Obviously. Hell you can insert any comment you want anywhere. The Flyers didn’t have a strong 2nd period last night: “yeah the team seems to lose focus with a lead, and become disinterested. Once Ottawa scored that 1st goal, that got going again, that was reassuring.” I mean it’s just BS answers to give the media something to write about. The fact is, every game isn’t going to be great. And what is sometimes perceived as a lack of effort might be the other team just simply executing better at times, who knows. We’ll all write whatever story lines we want in our heads. Mine is, they’re human beings, there will be an ebb and flow to every game and to every season.

I just want a list of what you would call subpar teams I don’t want to hear you bitching about my list. Then I would look it up.

Personally, I think Jagr has been outstanding. He is making moves that open up the ice for everyone. When he touches the puck he looks like a force to be reckoned with. I wasn’t excited when we signed him, but I’ve been converted.
Its seems that when he first have the puck, nobody can take it from him along side the boards.

The PD article about Rick Rypien was both interesting and sad. I agree that “brotherhood” is overlooked in the locker room but one of the most important aspects. Also, it’s sad when a tragedy occurs and that sparks change, but unfortunately it’s a recurring theme.

I feel lost suddenly… BPIH?
My son was born in Ottawa (Go Senators!) to a Father (Go Flyers!) and a Mother (Go Canucks!) who's families root for two different hockey teams (Go Habs!)(Go Bruins!) Little Maxwell is going to have such a confusing life.
is it bad that my mind immediatly now jumps to BestProspectInHockeysOffensiveZone?

Well Harry-Z was shortlived
The Flyers have announced that they have recalled forward Brayden Schenn and loaned forwards Zac Rinaldo and Harry Zolnierczyk to the Phantoms
Very interesting.

Anyone who wanted Vokoun is clueless.

Oh and Peanut Butter Shelley Time right? He’s off suspension which makes Rinaldo’s move easy.

What are the odds that Briere gets bumped to the wing so that both Cooter & Schenn can play center & get decent minutes?
And naturally, as I type this I get a text from the Skate Zone that says Cooter – Talbot – Nodl are skating as a line in practice.
Eww. Cooter on the 4th line? And NOT as the center at least? I dunno that I like that.

I have no problem with Rinaldo getting sent down, but was it really pressing for Schenn to be brought up right now? Sure I know he was the center piece of the Richards trade, but 20-25 games in the AHL would not have hurt him.
