One year of failure produced such panic that we’ve been on a rollercoaster every season for half a decade furiously trying to forget it ever happened. If anything can be said, it’s that this regime shows a lack of consistency in key points but miraculously maintains the status quo.
That’s a very interesting take. And I think I may agree with it. Imagine what this team could’ve looked like having drafted Drew Doughty or Steven Stamkos the year after JVR? We just couldn’t sit down and rebuild for a couple of years…of course everything would be different then. No Pronger for example

Yep, I pretty much feel the same way. When you think of the Flyers, consistency is not a word that comes to mind. I think panic pretty much sums them up nicely.
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.

making the playoffs 16 out of 18 years that I have been following the Flyers since I was 12 years old seems pretty consistent to me
Vokoun is off to his best start since 2005-2006, and all for the paltry sum of 1.5 mil.
Lovely.

Kind of expected this. Then again, Varly/Neuvirth put up strong numbers and Washington does well every year. The true test for Vokoun is what he’ll do in the playoffs. That trade/signing shouldn’t even be analyzed until the playoffs come around

You think so?
Short of the worst case scenario playing out for the Caps(Vokoun giving up 5 a game in the playoffs) and the best case scenario playing out for the Flyers(Bryz single-handedly winning a cup) then the signing by Washington will always be the better move. If for any reason other than, Vokoun is a 1 year deal, Bryz is not.

I agree. I wanted a Vokoun/Bob tandem so bad.

I’m not saying that the Flyers made the better move. The Caps made the better move, simply because they aren’t pay 7.67 million for a marginal upgrade goaltending wise, while the Flyers are paying out the asshole for a marginal upgrade goaltending wise.
Dream scenario:
Varly/Bob tandem, trading whichever one you feel you can get the best value for at the end of the season. Play the one who is on the hot streak

Vokoun doesn’t sign with us, he only signed cheap because the teams looking for a goalie already got one.
Very true, but I don’t think he gets 9 years and $51 million either.

Bud in TN (I think it was him) had the right answer.
The Flyers should’ve also traded for Vokoun’s rights, and told both of them “one of you is going to sign a reasonable deal with us before the end of June, and the other one is going to hit the very dry UFA market on July 1.”
Even if they ended up with the same goalie, they probably could’ve done so at a substantially cheaper price.

Hunter Pence did not guarantee a WS, but, then, neither did Carlos Beltran.
And there is no way the Flyers should have paid 9 years, $51mil in that market; they basically bid against themselves. There a very large gap of reasonable numbers and term between what Vokoun and Bryz signed for, but the Flyers weren’t allowed ot explore that because Eddy needed his new toy.

Vokoun doesn’t sign with us because the Flyers screwed themselves by overpaying for Bryz. If they had been patient they had as much of a chance to sign Vokoun as anyone else.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
I’m actually surprised we didn’t get Vokoun at the deadline last year when Tallon was shopping him around (and I did want him then.) Knowing how he had such a hankering for Versteeg from the Chicago days I think we could’ve gotten a deal done with those two (I don’t know how the cap space would’ve worked though.)
In Bryz’s defense on his play thus far there have been too many redirections off of sticks in the lanes by our D (and not enough tying up of opponents sticks.) I mean when it’s a redirect like he’s been seeing all he can do is hope he has as much of the net covered as possible. That’s one thing I really noticed with Wash and Vokoun when they were here. He saw nearly every shot clean and there wasn’t nearly as much screening of him as there was of Bryz.
Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

How do you figure?
Vokoun isn’t just better than Bryzgalov this year. He’s better than him period.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Agreed.
Since the lockout: Vokoun ESS% .932 vs Bryzgalov .926. Vokoun overall Sv% .922 vs Bryzgalov .916.
Their performance over the last six years is enough to say Vokoun is better (though factoring in age, they probably cross over in a year or two). Their performance thus far this year is not the reason to regret the off-season moves; it’s just the salt in the wounds.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I think FLA and NSH routinely overcount shots, so I take Vokoun’s ESS% with a grain of salt. Plus, .926 is nothing to sneeze at.
Caps and Vokoun are on a hot streak, which is nice, but everyone has them from time to time. Let’s wait a couple months before we start coming to any conclusions about the relative merits of the two ’tenders.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Yeah, don’t get me wrong, Bryzgalov’s a good goalie.
I hate shot overcounting, mostly because I can never remember which rinks are known to be skewed, and so I am always prone to this issue. Vokoun’s total save percentage might suggest a small bias, but even on the road it’s clearly higher than Bryzgalov’s .916:
2010-11: .926 road, .917 home
2009-10: .927 road, .923 home
2008-09: .915 road, .933 home
2007-08: .916 road, .921 home
2006-07: .926 road, .915 home
2005-06: .905 road, .931 home

Oops, forgot to add my last point: even a couple of months is a small sample for a goalie. Which is why my position is “six years of data say Vokoun is better, and any current data is just salt in the wounds.”
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
So after the 1st 4 games where everyone says Brzy is playing great worth every penny and better than Vokuon and it is small sample size just wait. Yet two games later the sample size is large enough to post articles linking to the Washington Post to support your arguments and basically saying I TOLD YOU SO. You can’t have it both ways.
So after the 1st 4 games where everyone says Brzy is playing great worth every penny and better than Vokuon
Who is everyone?
I definitely didn’t say that. In fact, I have been vocal about the mistake that was his signing from day one.
I’m not having it both ways, I was against it then and I am against it still.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
The Masthead tempered the excitement of those who were going overboard when Brzy played so well the 1st 4 games and rightfully so especially those who were gloating about the Vokoun’s poor opener. Yet today we have a link to a Washington Post article about the goalie of the Washington Capitals. I really don’t see what that has anything to do with the Flyers in anyway or even NHL hockey as a whole. Why not link to LA TIMES Jonathan Quick article here in the FlyBy or the Buffalo Times Ryan Miller piece here.
They are both the same BS Fluff pieces were criticize the MSM for writing in the 1st place especially after only 8 games of the god damn season. But today Geoff has the Vokoun Post article in the Fucking FLY BY and is being a dick with a passive I TOLD YOU SO after only seven games. WE get the FLYERS over paid for Brzy just put in the god damn tagline or chance the name of the website to overpaidgoaliehockey.com I don’t give a shit. It is just annoying and frankly quite aggravating to have to constantly harp on the same damn thing especially during the season.
We get it. The BRZY signing was horrendous and Caps are so much better for signing Vokuon who is by far the superior goalie since his days playing for the Wheeling Thunderbirds of the ECHL. Time to move on and talk about something else. I care as much about Vokuon as I do any other damn goalie in the NHL who doesn’t player for the Flyers and that is zero. The points have been made over and over again back in August nothing else needs to said about this especially in the FlyBy headlines.
First of all, The Masthead tempered excitement of those going overboard over anybody through 4 games.
Why not link to them? Because the Flyers were never going to get Quick or Miller. But the Flyers could have – should have – gotten Vokoun.
Further, if Vokoun is as relevant as Quick, why did Carchidi and Isaac talk about Vokoun’s first start of the year? Why did Flyers fans use Vokoun’s first start to show the team made the right call?
But mostly, Chris, calm the fuck down. If it’s so annoying and aggravating, who’s the one harping on it? You know how easy it is to just ignore? You’re the one who flipped out.

I rate this 30% fair.
You’re right that it would be perpetrating the same sin we call the MSM out for if we ignored the Vokoun/Bryz comparison when Bryz started better and then brought it up when Vokoun took the lead.
However, that’s not what happened here. Geoff recognized that the Vokoun/Bryzgalov comparison (unlike Quick or Miller) is a running storyline for the season and has consistently linked to it from the beginning. He linked to a story about Vokoun’s bad first game. He linked to a subsequent story about Vokoun getting hot after that game.
And Geoff didn’t exactly harp on it; in each case (including today’s), he provided the link without editorializing — or even commenting — on the choice between the goalies.

P.S. I’m a little concerned about your suggestion that he link to the LA TIMES in his FLY BY articles, that he is saying I TOLD YOU SO about the FLYERS overpaying for BRZY. You might be developing a condition that can be quite serious; I recommend you see someone about it immediately.

I’m actually agreeing with some of what you say here chris. Did we overpay for Bryz given the market and the fact that a goalie could’ve been had with better numbers for less money? Probably. Will I care that we overpaid for Bryz if we win a Stanley Cup with him in net? Probably not.
I think either way we’ll have articles about Vokoun the entire season just based on him being the other high profile netminder that was available this offseason. He’s pretty much in our kitchen now that he plays for a team we will have to probably go through to get to where we want to go.

Going from an article about Vokoun’s good start to saying “6 games = Bryz SUCKS, I TOLD YOU SO” is a big jump. I don’t see where Geoff is doing what you’re accusing him of doing. At all. You’re massively exaggerating and reading into things.

That didn’t come across clearly at all. Lanci, in your comment, you take one of the links Geoff posted and, because of that link alone, accuse Geoff of saying that Bryz sucks after only 6 games. To me, that’s a hell of a jump. I don’t think he’s saying that. If he is, then you’re right, it’s still a small sample size and not a fair judgement. But I don’t think he’s saying that. And Vokoun’s contract is still better, regardless.

And the sky is blue here is a link.
Also I am not implying Geoff thinks or ever said Brzy sucks, what I am reading into look read this story on how good Vokoun is I TOLD YOU SO if we only had Vokoun. Honestly if the Flyers would just get their collective heads out of there asses with the D coverage we wouldn’t have lost that last game to the Blues and not have gotten beaten so bad by the Caps. The mistakes that were made were bush league pee wee hockey crap very soft and lazy play.
Also I am not implying Geoff thinks or ever said Brzy sucks, what I am reading into look read this story on how good Vokoun is I TOLD YOU SO if we only had Vokoun.
It took me a while to parse this sentence, but I still say you’re reading into it too much. “Bryz sucks” was too strong of wording on my part, but you’re still jumping to the conclusion that Geoff is saying “Vokoun>Bryz” just because he posted that link, and I still think that’s a big jump.

Agreed. Especially since, as I noted above, he also posted a link to a story about Vokoun’s terrible first game.

This is definitely something I would say, and something I almost certainly will say, but it’s not something I have said. It’s absolutely far too soon to make any judgment based on results whatsoever.
In case you haven’t noticed – and I’m sure most people haven’t – my biggest problem this season has been media and fan narratives. The fact that the media and fans jumped on Vokoun’s first start – which Eric has reminded everyone I linked to – as proof that the Flyers made the right call is still infuriating.
So I will continue bashing the narrative in my subtle way. You read into it me saying “I TOLD YOU SO”, but what I’m really saying is “Stop constructing a narrative to fit your preconceived biases and wait for more information before forming an opinion.”

Cameras didn’t catch Chris Pronger(notes) grinning like a proud father. Which we assume he was.
D’Agostini got the last laugh, icing the game with a power-play goal just 1:06 after Matt Carle(notes) cut the Blues’ lead to two goals in the third period
And that’s where the game changed IMO, and where the Flyers are biting off their own arm. Taking a penalty after getting within 1 goal in the 3rd period.

Maybe it’s because I have bias, or simply looking to confirm what I believe, but how is a cross-check to a defenseman equate in the Flyers having a better chance at getting a goal? Goalie interference I can believe, but I just don’t see a cross-check making the puck going in the net.
Maybe I’m missing something here.

Oh, I didn’t mean they cross-checked a Blue to try and make the puck go in. I apologize.
I meant: They didn’t score, then take a penalty. Nobody on the ice was aware that the puck was in, so they took a penalty, then found out they were within one.
I differentiate between scoring to bring the game within one goal, then the next shift taking a penalty and what happened Saturday.

Yeah, I got an instant ticket off of Stubhub for the Caps game, and printed it out. Worked like a charm. I walked up to the gate, they scanned it just like an actual ticket, and then I was in. No problem at all. Also, the ticket price was dropped to $13 since it was close to game time. I may never get tickets any other way again. It was great. Just a shame the game sucked ass.
Use the Flyers Market Place. When you sell your tickets on there, they void the ones sent to you, and they print ones for the buyers. It’s how I sell tickets when friends can’t purchase them, and it works very well.

Nope. Jenn picked the date we are getting married (as he said, Jenn and the honeymoon/wedding better damn well trump the Flyers if I want to slive the rest of my life in good health). The honeymoon is a dream trip though to be honest. I was nervous when we set everything up because I expected the team to do very well, but was okay with it because I’d be back for the Finals. Once they blew it up though, I felt a lot safer about not missing much though. I don’t see this team making much of a run unless they get some great bounces in the small sample size tournie called the playoffs.

My vacations have been during the playoffs for the past couple of years in a row. And I catch shit for it every year from my friends who are into hockey. But I’m in grad school and my wife teaches college classes, so the only time we can go is between semesters. Oh well. Once I graduate, it’ll get a lot easier.

What the hell, people? I go away for a long weekend and we drop two games and get lit up for 9 goals against? Clearly I’m not allowed to go anywhere from now until mid-June. (Which I don’t think I am, actually…) Either that or Rinaldo was the bat-shit-crazy-glue that held the team together for the first five games.
I can’t help but wonder, has anyone in the MSM said the words “goalie controversy” yet? I don’t think there is one, I just wonder how long it takes for them to go there. :-p

That hit by Read on the bench was really funny. The opponents bench is on the far end side of the ice from where we sit so we didn’t see it at first. Then we heard some scattered laughs coming from that end and they replayed it up on the Jumbotron and the whole building burst out laughing.

I have a good balance of C/LW/RW at the moment, so I feel like I should drop another C for him, but I don’t know which. At the moment, I think Richards is my lowest-performing center, but he’d get snatched up if I dropped him, so I won’t do that. Dropping a C for Read would also give me 4 Flyers, and I don’t like to lean too hard on any one team. My 3 current Flyers are JVR, Voracek and Simmonds. JVR also hasn’t done much yet, but he’d get snatched up and I know he’ll start lighting the lamp soon. Perhaps Voracek for Read wouldn’t be a bad move, except it’d make me deep at C and thin at RW. We’ll see.

"I think there is virtue in pissing off idiots." - Fehr and Balanced
At least on Yahoo, Read counts as a C/RW, so he wouldn’t reduce your depth at RW. I have a hilarious situation where of my 9 forwards, 5 qualify as LW, 4 qualify as C, and 5 qualify as RW:
C – Luke Adam
LW – Matt Cooke, Milan Lucic
RW – Teemu Selanne
C/LW – Vinny Prospal
C/RW – Danny Briere, Matt Read
LW/RW – Dustin Brown, Rick Nash
Bob.
Looking forward to tonight’s game. I see it being high scoring, maybe 5-4. Just hope we’re on the right side of the result and that the performance is better than previous games.
Just a little correction. We don’t play Buffalo this week! Our remaining games this month are Tor, @Mon, Win and Car. I think thats favorable(just my opinion) and would like to see us get at least two probably three wins.

So getting a new start with a new team means you get new communication skills? This seems odd to me, since the problem was between Bryz and Coburn, not Bryz and Jeff Reese.

Reese knows the commands since he taught BOB. All the D should use the same commands universal it is not efficient for each defender and the goalie to have there own language.

Are you forgetting the whole thing last year where Timonen mouthed off to the press about not knowing what Bob was going to do with the puck?

So there’s different commands for each team/goalie coach? How many ways do you need to say “Leave it” or “I got it”?
It was an ugly communication error, but I think the players would be better served to speak to one another about it and fix it that way.

They're just getting to this now?
The very first day I played on a team with a coach he skated up to me:
C: So are you a puck-handler or are you my girlfriend?
M: I’m a goalie.
C: Good I was going to ask you why you had all that shit on. So are you a puck-handler?
M: Not really.
C: Then you’re my girlfriend. You’re going to talk. You’re going to be bossy and tell everyone here what to do.
M: Yes sweetie.
C: That’s Coach sweetie to you. You are going to use one of two words every time the puck gets sent in the zone. Either “Mine” or “Yours” “Mine” means you are playing it. “Yours” means you are either leaving it alone or setting it up for your teammate when the puck comes to you. Do you understand?
M: Yes.
C: You will do this even if it appears obvious what you are doing with the puck. I just talked to your defensemen. Think of them as large semi-bright dogs. They need auditory reinforcement. Do you understand?
M: Yes.
C: You can give your defensemen any other instructions you see fit. Work it out with them. Stick with short words. And your first word is always “mine” or “yours” or you’re gonna wish you were my girlfriend because then I’d have to buy you dinner first.
Oh, and my first team was not an NHL team that is paying me more than $50 million.

With guys like Konopka still out there, I could just F with you during our weekly matchups. It’s easier to pick up PIMs at any point than it is to pick up goal scorers. Funny I had a different strategy and still managed to grab good goalies. I just go for PPG players that were injured last season and drop in the rankings accordingly.

You could go with Konopka, but you’d be betting on him to have a high PIM night. Also, looking at your centers, there’s no way you’d take the kono bet unless one of your guys are off

I wouldn’t do it because you have guys like Horton and Bieksa already above 25% of their PIM output of last year and we’re only 3 weeks in to the season. You’re missing 9.4 minutes from McQuaid and you’re actually ahead 5.4 minutes from Boyle at this point. So net is 4 minutes that you are actually missing at this point. And you are ahead on Bieksa and Horton a combined 20.9 minutes. So yeah, not really missing much there. What you should have called me on is not using their career totals. If you go by career totals you are ~10 ahead on Bieksa, ~14 ahead on Horton, ~5 ahead on Boyle, and ~9 behind on McQuaid (rounding down where you are ahead, and up where you are behind). So you are roughly 20 minutes ahead from those 4. But whatever, you still have a better PIMs team than I do, just pointing out why I’m fine hoping some of those guys like McQuaid don’t see minutes when I play you.
