I wanted them to get Pronger some rest but not like this. Hopefully he will be fine.
Good to see hartnell get some success to get his season rolling along.

Feeling nervous about Walker being pressed into the lineup after his uninspiring start and Pronger’s injury. Perhaps cap problems will necessitate that Walker be sent down to ADK and Gus recalled in his place?
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Sending Walker down would allow them to call up Gus and Marshall, I believe (though there are conflicting reports on how much Schenn’s cap hit is now, and 50k here or there could make this not work).
That two-for-one is the only reason I’d see Walker being sent down right now. And if they do it, I think Gus and Marshall might be stuck in the NHL all year (with one not getting any playing time unless Lilja gets benched), because recalling Walker would risk having him claimed on re-entry waivers and really blowing things up.

So with Pronger out for the next few weeks will Gus get called up and given a serious look or are we stuck with the skating train wreck that is Matt Walker?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Wonderful. And yet again the Flyers are plagued by their own cap mismanagement.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

They have 7 Defenseman I don’t understand why this is a cap problem. Walker isn’t great but he is the 7th D-Man and will play when on the 6 gets hurt. This is a Walker problem not a cap problem.
Pronger......
I would be willing to bet my pay check that if that same play happen the other way around with a Flyer “high-sticking” someone and then injuring them a penalty would have been called.
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.
I’d take that bet 100% of the time and you’d make me a rich man.

No, it was a follow through on a shot and the stick deflected up off of Pronger’s stick. It’s clean, just an extremely unfortunate accident.

I am not arguing if it was clean or not I was simply saying that it would not have been called clean if a Flyer was the person doing the stick swinging.

1. I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that there is a limit to the number of players a team can place on LTIR. Is there any truth to that? Either way I think the Flyers try to avoid putting Pronger there, hoping (praying) he misses less than 10 games.
2. With 192k in LTIR space left, I think Walker has to get assigned to ADK, in favor of Gus and random defenseman #7. Homer says “we have players” but pretty much refused to answer the roster question. I guess we’ll know come Thursday.
There are other ways to make cap space. They have a pretty expensive fourth line right now, and some much cheaper options in the AHL…

So … if Shelley gets dumped (and his stock has never been higher, as he looked pretty darn good last night) and Sestito comes up instead, can they afford to bring up Gus?
Capgeek is still showing Schenn’s full salary of $3m+, and also has Lappy still on the active roster. The other related variable is (of course) Cooter – if he’s returned to the minors, that’s $1.375 in cap space immediately. What is Betts’ status at the moment – can he take over the 4th line center spot from Cooter or not?

18 Year Old Rookies
Which I think leaves Couturier, Nugent-Hopkins, Landeskog, Zibanejad, and Larsson.
…with 8 games played, is Cooter:
- on the block?
- to be given a big role next game to see if he can handle better than 4th line minutes?
Really he seems like the odd man out now more than ever. Nugent-Hopkins and Landeskog seem like point-per-game locks so far this season, Zibanejad is on a terrible team, and Larsson is a Devil… (o.k. so I have no point on that last one…) Couturier seems to be the only one left playing significant 4th line/PK style minutes. (Not that I know where he sits in terms of being sheltered.)
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.

Larsson was hailed as the most NHL ready in the draft and he is on a team that needs him. I’ve seen a few games and he does look impressive for this age.

I read something that said Larsson is already the best NJD defenseman this year. I haven’t watched a single NJD game, but if that’s the case (and their D was dreadful last year) I’d expect him to stay up full time.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Yeah, and Landeskog has been a beast and Nugent-Hopkins is playing what, top line?
One of these things is not like the other 18 year olds, and its Couturier.

I thought that line last night with him, Shelley and Talbot was really, really good. They brought a lot of energy and spent some time in the offensive zone. I was really happy with their play. Even the penalty they called on Shelley I thought was not his fault.
Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

You do realize the 4th line has been really good so far. Talbot Cooter are leading the team in CORSI despite a horrendous sub 30% Offensive Zone Start percentage. Cooter is playing the same bad positions Betts was getting twice as much TOI and leading the team is ranked 1st on the team in CORSI instead of being ranked dead last. The 4th line is a position of strength instead of a horrendous weakness like it was last year.
Which brings back the debate of if we want Cooter to be a good to great 4th line center in 11-12 or a good to great 1st/2nd line center in 14-15?
Is what value he adds right now worth a year of garunteed contract?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jeff Carter started out as a defensive centerman in the NHL, taking 4th and some 3rd line minutes. He turned out OK, I guess.

Some people believe he’ll develop better playing 25-30 minutes in juniors, some believe he’ll develop better playing 8-10 minutes in the NHL. I honestly don’t know, and I don’t think any of us do.
But the point is that he’ll be paid $1.4M in ‘12-13, ’13-14, and either ’11-12 or ’14-15. And he’ll provide a lot more value on that salary in ’14-15 as a 1C/2C entering his prime than in ’11-12 as a rookie 4C.

Yeah, I hold off on talking about the RFA part because we don’t know what the CBA will look like when he signs his next deal, but this may be another benefit to the slide.
Or it might be a wash — maybe the next CBA will just have players hitting UFA at a fixed age regardless of years of service, in which case everything after that ’14-15 season would be the same.
@BSH_EricT

True. The money is one thing; my desire to see him stick with the team is perhaps in opposition but not unjustified in terms of player development and his play to date. I’ll concede the contractual considerations.

Yup. Honestly, I think both sides are defensible, but my personal belief is that if he can face top competition as a 3C, he’s adding enough value this year that I’d go ahead and burn the ELC, but if he’s going to be facing weak competition with Shelley on a wing then I don’t think he’ll be able to add enough value there.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I think he can face that competition 3C and will eventually there just isn’t room for me right now until someone get hurt the fact that he can’t called back up once sent to Juniors is what kills it for me. He provides a valuable depth asset down the middle.
Also from a people perspective and a management perspective you told this kid coming he if you play well you can make the team. Then you stack the deck against him putting him in tough situations kill penalties etc for the entire time he was here and he still succeeds and surpasses expectations how can you justify sending him back. It just wouldn’t seem fair or send the right kind of message and set an awful precedent to the others youngsters come next training camp.
Three things:
1) When you say “I think he can face that [top] competition”, that’s a hope that’s not based on evidence. He has faced very weak competition thus far. It’s very rare for a player of his age to face top competition. It’s much safer to assume he can’t/won’t at this point.
2) When you say “there just isn’t room … right now”, that’s an admission that the team has better options than him. You’re burning an awful lot of future value just to get a marginal boost on the fourth line and an insurance policy against an injury to a top center.
3) When you say “you told this kid coming he[re] ‘of you play well, you can make the team’”, you’re assuming something that you don’t know. The team could — and should — have told him all along that the cap is tight and the roster is deep and they hope to find space for him but can’t make any promises. I don’t know why you’d assume they did otherwise — if they did, then that was the people and management failure.

my own selfish self has this to say on the subject of development.
I would rather not see someone develop into a superstar and then play half or more of his career on another team due to us sucking at Asset management and cap considerations.
Hell I have Couturier on my Fantasy team at the moment and I’m pushing for him to drop back to the Q/go back to the World Junior Tournament for the year…
…and like I said somewhere else, imagine having him centering JVR and someone like Simmonds in a couple years… we haven’t had a big dominating line with scoring touch in at least a few seasons.
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.
by DLJr on Oct 19, 2011 1:15 PM EDT
Jeff Carter was also past the option of being able to slide when he came to the NHL, so he was going to use a year of his ELC whether it was in the NHL or AHL regardless; apples to oranges. It’s not about development, the debate is about asset management. Hope that clears it up.

I’d be fine with him staying if 1. I thought the Flyers were true contenders this year, and/or 2. He was in a role that was more meaningful to the team. He clearly has does nothing that warrants him being sent back, rather it’s the way he is being used and the way the team is currently constructed to make a run at a SC appearance this year. I just want to keep the whole he will develop fine here out of the asset management debate as that isn’t the main issue there.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Fair points, I suppose. I guess I could see how being 4th line center could prevent ‘Briere-ness’ in a young star-quality center, but you’re quite correct about the asset management being wholly divested from the player development in this instance.
Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!
by MaximumTalbot on Oct 25, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I think he’d be fine in that role and if I thought the Flyers could make a serious run without large amounts of luck beyond the normal run being necessary, I would be more for keeping him, even if it was just as a 4C. Either way, whether it’s with the Flyers this year or in the Q, I think he’ll develop just fine. My default preference is to play another year in Juniors because of a combination of the team I support’s preference to being at the absolute cap ceiling every year and the slide rule.
But I definitely see the where everyone who is on the Couturier has earned a spot side of the fence is coming from, it’s just IMO, there wasn’t anything he could do personally to earn a spot, so I was always looking at it differently.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
it’s just IMO, there wasn’t anything he could do personally to earn a spot, so I was always looking at it differently.
But that is not what the organization told him and all the others coming in hence you have to bite the bullet to be fair.
Why? Why would you have to bite the bullet?

If you were in sales and you boss gives you a goal and tells you if you meet that loft goal you will get a 5K bonus. You meet that goal and actually exceed it. When your paycheck comes and you don’t get the bonus you were promised and your boss comes up with a lame excuse how would that make you feel? How would that look to the other members of your sales team?
I know were a fans we crunch that numbers to these players are people this is a way of life a job and you have to be honest with your employees and award not punish effort and hard work.
You don’t have to reward hard work that isn’t good enough, or that doesn’t improve your financial standing. In most cases, that employee would be substandard, and encouraged to get better at his job or lose it. In the very specialized case of athletes, where physical development can be semi-reliably projected, you sometimes take a loss up front, prematurely rewarding players for better value later/to retain their rights.
This clearly isn’t such a case, and it’s certainly not a case analogous to your example. No clear benchmark was set, no promise was extended, and the nature of his contract is such that he is inherently and necessarily movable for business reasons. He played fine, but if the team determines that they are better this year—financially, on-ice, etc.—with someone else in that spot, or his development requires that he be sent down, then they aren’t breaking any obligations—contractual, implied, or otherwise.

…and why I have been harping on the others from his draft class still in the NHL. N-Hopkins is seeing 1st/2nd line time and production.
Landeskog is seeing 2nd/3rd and producing at 1st/2nd.
Larsson is being called the Devils best defenseman (apparently)
and Zibanejad is playing up and down the lineup on a horrible Senators team.
which is the gripe with keeping a guy up in the NHL you can only slot into a 4C. (unless theres some issues with Briere or something we don’t know about, like bad knees)

You mean like having as many points through 9 games as Matt Read, yet having seven times more penalty minutes (14)? Or making $3.2 million more than Jagr, but having 2 less points? Or having a CorsiRel of -3.2, while Simmonds has a +4.8?

it is WAY too early in Schenn and Couturier’s career to judge who will be a more dominant center in the NHL. As for Giroux, he could become the next Forsberg, or he could even out where he is now. If he stayed exactly as he is now I would rank him as an extream upper talent 2C, but not an elite 1C.

The 4th line is a position of strength instead of a horrendous weakness like it was last year.
You’re attributing that to replacing Betts with Couturier. I would attribute it to replacing Shelley with Talbot.
If Shelley continues to dress, the fourth line will be a weakness. If he doesn’t, it won’t. Couturier is a small part of that.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
Shelley isn’t the reason his line can’t be an average first line, but I think it’s possible he’s the reason they can’t form an average fourth line, especially when it seem that they are above average whenever they are on the ice without him.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
How is it unfair?
Everywhere Shelley has gone, his line has faced the absolute worst competition and had terrible results. Every year. He’s among the bottom few players in the NHL in cumulative competition faced over the last four years and has consistently gotten beaten by those players.
Why wouldn’t you assume that the fourth line suddenly facing weaker competition and getting beaten by them last year — after Betts led a Shelley-free line to much better results the previous year — is the result of Shelley being added to the line? Why would you assume that Couturier can suddenly become the first person in the history of ever to lead Shelley to great success?

Toronto needs to go back to school to learn how to control the sticks. It wasn’t just the Pronger incident…they were really dangerous on the ice last night. That Pronger injury happened literally right in front of us but no one saw it because everyone was looking at the puck go up into the netting above the glass. I think it’s inexcusable with two officials on the ice that one didn’t watch the follow through.

The whistle for the play to be over was pretty much immediate, and he got himself right off the ice. It’s pretty hard to say the officials wouldn’t have blown it dead if it stayed in play., especially since the official on the goal line skated immediately over to Pronger and assisted him to the bench. Between contact and the time it took for Pronger and the official to get to the Flyers bench, 10 seconds went by; so I’m confused by your statement.

It was immediate though, both the official and Pronger’s (obviously) reactions were immediate. The fans, yeah, well, don’t get me started on fans this season.

The main point (to get back to it) was I thought Toronto really was poor at controlling the sticks all night. That Bob poke through the mask bugged me too. It just seemed like they really didn’t do a good job controlling themselves around the rink (I’d put Danny in that group on our side. I know he’s prone to penalties but they seem like they’re getting even more frequent.)
Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

It just looked really scary when it happened (to the point where I would’ve wanted play stopped immediately.) I think I would’ve been better served to watch the puck and not watch the stick clip Pronger. Then it wouldn’t have felt like time stopped watching the Captain drop in agony to the ice and then get up and skate to the bench. It’s just frustrating.
Thanks a lot Select-A-Seat! Now I'm in 122!

I can add on a good note a puck went up and over into the crowd into 123 and the guy sitting in row 1 next to the Flyers bench gave the puck to a young kid sitting in the aisle seat between 122 and 123. This kid was really, really excited to get that puck. I mean he looked like he was going to pass out. It was a nice gesture.

Look at the video.
Contact at 3 seconds.
Whistle blown and eye contact with a downed Pronger at 4 seconds.
Official arrives next to Pronger as he gets up immediate at 7 seconds.
Official and Pronger arrive at Jim McCrossin in front of bench at 13 seconds.
I think what you saw and the actual events don’t mesh. Pronger got himself off the ice on his own immediately, he didn’t give anyone else much of a chance.

Yep it seemed longer to me than that. I think because I never took my eyes off of him getting hit with the stick so it seemed like an eternity to me. Most people around had no idea he was even injured until I yelled out.

Every team shoots like that, it’s just a freak accident. And it looks like Grabo’s stick rides up Pronger’s stick. Just an unfortunate accident.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Yep I didn’t think it was a penalty. Just a really scary incident. Of course Toronto as a whole last night was really poor in most areas with regards to how they controlled their stick (putting aside the Pronger incident.)

They really seemed out of sorts in their own zone. There was a lot of chasing by the Leafs and we really were able to keep offensive pressure on them throughout. Neither one of their goals were a result of sustained pressure and there was a good amount of time in the 2nd period where even our 4th line was sustaining in the offensive zone.
I was thoroughly satisfied with the effort vs Saturday against St. Louis where it seemed they couldn’t make one clean tape to tape pass when coming into the attacking zone.

Hey, remember the big debate about whether Hartnell was declining?
He is now on a 52-point pace, which would surpass last year’s 49 as the second-best of his career. Which is not to say that the 8-game sample is any more meaningful than the 7-game sample, but that the rapid change illustrates why we should ignore the current season altogether and hesitate to declare someone to be falling apart immediately following the second-best point total of their career.

Depends on how one defines ‘playing well’. If it is purely about points over a season, you are correct. If it encompasses more things, like an ability to skate, skill with passing the puck (to players on your team, that is), some defensive sense on the ice, limited liability with penalties, or even being a role model for other players – Hartnell sucks.
He stands in front of the net and lets pucks bounce off him, and he contributes to Locks Of Love. That’s it – for $4+ million a season you get 0.6 PPG and nothing else. That’s $85, 365 per point. Simon Gagne had 524 points in 664 games (0.79 PPG) so he cost $81,043 per point, and he brought defensive play, passing, leadership, ….

Geoff, I love that you post your power ranking methodology, and that it’s at least an attempt at an objective quantification. I have a couple questions, though.
Why the focus on ES goal ratio? If Corsi is a better indicator than goals scored, shouldn’t you be looking at ES Corsi? I also understand why there is a focus on ES, but I don’t think special teams can be discounted completely. I haven’t looked at it (and I don’t really even know how you’d begin to analyze it) but I think that special teams play has an impact on the game that is disproportionate to the amount of time spent on specials teams. So let’s say special teams is only about 1/5 of the game, I think the impact is larger than that. I suspect you disagree with that claim, but that’s my gut reaction.
Obviously, this is all speculation.
Why the focus on ES goal ratio?
Because the NHL publishes it after every game. And nobody publishes ES Corsi after every game.
So let’s say special teams is only about 1/5 of the game, I think the impact is larger than that.
Not to quantify it, but I admit special teams are an important part of the game. But how would I quantify the frequency teams are on special teams? How would I weight that appropriately in the method?
Basically, I hate power rankings. A lot. But people love them, so I was asked to do them. If I’m going to do power rankings, I’m going to do it objectively, and I’m going to make it simple to do.
With the NHL’s official site, it’s really easy to come up with a formula that attempts to show the best team at 5-on-5 in regulation. I’ll take it and move on. :)

Does anybody know the last time, if ever, a goalie was called for diving? I know they are supposed to “sell” the call when they get touched but last night Gustavsson practically jumped out of the arena when his OWN GUY touched him. It’s almost as bad as punters in the NFL.

That was the call on Shelley right? That was ridiculous. Bob gets a stick through his mask and they let it go but a Leafs player bumps Gustavsson and he acts like he got hit by sniper fire (and it’s Shelley’s fault.) I was on the other side of the rink so I don’t know if Shelley did something else but if it was for Gustvasson’s reaction then that’s terrible.

thanks for sharing. I may seem prudish but i find it depressing that when you do a search for images of almost any attractive female celebrity there are a lot of pics in which they have next to nothing on. It doesn’t matter if they’re really smart or talented or accomplished. I understand why it is so but it still feels whorish to me. As women continue to approach men in pay and rank and outpace them in education it will be interesting to see if this shifts. Guy’s urges won’t change, of course, but will women have one less reason to need to pander to them? (Again, I understand there are a lot of other things at play that aren’t about inequality).
But having gone on about all that I thought these pics really captured something more than just her naked body behind sheer cloth. They were exciting and sad and the emotion in them made them actually seem forbidden which is almost impossible to do with sex on the internet. Photographer did a great job.

A lot of women seemingly think that somehow turning the tables on this gives them the power rather than the reverse—i.e. I am posing for these photos, I’m in charge and not being subjugated, etc. I think it’s sort of BS, personally. All the talent and brains in the world still gets reduced down to “what do you look like, and more to the point, what do you look like naked?”
